12 Standout Restaurants for Contactless Ordering Around D.C. | Eater DC

"For many Washingtonians, this small D.C. chain sells the quintessential chicken sandwich. After starting its first standalone store on Bladensburg Road in Northeast, Roaming Rooster has quickly expanded to U Street NW and Tenleytown. There’s also plans to come to Foggy Bottom’s Western Market soon. Order here for contactless pickup or delivery." - Tim Ebner

Google
I was really impressed by the food here. The sandwich was delicious and the portion of fries was massive. The honey butter chicken sandwich is seriously greasy — literally dripping with oil — but let’s be real, you’re not ordering a fried chicken sandwich to be healthy. You can order with an iPad and get texted when your order is ready, and Western Market has plenty of seating inside and out. I’ll come back again the next time I have a craving for oily goodness.

Google
I'll keep it simple: Lots of places have chicken on their menus. Not. This. Chicken. You can't get this anywhere else. Amazing! I haven't tried it but I have it from a reliable source that the Extra Hot 🔥 lives up to the "Inferno" description! The Fried Chicken & Coleslaw is an excellent alternative to a sandwich or salad. The staff is friendly and efficient and the line may be long but it moves quickly if everyone has their order ready when it's their turn. If you live, work or are just visiting in the DC metro anywhere near the White House, World Bank, George Washington University or Foggy Bottom then you should treat your palate to an amazing experience here.

Google
This location is inside Western Market near GW. This was my first getting Roaming Rooster and I really enjoyed it. Compared to other chicken sandwich places, they use multiple thin filets to make the sandwich vs one huge piece of chicken. This style accentuates the crispiness of the bread coating and the sauces used, which I like. Note that some of their sandwiches such as the Honey Butter only has the chicken and sauces and no additional toppings like coleslaw or pickles. Also, the person who took my order was pleasant. Price is on point at ~$10. Will be visiting again

Google
Roaming rooster has the best chicken sandwiches in the area. The chicken sandwiches are always fresh and the buttery bun tops off the well seasoned chicken perfectly. My go to sandwich is the honey butter and I usually select hot as my heat level (beware of the Extra Hot heat level). It has the perfect level of spice smothered with honey butter sauce and cheese. Highly recommend this spot if you are craving a great chicken sandwich.

Google
An excellent chicken sandwich full of amazing flavors. The spicy chicken wings were one of a kind. Will surely visit it many more times.

Google
Very good food, solid spice at the medium level - makes me want to try the hot, but I'm a bit nervous. Fries were also really good. I would have rather paid $2 more for an additional wing and $2 less for fewer fries.

Google
Delicious! 2 pieces of chicken per sandwich. Spice was good. I got medium and my spouse got hot for heat levels. The fries were great! The honey chicken and Nashville sandwiches were great. The spouse enjoyed the buffalo sandwich. Got it via Uber eats and it was great.

Google
I haven’t been in DC in two years and I can’t come to the area and not come get Roaming rooster! I had a honey butter chicken sandwich (hold the cheese) with medium heat temperature spice and it was phenomenal! A perfect blend of crispy juicy flavor spice in a bite that’s unmatched! And the fries were great also! (They really need to bring a location to ATLANTA!)

Yelp
Always interested in checking out a hot chicken stand or vendor, I wanted to try the offerings at the Roaming Rooster in Western Market. I ordered the 3-piece chicken fingers and the 5-piece chicken nuggets, one that was hot in spice and the other that was the hottest in spice. While the service was prompt and the people working behind the counter were friendly and sweet, the food was disappointing. The batter tasted fairly flavorless and grainy, while the heat for both the chicken nuggets and fingers nowhere near as hot as I anticipated. While it wasn't a bad experience, as the chicken at least was juicy, I felt the spice experience was fairly underwhelming.

