26 Essential Coffee Shops in Houston

"Though expresso-based beverages and breakfast fare like buildable omelets and bagels are a surefire staple here, European influence reigns over the food and drink menu at this Heights cafe. Greek frappes are served alongside falafel and hummus, gyro sandwiches, meatballs with tzatziki, and glass cases stocked with spanakopita. Beyond the morning fare, there’s a daily happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m., with $2 off wines by the glass and 20 percent off bottles on Tuesdays and Wednesdays." - Minh Truong, Brittany Britto Garley

Google
This place is solid, the coffee is above standard, matcha is just your regular matcha nothing wowing but solid. The food has always been good. The issue I take is the place is a little over prize for the quality. So final review, I would come for their coffees but would pass on their breakfast unless you plan to share maybe the price will be reasonable. ( I had their breakfast on the weekend and it was a lot better so maybe they have a different cook.@

Google
Love the clean and simple atmosphere. Great for late night studying and working. Love that they serve coffee and alcohol, decent prices and can find a table with a plug.

Google
Can’t recommend this place enough. The staff is amazing (Christian is the best!). This is some of the best coffee you will find in Houston. Top quality and flavor! They have a variety of food options! My go to is the Greek salad, gyro, or the kabob! Great place to chat or study. They always have a great playlist of electronic music!

Google
It’s a nice coffee shop with a relaxing vibe. It’s very popular for groups but I also saw several individuals enjoying coffee and lunch & breakfast items. I chose an egg breakfast. It was good. Nothing extraordinary but it was good. It is counter service & the guy was helpful and polite. Our plates were not brought out at the same time (there were 4 of us) so we politely waited on the other 2 to get their food. It was 8-10 mins. That didn’t seem appropriate to me. I know it was kinda of busy but still, I think it’s better when everyone in a group is served at least within 5 mins of each other. There was parking in the lot connected to the spot but it obviously fills up fast. Overall I think Roast & Brew is a great place. Hopefully we can return soon.

Google
AMAZING GET THE GREEK FRAPPE Such a vibe and the food and coffee is really good. The baristas were super helpful too. I told them I liked more coffee forward but still sweet and they made amazing recommendations. Would go back

Google
Greek inspired pastries, US and European wines and excellent coffee selections. Cute atmosphere with plants and art. Great place to work! Understandably well-patronized, so expect to park across the street some times.

Google
Really enjoyed the look of the place and "vibes". It was comforting with ample seating including some places to laze and sip. I ordered a cappuccino and was not impressed(im a bit of a coffee snob), the espresso was overly bitter and burnt. My wife ordered a dulce de leche latte which was more enjoyable. The food was excellent, omelette was cooked perfectly, and damn, the potatoes are mighty fine.

Google
Roast & Brew is our favorite coffee house for late evening drinks (open until midnight 😋). The ice cream coffee (affogato) is really good. Matcha latte is also nice.

Yelp
Excellent place. My only hesitation in writing this review is that I don't want other people to know about this place. It's 10 pm and the place is full. Why? To study and work! Great food, focus music, drinks, what's not to like?

Yelp
Update y'all!!! Extra! Extra! Read all about it!!! Biggest thing I look for in places is consistency, but I do feel this place has gone down hill a bit from the food to the service... Came here late on a mid-week to catch up on some work and ordered a flatbread with Caesar salad and a drink...hubs ordered coffee...I ordered the Freddie Cappuccino (GREEK-style iced coffee) and it usually comes in this "milkshake" style glass with a straw but today they served it in a mason jar and it just wasn't the same. Refer to their website and you'll see what it should be served in... Their flatbread tastes barely warm, a blanket of already cooled down cheese, and overall the food did not taste fresh. It's as if the flatbread was sitting out and brought out barely warmed...not crispy and not really tasty at all... I used to love coming here because they were open late and near my apartment at the time, but it doesn't seem worth the drive anymore. Also, service and having sense enough to not clear your table while you're still sitting there and enjoying your drink...one of the staff members who was bussing the tables was trying to see if my San Pellegrino was empty and in the middle of working I had to look up and tell her I wasn't finished yet with it...it was disruptive and I also felt rushed...especially in the evening when you're trying to focus on work and enjoy your time there...wasn't a fan...

