The Best Restaurants and Bars on Portland, Oregon’s Alberta Street | Eater Portland

"RJ Skillets is an underrated brunch option on breakfast cafe-packed Alberta, with Mexican dishes like fried egg-topped mole enchiladas, chilaquiles featuring house-made corn tortilla chips, chorizo omelets, and hearty breakfast burritos — plus pancakes and French toast for those seeking something sweeter. For lunchtime fare, go for a carne asada and shrimp combo plate, crisp chimichangas, or a steaming plate of beef barbacoa, with churros and ice cream for dessert." - Katherine Chew Hamilton

Portland, Oregon’s Best Breakfast Restaurants | Eater Portland

"Alberta is absolutely packed with breakfast spots, but this Mexican restaurant right on the main drag has become a neighborhood hidden gem for its chilaquiles and chorizo omelets. The star of the menu is likely the mole enchiladas, filled with cheese and a choice of filling and finished with two fried eggs. Kids can choose from things like mini breakfast burritos and French toast, and those looking for American breakfast standards will find plenty of pancakes and omelets." - Zoe Baillargeon

The breakfast skillet with brisket was some of the best food I've ever had in my life, no joke. The French toast was perfect. The bloody Mary's are spot on. The service was incredibly friendly and prompt. The establishment is clean and laid out well. Prices are reasonable. This is a great restaurant right in the middle of Alberta.

I had high expectations since I love Mexican and breakfast dishes, so pairing the two is truly a favorite. I had been wanting to come here for the past few months. I’ll tell you, I was blown away! Lucky for me I didn’t visit on one of their insanely busy weekends. Romeo, one of the partners and the “R” in RJ, was serving and was such a humble and passionate owner. We chatted about his thriving Oaxacan business and how much care and emphasis they put into each of their dishes. I had the chili verde brisket omelette with hashbrowns and Romeo set me up with their homemade tortilla chips and an assortment of sauces, including mole and frijoles. So good! Everything was fantastic and they take pride in their presentation, too. A little while ago they expanded due to demand and they have a lot of natural light from a wall of windows. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere. There are only tables here. No booths like you often find in family-style Mexican restaurants, but then, this is far from your typical Mexican diner and they make a point of proving it. Awesome food, awesome place, awesome owner and staff! Thank you, Romeo, I look forward to returning soon!

Google
I really liked their brunch options and coffee. The jaimaca was not overly sweet or bitter. The presentation of their food is great, the guacamole was fresh. The food is not spicy, which I can understand why they might have toned it down for more people to enjoy. I would have liked to have a spicier option for people like me who love the spice. The Oaxacan omelet was really flavorful and would recommend. The staff were very friendly and attentive, I didn't have to wait for a waiter to notice me they were very quick.

Wow absolutely loved our visit to RJ Skillets this last weekend. Would most definitely go back. We came in on a Saturday morning and were quickly seated to a nice table by the window. The inside space is airy but industrial with exposed concrete but lovely skylights which were perfect for a sunny day. The service was really on point. We felt well taken care of for the entire meal and waters were on the table within seconds of sitting down. The staff was kind and attentive throughout the meal, better service than I’ll get at even some upscale restaurants. Now to the food. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch so you have the option to pick either direction of dishes. I opted for the traditional green salsa enchiladas and by gf went with the mole oaxacan omelette. We also got an empanada to start the meal. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the plating was also quite impressive. The portions were sizable which I always appreciate. Even the fruit side we ordered, which most places would probably overlook, was super fresh with berries and presented beautifully. This place really delivered, and they’re pumping out some great food. Would highly recommend as a great breakfast spot in the area.

This is our first time visiting Oregon. Our first breakfast in Portland and what a breakfast it was! Can’t get over it.. The seating area was spacious. We went in at about 10 AM on a Saturday. The place was pleasantly occupied, not crowded. The service was top-notch. We started with fresh OJ and Coffee. Both really tasty. We then ordered the Brunch Mole Enchilada and Chilaquiles. Delicious would be an understatement! We had mentioned that it was our first time visiting Oregon and the owner/manager (probably) served us their churros - on the house! Even the churros were absolutely delicious! Especially the strawberry compote/sauce that it came with. The area was clean and neat, even the toilets. 100/10 would recommend.