Yelp
Roaming Rooster exceeded all my expectations! When my first choice was closed, I decided to give them a try, and boy, am I glad I did! From the moment I unwrapped my sandwich, I knew I was in for a treat. The juiciness of the chicken was simply mind-blowing, and dare I say, it might even rival the famous Chic Fil A. Each bite was bursting with an explosion of flavors that left me wanting more. Not only was the food exceptional, but the packaging was also top-notch. Everything was neatly packaged, ensuring that my meal arrived in perfect condition. And let's talk about the price! Roaming Rooster offers a fair price for such incredible quality. It felt like it was meant to be, as if fate led me to discover this hidden gem when my original plan fell through. The chicken was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of breading and spice. And let me tell you about the star of the show: the Honey Butter sandwich. For just $10.49, l indulged in a buttermilk fried chicken breast smothered with honey butter and cheddar cheese. It was pure bliss in every bite. Staff was friendly and very helpful. No seating at this location. I'm already planning my next visit because I can't wait to savor their mouthwatering creations again. Roaming Rooster, you've won me over with your juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked sandwiches. Two thumbs up for a dining experience that truly impressed me!

Yelp
I just had an order from Roaming Rooster delivered, and I was pretty disappointed with the food as compared to previous visits. I added cole slaw to my sandwich, because it had been crispy and refreshing in the past. This time it was just a vinegary mess, so much show that I didn't eat it or the parts of the sandwich it was touching. The fries were Ok, but a bit soggy - maybe because of the commute. The rest of my family enjoyed their food more, which is why I'm giving them 3 stars.

Yelp
Respectable prices (10.49/burger) but small portion size. TBH I don't have that big of an appetite and I was hungry after a full burger. As far as fried chicken sandwiches go... not bad but not the best. Juicy meat & good toppings but overall honestly kind of bland. Was hoping for better!

Yelp
Adequate chicken sandwich. Not the best, I certainly wouldn't go out of my way at all for this place, but fit my desires for where I was at. Sandwich wasn't well put together in my opinion, and sauce wasn't well distributed. Flavor and texture were still enjoyable though. Felt a bit overpriced for the quality.

Yelp
Finally tried RR's brick and mortar location after the GW Chick Fil A closed down, and really glad I did. The honey butter chicken is one of the best chicken sandwiches in the area. It's messy so grab a lot of napkins. Hot nuggets were pretty good, they don't need condiments. Be aware that there's nowhere to sit during the lunch rush.

Yelp
This location is inside Western Market. It does tend to be pretty busy during lunch time but the wait time for food was not bad. You get to choose your spice level which ranges from mild to extra hot. I ordered the OG Nashville sandwich. It was made to order and came out very hot and fresh. Unfortunately, it was a bit too salty for me which made it not very enjoyable. Maybe next time I'll try the honey butter sandwich.

Yelp
Roaming Rooster is my favorite place to go to in Western Market. Their honey butter chicken sandwich is my kryptonite- oozing with honey butter deliciousness and melted cheddar cheese. The chicken is always cooked perfectly and the bun complements it just as well. The only reason I docked a star is because it can take a while to get your food. I have found it to be best when you order directly from the kiosk instead of waiting for someone to take your order. If you're super hungry, get the fries too, but I have found the richness of the sandwich is enough to get you full.

Yelp
Stopped by Roaming Rooster near old uni and unfortunately the overall experience was quite disappointing. The customer service was so bad that I didn't even want to try what I bought. I was handed a room temperature water which in the grand scheme of things wasn't that bad but the overall impression was already made. I try to look for positives but I couldn't find one here. Maybe the other locations are better but I'm less inclined to try another one.

Yelp
So I had my eye on this place for quite some time, thanks to IG. So after a YEE, my friend and I, flocked down to RR. I was starving! So the restaurant is inside the Western Market. It's a pick up counter. You order and they make it. Very little waiting time. Especially for a Friday. My chicken was the honey butter. I got medium spicy. Thinking it was going a joke like it won't hit me..even the dude that worked there said its hot hot... but I needed that kick. Just have a jug of water close. The chicken sammich is good as HATTIES in Nashville, I can't say which is better cuz both get same amount of love. I didnt get fries cuz this Sammy will fill you up. Great service btw!! Plenty of indoor seating all over and outside! Please open more locations like in Maryland!! Can't wait to return!

