What Will It Take to Bring Diners Back to Dallas’s West End? | Eater Dallas

"An early restaurant opened by a local restaurateur in 2004 as part of a long-term effort to build a cluster of eateries on Market Street; it represents the owner’s early investment in the district and contributes to a portfolio intended to attract both locals and visitors." - Diana Spechler

Google
First off.. the plating is top notch! 👌 It tasted amazing!! My quesadilla was very good. The cheese was great and it was super filling. Our waiter was super nice and attentive. The restaurant itself was nice but the prices are a little pricey. Depending on what you get, some are a very reasonable cost. There are deals and happy hours that go on as well. Highly recommend!

Google
We went here because of the high ratings. We were sadly disappointed. The food was average and the price was excessive for the quality and taste. When I think of authentic Mexican, I think of my tia's food, were everything is fresh and flavorful. There was none of that here. The best part of the meal was the horchata. The ratings are totally overblown. We won't be coming back.

Google
Delicious food and amazing smells! Has the happy hour margarita, chips and salsa, shrimp tacos, steak enchiladas. So yummy! The salsa was actually spicy! Our server, Stephanie, had excellent advice for mixing the red chili sauce and cream on the enchiladas. The beans were flavorful and the smoked Gouda in the tacos made it level up from your typical fish taco.

Google
Great spot in the West End Historic District! The patio seems like a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family, weather permitting. Our server Roberto provided excellent service, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Rj’s Happy Hour every day until 6pm is a win, with $5 Margaritas and half price Ground beef nachos (they were delicious), Chili con Queso. Quesadilla de la Casa. They do charge for chips and salsa, but the one salsa they offer has a nice kick that’s somewhere between medium and hot. We received a Dinner menu around 3:30pm with prices on the higher side, but happy hour helps balance it out. Overall, a solid spot with great food and a fun location that provides an opportunity to check out some of the nearby attractions. If you drive and self park or ride DART, you may experience moments where you feel a bit unsafe.

Google
Great Tex-Mex food and excellent service! This restaurant was recommended by staff at the Hyatt Regency and it did not disappoint. The chips and salsa are a great starter, and a little on the spicy side. I had the Enchiladas de Pollo Con Crema Agria (chicken enchiladas)! They were so good and the serving size for the dinner was perfect. I highly recommend this place, and definitely will return if back in the area!

Google
The menu needs a huge change in taste. It’s mediocre flavor. Staff are very kind and cocktails are great but don’t order the food here please.

Google
I really felt the upscale Tex Mex vibe. Best Shrimp fajita I've ever had. The Tortilla con pollo looks small, but it packed a hearty and tasty punch. If time is an issue, that might suffice for a lite lunch. They have 1 halal steak option! Waitress was kind and very attentive. Cons: Expensive food. Budget $75 for 2. The dishes were a decent proportion for 1. Not enough to share a single dish. Mocktails had too much ice. Location is both a pro and con. It's a surprisingly hip place in Dallas' West End district. Come by car. If you come by DART, the West End train stop is one of the scariest spots in Dallas from a safety perspective. Cops are always very visibly present because they are needed.

Google
Visiting Dallas, I went to RJ's in the middle of the day so seating was plentiful. We were seeved by Briseidy. She was attentive and helpful to explain the menu. The tortilla chips were freshly made. The salsa was spicy and delicious. I loved it. Though I must confess it might be too hot for some. The drinks were decent and colorful. Overall, I would visit again.

Yelp
Great Service from Samuel! The margaritas and mojitos were great. We ordered the Fajitas with chicken, shrimp & beef and it was the perfect dish for a party of 4. Thank you Samuel.

Yelp
We came here for a nice lunch while in Dallas and the menu looked amazing. Upon first taste of the rice, then the beans and chicken enchiladas, I knew I was in the worst Mexican food restaurant I have ever walked into! Given the price range, I really expected so much more in terms of authenticity and attention to details. I couldn't even eat my food. It was laden in Cumino [a little can be authentic, too much screams you have no idea how to cook Mexican food!] The corn tortillas in the enchiladas were cold and the chicken was super dry. My husband was starving and actually ate his meal of chicken fajitas that come sizzling hot but were absolutely bone dry and no flavor. His flour tortillas felt like rubber. Even Taco Cabana has better tortillas! My husband from Wisconsin knew right away that they were NOT even heated on a comal! How this restaurant has the rating they have, I have no idea. It reminded me of Mexican food on the Riverwalk in San Antonio.... all touristy, no flavor, no authenticity whatsoever! The Chips and Salsa were a joke! The chips were like from the cheapest bag in a grocery store, and the salsa was terrible. And really, you charge for this?! Even if this place had been decent.... I wouldn't have left a review. It was just a huge slap in the face of mexican cuisine no matter at what price!