Google
The food here is great! I'm mexican and I usually hate ordering chilaquiles at restaurants because the tortilla chips always come out soggy. That is not the case at RJ's! The chilaquiles are always crunchy and cooked perfectly! The brisket is flavorful, juicy and tender. The orange juice taste like my how my mexican grandma used to make! The service is also amazing. My toddler was hangry and crying so the waiter put a rush on her order without us even asking and her pancakes came out very quickly. They tasted amazing too. Overall an great place to eat!

Google
I found this place by accident. What luck! The Mole! Wow! The coffee was very good as well. The restaurant is beautiful and tastefully decorated with a great vibe. Ramiro (the/an owner I think) shared how he fine-tuned his Mole recipe and how he wants people to feel at home and taste the love in the food. The whole staff must share that vision because I felt so well taken care of. I'm definitely coming back for the Chilaquiles next. Thanks again, Ramiro. This place made my day!

Google
For me, breakfast & skillets go hand in hand, so I had to try this place. I had the skillet with chorizo and it was yummy & well presented. Staff are friendly & take pride in their food. I highly recommend RJ skillets if you ever find yourself hungry for a skillet breakfast on Alberta street in Portland, Oregon.

Yelp
Great food and great service. actually some of the best I've gotten in Portland. Beautiful presentation of food and aesthetically pleasing design and atmosphere in restaurant.

Yelp
I just recently noticed that the hours changed, so they open now at 8:00 which is my weekend preference. Upon arrival, I see that they have expanded their seating area. It is large, comfortable, clean and well lit. I pushed myself to try something other than their amazing mole enchiladas- so I opted for the chilaquiles with red sauce and steak. I am not going to say it was better, but it was extremely good. I am already thinking of my return trip.

Yelp
The three of us arrived around noon, and had a wonderful breakfast at RJ's. We had read that this was a good place to eat, and we found out soon enough that the rumors were justified. I had the chilaquiles with brisket that was topped with two eggs and a dollop of black beans on the side. V and Cyn both had the mole enchilada with eggs. The enchilada were stuffed with carnitas and smothered in a wonderful mole sauce. My horchata was perfect, flavorful and not to sweet. Service was spot on and we had a good conversation about the owners and their three year journey and future expansion.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this place! The food was really tasty and authentic. The chilaquiles were spicy and the tortillas still had a crunch to them. I added egg whites on top and they were so fluffy. My husband got the mole enchiladas stuffed with carnitas and they were delicious. The mole definitely tasted home made. We also had micheladas and a tequila cantarito and the drinks were both amazing. I didn't get a picture but the pancakes were also delicious. I was not a big fan of the churros because they had a strawberry filling and I found them too sweet for my liking. The service was great! We had multiple servers check on our table multiple times. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. We will 100% be back!

Yelp
I'm updating my review from a 4 star to 5. Since my last visit, I have considered coming back multiple times. If you haven't been to RJ Skillets recently, it's worth coming in to see their expanded seating. They still don't serve lattes, but the food is over the top amazing.

Yelp
The food surpassed my expectations. We had breakfast mole enchiladas and a breakfast tostada with birria, both of which come with eggs to order on top. I haven't had mole sauce this delicious in a long time. It was the perfect balance of sweet and bitter, with strong cinnamon and other spice notes. The tostada was crispy and topped with crema and cabbage, and the birria was braised in a green chili sauce which was a dream. The restaurant was eerily quiet for the Sunday before Labor Day, but we had the place mostly to ourselves. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and the interior is decorated with art and maps centering around Oaxaca. Our server was obviously new and in training, but was friendly and eager to do well. I tried to order my eggs poached, which threw him off because there wasn't a button for it on the ordering screen, so I went with over easy. I'm confident the chef could have made a poached egg, as the over easy were perfectly cooked, but I didn't think pushing on it was worth the stress to the new server :) Other staff were friendly and attentive, so our coffees and waters never went empty. I would love to come back, for any meal any time of day.

Yelp
I must say this might be the best breakfast burrito in the town. I remove the bacon and go with Chicken, and I must say it's F'ing fire. The ingredients are fresh, the service is great, and location is central. Definitely a neighborhood hidden gem, and I wouldn't miss out on this.

Johanna M.