Yelp
It is an okay chicken joint. I've been on a chicken sandwich craze with the Nashville chicken places popping up everywhere and I got the level of hot for the Nashville buttermilk chicken. The sandwich was well constructed except for one thing which I didn't care for The coleslaw mix which they put on it had cilantro which is horrible for me because I don't like the taste of cilantro I wish when they put stuff like this into a sandwich as a garnish that would be written on an ingredient because not all of us like the taste of cilantro. The fries that came with it were excellent Nice and hot and really crunchy just out of the fryer and they gave lots of them, almost like being at five guys, the counter service was good but they were very popular and the food takes a long time to come out. In the future I probably won't get a chicken sandwich from them maybe chicken wings just so I don't have to deal with the whole cilantro issue.

Yelp
+ 1/2 | From food truck(s) to brick and mortar, this spot has been on my radar for over a year now. Customer service = Super friendly, accommodating. Cost = Pricey, à la carte Food = Decent. Honestly, a Chick-fil-A/Popeye's/KFC chicken sandwich with a slice of cheese. Everything was served piping hot, which is a must for me. The honey butter chicken was crispy and flavorful. I ordered a medium, but I swear they gave me the 7th level of hell! -_- It was sooo hot. The fries were just OK. Overall, it wasn't bad. I doubt I'd return, because $18 is a little too much for a meal that doesn't include an extra side or a beverage. __ IG: @f.hux I #yelp and I know things. Yelp
Medium was so spicy but very good. Second time, ordered mild. There was no spice at all. Very inconsistent with menu descriptions. Great addition to the Western Market Foodhall.

Yelp
I ordered delivery and the food was just as awesome as if I had picked it up from the restaurant. It was delivered to me still hot so it came fast. Good service all around.

Yelp
A hidden gem in the Western Market! I came with a group of about ten students on a field trip, and they could all find something that they wanted on the menu. The woman working the register was also very helpful and patient when taking the orders from my students. When we thought they forgot part of our order, she was able to find it for us too. Keep in mind, the spice levels are serious -- it tasted so good, but we were crying from the spicy heat level. An order of fries is large enough for 2 - 3 people, so we had a huge bag of extra fries too!

Yelp
First time trying Roaming Rooster and I really Enjoyed the OG Nashville Chicken Sandwich with Fries. A bit pricey for a sandwich, fries, and bottled drink but hey it's DC!!!
google avatar

Sangho K.

Yelp
Inside the Western Market, among many other vendors, I was told this chicken sandwich place was awesome. I got the OG Nashville chicken sandwich (Hot heat (spicy) level), chicken tenders (Medium heat level) and the coleslaw. The chicken could've been a bit crispier but overall it was good. My spice tolerance is pretty good and the hot level was bearable but it definitely is hot. The medium spicy level wasn't that far off from the hot so if you can't take the heat, go for the mild. The coleslaw also has a slight kick as it has slices of jalapeño in it. Additionally, the eating area is shared with the other vendors so it gets quite loud during busy times. Pick your lunch/dinner time wisely!

Yelp
Great place to satisfy a chicken sandwich craving! The chicken was fried and seasoned perfectly and I also really liked the buns. I would say that the honey butter sandwich did not really have a strong honey butter taste - really just tasted like a regular fried chicken sandwich, but it was still good! I wish it had some kind of vegetable or that they put the slaw on this sandwich also though because it was definitely a bit greasy to eat by itself. Also, we got medium and mild for the heat level and it was not hot at all (and I wouldn't consider my spice tolerance to be super high either). I would probably describe the medium to be more of a mild and the mild to be no spice at all.

Yelp
There was no real line when I got there, everyone would go up and order on the tablet but also make sure you print your receipt so you know what number you are when you call. It took a long time for the food to be done since it is so popular and a lot of people were waiting. I got the OG Nashville at the hottest level and while it was spicy it was nothing that cannot be handled. Great sandwiches from this place and love getting them.

Yelp
One of the best chicken sandwiches ever! Stopped in to grab a quick bite to eat. Ordered the chicken bacon club, the twice fried fries, and the wings. I love how you can choose how hot you want your chicken. Their bacon on their club is delicious. The sauce they give you for the fries is also very tasty! I was a little unsure about the fries, but after trying them I loved them! The fries are twice fried, so they're crispy. The lady at the counter was very nice. The food took about 10 minutes to come out. Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Jeff E.