Yelp
I was under the impression that the beans were roasted in-house, but instead they are actually supplied by Geva Coffee. I ordered the nitro cold brew. Had a hint of sourness and freezer burn taste, but was still drinkable. Regardless, it gave me the much desired caffeine I was looking for. Interior space was welcoming, with lots of seating and real plants. Nice place to sit and socialize. The service was ok. Nothing good but nothing bad. Just kids behind a counter making coffee (I must be old when I refer to working young adults as kids). An ok stop for coffee and social area, but not for those seeking third wave movement.

Yelp
This place has ALL the coffee shop vibes. It's a wet and miserable rainy Sunday (following about a week of wet and miserable rainy days) and we're looking for a hot cuppa Joe to warm us up after a lunch out. Tiny parking lot- and it's full even with the deluge of rainfall mid-afternoon. The moment you walk in, you know you're in the right place: indie vibes, international touristy feel. Tattoos piercings and laptops reign next to the "God save the Bean" graffiti. We're currently sitting in low slung back chairs with a tropical plant literally above and between us. TONS of space to sit and work, magazines to flip thru, and easy soft modern music. Ordered the usual: flat white decaf with heavy cream. On first sip, it's a fair bit more foamy than I'd prefer. Yet the coffee is strong and the cup is hot (almost a little too hot) Great place. You can tell it's in the right spot and I'm sure the locals are all about it on the regular. Hashtag: Support Your Local Caffeine Dealer. And, Food can fix the mood.

Yelp
Came here to do work and loved my time here. Ordered a chai tea latte with oat milk which was absolutely delicious. It came with a small tea cookie as well which was a nice treat. The whole was pretty busy while there, but I was able to find a great spot to do work and was pretty productive. Only downside was there were limited outlets close to where I was sitting so I had to move to plug in. Nevertheless, this place was definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
Wonderful and friendly staff. Nice little spot to get some work done with plenty of seating and plugs to keep charged along with the caffeine. The food looked like it had really big portions as well.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a chill coffee spot, this is a great spot that's around the heights area. The gyro plate is pretty good and affordable. The service is quick and efficient. Overall I like this place and will come back.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Great place for early breakfast with some parking and most patrons must live in the neighborhood. Pluses 1. Big menu and omelet was great with gyro, best crunchy breakfast potatoes in Houston 2. Big inside area and also outdoor patio Areas to improve 1. Music was a little weird elevator music with a loud beat I was trying to find a place outside that didn't play the music 2. Our coffees were just okay, will try some alternatives in the future my chai latte was very sugary and the oat foam wasn't there and he was less impressed with his cappuccino Highly recommended for breakfast and I'll be back for lunch or dinner, I bet their fries are really good.
google avatar

Kathy M.

Yelp
Love this place. Best staff. Chill vibes. Best food. And. Best lattes and flat whites. So great that they are open until midnight.

Yelp
Open on Memorial Day! Breakfast is served all day and got a croissant egg sammich with avocados and traditional breakfast with bacon and sausage. It lacked a bit of seasoning, so added some salt/ketchup and sriracha. Wished the croissant was a bit more toasted too. For drinks, got the lavender iced latte and americano. Both were great and strong! There's plenty of seating indoors and as well as some outdoors. Parking - they have their own lot or you can find street parking
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
No complaints. No frills. Strong beans! Quiet, remote work space. Service was great, quick and friendly. If you need somewhere to post up for an extended period of time, where you can also get a bite and a solid latte, this is a great place to start. Croissant sandy was good and filling. Bfast taters were nearly perfect- you know when you don't need ketchup. Side salad was a nice touch. We need more salad, right? Two word review: cozy + caffeine.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go to study in houston. Periodt. I love their dulce de lece coffee - please get this you will not regret it. Also, their seasonal coffees is an absolute must too. Their pumpkin spice latte hits every time. Also, if you're looking for great food as well, their breakfast dishes is a must!

