The Best Fish and Chips on the Oregon Coast | Eater Portland

"In the summer months, kayakers on the Nehalem River pull up to the bank at Riverside Fish & Chips to fuel up with a three-piece basket of Pacific cod, chips, and a side of creamy slaw. Now open year-round, this busy food truck is nestled behind a row of shops on the short main drag in Nehalem and can be accessed streetside via a small alley. Seating is mostly outdoor on shaded picnic tables, with some cover over a patio behind a local antique store. Regulars wholeheartedly approve of the light, non-oily beer batter, and occasional live music." - Emily Teel

Google
Absolutely amazing fish and chips! Breading was light and crunchy and everything was smoking hot fresh out of the fryer. Tartar sauce was delicious with a hint of dill. Fries were perfectly crispy and perfectly seasoned. I am usually not the biggest fan of coleslaw but theirs was so good! It has craisins mixed in which I absolutely loved! Adds some really nice sweetness to it. We will definitely be back next time we’re in town!

ALLISON GROVES

Google
The fish and chips here are the best we've ever had! The batter is light and crispy and the fries are the same. The cole slaw was excellent, too. But please note, this is not a restaurant. It's a food truck set up on a basic outdoor patio with picnic tables which needed to be wiped off. It fronts the river so that was nice. And, it is dog friendly

Google
Great little hideaway, little pricey for food received i got fish & chips, they were out of cod , so had to get the Halibut. ALSO paid 3.50 for a tiny 3oz portion of slaw, scratching head? 😬 WAAAA? Oh well, on the positive, it was good. Very friendly.

Found this spot on Google traveling through oregon. Had the 3 piece cod and fish tacos. Both were made fresh to order and so good. The couple that runs this spot are nice and friendly people. Wonderful atmosphere eating by the river. 100% recommend hungry travelers to stop by here.

Google
This Back Alley, Riverside, gem of a food truck more than meets expectations. They have the most affordable, as well as delicious cod, fish and chips. The cod was crisp, hot and moist as well. The fries were nicely battered and crispy. The guys that run this establishment are super nice. Come out and give them a chance. I came out from Tillamook to check out their fish and chips, and was not disappointed. As far as seating goes, they have outdoor seating near the river along with covered seating up on the patio.

Google
We waited about 40 minutes on a Wednesday mid day to get the best airy, crispy, light fish and chips! It was very much worth the wait. Some of the best we’ve had on the coast! Paid $30 for 2. Wish it wasn’t raining because the outdoor seating on the river looked lovely.

Google
Got here just about opening time for the first order of the day. This place is awesome! Even in the rain, they have a covered deck area with tables and propane heaters which treated me well and kept me cozy while I sat down to eat. The Cod fish and chips basket is delicious! The homemade tartar is great and the homemade slaw is super tasty with dried cranberries in it. Highly recommend making a stop to grab some fish and chips while in Nehalem. Jana was very helpful and turned on the heater for me and provided excellent cooking and service! Thank you!!!

Google
The halibut was awesome, buttery and flaky. I usually don't care for Coleslaw but I thoroughly enjoyed theirs. It had raisins, which is weird for some but I loved the flavor of it. I say the best place in town by far. Plenty of outdoor seating, perfect for dogs. Beautiful scenery, right on the river side, hence the name. I will definitely be coming back if I'm ever back in town.

Shawna D.

Yelp
Worth the wait!!! Absolutely look forward to their opening each year. The cod is always consistently great. Beautiful view and the staff is working like a well oiled machine churning out probably hundreds of orders per day. I'm a tartar sauce snob and they have a good one. ( dill, thank you) The coleslaw is also good and not just the same you get everywhere else ( love those celery seeds) As to the negative reviews, good food takes time.. the 5 person group in front of you is just as hungry as you are. If it's a long wait I suggest playing some pinball nextdoor or strolling over to the record shop across the street or just maybe, take a break and enjoy the view.

Yelp
Where's the fish?! Fish has turned into tiny nuggets in what was once a "go to" place on the coast. Next year finger nail size? $15.60 including tip for 2 tiny pieces of fish. Restaurant responds "sorry not sorry?!" Continues with messages not living up to the skimpy portions! Yikes! A sad tourist trap now, avoid.
google avatar

Mark K.

Yelp
Good fish and chips. Their main menu offers cod but halibut fish and chips was a special limited item. We order the halibut and it was delicious. The fries were crunchy and well seasoned. A small side of tasty coleslaw comes with the order. It is a food truck that is a little hard to find if you're not a local. We were visiting the area and a neighbor told us about them. They are located behind a building on Highway 101 housing a distillery in a small area by the backwaters of the Nehalem River. Call ahead to order because they get busy. It took 30 minutes to prepare our order and they are not open everyday.
google avatar

Gaby B.

