Best Texas Restaurants on the Drive Between Austin and Houston | Eater Austin

"Burgers are a road trip staple and the Bastrop casual restaurant offers so many iterations of the bun-patty combination. There’s the over-the-top Destruction Burger with avocado, bacon, pico de gallo, queso, cheddar, Swiss, and the beef patty; sliders; the open-face chili cheeseburger; and the vegetarian-friendly black bean one. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

I wish I got our waitresses name because she was so sweet and very accommodating to our needs. (Pretty eyes with a piercing) Will for sure come back to dine in this establishment if I’m ever in the area again. I probably wouldn’t order the chili cheese fries just because the shredded cheese seemed too dry for my liking but it had a good flavor to it. The hamburgers are huge but very tasty.

There’s a lot of buzz about this spot—and after finally checking it out, I can confidently say the hype is real. The menu is packed with incredible options, from comfort food favorites to creative dishes you don’t always see in a small-town restaurant. The service was just as impressive—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. If you’re passing through Bastrop, this place is definitely worth the stop.

We waited until after 3pm to miss the lunch crowd, we did not miss the crowd. Thankfully, they have additional indoor areas. So, accommodations... good. Servers were very friendly and informative. They also have different recipe buns that accentuate the whole burger experience. Jalapeno / cheese bun for me, thank you very much. So, beef good. Really good burger and was made to perfection. If you drive by and your hungry, just stop. You will not regret it, it was really tasty.

Quick service, seating inside was comfortable and more in the outside area. Bacon cheese burger fantastic and juicy, Avocado burger same, and the layered queso bean dip hit the spot

Google
Hands down the best hamburger I have eaten. I had a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, on a jalapeño cheddar bun. I believe their buns are brought in fresh from a local bakery. I also had a chocolate peanut butter, milkshake, and fries. This place is legit. Will be back.

I had a double cheeseburger that had a great smoky taste and my waitress Shyanne was an amazing! I highly recommend this one!

We stopped here cause my husband said that he had heard that this place is good and they are right! When we first got here I could tell it was their lunch rush, they have seating inside and outside but we decided to sit inside since it was so windy. Well when we came in we were greeted with a warm welcome we sat in the main building cause we were starving, they did let us know that it was about 45min-1hr for food and we said that was okay. Our waiter was super nice and accommodating we got some fried pickle spears to start, but we also put our main order in since there was a long wait. The main building is small like very small, if you have a party of 5 or more do not sit in the main building please! The food was delicious and our burgers came out within 30-35min from when we ordered. I am only giving 2 stars on atmosphere because like I mentioned the main building is small and cramped, we were sitting in a corner table and the table behind us had 5 people with them so they had to add a extra chair on the end. So that way to go out was blocked and the table next to us was also blocking the walkway I had to tell this lady excuse me like two times for her to move her chair and she just got up from her chair expecting me to push it for her???? This lady was also sitting at the edge of the chair had the whole chair in the walkway we were trying to leave and pay that really annoyed me. So please if you are eating in the main building don’t be a c*** and make space for people to get by.

Google
My 1st ever 5 star review??? Fantastic establishment. Thoroughly impressed 👏. We went at 6:30 pm on a Saturday. There was plenty of parking and seating and we were greeted immediately. Our server, Sarah, took our drink order as soon as we sat down. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and they were LITERALLY the BEST I've ever had. All of the staff was focused but not stressed and they functioned like a team should. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time for fresh cooked, REAL food. I ordered the green chili chicken with fries and a side salad. My husband ordered the jalapeño and cream cheese burger with fries. Our food was cooked perfectly 👌 (if you're sensitive to salt, ask for less on the green chili chicken.) Our drinks were kept full at all times. The tables, seats, and floors were clean. We had a hard time finding a fly even though there's tons of traffic in and out of 2 different doors. Also, the bathroom was spotless. I can't say enough good things about this place and I can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Best burgers and fries ever, very nice staff! AC inside or covered patio. Sweet tea was excellent as well.

Yelp
The good and the not so great. Burgers are an A+ every time. Nice grilled flavor and usually perfectly cooked. The service is super friendly but anything but quick. I have been here twice and waited over an hour for food both times. If you are not in a hurry and want a "leisurely" lunch then this is your spot. It is rustic and quirky and I love that. Very much a Texas vibe. This would be a four 1/2 star for me if the food came out in a more timely manner.