Yelp
Oh man just got in late straight from airport, looked up a nice spot for coffee and food. This amazing place Roast & Brew popped up, as we where driving to it we where a bit leery Lol it's in the middle of neighborhood but wow!! Do your self a favor and come in, they serve breakfast till midnight burgers, pita, bites etc.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in on a Friday evening and it was fairly quiet and there was available parking. A lot of seating indoors and dim lighting. At the counter, I ordered the breakfast croissant which came with potatoes and a Greek salad. I didn't like the fact that there was an upcharge for everything on the sandwich - even $1.20 for cheese - so the cost of the dish adds up quickly. The sandwich was good (after adding cheese and avocado) but the potatoes and side salad were bland. I ordered a mocha latte which wasn't bad, however, I've had better. It's a great place to meet a friend and catch up, but for about $22, I didn't see the value here. It was a great place to try but I don't see myself returning with any regularity.

Yelp
Excellent coffee the ham and cheese was very good. Service was fast. Nice inside decor.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's start with the good things: The space is huge! Lots of indoor and outdoor space- we Ultimately I rate coffeeshops on whether or not I'd rather go to a Starbucks, and I would rather go to Starbucks. Given some of the better coffeeshops that are only a few blocks away, I'd recommend those over this one.

Laz D.

Yelp
Great coffee, food, service, and a perfect spot to work. Very pleasant atmosphere. I stopped by a few times while in town because my friend recommended it and plan to come again.
google avatar

Lorraine I.

Yelp
I love their coffee especially their latte really good And the vibe is great but just a little bit crowded even for the workdays it's packed You can literally have anything here like coffee Food, wine more like one stop shop The parking lot is quite big but not big enough to hold all their customers again cuz they have too many people here.
google avatar

Lauren N.

Yelp
Avocado toast generous portion, filling, and full of flavor. the eggs were the perfect consistency. sunny side up without spreading to the rest of my plate once i cut into it. Sweet potato fries nothing special here. had lots of seasoning on top but got soggy pretty quickly. Nitro cold brew woo you can taste the strength of this one. straight caffeine if you're looking for a strong pick-me-up Chai latte very sweet and couldn't taste the caffeine at all even though we put an extra shot in it Iced matcha latte with lavender this one and the avocado toast were by far my favorites. i would definitely come back for this drink. it was sweet and nothing diluted or lacking in flavor. with i got a photo. ambiance the seats on the side have outlets and enough space to get work done. service. just a grab and sit type of place. hard to get wrong.

Yelp
Right off the bat when you come inside the coffee shop, you're met with nice decor, a clean environment, lots of seating, and natural light. Coffee menu is extensive, they have multiple sizes (which is a plus for me, I like a large coffee ). Pastries could've been better, but it may have just been what I got, so don't count those out. The food looks great, large plates, good portions, and service was excellent!
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
How cute is this place?! Oh my! Roast and Brew is trendy to boot! It's bursting at the seams with coffee shop types, which adds to the ambiance. I made my own omelet and enjoyed a single espresso while waiting. The omelet did not disappoint: generous in portion--including the robust helping of sliced avocado on top--and phenomenal in flavor, I would recommend this little spot for anyone looking for a trendy coffeehouse.
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
Loveeddd the gyro sandwich with fries!! It's really good and I was surprised how good it was. The meat is tender and flavorful. Has a good amount of tzatziki sauce. The fries seem to be made in-house. I like the added red spice. No need for ketchup. I would definitely order this again in a heartbeat. They have pastries, cake, chocolate candy, cold beverages, and wine, in addition to a range of coffee and tea options. There is more seating than parking spots. The seats have good cushioning. The lot was full mid-afternoon on a Friday and had to park across the street. Wifi speed is very good. There are multiple outlets but not enough. Lots of people come to work/study and stick around for a while. The women's restroom is clean. The staff does a good job of cleaning up the tables as soon as it's empty. Music is played in the background but it's instrumental music. Wish this cafe was closer to where I live. Rare to find a coffee shop that stays open till 12 midnight daily.