Yelp
We came here for dinner on Christmas Day, not expecting many places to be open, we were so pleased to see that RJ was. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays inside , it was very cute! We ordered queso with chips and salsa as well. Both tasted delicious. We were served very quickly despite how crowded it was, and there were so many vegetarian options to pick from, making it a bit difficult for me! I was so happy to see that. I ordered the veggie chimichangas, they were seasoned well. Everything we ordered tasted fabulous, I was full and satisfied with food leftover to eat later.

Yelp
Went there for any early dinner with our daughter and two grandsons. Our server, Ana, was great! She helped my daughter what to get her sons for dinner, and she was totally helpful. We never had to ask for anything. We even spoke with the manager, to tell her how much we enjoyed our visit there, as well as what a great server Ana is. Oh, by the way, the food was delicious! Ask for Ana, you will not be disappointed in the service she gives you. The restaurant is very enjoyable inside with the lighting and decorations. We plan to come back occasionally, since we only live in Mesquite.

Yelp
I went to this rest to eat and the guy at the desk refused my service animal. I tried to explain the American with Disabilities Act (the LAW) allowed me and my service dog to enter. He still refused. a lawsuit will be filed as soon as I can find a lawyer and I'll end up owning this place and firing this 1dioT. The ADA law states in summary: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires restaurants to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals into all public areas, including dining areas. Service animals are dogs that are trained to perform specific tasks related to a person's disability and do not need professional training or certification to be recognized. Restaurants cannot refuse entry based on fears, allergies, or health concerns, though they can ask two specific questions and may ask to remove a dog if it is out of control or not housebroken. What the ADA requires: Access to all public areas: Service animals must be allowed in any area of the restaurant where customers are normally permitted, such as the dining room and waiting areas. No discrimination: Restaurants cannot deny entry or charge extra fees for service animals. Only two allowed questions: A restaurant can only ask if the animal is a service animal required because of a disability and what task the dog performs. No proof of certification: Businesses cannot ask for proof of training or certification for the service animal. What restaurants cannot do: Prohibit service animals: Restaurants cannot have "no pets" policies that apply to service animals. Ask for information about the disability: They are not allowed to ask about a person's disability. Demand proof of certification: They cannot require documentation that the dog is a service animal. Segregate individuals with service animals: They cannot separate individuals with service animals from other customers.

Yelp
Good Tex-Mex (not great) at a higher price point than I am used to for a similar menu. Chips and salsa are not free but worth the price. Margaritas are very sweet but also strong. We enjoyed a beautiful table by the window looking out into the West End and we were quite comfortable. My partner ordered piccadillo tacos which he said were quite tasty, I had cheese enchiladas which were ok and the portion was so large, I took it home and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. Service was good, no free parking and we had to search for a while despite the fact it was 7:30 on a Thursday night with nothing much happening. Great place to take visiting family who want to play tourists.

Yelp
First time visit and I enjoyed my visit. The decor is kind of vintage meets modern but trendy. Our server was nice but average. Our food was delicious. I really enjoyed the fajitas and everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The sangria was fruitful and tasty. I did think the Mexican candy shots were overpriced and that is the reason for 3 stars. $27 for two shots seems a bit much especially when other places offer the same for a lot less. Overall I would return for the food and stick to either a menu drink or not drink at all.

Evan W.

Yelp
Astounded that this place has so many high reviews and not as many negative. Whole experience was sub par. Hostess sat us at a table that was dirty. The table had the personal belongings and dirty dishes from a very messy family at the adjacent table. (There were plenty of clean open tables, I have no idea why they sat us at the 1 dirty one that needed to be bussed) Quesadilla came out hanging off the plate touching the table when the server set it down. Very greasy, nothing special about the food. Barely touched the food and decided to leave before ordering entrees. Overall food selection was small. The only non-seafood burrito or taco option was a ground chuck taco. In a city with so many good taco trucks and Tex mex spots, don't waste your time and money here. It's not worth it.

Yelp
Yummy Mexican food! I feel like you can never go wrong with Mexican! It's definitely a fave of mine and we found this place while in Dallas! I ordered fajitas and a mocktail watermelon drink and it was sooo good!!! I could have had another mocktail but the drink was already huge! The service was great and our server was quick, food came out piping hot and portions were good! Some had leftovers! Ambiance of the restaurant was lovely! Overall a good place for good drinks and food!