Yelp
Good burger and good service; what's not to love?? Four of us came together and we all had various sandwiches and all left happy. My parents can be a bit picky and they were satisfied as well!

Yelp
Roadhouse was suggested as a lunch option while out and around. Roadhouse was voted as having one of the best burgers in Texas. I decided to go basic and get their bacon cheeseburger. The burger was good-the fries were crispy well done. I went back for lunch with a former co-worker and decided to get the the best burger: their jalapeno cream cheese burger. I chose to get the grilled jalapenos and it was a good mix with the slab of cream cheese and a giant pile of fries. Both times, the burger patty was large, well-seasoned and tasty. I could see why it was voted one of the best burgers. Every visit, service has been friendly and quick. My second visit I got a lot of refills. A LOT. Each time my server asked if I wanted a refill and at the end when I tabulated how many glasses of Coke I had (6) passed 0 judgement and even gave me a to-go cup. This is the other go-to whenever I come to Bastrop, the first being Buc-ee's of course.

Yelp
FOOD IS SO GOOD everything is fresh and the servers are so fast and polite the restaurant was full so we thought they were going to take forever but food came out in less then 10 min love this place will definitely come back

Yelp
I ordered the avocado chicken dinner no mushrooms. Absolutely delicious. The touch of avocado and the sauce are great together. The chicken was nice and juicy. Great fries. The service was great. Busy for a rainy Sunday evening. This is a little wooden house like. They also a a patio if you want to sit outside. I recommend

Yelp
Not to long of a wait Old country feeling Great smoked burgers Great flavor great taste!

Yelp
A great Texas burger. Wonderful service! The western burger with fresh jalapeños is perfection (no pickles). (Tastes like the goodnight good cause at Hopdoddy) Sweet potato fries nice and crispy. Definitely worth the wait and extra time on the way back to Houston. A must road stop .
google avatar

Lili S.

Yelp
I ordered a sandwich and the bread was fresh and not too thick. The vegetables were crisp. I also ordered nachos, which I could not stop raving about! The beans were tender, the cheese was oozing and the chips were crunchy.

Yelp
Cool little spot in Bastrop. Definitely try the sliders so you get can get a taste of everything. Old fashioned cooking with fast friendly service. Depending on the day they can get packed since its a nice stop between Austin and College Station. Worth a stop if you're traveling in the area.
google avatar

Susie J.

Yelp
We had the burger and fries -- and they did not disappoint! Juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. The service was great, and the laid-back, rustic vibe made it even better. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
3.5 We stopped here after hiking at the nearby state park. We were seated pretty quickly and got our drink order soon after. It took a while to get our food and my friend's order wasn't what they requested. However, I took the extra veggies. Now one thing for gluten-free people: their buns are not gluten-free, and they didn't even seem to be sourdough. My friend liked theirs but I could not risk eating a super springy bun. Bummer. The rest was good though. I never did get any iced tea refills. It took a bit to get the check paid but not horrible.

Shannon I.

Yelp
Great food. Hit those fried pickles! Services was on top of their game. Love the non chain ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
First trip, had the famous jalapeño cream cheese burger- phenomenal. Second trip had the Greek burger- also great! The char on their burgers is perfect every time and it really makes the burger. Queso fries were a nice big portion and super tasty. Definitely suggest the onion bun- nice and sweet and SO good. My son tears up their burgers like nobody's business and he is picky about burgers. Don't expect a server to be at your table every 4 bites- they are hustling their butts off yet super kind when you need something . Love that it can be packed yet you never feel rushed to hurry up and finish. Definitely recommend stopping in

Diana H.

Yelp
This was my first time here. It was delicious. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and asked my waitress Raven, to pick which bread it came on and I also asked her to choose between regular and sweet potato fries. When my meal came, she had put half sweet potato half regular fries on my plate. After devouring my chicken sandwich, I asked her what spreadsheet chose for me and she told me it was the jalapeño bread. It was amazing! Usually, I try not to eat both buns, but it was so good, I ate the second half of the bun all by itself! All the staff was super friendly and all help each other so you can always ask anyone that walks by for whatever you need. I would absolutely recommend you stop and eat here if you're in the area.

Yelp
My good friend and I went the other day after work and, I ordered the ribeye with grilled potatoes and man o man it reminded of a home cooked meal 10/10. The service was great I will be bringing my family here soon!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I had lunch here today, fried green tomatoes, Cheese burgers and French fries. Let me tell you everything was delicious. But if there was one suggestion that I would love the owner to think about, is review their French fries, come up with something that makes these spectacular, as everything else is wonderful!

