The Best Philly Grocery Stores For Shopping Local | Eater Philly

"With a location in Old City and Fishtown, Riverwards is the grocery store for Philadelphians seeking local produce, dairy, meat, and pantry staples of all kinds. Do they not have what you’re looking for? Riverwards’ staff is extremely helpful. Want to serve local turkey for Thanksgiving dinner? Riverwards is selling locally raised turkeys from Kyle Smith of Smith Poultry and Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative. You can preorder either (or both!) on Riverwards’ website — but make sure to get on it fast. They can sell out." - Dayna Evans

Riverwards is a great store with lots of unique food choices! It’s a beautiful location with lots of natural light. However, the prices are very high. For two smoothies, it was roughly $17. The smoothies were good, but the chocolate almond butter one is gross.

Google
Kudos to the smoothie and juice bar workers! I hope you’re getting paid what you deserve because they were so busy - still friendly and fast service 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Smoothie was tasty and cute. Nothing out of this world but v refreshing on a hot day.

Saw this place on Philly Inquire and was curious. Glad I came! The smoothies are supposedly like Erwon smoothies and were $10 for the smoothie and design on top. I got the sassy lassy which has mango greek yogurt, honey, green cardamom, and lemon. If you like ginger shots and tumeric flavored drinks or kale smoothies, this is your spot! Service was also amazing! The people behind the counter were so nice and they will poor out samples from left over smoothies.

A very charming, though not cheap, store with a cozy country vibe. As far as I understand, this grocery store is mostly visited by residents of nearby apartments — likely from upscale housing complexes — since I didn’t find any other good grocery stores in the immediate area. Right at the entrance, there’s a wonderfully cozy shelf and display with a small selection of kitchenware, magazines, cookbooks, and a beautifully fragrant bunch of real lavender. The shelves are full of organic products. Even the pads and tampons are cotton-based Rael, which are hard to find in most stores—certainly in West Philly — so I usually have to order them from Amazon. They also carry interesting mayo, mustard, lots of spices, grains, and more. The restroom is freely accessible and clean inside, with stylish dark green decor and a pleasant, subtle fragrance.

Super cute with plenty of fresh produce and a nice selection of chocolate. Our main motive for visiting this market was the smoothies one was a Build your-own smoothie and the other one was the Pinky Swear smoothie was very good although the cup wasn’t decorated like how it was in the picture. The barista was super duper nice !

Google
They have a lot of really unique grocery options and premade sides and meals The pastries in the bakery section are also really good and the people working were very helpful Now the smoothies, they are REALLY good! I always get the Green Goddess which is a limited time option but it is great!

Google
Employees are quite rude. I get it, you’re overwhelmed since your smoothies went viral. However, you don’t flag down customers like cattle rolling your eyes huffing because your credit card machine is faulty. A simple excuse me or walking the half step to speak to me would have sufficed. Employer had no problem walking to count her tips rather than try to organize the line. No one knows how to say excuse me. Expect to wait until other customers order the same smoothie as you since they’re grouping them all together rather than having a better system. My partner got his 15 minutes after waiting while I received mine 30+ though we both placed at the same time.

SO EXCITED that they are in the neighborhood! Old City now has a fabulous new local grocery store and we just visited this afternoon. Beautiful produce, an amazing cheese selection, and so many locally sourced products! It also has a grainery (see attached pics) with a huge selection for sustainable groceries. Besides catering to meat lovers with gourmet sausage selections and meats, there was also a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan selections. Really friendly staff too. Highly recommend shopping here. :)

Yelp
It's a fancy little market where you can find common and unique items! I like that they have smoothie/juice bar. They also sell grains in bulk. It is hidden away on a small street without too much light to draw attention. Interesting choice...but maybe it's a speak-easy market Ha! Expect higher prices but it is totally worth stopping by if you're in the neighborhood. P.S. It sells local farm eggs!!!

Yelp
I come from across the city on transportation once a week. Gina was working on a nice display at the entrance when she helped me locate Dandelion leaves. Then I grabbed 2 clusters of lions mane mushrooms; Arugula; Bell Peppers; Avocados; Avacado Oil; Vine tomatoes and a few other items. Genevieve hit the ball out of the park by locating pistachios for me! The bulk area was out. I guess the secret about my favorite pistachios are here, is out. I literally relax when I come home, because it's not the ENERGY of regular grocery chains. The quality of items and pleasantry of the staff and customers is awesome.