Yelp
Great fish and chips right on the nehalem river. They also have pulled pork tacos & fish Tacos as well as a pulled pork grilled cheese. It does get busy /have a wait at times but it is definitely worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Worth.The.Stop. After a long hike or a walk on the beach, treat yourself - you've earned it. Came for a quick lunch and we got the fish & chips which we really enjoyed! Some of the best I've had. Fries are crispy and crunchy, fish is battered well and has great texture. Coleslaw tastes similar to broccoli salad, comes in a small cup. Two pieces of fish is enough, $15 for 2 or 3 for $18. Scenic river to sit by and dog friendly!
google avatar

Thea J.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!! Our family stopped here after a long day at the beach, and had the most fabulous fish and chips. Perfectly fried, savory tartar sauce, coleslaw that is fresh and flavorful. With plenty of seating by the river and on a covered deck. The service was quick, and everything we could want for an afternoon lunch. Bonus: if you want something healthy Butternut is in the same complex and shares seating with Riverside. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
This is an outside food cart right on the water in the small town of Nehalem on the Oregon coast. You order your fish and chips, wait a half hour,, then eat at a picnic table. The fish is some of the most delicious I've ever tasted. Be aware, they will close early if they run out of food.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
Busy truck set along the riverfront, with some sunny and some covered seating. Service was fairly pleasant & decently fast. The fish size was good, breaded and cooked well, although a smidge under-seasoned to us. Fries were great, but the portion was small. They give you plenty of tartar, but I only saw one bottle of vinegar (on the truck next to the ketchup pump) available that you had to pour into little bowls to take to your table...a tad awkward. Overall a pretty good lunch.
google avatar

Naomi B.

Yelp
I've had plenty of fish and chips before and this is by far my favorite in Oregon. Served out of a very cute cart by the river, this is a must stop place for some amazing food!
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
Best fish and chips around!!! The Cole slaw is amazing!! People are friendly, service is great!!
google avatar

Ariel W.

Yelp
Was driving through the area and my friend said we had to try the fish and chips from this spot. He ordered us each a basket to go and everything was absolutely spot on. When in the Nehalem area again, will definitely have to stop by for some more excellent fish and chips.
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
AMAZING!! Be prepared to wait because it'll be busy, but gosh darn it it is worth the wait! The fish is crispy and light, the fries are well seasoned and crunchy and the slaw is the perfect balance to it all. The cart is behind buttercup and another business. There are picnic tables next to the river where everyone sits and eats. They also make fish tacos, hot dogs, and grilled cheese if fish isn't your thing. These fries are the best fries I've ever had and I want their secret!!

Yelp
Spent the better part of last spring searching for THE FISH AND CHIPS spot of Oregon! It seemed like everywhere I went, the locals mentions Riverside. So I made the adventure to Nehalem! And boy am I Hooked;) They have THE best batter, and they batter the fish AND the fries in it! The ambiance of this riverside eatery is so cute and relaxing. Just sitting by the river on a picnic table, enjoying the best fish in chips in Oregon...can't beat it! They always are ready to help with a smile on!

Yelp
My friends and I were visiting this area as tourists and we didn't know where to eat. We stumbled across this hidden gem behind the shops on the street and it happened to be one of the best pieces of halibut I have tasted since I've tried it a few years ago in Alaska. Chips were seasoned and fried to perfection. Tartar sauce complimented the fish and chips really well. Lastly, I disliked coleslaw until I tried theirs. Phenomenal. Service was quick and friendly. The environment of the location tied it all together. There are red seats by the river next to the truck and it made the experience even better. Good experience and good food! 10000/10

Yelp
This was one place recommended to us when we were staying in Manzanita. I got fish tacos and my other half got fish and chips. Bother were excellent. The fish was came in nice portions and the fries were really good. I do have a few things I would say could use work. There was no seasoning to the batter.. at least that is how it tasted. The other part was it was a cold day we were from out of town but told their was good outside seating. It is covered but none of the propane tanks were on so we couldn't get the heater light make lunch a very cold ordeal.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
WOW. This place undeniably has the best fish and chips. We originally had theirs two years ago and, since then, have been trying F&C all across the southern states, PNW, and Canada and were underwhelmed every time. Well, we finally made it back today and had to try it again and it's substantially better than everywhere else!
google avatar

Leah R.