Yelp
I loved this place. We were visiting the museum of illusions and came in to kick some time. We sat at the bar and Bela was at the bar and let me tell you she was awesome. The margaritas were well balanced and we also ordered chips and queso- a steal! Portions was good for 2+. I had the perfect margarita and my spouse had the top shelf. It felt like we had met a friend from way back. We'll be back for sure. This place is a gem

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere and good quality food. Servers and managers are well in tune with each other and provide excellent service

Yelp
The food - 10/10 The drinks - 10/10 Price - 9/10 The service especially at the bar, Sherri is 20/10! Super attentive, communicative, and always ask for refill when needed. Great place to eat, dine and just cool off especially on a weekend.

Yelp
Great service and ambiance was amazing and the food was delicious. What more could you ask. Had a marvelous time

Yelp
Ordered the shrimp fajitas, and they were absolutely delicious! Highly recommend if you're looking for good Tex Mex!

Yelp
Came here before a concert nearby at House of Blues. We had to wait a little while to be seated. Our waiter took our order and the food/drinks came out in a timely manner minus my cocktail which took a while to receive. The food was a good temperature but the spice level was a bit more than expected. The location is clean and spacious. The restrooms were clean and well stocked.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent! Great service and food! I see why they call it the best Mexican food in Dallas! Sat outside on a beautiful day and took in the sights and sounds of downtown Dallas!! Highly recommend if you are in Dallas!
google avatar

Enrique B.

Yelp
The most ridiculously expensive Mexican food, ever! Steak Fajitas for $35, Combo Fajitas $50, 3 small tacos $19. Rice was undercooked, the fried red beans tasted bad. The only cheap thing on the menu is the chips and salsa for $2, which everywhere else is free! Absolutely not worth the price. Never going back.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
We had the steak and chicken enchiladas. The steak was not worth the 50.00 it had good flavor but it was full of fat - cheap cut not worth the money. The enchiladas were delicious. Service was slow, and it was a slow time. The ambiance seems it could a fun at a different time. Stay away from the steak.

Doylina J.

Yelp
Not great food or service. Employees were slow. Followed us out that we did not pay enough yet we were charged gratuity!!!! Will never come back to a place where you feel attacked! How awful!! Do no go!
google avatar

Hetal P.

Yelp
Location is nice.. found easy parking. Have to pay for chips and salsa. A little pricy for ordinary Mexican food. A little bit too cheesy for the kids food. Overall not bad, but definitely not favorite. Restaurant is very spacious with outdoor and indoor seating though. So maybe good spot for drinks and apps

Missy R.

Yelp
Food was beyond amazing!!! We loved how accommodating they were finding us a seat even after we had settled on the bar. Robert was an amazing server. Highly recommend. We sat inside due to the heat, but the outside seating was absolutely fantastic.
google avatar

Brenda K.

Yelp
I chose maybe for my recommendation because the food is wonderful & beautifully plated but they charge for everything! I was looking for my "utensil usage" charge - yep, it's that ridiculous! Chips and salsa are not complementary, they cost $2.07 with no refills! My sister & I planned to split a meal but we were told it would be a 30% up charge for two plates. So we ate off of one! I was waiting for them to say something... Anyway, it's in a dead area of West End in Dallas with no parking near the building.
google avatar

Debby M.

Yelp
Brought a group of 9 to the restaurant. Got there to find out it's not handicap accessible. They have a small wooden ramp they will bring out but it's not flush with the step. Dangerous. The food was good - not great. Shrimp fajitas, fish tacos, enchiladas and tortilla soup were ordered. The whole restaurant was different from when I'd been before - granted several years ago. It used to be a little fancy and upscale inside - now it's more rustic and worn looking? When did that change? I kept thinking I had gone to the wrong place but the street location was right. Samuel was our waiter - not sure if we were making him crazy. He would look mad and then give a great smile. I don't think we were being too demanding. We did have to wait for 3 of our group to arrive so he was waiting to take our order for a while. All in all it was an ok experience. Just disappointed it wasn't the place I remembered. Maybe different owners?

Yelp
Liked the food and service. Convenient location. They serve all drinks and has all TexMex food you can think of. Recommend if you are in downtown area.

Alexandra G.

Yelp
Food was great but our server was not having it. we had to ask for everything twice and he would always forget it anyways. The Margaritas were bomb! Shrimp Cocktail had more spinach then actual shrimp! Music was great!

Jordan G.

Yelp
I had the best waitress ever. Her name was Stephanie. So beautiful! God bless her. She gave me and my family the best service. 5 .