Yelp
The flavors and service were divine! We were warmly greeted by a server who explained that the restaurant was just expanded. We came at a great time with no line and were seated promptly. The server gave us a bit of restaurant history and handed my small group menus. The chilaquiles (green & red) with brisket were incredible. We also ordered the barbacoa plate and I was impressed my the flair this dish. The barbacoa had a delicious hint of smokiness to it that I don't normally taste this dish at other restaurants. My favorite was probably the selection of salsas that were brought to the table. It included- habanero, mole salsa (not like your traditional mole), verde, rojo and another I can't tell recall. We ended brunch with churros con cajeta. One of the best Oaxacan brunches that I've had in a long time. I will be back with family and friends very soon.

Yelp
Best Veggie Enchiladas ever!!! While browsing Alberta on the lookout for Al fresco dining I stumbled across RJs. Never heard of them before but the menu sounded good so gave it a go! I had a dog with me as well and they promptly brought her out a "doggy margarita" aka bowl of water. The waiters were very friendly and attentive. We started with the chips and salsa with guacamole which had a great presentation and flavor. My friend and I both had veggie enchiladas and spicy margs and both were delicious!! I will be coming back for sure!!
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Mexican breakfast with excellent hospitality. Server walked around with a water pitcher periodically for all guests . The pico de gallo compliments the mole to a tee! 10/10 recommend you come out and support this family owned business.

Yelp
When I say that this was the best breakfast burrito I've had, I mean it. I was in the area and walked past here and decided to grab some breakfast and I'm so happy I did. The restaurant is cute, not a lot of thrills but absolutely clean and smells delicious. My server was amazing and on top of his game. I have an egg allergy so getting breakfast food without egg, is always a challenge for whatever reason but not here. When he brought out my food he double checked and also mentioned "no egg". Something that doesn't always happen and is a reassuring thing. I think I might have scared everyone around me with my manners while eating this however, it was that good. I think I inhaled it. The sauce pairing was delicious and I couldn't decide what one I loved best since the flavor profiles were fantastic. I'll be making sure to adventure to this side of town for the food. I suggest this as your first stop and to walk down after to see all the cute shops!

Yelp
I have no words to this place, the food is delicious with authentic oaxaca flavor, the chilaquiles and the mole are absolutely amazing, and the service is super fast Joel is very kind and social definitely is a must in portland.

Yelp
Awesome place all around! Delicious food, excellent service, nice location and ambiance. Loved it here. We got the Barbacoa and brisket omelettes and they were both super good with yummy hash, brown potato potatoes. Very highly rated.!!!

Meralina M.

Yelp
My very first impression of this place is that the customer service is amazing. I did not get a picture of my other friends breakfast burrito. He is quite picky and they were incredibly accommodating for a no egg add extra potato, no onion, no bell pepper breakfast burrito (yes that means basically meat and potatoes haha). But they had no problem going in and writing exactly what he wanted, and my friend said it tasted great!! My friend order the chorizo omelet no bell peppers and added jalapeños, they even asked how she would like her jalapeño prepared, they sliced it and put it inside the folded omelet, and they must've given her a whole jalapeño worth! She said the inlet was very good and it was huge. Their potatoes were also great. I got the chilaquiles rojos con carne with egg over hard. It was a great sized portion, there was a good amount of steak for the uncharged price and the eggs were cooked well. The chips were also still crispy which I loooved. The sauce flavor wasn't my favorite (mi abuelitas recipe is a lot better lol) but it didn't stop me from eating the whole plate anyways :) (my 5 star is really a 4.5 because of the flavor, but small businesses deserve the extra points!) Their horchata was also quite good. The parking is just street parking in a neighborhood.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place. The food was delicious, the service was top notch. The staff were friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I celebrated my birthday and Mother's Day here with my family and I couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you RJ Skillets!

Erika L.

Yelp
I'm a foody and I had to write a review. Chilaquiles and Enchiladas de Mole were AMAZING! So delicious. Authentic Oaxacan food. Almost everything is made from scratch!! I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely loved RJ Skillets! I called ahead for a reservation and they had a table ready and waiting for me. I ordered the mole breakfast enchiladas and they were amazing! I also loved the different hot sauces they brought out. Service was great. Food was authentic, delicious, with short wait times. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and was not disappointed. Incredible food, and amazing service! My husband said it was probably the best enchilada he's ever had. We enjoyed everything! We loved the chips and salsa (with 4 flavorful salsas), carnitas enchilada plate, and mole enchiladas with brisket. So excited to have discovered this restaurant and look forward to coming back! The weather was nice so we ate in their outside dining area which was very comfortable, and a great spot for our stroller and a high chair.
google avatar

Yelp
Stupendous! The chicken mole was excellent. This place is a gem! The service, drinks, everything was amazing.

