CSA Boxes and Farm Deliveries Serving San Francisco During Coronavirus - Eater SF

"Riverdog Farm in the Capay Valley drops of CSA boxes at Avedano’s in Bernal Heights, Fatted Calf in Hayes Valley, and the Waldorf School, as well as other locations around the Bay. And in addition to vegetables, it’s possible to add on chicken and eggs." - Becky Duffett

I love Riverdog. Their veggie boxes are generous and delicious, but what makes them extra special is that they are very flexible with deliveries. You can send a check month to month and designate the weeks you want a box and the weeks you don't. And if you realize a week ahead that you need to reschedule one of those boxes to a future date, this is easily done by email. Thank you, Riverdog!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE everything you produce. Can't say enough about the vegetables, meats and those yummy eggs. Drive through the Caldecott tunnel and the traffic to stand in line come rain or shine on the days you are at the market. Was there today! But I have one complaint. All the other vendors are set-up and ready to do business often before 2:00; except Riverdog. Sometimes we're standing in line, that can get really long and then here comes the truck rushing into the parking lot, almost running over our feet. Why is that? Today AGAIN, we had to wait almost 10 minutes. And then there was a new girl that didn't know what she was doing; had jumbo eggs, but she didn't realize it until one of the staff showed her what to do and many people had asked for jumbo's and were told, "we don't have any" which was not true. I'm all for learning on the job; but take a little time with your people so they continue to offer good customer service. And the traffic in the bay is terrible; and being a little late sometimes can be expected. But I suspect this is a terrible habit that just keeps getting worst and worst. And there is no apology for, "Sorry we're late." Yes, we love Riverdog, but put yourself in our shoes - how would you feel waiting for a vendor every Tuesday. Our time is valuable too! We're at your mercy because we love your products and if I go away, it's no big deal to you. But I am hoping that you will make a better effort to be on time! Thank you for listening!

Yelp
I haven't written a single Yelp review since the Great Pandemic began. I would like to return to Yelp, starting now, writing thankful and positive reviews for establishments that have come through for all of us in a time of crisis. Let's start with Riverdog! I was pretty confident that I'd written about Riverdog in the past and was somewhat shocked to see that I praised only their eggs in my short initial review. Yes, the eggs are great, and everyone knows it. But I can make a long, long list of Riverdog products that consider to be top notch: green garlic, raw chickens, pork chops, carrots, daikons, asparagus tips, onions, black radishes, little gems when they're available, .... At the moment, their early girl and heirloom tomatoes are truly excellent. In recent weeks, I've gotten their squash and green beans -- excellent again, of course. Riverdog prices are not outrageous, in view of the high quality. Their wares merit a detour. The farmers (Trini and Tim) and their employees (shout out here for Becky) are all super-nice. Check them out!

Yelp
After trying other CSAs in the area I came across Riverdog Farm from a newsletter sent out by my favorite pork butcher, Fatted Calf. $20 a week for organic produce, why not give it a shot. So I paid for a month in advance (you pay by check either by the month or the quarter) and waited for my first pick up. Fortunately there are a few options for picking up your box in Napa (check their website to see if there's one nearby you) including one only a mile away from our home. Yeah! The pickup location, at least in my area, is in someone's carport which is fairly typical of CSAs, thank goodness for volunteers. Just verify your pick up by signing the clipboard by your name, grab your box or unload it into your own bags (if you take the box return it in your next visit) then prepare to be wowed by the amazing produce. Each week is a little but different and changes along with the season. What's always in the box is the most beautiful organic produce I've ever seen. This weeks box had a bunch of gorgeous rainbow chard which was sautéed along with Fatted Calf sweet sausage served on top of Model bread with poached eggs. Best chard ever! I've posted a few pics of the last few boxes, judge for yourself, Riverdog Farm is amazing. It doesn't get any better than this. PS... They also raise organic fed hogs and chickens. Picked up my first pork share (delivered along with my regular box pick up) and the cuts look so tasty. Can not wait to braise the fresh hocks. Check their website for a complete list of pork share offerings.

Yelp
I've been getting a CSA box from Riverdog Farm since January and have been absolutely loving it! At $20 per week it's actually a bargin for what you get. I find we are eating SO MUCH more produce because we have all of this wonderful stuff to use up. And actually I believe it is has made me become a better cook - I am much more creative in the kitchen now and I have a very happy partner! It feels so great to be eating so much fresh, organic, local produce! Summer is here we are rolling in goodness but even in the drudgery of February we were provided with a well rounded delicious veggie box. They have so many locations it is easy to pick up. I love the farm newsletters that come in each box with recipes and farm news, it makes you feel like you have a connection to your food. I can highly recommend Riverdog farm CSA box!!!