Yelp
We made a reservation here and walked from the Dallas World Aquarium. When we came in Juan greeted us at the door. He was immediately warm and welcoming! We had made a reservation for outside but in the walk i decided I needed to be inside and they were very kind and accommodating. We sat in a comfy back corner booth and our drinks were brought out so fast! After some chips and salsa (that was fantastic flavor and kind of a thick soupy consistency-with just a hint of spicy), we ordered our enchiladas. The rice comes in a cute little pyramid shapes and is so delicious. I ate the rice and beans before I even touched my enchiladas! You can see in one of the photos just how cheesy those enchiladas are! Juan was our server as well and he brought the dessert out (on the house) for my birthday! I really can't tell you how kind the staff is here and how good the food is! Definitely stop by.
google avatar

Leanne G.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. They don't have a lunch menu on the weekends, so you have to order from the dinner menu. This limited our options for a smaller meal, so we decided to order two bowls of tortilla soup and one plate of beef fajitas to share. The tortilla soup was very good, with lots of chicken and vegetables. It was well seasoned and warming. The fajitas were good - the meat was nicely cooked and the onions and bell peppers were caramelized. We also ordered Chips and salsa for $2. It was well worth it - very tasty chips with a nice seasoning blend. Overall, we had a sufficient amount of food. We will be back to try the lunch menu. Service was great! They kept our glasses filled and were very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic service at this restaurant! The manager and crew quickly rearranged tables to accommodate our walk-in party of 25. Servers Angel, Jenny, and Robert were very attentive to everyone in our party and chips, drinks, foods and checks were all delivered to us quickly. They even provided separate checks for everyone. Wonderful experience at RJ! We will be dining here for years to come!

Jessica R.

Yelp
Visiting Dallas for a couple of days. Saw this place had good prices (old menu that's on Google) I posted the new menus here. Upon arrival to the restaurant we noticed lunch specials outside, we went around 2:15 and we intended on having lunch, no paper menus. Scan QR and it was a newer menu. Prices for food during lunch is reasonable. However the prices after 2pm is more than doubled. We ordered fajitas to share.. our waiter told us it would be enough for two people that is why the price was higher. The size of the meal was not filling for two people, they only brought out one plate of rice and beans for one person... overpriced for such a small portion. I have never been to a restaurant that starts serving dinner at 2pm. They didn't have the time outside for the specials either, so it's misleading.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Amazing service!! Came here with my boyfriend and was served and waited on by Mr. Quan. I have a complicated allergy list and he made me feel heard and safe with eating here, checking with the chiefs and others to see what accommodations could be done. Not a local to Dallas but I'd come back just to eat here!

Olesya T.

Yelp
Great food, menu is very accurate to the actual food. So delicious. The service was amazing and so quick. So friendly and such a great envirom
google avatar

Laurie O.

Yelp
Rj Mexican Cuisine had a clean and friendly atmosphere. The chips and salsa was good. The hubs ordered fish tacos he enjoyed it, but wish he requested corn tortillas. The tortillas were store-bought. I had sour cream chicken enchiladas they were ok comes with three. We both enjoyed the refried beans and the rice was ok. We believe many products were store bought rather than made from scratch. The "perfect margarita" was good. Overall, it was good food. We would probably not go again.
google avatar

DiAndra H.

Yelp
The was actually a pretty nice spot. Has inside and outside seating available! The service here was great, food was even better and the drinks a definite plus. It's a kool little vibe, on the corner so it's plenty to see

Yelp
My sister recommended this place to us and it did not disappoint. We were seated right away and our waiter Alex was great. Very attentive, had great recommendations, and made sure we were good throughout the night. Now on to the food. We got the guac with chips. I asked Alex beforehand if it was good good. He replied with it's his favorite and boy was it good!! Prob the best guac I've had in a while. Very flavorful. We also ordered the chicken enchiladas and combination fajitas. Everything was good. The fajitas were great, well seasoned with every bite. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. I wish I took pictures but trust me, it's worth a try.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
Ambiance was great! Outside patio is super cute! Margaritas were just ok for the price. A little too sweet for me! Food was good but a little spicy. Service great!
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
1st time at this place. My family was greeted and shown a table immediately. The server was by with water, chips, and salsa as well. The restaurant was clean and the service was great. I appreciate good food, and this did not disappoint. I must say the chicken enchiladas were a HIT! I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Alejandra B.