Yelp
The roadhouse is a place to get a decent meal. It's not over the top good. They have some unique meals but they could do a little better on the presentation. The burger with the cream cheese just has a cold slab of cheese on it and is a little weird. Burger is warm but the cheese is thick and cold. The other meals we have had are Kind of the same. The green chili burger have green chili sauce that is watery and not think. It's kind of strange. For the price of these things they should be far better.

Yelp
We moved to the area about 7 months ago and just found our local burger spot! Roadhouse has chargrilled burgers on sweet sourdough bread with perfectly done fries. The menu has a nice variety of options including salads, sandwiches and other local fare. Situated near Bastrop State Park, this hidden gem has a rustic atmosphere with several tables for small groups in addition to outside dining. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall, great dining experience!

Yelp
Stopped in around 12:30, and the place was packed. They have inside and outside seating. Very rustic and neat setting. Since I decided to sit outside and it was in the mid 90s I sat sat immediately. Erichea quickly took my order, and it arrived 13 minutes later. All condiments were either on the side or they brought to the table. Burger was cooked just right, and the fries were crunchy and not greasy. Definitely need to stop in if you are in the area.

Yelp
Didn't find any pictures or reviews of their pork chop, so gave it a try. Decently grilled and seasoned, but not brined. I prefer brined for a better texture, less chance of dryness; however, their chop was solid: not dry (almost dry), not tough. Not the best grilled pork chop I've had, but I am picky, and it is good for a burger joint. Next time I may try their burgers instead, because that's what they are known for. After seeing their slider, it may be a better choice if their burgers are too big for some folks. They also had a vegan portabello mushroom burger. Kinda weird to see someone eat a giant shroom head shoved into a bun, but the person who ate it seemed to like it. Their sweet potato fries were great: not soggy, not too greasy, and not starchy. Their salads were average, what you'd expect from a burger joint. They only used iceberg lettuce in all their salads, not even romaine. That's usually a deal breaker for me. Service was great: friendly, efficient, attentive.

Yelp
Great burgers! Our faves are mushroom & the avacado cheeseburger. The sliders are small, but very filling with the amount of fries they serve! We love that you can sit on the porch and have a beer as well. If you are in Bastrop, it is must have! They also have an easy to use online order & pick up service.

Yelp
Great stop on the way to Austin airport. A rustic building with a nostalgic flair serves up moist flavorful burgers with excellent fries. It's a local favorite and we can see why! Don't miss ordering the sweet potato fries and putting your burger or sandwich on a jalapeno cream cheese bun!!Portions are large and a good and tasty value. We also want to give a shout out to Mike one of the managers who found and returned my reading glasses via priority mail. Nice people, great food. You couldn't want anymore than this! We will be back next vacation!

Yelp
Love the atmosphere at the culebar/1604 location. Always sit and eat at the bar. Managment comes around and says hi to everyone making sure all is good. Good tasting food also. Have to try it out.

Yelp
Me and my coworkers decided to try a local resturaunt around the area and notice that a lot of people were headed here for lunch, so we decided to try it out. The business had a huge parking area for everyone and it was easy to find. Once we arrived the ambiance had a small town vibe to it and the staff welcomed us! I ended up ordering the Jalapeño Cream Cheese Burger, and let me tell you! It tastes as good as it sounds. I ordered it on a sourdough bun and had it served with half regular fries and half sweet potato fries. The presentation was great and so was the taste. Once done we thanked the waitress and payed for our meal! It had a great price and we will definitely be back again to try the other burgers!

Yelp
We were driving through on the way to an appointment and the restaurant immediately caught our eye. We both said "I bet that place is good." We stopped in and ordered the bacon cheese fries for an appetizer and a cream cheese jalapeño burger on a jalapeño bun. To be honest we were not impressed with the bacon cheese fries. As you can tell by the picture there wasn't very much cheese at all. Mostly fries. Definitely would not order it again. BUT ... that burger!!!! It was wonderful and made everything better. We devoured it before I even got a picture. Ha ha maybe next time. We also got the banana pudding and it was delish as well. The waitresses were great and didn't let our beers run out. The atmospheric was awesome. We were able to sit and talk while enjoying the ambiance of this little dive. We will be back!!!