Yelp
Alan picked up a couple of bunches of chard at the Kensington Farmers' Market on Sunday and tonight he made a chard frittata for dinner. The bunches of chard were about $2 apiece and they were vibrant and healthy looking. He tells me their produce is named after Sesame Street characters. Our chard was Grover and Ernie. They were delicious. It was one of the best frittatas we've had in recent memory. We will definitely buy more from them.

Yelp
I have to admit...I had never heard of CSA (community supported agriculture) until my daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Robert, joined one in Austin, TX. I googled CSAs in this area, but really didn't find anything. Then, my Pilates instructor at Aspire Studios had brochures for Riverdog Farm in Guinda. I decided to give them a try. WOW!!!! Every Wednesday is like Christmas. I am trying veggies that I had never considered buying before -- all for only $20 a week! For the same amount of veggies at the local farmers market, I'm sure it would cost more. The produce is grown in Guinda and delivered locally to several areas in the East Bay on Wednesdays. The following website shows what East Bay cities are available for delivery. I choose to pick mine up at Barton Chiropractic on Monument in Concord. www.riverdogfarm.com The program works by having subscribers pay for their veggies a month in advance. What isn't sold through subscriptions is sold at all Berkeley Farmers Markets. Before I joined Riverdog Farm, I had NO idea what Fennel was...what to do with green garlic...or that REAL organic vegetables were so delicious. And my 2 bunnies are thrilled as well since they get the carrot tops and other leafy "extras" that I save for them. I was amazed when I returned from Hawaii last weekend that the veggies that I had received on 4/8 were still fresh and crisp. I was reminded that because I received them about 24 hours after they were picked, they still WERE fresh. What we buy at the grocery is usually already a month old. An added bonus is that since you pay in advance, if you miss a week due to vacations, etc., you can chose to let them know in advance and they will credit you the next month for that week or -- as in my case, I choose to have a friend pick them up and use them herself. Share the wealth is my motto :-) I am absolutely thrilled with Riverdog Farm and I'm looking forward to what the summer crops will be. We are still in Spring, so my veggie box this week consisted of: Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Leeks, Red Leaf Lettuce, Little Gem Lettuce, Chard, Spinach, and Oregano. The boxes are meant for a family of 2, but could easily be stretched to a family of 4. I have to say, that I eat almost the entire box of veggies by myself :-) Riverdog Farm does not advertise their CSA program. They currently have space for additional subscribers. If you are looking to eat healthy and organic, Riverdog Farm is a GREAT place to start!

Yelp
I've been getting this CSA box for about 6 weeks now and I love it. For $20 per week you get a box of veggies (and somtimes fruit). In my first box I was surprised with some dried peaches and last week there was a basket of strawberries. By the way, folks, everything is ORGANIC. Yes. A big box of ORGANIC veggies for $20. My kids (3 and 5) come with me to get the box and are so much more interested in veggies since we started getting it. My 3 year old shucked fava beans with me, and my 5 year old now loves roasted asparagus. We've made (and the whole family loved) creamy cauliflower bisque, vegetable broth, carrot-ginger soup and more. I tried green garlic for the first time and I fell in love with it. What's more... I'm supporting local agriculture. I love it.

Yelp
I went to their stand at the Tuesday market in Berkeley and wanted to buy some overpriced green beans at $4/pound. The woman at the scales wanted $0.25 for a paper bag. She didn't appreciate my pointing out how ridiculous it is to expect customers to walk around with handfuls of green beans and gave me attitude about it. Usually the other people who work there are really friendly but I guess they let one jerk slip through the hiring process. Every other vendor gives customers complimentary paper bags for loose, bulk items like green beans, tomatoes, blueberries, etc. Get with it, Riverdog.

Yelp
We liked the assortment and good quality. Decent value. My wife is enough of a foodie that we used Riverdog a while and up-shifted to the more costly and fussier Chez Panisse box that includes Riverdog. Those who like very good food at a reasonable price should be happy w this service

Yelp
We are signed up for the weekly delivery at the Richmond field station: every box is like opening veggie treasure- the tastiest and freshest greens melons and root vegetables imagineable .