Yelp
It was raining sideways in Manzanita and we had our dog with us. There's a covered patio next to the food cart that's also 75% covered with plastic on the sides. Customers from the food cart are welcome to sit and eat on the patio out of the rain. And of course, the fish and chips with slaw were excellent! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
I stopped by for lunch on my way back to the valley and was glad I did. The staff was friendly and the food was good. I had the fish and chips, and they have other things on the menu for the kids and nonfish lovers; it's a family-friendly menu! The fries are honestly the best part. They have added pepper to the fries so you get salt and pepper fries and they are delicious! I would go back just for the fries and the river view while munching on them.
google avatar

Karen V.

Yelp
Was traveling through and the place was recommended by a local. It was pouring rain but there's a covered porch with seating. The fish and chips, fries, and coleslaw basket hit the spot.
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips stop while visiting Manzanita. I tried the fish tacos and the rest of my party had the fish and chips. The fish and chips were served with coleslaw and fries. The seating overlooked a waterway with picnic tables outside. Prepare for a wait during high tourist times but you are given a pager and you can enjoy the view while you wait. Perfect Oregon coastal ambiance. Lots of dessert options right next door. If you are in the mood to top off your lunch with something sweet check out the donut trailer next door. Pro tip: strawberry shortcake donuts are in season right now.
google avatar

Kai E.

Yelp
Light & flaky, yet crispy batter. Well seasoned fries. Fresh fish. Overall great experience and great food

Doug T.

Yelp
We stopped along the highway after reading reviews of Riverside -wanted a great Fish n Chips lunch and we couldn't have been more pleased. Sooo good. So flavorful. It took longer than we'd expected to get our food but it was worth the wait- just a busy afternoon. Give these guys a try - you won't regret it.
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
Perhaps the best fish and chips I've ever had. These defy the traditional greasy gut-bomb and instead deliver a delicious and oddly refreshing experience. The breading is light and the fish is tender, the fries are well seasoned and not too salty. The meal is served with a small side of slaw along with tartar sauce and ketchup. Darn delicious.
google avatar

Raeann P.

Yelp
Fish and Chips, the oldest trick in the beach-goer's book, right? Yes, but! Riverside has figured out how to make the BEST fish and chips I've ever tried. The batter on the cod was light and flaky, yet rich and satisfying. The seasoning on the chips was delicious, and not overwhelming. I didn't walk away feeling weighted down, simply wonderfully content. From the Main Street of Nehalem you'll have to walk down a little boardwalk to the grassy area in the back. Picnic tables and river views await you, and you simply order from the food truck and wait for the magic to happen! If you haven't made it to this spot yet, you simply must - it's too good to pass up!
google avatar

Briana T.

Yelp
This hidden gem is a perfect spot for a quiet meal while exploring the PNW coast! They had great reviews, so we decided to stop for a quick lunch and so glad we did. We actually missed the sign and passed it at first, so be on the lookout! It's hidden behind a few places on the main drag, but just look for the sign and follow the fish to lead you to the food truck. There's probably 8ish picnic tables available to sit at with the most quaint view of the river. There were a few extra tables up on a patio that were available as well; honestly I couldn't quite tell if they were supposed to be used for Riverside or if that place was just closed at that time. Anywho. We ordered two fish tacos with cole slaw and a single fish with chips. We waited about 30-40 minutes to get our food, but enjoyed some outstanding local beer while we waited in the perfect weather. The fish tacos were the same as the one piece of fish and were super fresh and crispy. I preferred the tacos just because of the fresh slaw, cilantro, and tortillas. The cole slaw was unique and super tasty, and I could have just eaten a whole basket of those fries! They had homemade tartar sauce which was amazing as well. Great experience from a local fish food truck with several options whether you want just a snack or a full meal. If you have some extra time, make sure to scope this place out- it's worth the drive!

Yelp
Still great fish and chips with a wonderful view. Have to say that shrinkflation has hit this spot hard, portions are smaller than in the past and it's gotten so popular the wait times are long. Higher prices and smaller portions don't seem to bother the lines of customers at this food truck by the river.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Our first time to try Riverside Fish n" Chips and we were very pleased. We were there on Monday, August 28th just as they opened at 11:30 and there were already several others in line ahead of us. My husband and I ordered an order of the two piece fish and chips plus an order of the fish tacos to share. We had to wait twenty minutes for our order, but it was well worth the wait. The fish is fabulous and so are the fries! They apparently make their own tartar sauce which has dill instead of sweet relish. The fries were crunchy and well seasoned and served hot. The fish tacos were delicious! We had heard from other people that the wait can be as much as an hour when busy, so we felt lucky that our wait was much shorter. We will definitely go back again!
google avatar

Kara D.