Yelp
I had a feta pie with a greek coffee, and the pastry was horrible. The pastry crust was soft, not flaky at all. They probably left it out for too long, so it was way past its prime by the time I bought it. The same can probably be said for all the other pastries this place sells. At least I had no problems with my Greek coffee.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Amazing chicken kebab and coffee! Great study environment as well! And stays open until 12am for those over achievers or night owls.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
I enjoyed my breakfast croissant sandwich and vanilla latte , highly recommend Roast & Brew.

Yelp
Roast & Brew is a European-style café and coffee shop in the Heights neighborhood of Houston. It's tucked in a residential area, so it's a more relaxed vibe with a private parking lot. Although we came to grab a coffee, we found they offer Greek foods, international and craft beers, European chocolates, and more. There is a lot of space inside with comfortable chairs and tables. They also have an outdoor patio. If you're looking for more chill coffee shops in the Heights, add Roast & Brew to your list!
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
I came here to change my environment for my livestream. The patio was nice and shady with enough fans to keep the air circulating. Service was pretty quick, no line when I arrive at around 2pm, and I got my order within 10 mins. I got an iced caramel macchiato with coconut milk and it was alright, 5/10. I liked the salmon Ceasar salad I got 7.5/10, the dressing could've been a little better and the salmon was a little dry. Definitely will try some new items next time I'm there!
google avatar

Neema M.

Yelp
Such a cute place and would totally go back. It has a travel ambiance with pictures on the wall of places around the world. I got an iced almond milk latte with SF caramel and it was perfect. Several people around me ordered food and it all looked really good so will for sure be ordering food the next time I go. The service was super fast and friendly. You order at the counter and they call out the order. They have a bunch of outlets, lots of seating, good lighting, and soft music playing. It is chilly which I absolutely didn't mind cuz it's scorching outside. Just be sure to bring a jacket/sweater.
google avatar

Hillary E.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot! There's indoor and patio seating, and plenty of tables (as well as WiFi) if you're looking for a coffee shop to work from. Pretty decent sized parking lot as well. I tried the seasonal maple cinnamon latte, and it was delicious! I didn't love the bakery item (apple popover) as it didn't seem fresh, but I'll definitely try their hot breakfast sometime in the future.
google avatar

Hollie K.

Yelp
Great spot to meet for casual conversation. Good parking, excellent service and good selection of quality food and drink options. I had a vanilla latte and it was great!
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
We came with kids for breakfast and coffee. Everything we ate was tasty- particularly the Gyro Sandwich but also the Breakfast Croissant and Hash Browns were well seasoned and crispy. Above all else, the baklava was delicious and not too sweet. Top it off with good coffee, laid back ambiance, and friendly service and I can see why the place has a steady stream of customers. We'll be back!!
google avatar

Nina T.