Yelp
Great food and service! Fresh squeezed OJ! I had the brisket omelette and it was delish!

Yelp
We found this spot on Yelp and decided to try it in a whim; we are so glad we did! We were quickly greeted and seated on the patio with our pup, a bowl of water was already waiting for him. There were a good variety of options on the menu without being overwhelming, and a note that 75% of the food is sourced from local farmers. We both ordered chilaquiles and asked for a side of carnitas for our pup. The chilaquiles were delicious! Neither of us had ever had them before and now we aren't sure we ever want them from anywhere else. The side of carnitas was huge. The service was excellent and the entire experience could not have been better. We were surprised the bill was only $35 for all our food and drinks. If we lived locally this would be one of our regular spots.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Wow que delicia! The food was amazing, the restaurant was clean and I loved the open concept layout. Our server was very friendly and attentive he checked on us multiple times and we really appreciated that. The food came out fairly quick and it exceeded our expectations. The tortilla had the ideal crunch for chilaquiles. The steak was buttery soft and cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back, I think we found our new breakfast spot.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Easily one of the best omelettes and breakfasts we've ever had! We walked in right after the rush and were set down right away. Service was great, very laid back vibe, and the food came out quick. I had the green chili brisket omelette and it was packed with amazing flavor. The eggs were fluffy and the green chili sauce made was just awesome. One of the best breakfasts I've had!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Came here as a suggestion from a friend and really liked it. Service is 5 stars and the food is delicious. Great timing on the food coming out as well. Will come again! Try the salsa's too!
google avatar

Vinnie B.

Yelp
Update after 2 more visits, happy to say they're legit good and one Portland's finest examples of great food and service.

Katy G.

Yelp
Quick service and the food was delicious. Pancakes were fluffy and the chilaquiles were AMAZING. Would definitely recommend

Yelp
Usually I don't like sit down style Mexican restaurants as much as taco trucks/taquerias since I'm a taco guy and like quick, cheap street tacos mostly. But we stopped in here since I was with my dad who doesn't like tacos as much and I thought this place seemed a bit Americanized and milder for him. While they do have many of the standard rice & bean enchilada/burrito standard fare, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety. I chose one of the seafood combos - Camarones ala Mojo de Ajo, which was a bowl of shrimp sautéed w/ butter and garlic and served w/ beans, rice & tortillas to make your own Shrimp Tacos. Very good. I've also tried their Mole Enchiladas which is my favorite dish of theirs (i believe only available on breakfast menu so before 2 pm I think). I just got veggies w/ it but it was quite tasty, and they had quite a variety of veggies in there. I've also went back to try some of their standard breakfast items (they have some American classic options like pancakes, French Toast, and a limited kids menu for the less adventurous eaters). The skillet was pretty good w/ brisket and the salsas as well as the pancakes. If you're looking for brunch on Alberta, whether you like Mexican or not or vice versa i would say this is a great spot, never a wait either which is how some ppl judge the quality of the restaurant but rest assured no line bad food here.
google avatar

Claudia C.

Yelp
I've waited so long to go here and it was definitely worth it! The food is delicious and has an authentic taste. The Chilaquils were crispy and not soggy. The French toast was good as well. A must try brunch spot in the Alberta district. I love that it's Latino owned
google avatar

Carmela G.

Yelp
If you love great food with extremely fast service and respectful and clean service, you should start heading your way here!!!

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast and service at this family owned and operated business on Alberta. The interior is decorated like a comfortable Mexican home. The daughter got the Chilaquiles, which she loved, and I got their Green Chili Brisket Omelet. OMG! What a perfect ratio of meat to egg to cheese! Wonderful! The flavors within the brisket were deep and savory, and the three types of salsas served on the side allowed you to add just as much blend of flavor and heat you wanted. Brilliant! We also got a side of the fluffier and tastiest pancakes we've had in quite some time. The daughter kept saying how we had to come back for dinner soon. No problem for me! I am happy to support our local restaurants, and I highly recommend you do too!
google avatar

Yelp
Quite delicious breakfast spot with nice outdoor seating area and very friendly staff- there is a reason this place has such high reviews, it's 5 stars!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
If you are looking for some authentic food this is it! My favorite were the chicken and the steak tacos. Their salsas were absolutely delicious! Their mixed drinks were great too. More importantly our server Brian was over the top patient and kind. His customer service is truly first class! Loved this little spot and can't wait to visit again soon!
google avatar

Hyunmi P.