Yelp
Fantastic place to stop while on a road trip. Gotta love that small town feel good feeling We ordered a couple of sliders and they hit just right. The Destruction Slider had that nice drizzle of queso on it. It was the perfect size. The bread was sourdough. Perfect combo

Yelp
The restaurant itself is cool and eclectic with good food and service. It was relatively inexpensive to eat there for lunch. The kids loved their burgers and fries and shared a brownie dessert which they enjoyed. I enjoyed their chili dog which they top with their homemade chili.
google avatar

Laurie Ann L.

Yelp
I love this place! I have never eaten anything here that I did not like, but the mushroom Swiss burger is definitely my favorite! I love sitting outside when the weather cooperates. We have always had very friendly service and have taken friends and relatives there. This is one of my favorite places in Bastrop.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the BEST Texas Hamburger Spots! The Jalapeño Cream Cheese Burger at this Texas restaurant is a culinary delight, offering just the right kick of spice. Their accommodating approach includes a slider size, perfect for those mindful of portions. What elevates the experience is their great, friendly service and the delectably rich chocolate malts. A top choice for both food quality and overall dining experience.

Yelp
We went last Sunday for a birthday, party of 12, and it was my first time eating at the restaurant but some of the birthday party had been before, spoke highly of it, and they let us bring birthday cake. We received such awful service that I'll never go back. We sat out in their new second edition building where we had to move a space heater away from directly under our feet on the floor so we didn't get burned or have our purses catch fire. We arrived at 1 pm and didn't leave until 3:30 because the service was so slow due to the staff having to run into the other building during peek hours of lunch (despite sodas being self served) & they apologized a lot about it. However, it didn't fix the fact that one of our burgers were missing items, two had items we requested be taken off, or that my burger was cold while my fries were fresh off the grill hot. We had only half our table receive food despite the order being taken all at once and we had to tell the birthday boy to eat & not wait for us. The half that received food was done eating before we recorded ours & I was hungry enough at that point that I ate the cold burger and scrapped what wasn't supposed to be on it. We also had two people order medium rare stakes, one of the higher dollar items on the menu, only to both make jokes the stakes were so well done it was as white as them. Again, they were so hungry at that point they just ate it instead of demanding a redo. I felt horrible that the waitress was trying her best but the kitchen was clearly not with the program that day & we gave her & the wait staff cupcakes to make her day better. $70+ dollars for the 3 people on my tab to eat (two of us only had burgers and a soda) and a lesson learned to never go back. It's also hilarious that instead of getting new menus when they price changed, they used white out and marked up prices. We were comparing handwriting & prices between menus during one of the long waits to order as a way to pass the time.

Yelp
SO good! Got a mushroom swiss burger and fries- and just absolutely loved it. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Nicest dog-friendly burger & beer place we've found in Bastrop (though there's one in Smithville, too). They give a choice of buns. We chose jalapeño cheese buns. We didn't detect the cheese but saw a few little flakes of jalapeño on the bun. It was a good bun, and was nicely grilled, but both our buns were cold on the outside. Not sure how they get it grilled on one side and refrigerator cold on the other, but it was still better than most hamburger buns. They serve their burgers open-faced and bring ketchup, mayo & mustard to the table so you can dress your burger to your liking. My bacon cheese burger needed nothing, but the mushroom swiss burger my better half ordered seemed to enjoy the company of mayonnaise. They don't all how you want your burger done, so speak up if you want a choice. They automatically shoot for medium-well, but ours was more on the well-done side (though still juicy). The beer was good. They didn't have a large selection, but we like Stash IPA. They bring out a can and a beer glass. You open and pour your own. We like the fries here, for sure: natural and hardy. No complaints at all. It's not a large place, but there are three seating area options: indoor, sunny front porch or shady side porch. The porch is dog friendly. The highlight was the appetizer. Their most famous burger is topped with jalapeño and cream cheese. We've ordered that before, but this time we ordered the appetizer version, what was really delicious. They cut the tops off three very large jalapeños, remove all the seeds and membrane (rendering it mild but still flavorful), fill it with cream cheese, wrap it in a slice of bacon and grill it nicely. I mean, how can that not be good (it certainly spares no calories), but it was the best jalapeño appetizer we've found in the area. The grilled flavor really came through. We'll be back, though we may avoid peak times. It gets crowded. There's no hostess, so seat yourself and they'll bring you a menu. Service was attentive, but slow. They could certainly have used one or two more staff members to handle the Sunday afternoon crowd.