Yelp
Visiting the DC area and browsing lunch ideas close by, saw this place and had to try. This one takes top spot in my ongoing search for the best chicken sandwich by far. Hot, fresh, crispy and spicy, the club sandwich was absolutely delicious. The huge amount of fries were no joke either. Happy smiling staff, awesome sandwich and a reasonable price! Can you please open in Arizona! We'll done!

Yelp
Aw every time I come, it take forever to get my food. It should never take yall 40 minutes to give me my food when yall supposed to be a FAST FOOD place. Then yall food mid, fries be burnt all that. Yall customer service mid too. Then yall fries little. Yall get so much money and be giving out 2 centimeter fries.

Yelp
Food looks really good and taste good at most. Was I super impressed, no but overall it wasn't bad We got the mild wings, two fries which are shareable so only buy one, mild honey butter chicken sandwich and Nashville mild chicken sandwich. To me mild wasn't hot it was a little heat but definitely bearable not hot at all for my husband he was sweating lol. So it's up to you and how well you can take heat. As far as taste it wasn't super flavorful but it was good enough would I return maybe but I would be just as satisfied with chic fil a and with a better price

Yelp
Mixed review. Convenient in the West Market building. Reasonable wait for a steady stream of customers. Ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich medium heat, bacon, and fries. Sandwich left off the blue cheese and no bacon. Fries were good although not crisp. Medium heat was plenty hot enough. Chicken was very tasty but the dinner roll on which it was served was small. Overall could have been an excellent dinner but left me disappointed for the lack of attention to detail.

Dustin N.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the chicken sandwich! It took a bit to get our food even though there wasn't a line so I would count on this being like fast food but I would definitely plan on eating here again when back in DC.

Jewel G.

Yelp
I recently bought roaming roosters a few minutes ago and didn't expect this. I was eating and as I was eating I realized the chicken was very pink. I opened it all up and saw that EVERYTHING was undercooked. I was already home so I couldn't go reclaim my refund. If you're chicken comes out like this call them out ! I didn't even enjoy my fries 0/10

Yelp
Great food and plenty of it. Chicken seasoned to perfection - be careful with spice level!

Yelp
I usually love ordering from here, but this particular location really disappointed me this week. Placed a very large order with them via uber eats. My driver ended up only dropping off half the order so I called to investigate. The woman I spoke with claimed to be the Manager and said that she was trying to chase down my uber driver when he left because he only had half the order. She didn't do anything to try and rectify the situation - she didn't call uber, she didn't try to connect with the driver, nothing. When she explained that she did all that she could to get his attention but it didn't work, I was expecting her to come up with a solution for the money and food I lost. She kept telling me to drive to the restaurant and pick up the rest of my order. My husband and I share a car and he was at work. I had no way of getting there (which is why I used uber eats in the first place). I explained this to her and she kept saying she doesn't know what to tell me. I mean if you are the actual manager, I would expect some creativity to figure out a way to rectify the situation to appease the customer?? Especially if the customer had already paid for food that was never picked up. You can also say that she was negligent for not paying closer attention to the order going out the door. The driver only knows but so much - you should have done your due diligence to make sure that the complete order was being picked up. All that said, we are Nigerian and we love to see our fellow Africans thriving. We did end up re-ordering our food the following day and it was delicious. My one star is because that situation with the Manager was handled so incredibly poorly. If I had to rate Roaming Rooster overall, 5 stars, no questions asked.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
The chicken for the most part is delicious. I would just suggest they not put the pickles on the slice of white bread because it makes the bread a bit soggy w pickle juice. Maybe they can separate the pickles w the wax paper that they lay in the box, or use a little bag like Popeyes does for its jalapeño peppers.

Braxton M.

Yelp
Roaming Rooster has the best chicken sandwiches. This location however really needs some help. I saw my sandwich buns sitting on the metal counter for 10 minutes before they put my sandwich together (also slow) doesn't look sanitary.