Yelp
Absolutely insane prices for cart tacos. 2 tacos with barely any meat and a small condiment/sauce container worth of slaw for $14.50?! Add the rude staff and 30 mins wait for said tacos with no heads up...not sure what happened to this once great spot to stop for food in Nehalem.
google avatar

Billy F.

Yelp
Came here 2 years ago. Loved it. Came again. Still love it. Fried fish is flakey. Fries are crispy and nicely seasoned. Their hidden spot is charming. 5/5 would (and did) come again!
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
This place is amazing! It truly hit the spot after a day of hiking around the beach. Not only is the food delicious, but the place is extremely cute and relaxing. Perfect way to end the day.
google avatar

Jaymi B.

Yelp
We were told by locals that we should check out this place while in Nehalem. It was a busy Saturday afternoon on a sunny day, so naturally they were slammed. There was a long line and we were told the wait for food was 40 min. Normally I would have left, but our group decided to wait. When all was said and done it was well over an hour. The staff were super grumpy, no smiles, no thanks so much for waiting, no appreciation for customers. A little customer service goes a long way. We finally got our food and were sorely disappointed. The fish was good, but not hot. The coleslaw came in a tiny plastic cup, and we each got about 15 fries. Our whole group was really disappointed. We devoured what food we had and were still hungry.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
Yum! There's a reason for all those five stars in the Yelp! reviews! Lovely spot with outside seating by the Nehalem River to enjoy your crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside fish and chips. Chips were outstanding. Crisp and perfectly seasoned. Our daughter loved her pulled pork cheese sandwich; she said the balance was perfect. And you can get beer or wine with your meal. Order at the food truck and presto, your order is ready! Will definitely stop again!
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
We needed a spot with good fish before heading back home from our camp trip. This place has exceptional reviews so we decided to give it a try! We each got an order of fish and chips and a drink. The location is great right on the river with an awesome view. The food came out fairly quick and it was piping hot and delicious! The tartar sauce was outstanding and had great flavor and the fries had this seasoning on them that we couldn't get enough of! We loved it and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Dylan Y.

Yelp
Follow the red fish to riverside fish. The fish was delicious and flaky, and the chips were awesome perfect Christy seasoned fries.
google avatar

Juliet D.

Yelp
Some of the best , maybe even the best F&C around. Call before you come hours are variable not always as posted. Cook was grumpy but who cares it's not what I'm there for. 4&1/2 stars.
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
Fish and chips by the river?! A dream!! A quaint food truck tucked away behind an antique store, Riverside Fish and Chips may be small, but they sure do deliver! Featuring cod fish and chips and tacos, their simple menu highlights their quality. We got a 2 piece fish and chips basket and fish tacos. Food took about 15 minutes to come out as there was only one person working. Man oh man, was it good. The fish was decent sized, the breading was not too heavy or oily, and the fish was fresh, flakey, tender, and juicy. Probably one of the best fish and chips I've had at the coast. The tacos were also better than expected! It came topped with slaw, pickled onions, and a tartar-like sauce that complemented the fish so nicely. Stellar fish and chips plus a view of Nehalem river = 5/5 experience. I would make a trip to the coast for these. You should too!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
This Food Cart by the River serves up some pretty good fish and chips. I wasn't super hungry (which itself is a shock) and just wanted a piece of fish or two, so we got a 4 piece instead of 2 meals and it worked out well. The fish took a while to be done, but it was worth the wait. The fish was crisp and moist with a delicious batter. The fries were hot and good as well. It was a good meal. I just wish we were in and out a bit faster. Restrooms are inside a neat little shop and can get busy with the amount of patrons getting their seafood fix. I have no idea where it is so look at the Yelp! map and you should be able to find your way there. We were driving down the coast from Cannon Beach in northern Oregon down to Depoe Bay so it's somewhere in between! :) I will say the name Riverside Fish and Chips is spot on too. Genius!
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
They're super friendly and the texture of fish was crispy outside, not soggy, even though I ordered on the phone and didn't know when I'd pick up. It looks on photo as good as it tastes! The only reason why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the fish wasn't seasoned, almost no salt at all. Nonetheless, we'll be back when we'd crave fish and chips, and gotta watch that sodium intake lol

Jessie G.