Yelp
Rereview of a location I had promised not to visit. However we were on a family trip together for a special event and we decided to give a try again "hint, hint" the wife decided to retry. I believe the service has improved drastically and the food is still as amazing and deserving of the Bastrop County Best Of 2024. The Destruction burger is in my top 5 burgers. I would like to recommend if you have not tried this place before give a try the recipe of the kitchen and the great customer service is excellent. The location is beautiful located around a trees and a nice view of Bastrop State Park.

S P M.

Yelp
Food is usually good service is great and since they opened next door they have plenty of seating
google avatar

Donnis M.

Yelp
Chips and queso was good. Salad was good. Shiner bock beer battered fish was soggy. Coating was very thin and wasn't crispy at all. Portion was 4 small "fish finger" size/shape pieces. Service was good. Kitchen was slow. My meal was 2 star. If I go back I would order something else.

Darla R.

Yelp
The hamburger was very tasty. Well seasoned and juicy. Our server is friendly and took good care of us. We sat outside for the weather but traffic going by is pretty loud. Otherwise the ambience is okay.

Diane Gregg ..

Yelp
Not too much vegetarian. The fries are great! The wait staff is friendly and efficient.

Yelp
Great food! Very friendly staff! We love going out to eat there but always forget about it! And sadly, it's just a few blocks away!! We're gonna do better! PS... if you haven't tried the chili, do it soon!!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Great food. Try the Green Chili Burrito with fajita steak. Flipping amazing food and service. Actually better than restaurants featured on "Triple D!" Guy should feature this place on, "Diners, drive-Ins and Dives!"
google avatar

Kara W.

Yelp
We stopped in this little hidden gem on the home from Austin and we were so glad to have found it! It is very small but also super busy. We did have to wait a little for our food but it was lunch time on a Sunday so nothing unexpected. We had the fried pickle spears to start which were hot and yummy! Then we had the Bacon cheese burger and the avocado cheese burger that were both amazing! The sweet potato fries could use a little seasoning but were still good with a little salt and pepper. If given the opportunity we will definitely be back!
google avatar

TaShane O.

Yelp
We visit this place everytime we visit Bastrop! We always get a burger because it is so good. Fries are mid. A little on the pricey side but you are truly getting homemade food. A little busy so there will be a wait. Kinda loud but nothing too over the top. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jordyn B.

Yelp
Went here for the first time and was not pleased. Had to ask for my drink to be refilled after waiting about 10 mins. Ordered the jalapeño burger only to get a cold burger sitting under a big block of cold cream cheese. Server never asked how the food was just handed us our check not "Have a good night" or anything. Definitely won't return.
google avatar

Jana H.

Yelp
Great for steak and drinks with your hubby on date night. Loud if you looking for romance I would try somewhere house. Nice place to watch their tv or eat peanuts and throw in the flood. Staff is always been friendly and good is delicious
google avatar

Lilly F.

Yelp
Let's talk service our server was amazing!!! She was super attentive and constantly ensuring we had food and our sweet tea was full. Now let's talk food don't get it twisted this place may look abandon but it is delicious. I This little country stop is cladded in rust tin to give you the country feeling. Sitting outside is great but being close to the road there is a lot of noise.
google avatar

Jamie P.

Yelp
This old school burger joint did not disappoint. We visited on MLK day so it was definitely busy. Not sure if it's always that busy or because it was a holiday and a beautiful day. It's a small place so they have limited seating inside but quite a few tables on their wrap around deck. When we walked up they told us to seat ourselves. We chose a table outside since it was a nice day. You can tell the servers work hard as they were running around the entire time we were there. They took our order fairly quickly but then it took a while for our food to come out. We split the fried chicken sandwich and my parents split a burger. Both were made to order and came out piping hot. The flavor of the chicken sandwich was really good. The fries could have used some seasoning. Overall, a fun stop on the side of the highway!
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Came in for the first time mostly because I seen the jalapeño poppers on yelp and knew they were going to be delicious and the other food in the pictures looked delicious. Went in with my family and ordered them along with a steak, western burger, blt chicken avocado and avocado chicken sandwich everything was delicious except for my poppers that had the worse case of extra burnt bacon. I couldn't believe they actually served me them.

Yelp
Top notch service, the staff were so kind! The burgers and fries are delicious, fresh patties and potatoes, excellent spot to grab a quick bite in Bastrop, Tx.
