They cheat. They charged $1.1 more on 3 oranges and 26 cents more on one orange I bought in 2 separate receipts. It happened in my one single trip to this store this evening. Price tag is $1.5 per pound. I suspected 3 small oranges cannot weigh 3 pounds, and cost $4.6 as I paid per my receipt. So I picked one orange to test. He produced a receipt of $1.5. I asked is it correct this orange really weighs one pound. The guy challenged me I can check it myself, than folded his hands standing there staring at me, then asked me what I was waiting for. I told him show me where his scale is. Putting the orange on the scale which I had to clear it out from behind boxes of snack bars on the counter, scale screen showed nothing, I reminded the guy, he turned the scale on. It registered $1.24. The receipt he printed before was $1.5. At that point I had to verify the 3 oranges I had paid for $4.6 just 10 min earlier. Now the scale showed $3.5.
The mistake this man made is taking customer as being ignorant. I had a routine of eating several oranges a day every day for 30 years. I can estimate by hand how heavy oranges weigh. People who bake often have same ability as they deal either precise measurements frequently. When I came back for one orange he should know that I suspected. He should have come clean when I challenged one small orange cannot weigh one pound. Error of $1.1 on $3.5 real price is not a marginal error. Overcharged twice in matter of just 5 min apart is not an honest error.
His bigger mistake was his rudeness and bully manner, he takes any customer as being stupid and he can get away with it.
His biggest mistake is he should have apologized even he may not want to, that the overcharge was an error inadvertently made. Even I know it was deliberate I would have let go. He should have shown sincere and facilitated my use of his scale to test. He did not save his face when he had the chance to.
See how who is stupid now.
I came to this store after going back from work still wearing formal coat and hat from office. The store easily observed I cared for their produce and merchandise each item I picked up and put back gently. I talked nicely, made positive comment about their fresh herbs. At the end that is how they treated a nice customer and who came to their store the first time.
Like most people I hate thieves. The act I witnessed here cannot be an isolate or random incident happening at this store. Taking money from people one doesnt deserve is equivalent to a thief’s act. Shoppers should be aware.
The store also should know that if customer is determined to escalate, complaint can be heard and processed by more than one consumer protection agencies.