Yelp
Since moving to the area a year ago, I have been looking for a quality grocery store. I found Grocery Outlet, it is clean and offers healthier brands for non-perishables. That being said, the produce at Grocery Outlet isn't the best. I drove by Riverwards one day and thought it was a farmer's market. I then came across the Instagram page and was ecstatic to see that it is walking distance from me. The produce at Riverwards is day and night difference to what you will find at any grocery store in the area. One scratch and the limes are releasing scents! The butternut squash was so soft and stayed in my fridge for a week without rotting. The non-perishables are a bit pricey but produce and dairy are reasonably priced here and has me sold! Oh! The avocados were perfect as well, prior to these avocadoes, I had to throw out 3 from the grocery store. Don't like wasting food and don't see that happening here! :)

Yelp
New to Philly I've been slowly finding my way around. Needed to grab some last minute items I forgot after a TJ's run and didn't want to venture too far in the rain. Found this via Yelp and while it was a bit tricky to find (where the sign is posted, isn't the actual street is on- enter from Bread St alley), I am so glad I did. The outdoor (facade) gives old firehouse structure vibe- beautiful brick in a wide open space. Out front, large pumpkins and a fall display gave it a farm feel. At first, it can easily appear be closed but to after three visits it's safe to say they keep the lights low. The space is beautifully arranged with a very diverse selection of products. Think indoor farmer's market. Produce is organic, fresh and bursting with flavors. You can grab artisan bouquets, fresh breads and baked goods, homestyle fresh guacamole and wines. I was pleasantly surprised to even find Jamaican products ( Ting). The variety satisfies a range of price points from mid- high. I'd say they were on average about $2-$4 higher than the aforementioned chain. The staff is pretty cordial and willing to assist. By my 3rd visit we were fully engaged in small talk and they were giving suggestions for rainy weather meals and other things that the area has to offer. Overall, I'm excited to have this gem within walking distance and I know I'm going to be there all the time. P.S. the visit inspired the perfect rainy seat meal: rosemary chicken and bow tie pasta with roasted fall veggies- a chef's kiss.

Yelp
Convenient but expensive. Two tomatoes $5.00. Really overpriced. I go here only when I don't have time to go elsewhere.

Yelp
This is such a cute grocery store that's a little hidden away in an alley. It definitely feels more like a specialty store so you might not be able to get all the items you want but it has a really great selection of produce and there are some unique items on their shelves too. First time I came to this store is during fall season and there were so many different variety of apples it was really hard to make a decision. Besides produce, they also have a great variety of cheeses and dips which I feel would make a great crudité or cheese board (depending on preference of course). Did I mention there was also multiple nuts and grains near the back of the store? This area definitely needed a store that stocked produce and a general catch all.

Yelp
You can't imagine the excitement in Old City over this new grocery store. The whole neighborhood is buzzing, taking photos (just search Instagram for it), and shopping. Fresh, local produce and cheese, a great selection of specialty items, and bulk bins. Those are the 3 things that I'm most excited about. It's clean, well organized, and the selection is great. It's not cheap, but it's also not as expensive as going to a convenience store. And the quality is excellent. I tend to shop as I need things, so I'm sure I'll be stopping in a couple of times a week.

Yelp
Out of all the so call local markets (where they source produce, etc locally) I like Riverwards the best. There are two locations, the original one in Fishtown, and this one in the Old City. The one in the Old City has friendlier workers, less cramped, and basically a more enjoyable shopping experience. What I love about Riverwards is a lot of their produce are very reasonably priced. Yes, they do have some foreign items (European canned fish that is expensive), but I tend to just shop for some produce, coffee, and bread. They have a lot of coffee beans from local roasters, my favourite loaves of bread from Lost Bread, and Mighty Bread (both sourdough based), and you can find decently priced to expensive bars of chocolate (I usually buy these for gifts). If you are in the neighbourhood definitely check them out!

Yelp
This store is located on a small street after passing Betty Ross house when you are coming from 3rd street. I almost miss this cobblestone street. Super friendly and welcoming staff. A lot of local products such as Lost Bread, pastries from High Street. There's a basket of $1 bread at the back.