Yelp
Yes! Tasty, light, crunchy! If you are a fish and chips fan, I think you'll like this. I'm not a fish fan, but this place had some really good reviews, so my sisters and I gave this a shot, and I'm glad we did. Everything was so good. Battered, fried cod pieces were light, crunchy, salty and tender. Fries were seasoned well and very crisp in the best way. The slaw was creamy, slightly sweet, exactly how I like it. And who doesn't like a pickled red onion? Just, all good things. Weather was great so we were able to sit outside in the sun after a long day at the beach, and enjoy our meals with a couple adult beverages. And we went in the middle of the afternoon, so it wasn't busy so the food was done quickly, and the staff working the truck couldn't have been any friendlier. Well done!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This little spot a food truck, is easy to miss but is a must visit place! Fish and chips are excellent, freshly cooked. There is seating both outside and under cover with heaters
google avatar

Yelp
FIVE STARS! Totally living up to the five star rating, Riverside Fish and Chips was the perfect pitstop as Mr. S and I were making our way south down the coast. We were looking for somewhere to grab lunch and I searched Yelp for best or top rated restaurants near me and this one caught my eye being 5 stars and all. I was definitely in the mood for fish so we made our way there. This is a food truck behind an antique shop, off an alley way so if you're not a local or looking for it, you may totally miss this gem. It's situated right on the river complete with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables to enjoy your meal. The wait was around 20 minutes or so, but well worth it. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection, the fries were hot and delicious, and that tartar sauce?! OMG. Mr. S and I actually split a basket. We ordered a 3 piece basket and added a 4th piece for a few dollars more. It really hit the spot.

Rachel V.

Yelp
Amazing halibut fish and chips. Expect a wait during busy times, but it's well worth it. Nice seating by the river too!
google avatar

Keira N.

Yelp
Really crispy fish. Service was...less than I would have expected. I am from Oregon, not the East coast and am accustomed to a bit friendlier service from a little food cart. That being said, would definitely come here again. The coleslaw was delicious, as were the fries and the fish. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Camille Q.

Yelp
We recently did a PNW road trip and had the best vibe driving along the Oregon coast and stopping by this place for a quick bite to eat. I love that it is by the river, because it just gave off a relaxing feel. Perfect while enjoying the hot, flaky, delicious fish and chips. I really enjoyed it here! I definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area.
google avatar

Ann R.

Yelp
Great stop for one of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Fun little spot on the river. A few picnic tables and some seating near the water. Service was spot on. Fish was flaky crispy coating. Delicious coleslaw very crunchy and creamy texture. Great stop after a day of hiking or a day at the beach.

Yelp
Wow, please just keep on doing what you do and do not change a thing! Stopped here on the way back home from a vacation in Manzanita. This was months ago, forgot to post a review. Or maybe it was my brain stealth training me to forget, coz sometimes when places become too popular, the business struggles to keep up with demand and food quality goes down. I can't have that. Not at this place. I wish it was down the road from me. Seriously. We did not know what to expect beyond that the reviews looked good. Well, let me say the place did not disappoint. Far from it, I'd say that I now hold every other fish and chips plate I ever eat up to this gold standard. Fresh as can be fish, perfect texture, great batter, deliciously seasoned fries. The coleslaw on the side was fresh as can be. You can tell that everything is made with care and with the freshest ingredients possible. All served up quick with friendly smiles from a couple of efficient gals manning the food cart. You are seated on a wooden deck overlooking the river. If you do get bored, look around you, there are plenty of quaint maritime antiques strewn about the deck. I will surely be back. In fact thinking of driving over this weekend, just for another taste of the fish and chips and the donuts from the cart next door.
google avatar

Debbie J.

Yelp
Delicious and a good price! Recommend by locals. Nice very casual self service alongside the beautiful river shared a table with some nice diners too! We shared the fish tacos and 3 pc fish & chips (soda & a beer). Both items equally good tho Fish & chips a bit more filling w fries. GO!
google avatar

Lydia N.

Yelp
AH-MAZING!!! It's just under $14 for 3pcs fish + fries. 100% worth it! They used hefty fish fillets, thinly battered in a light crust. They are cooked on the spot, so it was ripping hot when we picked up our order. Surprisingly, the fries were a winner. They were seasoned with some delicious savory medley (kinda reminded me of Arby's curly fry seasoning) but they also stayed magically crispy throughout our entire meal. I finished Alllllll the fries. The coleslaw was a nice treat to balance all the fried food. This place is pretty popular, so you can expect a little wait.
google avatar

Yelp
Simply the best fish n'chips you could dream up! Even open in January! Sit outside at the picnic tables or under cover with Italian lights and space heaters. A perfect place for Snacks!