Yelp
I would give zero stars if possible. Worst Mexican food I've ever had. Everything was prepackaged and tasted of preservatives. Prepackaged chips and tortillas too. Expected more as this is an "upscale" restaurant. Disappointed to say the least. If you're reading this beforehand DON'T DO IT!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm all for trying a new restaurant, but the advertising for this place was a bold face lie. We came here because on their website, FB, and IG pages, HH is advertised Mon-Fri 11am-6pm. Upon arriving, it took 10-15 minutes after we were seated for our waiter, Pedro, to come to our table. We weren't too hungry we simply came to enjoy a drink or two. Two margaritas, one appetizer, with salsa and chips is all we ordered. The salsa was spicy asf, but had a good flavor. I just couldn't get past the heat to actually enjoy it. My margarita (watermelon/mango mix) was extremely sweet, which hid any signs of actual liquor. My lady's house margarita was nothing to rant or rave about either, but at $5.00 a pop, we weren't expecting much. The queso was awful! Thick and gritty with a hint of spicy, which again made it hard to enjoy. Finally, we asked for our bill all to be hit with the okie doke that our bill was $43.14. WTF?!? So, my lady showed Pedro the HH advertisement on their website, to which he replied, "We no longer use that website. I have spoken with management to deactivate it." But what I found strange from his apparent lie was, "If the website was no longer being utilized, why was their current Cinco de Mayo celebration specials being advertised on it?" Not to mention the same daily lunch special that are posted at the front door in the restaurant. At that point, my lady and I knew he was full of shyt, so we paid our bill and left. I called to speak with a member of management, but no one answered their telephone. I wouldn't dare recommend this place to anyone. Do waste your time or money, Yelpers. Roni's pick

Amiee B.

Yelp
Fist time here. Went with family friends. I ordered the beer-Margarita and that was way to SOUR...ugh... couldn't finish it nor enjoy it.. Chips & Salsa was good here. Not free. Like 3$, I believe. I order the vegetable pasta could use more seasoning and sauce, but was a light 16$ dish.

Sam B.

Yelp
The steak is delicious and margaritas are strong and tasty, so worth it if you want a drink.
google avatar

Rebeca Sheehan ..

Yelp
Came in off our tour to a delish carrot cake w vanilla ice cream and a delish mango sauce. What a great way to end our mother day weekend trip
google avatar

Stacey S.

Yelp
This opera Hispanic music is the worst vibe ever !!! Please stop playing this music!! We left because of it. Food is good. Margaritas taste like they are from a cheap mix. And cheap purée additives. We asked the waitress if they charged for chips and salsa and she said "no, it's $2" .... What?
google avatar

Maricela T.

Yelp
Sherri was on point on my drinks great customer service keep doing it ...was celebrating a birthday
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
Juan, our server was amazing! Recommended great margaritas and the chips and salsa were great--the salsa with just the right amount of kick. The area is great--beautiful historic area and the inside of the restaurant is modern and sophisticated...surprising considering the exterior!

Yelp
Decided to try a new place and came to RJ Mexican Cuisine for Valentine's Day with my partner. While we waited for a table, a Black couple was told by a host that it was a 40 minute wait, and they sat at the bar instead. No one left the building, and a Hispanic couple walked in and was told the wait was 25 minutes. Still, no one left the building. I think you know where I'm going with this...yea, it really rubbed us the wrong way, considering I'm biracial (Black & white) and my partner is Black. Anyway, we decided to stay because it's Valentine's Day and everywhere was busy. Our waiter, Pedro, was fantastic. The drinks were strong and flavorful, and the chips and salsa were good. However, the queso tasted very average and was not flavorful. The enchiladas we ordered were decent, but the rice almost tasted store bought (I'm sure they weren't, but that's how it felt). The refried black beans were okay. Overall, I don't think I will come back here because of paragraph #1 alone, let alone the food not being the best.

Leslie E.

Yelp
Honestly, the food was amazing, and the restaurant was very pretty, but our server (Esbeyda) could not have cared less about us. She chewed gum with her mouth open every time she was at our table, she never smiled, and she made us feel as if asking her for anything was a huge inconvenience. She never checked on us to refill our drinks, and several times we had to ask other servers to get her attention so that we could order or get a refill. I would recommend the restaurant, but not Esbeyda.

Barbara C.

Yelp
Second time I've been here and both times service is not good. Very slow getting to you, taking your order had to ask for things several times before it was brought and finally had to ask for check. Food is decent but not spectacular. Nachos were pile of chips with a little melted cheese on very top so once that cheese is gone you have a pile of plain chips. Really disappointing. I won't be going back for a 3rd try.

Jordyn B.

Yelp
The margaritas are so good! The fajitas were also incredible. It's an amazing Mexican restaurant and I would come again.
