I was taking a 20-day cruise on the Crystal Serenity and, as is my custom, I fly in at least a day early to ensure I make embarkation on time. After flying 15+ hours (HNL to LAX to ATL to FFL), plus the taxi ride, I needed to check-in, shower and relax.
My friend recommended Riverside due to its location and I booked a Junior Suite. The hotel was built in 1936 and is rated 3 stars. Check-in was fine and I was given a room on one of the upper floors in the original wing, looking West. The room was largish, as are rooms in older hotels, with a small closet, a sofa, table, desk with coffee maker and a king bed. The bathroom was fine with a tub. What did I miss? There wasn't a shower wand, and the toilet was just a standard unit. I'm spoiled by my Toto at home.
I went outside onto the balcony and looked at the river to my left and Las Olas Blvd to my right. All and all, a much nicer room than I expected, given the hotel's 3-star rating. Call me pleasantly surprised. I walked around to familiarize myself with the hotel, finding the bar, Wild Sea restaurant, a small sundries store and a clothing store located next door but with an entrance from the hotel. There are two ballrooms and a large patio on the 9th floor. The one place that showed the hotel's age was its elevators. There were only two, relatively small ones servicing the wing I was in. When I checked in at 6pm, there was a long line of people waiting to go up to the ballrooms.
My friend was spot on about the location. I walked up and down Las Olas Blvd and found a myriad of shops, coffee places and restaurants. It's a very pleasant area with a mix of commercial and residential. The New River winds behind the hotel and one can walk along the river.
Upon disembarkation from the Serenity 21 days later, I caught a taxi and found myself back at the Riverside for one night before returning home to Hawaii. My Junior Suite was on a lower floor than my first visit and there wasn't a balcony, nor were there nice views. I didn't care, I was there only because one can't fly to Hawaii after 10am. This second room was identical to the first except for the lack of a balcony.
What did I think? I loved the location and the rooms were fine. If I return to Fort Lauderdale, I will definitely consider the Riverside for accommodations ... Recommended!