Yelp
The produce was always fresh and tasty and part of me really enjoyed the surprise each week. We ate somethings we normally wouldn't. I just couldn't justify spending $20 a week on a grab bag of veggies when you can got to the farmer's market and spend your $20 on the veggies you and your family like best. If you were getting a "deal" for paying up front for box, it would be different, but it isn't much of a deal when you compost the beets because beets have been in the box for what seems like months on end... I love the idea of CSA, it just didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Yelp
I have been a loyal Riverdog customer for about 8-10 years in total. I stopped only when I moved to San Francisco (they didnt deliver there and I didnt have a car). The produce has always been extremely fresh. I love that I can live in the city but be able to cook seasonally. I also learn how crops are affected by weather -- one Spring, because of the weather, we got very little asparagus, so the next year when we got a lot, I was very appreciative. Sometimes there is too much of something but that is somewhat personal taste and it changes year by year. Also, I have to say the price is cheap! I have never left a farmer's market spending only $20. This has helped me cut down on my grocery costs, I only supplement with fruits and some mushrooms or extra greens (but that is me, I am a greens fanatic!) Also, for meat eaters their meat is fabulous!! I absolutely love Riverdog and love supporting a good farming business. IT's also great to note that they employ quite a few workers with fair wages year round.

Yelp
I moved here from Texas 3 years ago specifically for the local food and wine available here. I am a private chef and was very disenchanted with my home state (born and raised Texan.) and the lack of both variety and availabilty of local produce. I had heard of CSA's and was jealous that in TX there was nothing available - unless you lived in Austin which I didn't. As soon as I got settled here in Napa Valley, I looked up CSA's and found Riverdog. I quickly became a fan and have stayed a fan. I took a brief break and joined another very popular CSA (FFTY) because they took credit cards and Riverdog didn't. Since I was living on credit cards at that time, I thought it made sense until I discovered that FFTY gets produce from several farms and keeps it stored in a cooler until delivery. So they are basically a glorified produce market and it's not at all fresh. One bunch of asparagus smelled worse than my pre-teen boys room and was slimy. Eeeww!! I decided that finding the cash to purchase my boxes from RD was extremely important to me so I dumped the "other" and rejoined Riverdog. As opposed to my experienc with FFTY, Riverdog's produce is beautiful every week and the variety is awesome. Yes, there are lots of greens, both to cook and to eat in salads, but unless you want to support trucked-in produce that's what grows at certain times of year and I'm willing to discover a never-ending variety of recipes to use these veggies. But what I have truly loved is the enthusiasm with which even my kids approach prodcue now. We are the drop spot for Vacaville and my youngest son goes out, gets the box off the porch and immediately opens it to tell me what's inside. They have now visited the farm twice on the Member days and they have gotten to feed the pigs that turn into ribs and sausage for them as well as dig up carrots and potatoes, cut their own pumpkins off the vine and collect walnuts that took us well into winter baking. My kids completely understand where food comes from and what's fun is watching Tim and Trini, the owners of RD teach them patiently when they are at the farm. As you can see, I can't say enough about Riverdog as I truly love it.

Yelp
They could care less about their neighbors! They have a diesel pump that is so loud we can barely sleep. Spoke with them several times but they don't seem to be considerate enough to help rectify the situation.

Yelp
First off, I'm amazed that anyone gave less than 5 star reviews. This CSA has consistenly fresh veggies (wilted cabbage? huh? no way, sorry.) and is cheaper than the other ones. It's a ton of produce for $20 a week. Second, I'm not really going to say anything new, unfortunately. I can only echo these raves: - I have tried so many new things since becoming a member of the CSA box. - I am eating way more veggies, and feeling healthier and happier for it. - I am a dork. It is really fun to get the new box every week and see what surprises are in it. - The box has helped me become a better cook and learn new recipes. Right now I am eating sauted radishes, turnips, and watermelon daikon for lunch and it's delicious. - We are spending wayyy less on groceries, and getting more. My only minor complaints are based on personal prejudice, and will not effect my star rating: - Two weeks in a row of iceburg lettuce? Killing me. Why even plant that stuff? - I have decided I hate celery root. Love love love Riverdog farm and am so happy they were recommended to me.

Yelp
i can't stop raving about how much i love the CSA program. my favorite part of the week has become opening a new box of veggies to see what treasures are inside! with an ever-exciting variety of produce to choose from, i have been challenged to try a wide range of new recipes and preparations that i would have otherwise missed. the veggies are so fresh and beautiful that both my roommate and i have often found ourselves unexpectedly cheering with joy when we see them. there's nothing better than seeing a perfectly purple eggplant, or tasting a delightfully earthy carrot, and knowing exactly where (and when) it came from. true, there may be a somewhat odd or slightly less-celebrated vegetable here and there (such as fist-sized radishes or unfamiliar turnips), but i see those more as culinary opportunities than dietary roadblocks. riverdog has turned me into a much healthier and happier eater. another perk has been the impact on the rest of my shopping habits. since starting the CSA program, i hardly need to go to the market anymore. this has translated to a massive (and much welcome) saving in both time and money. as much as i love TJ's and berkeley bowl, i tend to get carried away, and end up spending hours picking out which tomatoes i need. now, i live primarily off of the riverdog box, and supplement the produce with dry goods from the markets. overall, i couldn't be happier with the riverdog CSA - i would recommend it to anyone (and often do)!