Yelp
Could this be a new coffee spot in my list? - inside seating, outside seating - inside: couchess, high chairs towards the window, community tables, single tables, 4 people tables. You pick! (no wobbly tables) - beverage menu choices are wideeee: coffee, tea, smoothie, water, sparkling water, Mexican sodas, beer or wine?! - all day food menu! Yum - cool chill coffee music - free wifi, of course + plugs - clean, natural light and bright, welcoming staff and pleasant ambiance. - a wall of dreamy destinations posters - late hours What's missing? I'm not sure?!? Ahhh, be backkkk!!!
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
I came here to do some work and I loved it! Lots of places to sit and the coffee was good. I will definitely be back another day :)
google avatar

Yelp
Oh let me tell y'all. I don't even know where to start. As soon as you get out the car you're greeted with the shop's ambient music. You walk in, and feel an amazing aura. The baristas are very friendly, and let you take your time. The menu is easy to understand, and they're quick to get your order out. The drinks are good. I got a chai latte with a carrot cake slice, my girlfriend got an iced matcha latte, and we didn't even get to take a before picture. This is the only thing we got to show for.

Yelp
It's very possibly I just caught these folks on a bad day. Everything about this spot makes sense in theory. Private parking lot. They used the space beautifully- exterior gazebos, patio seating, and a natural light filled interior. They offer a welcoming interior decorated with care while carrying unique menu offering beyond the traditional coffee shop fare for all times of day. Paired with varied seating for study, meetings, or a light lunch, beautifully crafted drinks, eye popping entrees, and strong WiFi this spot should be a home run, BUT, something just didn't translate in practice. On my trip, the teammate who took my order was uninviting. She seemed new to the role, misunderstanding the basics (which would have been fine if her demeanor was more favorable), but her welcome didn't exactly leave a winning impressions. Anyways, oat milk cortado- fine...just fine. Avocado toast add feta- fine...just fine (it comes with a salad though which is a nice touch). Nutella pie, warmed-fine...just fine. Service-(again) fine...just fine. The hanuta ...well that one was good. Additionally, the devil is in the details, and there were a few details that could use improvement- outlets for study on tables beyond the back wall, WiFi code in a convenient location to be viewed from all tables once people sit down, team members bringing you silverware when they bring you a plate requiring utensils. It's just little things I guess, hospitality and convenience but with the Heights coffee game, those things matter. There are a million coffee options on or near 19th street. Irregardless, I wish them well, and based on the company during my stay, I may be the outlier here. Looks like they have some raving fans :).

J J.

Yelp
Good spot for a 'get together' with friends. They have coffee and food. Parking lot is a bit tight on the weekend but there's street parking. Plenty of seating inside. Coffee was ok. A little too much milk in the iced latte so couldn't really taste the coffee. Platter was pretty good though.
google avatar

Marina H.

Yelp
I visited here on a weekday morning and while I wasn't the only one here, the service was still friendly and quick. The space is open and airy and there is outdoor seating. This coffeeshop has Greek theming and I was instantly transported back to a past vacation to Greece. From the Greek coffee offerings to the subtle Greek decor, I will be returning when I want to mentally drift back to a Greek island. They do serve beer, wine, and food, but I did not peruse those menus. I ordered a iced coconut milk latte with an extra shot. Typically, the lattes have two shots. Adding a third created the perfect ratio of milk to espresso for me, as two wouldn't have quite been enough. My drink was delicious and I will be returning.

Yelp
Very cool coffee shop with great coffee and food. The staff are friendly and pleasant with a chill vibe and plenty of room.

Yelp
Best coffee, best food and the service is very good. The workers deal with customers very well, and the café is in a beautiful and quiet place

Yelp
Super cute neighborhood cafe, with great drinks and food. There's a lovely patio area and the interior is equally nice. Very clean and spacious. Great place for a bite or just to hang out. I saw a number of people with their laptops getting some work/studying done. They don't play their music very loud which is nice - great ambience to talk with friends or read or study/do work. I had a cold brew and the avocado toast, both very good. The avocado toast was a very good portion size and filling. They also serve beer and wine. They're open early until midnight every day which is nice. We live just a few minutes away so will definitely be back on the regular.
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
Maxing spot to have a cold brea and breakfast. Fabulous outside seating under a pergola and inside seating. Coffee is super smooth and the cold brew is excellent. All types of breakfast items and sweets to enjoy if that is your thing. The place is hopping but still it seems there are plenty of seats and tables to enjoy your moment with caffeine. Take your number and sit outside for your delicious items to arrive. This is my first time here and I am definitely making this a come to place when I visit Houston.
google avatar

Conner S.