Yelp
Mid-meal, drafting this because it's soo good! Food is amazing! (extra points for alllll the salsas, mole, and guac) Service is even better! Thank you, Romeo!
google avatar

Ally D.

Yelp
This place was an absolute gem to find. We were there for breakfast. The bloody Mary was strong and tasty. The chilaquiles was absolutely delicious. And the mole enchiladas were something special. What's clear is that they make all their sauces in house AND they do it well. This was so delicious and reasonably priced. Absolutely go here.
google avatar

Christian S.

Yelp
What a gem. Wife and I were visiting for a few days and so happen to come across this absolutely wonderful establishment. As we walked in we were greeted, seated, and promptly fed. When we sat down, a local couple convinced me to go for something I would not normally order. A brisket omelet. What an absolute delight. The dish was amazing and so flavorful, every last bite was an experience in itself. We will definitely be coming here on our next visit to Portland. Don't hesitate the food is amazing, the staff is friendly, and service is excellent. 10/10

Yelp
This was one of the best places I have ever been to for Brunch. The service was amazing. I will go back to this place once a month. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the breakfast mole enchiladas. Omg omg soool good, All the ingredients are mostly local . The prices are pretty good.

Yelp
The best food!! OMG the brisket literally melted in our mouths. Service was so good. Food was amazing 10/10.

Yelp
RJ Skillets is an excellent Mexican restaurant in the Alberta Arts district. Simple menu, delicious food, and really great service.

Sophia A.

Yelp
Awful service. Food was pretty good but the waiter was a younger guy and was super rude and made the entire experience miserable for me and my friends there for a birthday breakfast. he acted like we were an inconvenience the whole entire time. He also took my card to the back and came out for 10 minutes without it and when asked where my card was the staff and him acted confused like I never gave it to them?? Wouldn't recommend this place unless you're taking out since the food wasn't bad.
google avatar

Jordan D.

Yelp
Super solid spot. We got veggie chilaquiles, hash with brisket, and a French toast platter. The salsas that they provided were so so good. For my spicy averse companions - the mango salsa was still doable. For me, I can never get enough salsa verde. Everything was delicious & we finished every bite. Service is good, staff is kind, pricing is reasonable. Would go again!
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
If you're tired of the aloof Portland customer service, this is your new spot! Staff is always friendly and professional. The restaurant is beautiful inside and also offers outdoor seating. The food is amazing! Very authentic, and always delicious! I've had their breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and I'd recommend them all!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Take my money. Hands down some of THE BEST tacos in Portland. The angels buzzing through this place dropping off amazing dishes and drinks should be protected at all costs, they got that hustle and turn out insane food. I will come back as much as they let me.
google avatar

Just F.

Yelp
Lucky me, I was able to hit RJ's on a weekday, sat down right away, cute little spot. The service was great and the Mole Brisket Enchiladas were what I was expecting, yum city! I can not wait to go back....
google avatar

Pavel S.

Yelp
Great food at an unassuming restaurant. Food is the king here; presentation makes he food top end... and the taste makes it extraodinary.
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
First meal upon arrival in Portland. The superiority of west Coast Mexican food over East Coast appears secure. Had Chilaquiles, enchiladas en mole and a fantastic Maria Sangriente ("bloody Maria"--with tequila). They ran out of food on July 4-we were lucky to get fed!
google avatar

Raquel S.

Yelp
Warm, friendly, welcoming & attentive staff... delicious food! I don't normally have tequila with breakfast, but I have no regrets! We came for breakfast, I'm excited to go back for dinner in the near future!
google avatar

Keegan C.

Yelp
I don't write many 5 stars but this is one of them. We had the heathy bowl that tasted so good and the brisket mole enchiladas. Fantastic! Service was very good. Met one of the owners "R" in RJ and loved his story. We'll be back.
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
So good! The staff was so friendly, not super expensive. It is crowded because it is a small space, but not a super long wait. They give you the right amount of food, not too much or too little. I finished my meal, and the horchata