YUP K.

Yelp
Great fresh produce at a reasonable price delivered to a nearby pickup spot. I can't complain. I definitely prefer it to Terra Firma's CSA, having tried both. I just wish they would send me eggs weekly. I wouldn't even be mad if I got a broken egg now and then. Pretty please? It'd also be nice if you guys took PayPal or something other than mailing checks, not that it's too big of a deal. P.S. The two low reviews in here are from people who signed up without even understanding what a CSA is. Community Supported Agriculture. You get what the farm has at a given time of the year. Ideally CSA customers realize that, and aren't upset when they receive asparagus week after week when it's in season, or tons of lettuce. Sure, Riverdog could send you organic Chilean tomatoes in the Winter, or spice things up with cold storage apples or carrots, but that would ruin the local seasonal organic thing which is the whole point of a CSA to begin with.

Yelp
I have been shopping here for years. I buy a lot of their chickens with head and feet still on. I was getting tired of paying 5.00 a pound and started to think of other places to buy chickens when they suddenly raised their prices to 6.00 a pound a couple of months ago. That was it for me! A week later I stopped by to see if consumer demand had pushed the price back down a bit, when I discovered they had again raised their price to 7.00 a pound for a chicken with head and feet attached. Amazing!!! I guess if people are stupid enough to pay it,they will charge it.

Hoody R.

Yelp
I haven't subscribed to any other CSA veggie box program but I like this one a lot. It does encourage me to eat a lot of vegetables which I thought I did before, but, now I really do! I think $20 a week is a good deal for all the fruit and veggies you can eat in a week. The produce is fresh, diverse and a pleasure to cook or eat raw.

Yelp
I've been eating Riverdog Farm veggies just about every week for the last two years thanks to their AWESOME csa program. If there is a delivery in your neighborhood, give it a shot. The value is terrific, and the quality of the produce and fruit is top notch, some of the best around. Sample their goods at the berkeley farmer's market if you're not sure, but the csa is def the way to go. Also, their pork and chickens and so tasty, again some of the best I've had.

Yelp
I've been a Riverdog Farm CSA subscriber for at least 5 years, and love it! I do get tired of greens and root vegetables in the winter and squash in the summer, but I always know the produce is tasty and fresh. And...I've learned to love kale, beets and many other veggies I wasn't used to. LOVE!

Yelp
I've been getting the veggie box from Riverdog Farm for over a year and can't say enough good things about it. Not only is the produce fresh, plentiful, and delicious, you get a fantastic variety (including fruit!) and a lot for your money. In addition, the folks that work at Riverdog are super responsive and flexible with scheduling, etc. I love getting to try out new veggies and my cooking has definitely improved as a result, not to mention getting to avoid the crowds at Berkeley Bowl or Monterrey Market.

Yelp
We've been getting Riverdog's CSA box for 4 and a half months so far (January through April) and we love it! We get amazing, totally fresh veggies every week, picked up at a house right in my neighborhood. We've never had any problem with wilted produce or anything less than stellar quality. It's $20 a week, and you get a TON of veggies (and fruit) for that price -- I think it's a much better value than some of the other CSAs around, and I spend way less on groceries now that I get this box. Even in the dead of winter, the variety and quality has been great -- we got almost 50lbs of various kinds of oranges in our box between January and the end of March, plus tons of delicious kale, chard, radishes, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, almonds, dried peaches and nectarines, meyer lemons, leeks, green garlic, fennel, cilantro, bok choi, carrots (the best I've ever eaten!), parsnips, winter squash, rutabegas, potatoes, and other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. Very flexible - you only need to sign up for a month at a time, and you can put it on hold for a week or two if you go on vacation. You can also special order almond butter, pork, and chicken through the farm. Oh, and I randomly met the owner a couple weeks ago while canoeing in the Capay Valley and she was super friendly and sweet! We could not be happier! If you're a fussy eater, a CSA box might not be for you, because you don't get to choose what you get, but for us that's not a problem -- we love coming up with creative ways to use up our produce each week (like homemade sauerkraut from a recent run of cabbage, yum!) and getting to try new stuff. Highly, highly recommended
