Yelp
Nicest dog-friendly burger & beer place we've found in Bastrop (though there's one in Smithville, too).
They give a choice of buns. We chose jalapeño cheese buns. We didn't detect the cheese but saw a few little flakes of jalapeño on the bun. It was a good bun, and was nicely grilled, but both our buns were cold on the outside. Not sure how they get it grilled on one side and refrigerator cold on the other, but it was still better than most hamburger buns.
They serve their burgers open-faced and bring ketchup, mayo & mustard to the table so you can dress your burger to your liking. My bacon cheese burger needed nothing, but the mushroom swiss burger my better half ordered seemed to enjoy the company of mayonnaise. They don't all how you want your burger done, so speak up if you want a choice. They automatically shoot for medium-well, but ours was more on the well-done side (though still juicy).
The beer was good. They didn't have a large selection, but we like Stash IPA. They bring out a can and a beer glass. You open and pour your own.
We like the fries here, for sure: natural and hardy. No complaints at all.
It's not a large place, but there are three seating area options: indoor, sunny front porch or shady side porch. The porch is dog friendly.
The highlight was the appetizer. Their most famous burger is topped with jalapeño and cream cheese. We've ordered that before, but this time we ordered the appetizer version, what was really delicious. They cut the tops off three very large jalapeños, remove all the seeds and membrane (rendering it mild but still flavorful), fill it with cream cheese, wrap it in a slice of bacon and grill it nicely. I mean, how can that not be good (it certainly spares no calories), but it was the best jalapeño appetizer we've found in the area. The grilled flavor really came through.
We'll be back, though we may avoid peak times. It gets crowded. There's no hostess, so seat yourself and they'll bring you a menu. Service was attentive, but slow. They could certainly have used one or two more staff members to handle the Sunday afternoon crowd.
