The Best Restaurants in St. John’s, Newfoundland | Eater Montreal

"The city’s first (of two) Filipino restaurants in St. John’s can be found in a new standalone location in the west end. Bright yellow and red decor liven up the simple dining room and the ube shines purple in the dishes. Pork siopao, chicken java yum rice, and pancit abound with shaved ice dessert halo-halo to finish." - Gabby Peyton

Finally checked this place out today and was not disappointed! No wait for a table, pleasant staff, very well organized menu, and a very clean and comfortable setting. Had the tempura shrimp taco and my friend had the pork belly taco, and they were both amazing, he even got more to take home! For dessert we split the halo-halo and it was amazing! Cold, creamy, and a mix of so many different but complimentary flavors and textures. Couldn't recommend it enough, definitely will be back to try more of their dishes!

This was my first foray into Filipino food and I had a great experience. The portions here are moderate and the food tastes great. The spicy foods aren't over spiced as a tolerance test, but instead rely on the blend of spices to achieve the desired result. The non-spicy dishes were similarly flavourful. There are choices for either end of the preferred palate spectrum. The service was speedy and polite. The atmosphere of the restaurant is well suited to table conversation. I was pleased to note the complete absence of any wall mounted TVs, or loud music competing with the table talk.

TL;DR: RJ Pinoy Yum is a great place to have a full meal or a quick bite, try out the filipino cuisine and have a great experience altogether, in terms of both taste and service. When we ordered our food, we grossly underestimated the portion sizes they offered! This makes it a great value for money and also a good place for a group visit! We tried the Wonton Nachos, Lomi Overload, Mango Graham Shake and Pansit Canton. The milkshake felt like a breath of fresh, tropical air with the snow outside. We felt everything that was offered was fresh and generous. Seasoning was a bit on the lower side, but that's reasonable since you could adjust much of it later and leaves room for preferences. The Wonton Nachos was such a simple but savoury dish! Overall, I wouldn't say everything was mouthwateringly delicious, but fulfilling enough to go back time and again! The people here took great care of informing you about components of a dish that you could possibly have an issue with, offering replacements if possible. They were also very amiable and pleasantly concerned about your comfort and experience. The place looks minimal but pretty, with bold colours and gorgeous photos of their dishes. There's a board at the entrance where you could leave a note - that's a singular feature which would stand out to you in terms of aesthetics.

It was a fantastic experience again for 2nd time! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it perfect for a casual meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring felt right at home. The food Lomi Overload was delicious, with authentic Filipino flavors that truly impressed. Each one was cooked to perfection. Overall, it was a delightful experience, and I can't wait to return!

Tried RJ Pinoy Yum for some authentic Filipino food while in St. John’s. We ordered the kare-kare and dinakdakan—both were good, but not quite great. The flavors were there, but we felt they could’ve been a bit more bold or refined, especially for the price point. That said, it’s still a solid spot if you’re craving Filipino comfort food. The staff were friendly and the portions were fair, but it was a bit on the pricey side for what we got. Worth trying if you’re in the area, but keep your expectations in check—especially if you’re familiar with home-style Filipino cooking.

This restaurant is a must if you're in this area! You have to try the food here!! The prices are really fair, it's not too expensive. The portion sizes are great too, lots of food! It's definitely a great deal. My girlfriend and I both had large plates of food. We were stuffed and the bill only came to $25 before tip! The food is also just mouthwatering! It's so delicious, anything you can try here will be good! I've never been disappointed! Definitely come here if you can!

My wife and I ate here last week while I was on a trip home to NL. We had the Wonton Nachos and Chicken Inasal with Grilled Pork and Pancit. Everything tasted excellent and authentic. My wife is from Philippines and she was very impressed with the food, and so was I. The staff was very kind and friendly. There was low volume pop songs playing in the background for ambience. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We visited there based on some info in internet. Nice place to visit with family. Dishes were Phillipinono. I felt mixed with local, Chinese, and Spanish. Good to eat with rice. Not sophiscated, but become easily full and satisfied. Volume of dishes were good. Not so big, but not too small. Fair. The restaurant is located at old mall and I hesitated to enter at first as a tourist. But inside the restaurant was clean and full of people. Restaurant staffs were also attentive and quickly served for us. Price was not bad totally.

Yelp
Visited twice. A little skeptical before my first visit. What a nice experience. Great food with helpful servers while I tried to navigate Filipino quisine. Not a fine dining experience but a Five Star experience.

Yelp
Food is amazing, service is second to none. Highly recommend the tacos and steam buns. Curry chicken is to die for. Will be back to this place again soon.

Yelp
All of the food is good, but I mostly come here for the pork buns. World class, hands down.