Yelp
Popped in yesterday morning to get a coffee & get some work knocked out. Really large space with plenty of seating & plugs. Tons of food & drink options. At 1st I was like wow that was pricy but it ended up being delicious & tons of food. The latte, danish, and customized omelette were superb.
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
THE CUTEST COFFEE SHOP IN H-TOWN * * * We got their dulce de leche lattes and ermeigoodnessgracious, they had me. I'm so excited to come back to try their maple cinnamon or LAVENDAR seasonal lattes!
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Affordable and hip neighborhood coffee spot in the Heights. Interior and exterior tables and study spaces and your standard coffee selection that's decently priced for the Heights. Interior is hip but not overdone like Lalaland. The latte's are honestly way too sweet and you need to dial back the sugar level. Nitro cold brew was a good pick. Parking is available pretty easily in their lot.
google avatar

Helen Joy L.

Yelp
Place is super clean and all the staff are friendly. All the customers seem very happy too. Shared some breakfast and pastries with a friend and every item we ordered was good. Coffee was amazing and I'd definitely come back when I'm in the area. The only minor inconvenience is parking, which isn't even their fault because people can't even find parking at their own home in the heights area, let alone at a popular coffee shop!
google avatar

Dimitri S.

Yelp
Great food and service! The owner is very nice and brings a European atmosphere to the place!
google avatar

Adaelisa M.

Yelp
Good coffee and pastries and a relaxed vibe. Sat in the patio in the fall which was nice also.

Trisha T.

Yelp
The "pepperoni flatbread" was an immense disappointment. I enjoy simple, homemade-esque café food, which is the vibe here, but this was worse than what a college student running late to class would throw together. It's made on pita, which provides a great base, cut into four slices. Each slice has an awkward piece of tomato next to a single pepperoni. Four pepperoni on an entire flatbread is beyond subpar for a "pepperoni flatbread". I asked if that's how they typically make it, and they said that's their standard. I think they need to set their standard higher on this dish. Easy fix to improve the quality of the dish and the diner's experience - dice the tomatoes and double the pepperoni. If dicing is too much prep, keep the tomato sliced and layer the two.

Gisselle R.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with the strawberry matcha latte and the Nutella pie is to die for not too sweet just perfect!! I love this place I definitely recommend

Yelp
It was a little after 6:00 AM when I pulled out of the hotel parking garage I had already decided to pass on the hotel brew and I wanted to find something different which meant I'd have to pass on the national brands that I choose out of convenience most days. The Heights is an area that I'm somewhat familiar with being I've been traveling to the area on business for more than a decade but I never really went out of my comfort zone when it came to grabbing that first cup of morning coffee. After spending a few minutes searching YELP I landed here at Roast & Brew, now I admit it wasn't completely by happenstance, I came across a review from a very trustworthy source, a very good friend and fellow Yelper Sara I. and after reading her beautifully crafted review I made the short drive. I arrived a few minutes after their 6:30 AM opening and found there were already a few customers sipping on their favorites. I was greeted by a member of the staff with a good morning and how may I help you and a welcoming smile - I usually keep it pretty simple so I ordered a non fat no foam latte, as he started it I shopped the pastry case and menu board for something tasty. I think Sara's review may have guided me to the blueberry muffin "tender and fresh, slightly sweet" was exactly what I was craving and definitely the perfect pairing with my piping hot latte. I grabbed a two top next to the large plate glass window and enjoyed every sip and every bite - what a wonderful start to the morning. The ambiance here at this hour was perfect, so quite and relaxing, this is a beautiful coffee shop, the mix of modern decor and the taste of passion that's brewed in every cup. I need to start more of my mornings this way...