Yelp
We've always loved the location in Fishtown, but it's quite a walk for grocery shopping, so the new Old City location is such a welcomed addition to the neighborhood! The staff and the owners are always so friendly, the selection is as local as possible, the produce is amazing, and the prices are fair for what you're getting. On top of all of those positives, they're open until 8, which is perfect for us to finish our workday and still get to the market for fresh ingredients for dinner! They also have a smoothie and juice bar now, which we're excited to try! Overall, the frequency with which we shop at Riverwards demonstrates how desperate we were for such a market. Especially on the days and times of year when the farmer's market isn't down the street. Thanks for coming to our hood, Riverwards!

Yelp
100% THE BEST grocery store in Philly. Fresh organic produce everyday from local and sustainable farms in PA and NJ, really great local brands and products, a bulk section, and beautifully arranged fresh cut flowers. I've always loved their Fishtown location but their new location in Olde City is BEAUTIFUL and has an amazing juice bar and every single thing is banging. Better quality and better prices than ACME. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly, everyone is really cool and down to earth. Really great to be able to support a small business that supports other small business and local farms. 1000/10!!!

Yelp
Bored on a Weekday afternoon? time to pop and edible and go to riverwards! The selection of produce is lovely, as are all of the associates. I'm so happy that Riverwards opened right before I moved into Old City because it is truly one of the best spots in the city. The juice bar is so good and has certainly saved many residents from hangovers and illness alike. The chocolate selection is unreal, but I highly recommend the creme brulee bar. just trust me.

Yelp
We loved Riverwards in Fishtown when we would meander in when we were up that way, but getting this so close to us now, it's been great. It truly is a blessing to the neighborhood as you cannot rely on Sassafras market for everything and when the Christ Church Farmer's Market wasn't in session, there was often slim pickings nearby. Well, thankfully, not anymore. We love the diversity of goods that they manage to pack into the store. And that they support so many other local farmers and businesses, too. I especially love that I can get Mom Mom's pierogis, Little Noodle Pasta Co, local produce, eggs, cheese, and more. The staff is super nice, the store is well kept, the prices are more than fair in my opinion. Welcome to the neighborhood, Riverwards - we are so happy to have you!

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE coming here to find groceries on my lunch break. All of the employees are kind and knowledgeable, and almost everything seems to be very reasonably priced. I even saw a bottle of coconut aminos priced cheaper here than on Amazon! It's really great to see all of the vegan food options available, even the freshly prepared food in the fridges, and I especially love the dollar produce markdowns because most of the food and breads that are marked down are still very edible. Do I spend too much money her and will I spend even more? I sure have and I sure will. Thank you, Riverwards, for always being so awesome.

Yelp
A gem, and a much needed local business. For years we've had to rely either on corner stores or long walks to get groceries. Now, we aren't getting ripped off for far higher quality ingredients than the corner store... and without the hassle of going to another part of the city. To top it off, they appear to pay workers well and the produce is excellent. A bit bourgeoisie with the curation of dry goods - but it is all in the name of pushing for good quality and sustainable products. That said - the tree-free toilet paper is trash and easily among the worst TP I've ever used...

Yelp
At last in Old City Philadelphia, now like shopping for dinner in London fifty years ago (but with much better choices) Riverwards Produce offers locally sourced fruits and vegetables, cheese, eggs, meat...

Yelp
Riverwards is just what we needed in Old City! They are wonderful with fresh produce and reasonably priced. So thrilled to have them here!

Yelp
So glad this grocery store opened in old city. I love being within walking distance of an amazing grocery store. They've got a big selection of great produce, including amazing seasonal stuff. The pantry, dairy and freezer sections are really well stocked with quality stuff too.

Sarah G.

Yelp
Great little market with fresh produce and friendly staff - perfect place to shop for fruits, vegetables, anything organic, etc. especially in the winter when the open market behind Christ Church is closed for the season.

Sherri C.

Yelp
So first I just want to say how happy I am to have this market in Old City. Love being able to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables and always fun to look at the different array of products. But one thing that happened today just got me ever so slightly annoyed. I was checking out, the only person doing so as it was not busy. I brought 2 bags with me and needed both for the amount of food I bought. In addition to the woman checking me out, there was another young woman sitting on a stool right next to her chatting with her. Neither one of them made any attempt to help bag. Now maybe it's the store policy to not bag? If that's the case, I can be on board with that. Especially if it's busy. And maybe the woman on the stool was off her shift? But they just continued talking as if I didn't exist. You're not doing anything else. Seems like more effort to ignore someone than take 15 seconds to help. Common sense and being nice can go far.
