Roasting Plant Coffee Brings Javabot Coffee Shop to London | Eater London

"This transatlantic roaster and café operator has opened its first London site at 4 Borough High Street (between London Bridge and Borough Market) and is currently serving coffee that one drinker called “gimmicky as hell ... but actually pretty delicious.” The cashless, reportedly 500-seat venue centers on a proprietary “Javabot” system that shoots beans through plastic tubes—first unroasted to a roaster, then into storage tubes and finally into super‑automatic machines—so a traditional barista only serves the finished drink. The space leans into a craft, brewery-like aesthetic, promising speed of service, spectacle and extensive customisation, including letting customers pick blends from a list of roasted single‑origin beans. That blending feature, and the brand’s claim to rest beans “for no longer than 48 hours,” have drawn technical skepticism (variable solubility and extraction rates can make custom blends imbalanced, and very fresh roasting can taste metallic), while the company’s franchise model—expanded into cities such as Detroit, Minneapolis, Denver and San Francisco—has faced legal controversies, including a $9.5m lawsuit from a Detroit franchisee and earlier disputes over business loans. How commuters and local workers respond to this halfway-house between speciality and convenience remains to be seen." - James Hansen

Google
Good coffee that paired perfectly with their banana bread, which was kindly warmed up for serving. They also have a few options for hot meals, and the staff were genuinely kind and welcoming. Loved watching the beans travel through the tubes and get roasted on the spot, a fascinating touch that adds to the whole experience. Stone's throw away from Borough market, a spot to relax after a bit of walking around.

What lovely, friendly staff! And I loved being able to try the different coffee blends, to then be able to choose the one I want in my drink! I've never been able to 'coffee taste' before and the staff were so helpful and generous! I will definitely come back when I'm next in London! WOW! Coffee -heaven for a coffee-lover :)

Came late in the afternoon for a quick coffee before and event at 6pm. Order a flat white and a complimentary glass of water lovely service you get to choose your beans from a menu never seen that before. Came quick as a flash and the coffee was lovely. The only slight aspect which for me makes it a 4 out of five rather than a 5 out of 5 was that it was a little on the cool side. I know this is a thing with coffee houses but I like my flat white nice and hot.

While waiting for our time slot to tour the Tower of London we decided to grab a quick bite and coffee for breakfast. The RPC off Gracechurch was clean, and staff friendly, and the food and drink tasty. I ordered a flat white, and I was pleasantly surprised with the taste. The latte art was a bit sloppy, but the drink itself was very good. I tried a couple pastries, and the chocolate chip banana bread was nice, but a little dry. The almond croissant is rarely my go-to, but I actually enjoyed the flavor very much. Whether you're wanting a place to recharge or you want an on the go coffee breakfast, Roasting Plant Coffee is worth checking out. Cheers!!

Google
Great place for coffee lovers, you can see the coffee beans traveling from the grinders to the coffee machine. The staff is super friendly, and even though it was full of people it was not a loud coffee shop. Chill ambiance. First time here and we will 100% be back🤍

Google
Loved the coffee here! The aroma hits you as soon as you walk in. The staff were super friendly and the beans tasted really fresh. Definitely one of the best spots in London for a good cup!

I think it’s about time I left a review. For the past four years, our engineering team has been coming here almost every day for our morning coffee club. Right after our daily stand up, we head downstairs and over to the adjacent building, Roasting Plant Coffee. A lot has changed over the years, but one thing has remained constant, the coffee. We’ve tried nearly every bean and drink combination/variation on the menu, and our favourite is the Sumatran beans. It might seem strange since it's not a bakery, but they serve the best croissants. I have no idea where they come from or who makes them, but they’re incredibly buttery and flaky, just smelling them gives me a high. The cheese and tomato, salmon and cream cheese, and plain croissants are all good (avoid the ham ones, for obvious reasons :)) And the best part is the people. Even in brief interactions, they’ve always been kind and welcoming. Thank you for making our mornings awesome.

Google
I visited Roasting Plant Coffee at London Bridge today and had a great experience. I ordered an iced matcha latte along with a croissant and focaccia — everything was absolutely delicious! The food was fresh and flavorful, and the drink was smooth and refreshing. I’d especially like to mention the barista, Sajia, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. Her friendly attitude really made my visit even better. Highly recommend this place if you’re in the area!🥰

Yelp
Nice place to stop by for coffee that has seating after walking around Borough Market. Wanted to grab a coffee by Monmouth but it was packed in there and no seating. Roasting plant is cool, you see beans and tubes around you. Not sure if its for decor or actually functional in terms of beans getting sent to get roasted that way. Ordering coffee, you get to choose which beans you want. There is a sign to describe the profile of each type of bean. We ordered a flat white and a large latte. Coffees tasted ok, nothing super special, but did the job of fighting off jet lag.

Yelp
Dropped by while looking for a quick cup of coffee. We were surprised by how cool the place is. Fresh coffee is being roasted every minute. The coffee itself was fantastic. Pastries were good too. The customer service was outstanding. Will definitely return.

Yelp
This place is absolutely fantastic. We got in the habit of stopping every morning on the way to work while visiting London because of the great coffee and huge, delicious pastries. The staff are attentive and quick. The location is really nice if you're walking across London Bridge. So cool to watch the coffee bean conveyers as they grind and freshly brew your coffee! In addition to really good coffee, they have some really good pastries; our favorite was the almond pastry which we split due to sheer size. So good! We'll be going back before we leave to get some coffee beans to bring back. Definitely try this place if you're in the area!

Yelp
Roasting Plant had a super cute environment to grab coffee and chat with friends of to sit down and do some work. They were fast and friendly, too. The coffee was alright - nothing extraordinary but also not bad. It's a great place if you need a grab and go or an escape from the busy streets!

Yelp
Excellent stop for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or a croissant. Freshly roasted coffee beans make for a fantastic cup of coffee! Excellent and expedient service with spacious seating. Worth a stop!

Yelp
one of my favorite cafes in london to sit down and work or talk. there are people chatting so its definitely not a library, but nothing disruptive either. the lattes are well made and there are many roasts to choose from, i usually just get the house blend. however, even for in house coffee they don't use mugs and instead use the recyclable paper cups with a cute design.

Yelp
Flat white and food is good. Staff is NOT friendly. They seem annoyed by questions. Ambience is very nice. Try? Don't try? Your choice.

Yelp
I came here a few months ago. You can choose from a bunch of different beans for the espresso which is nice because in the US I rarely know what I'm about to drink and don't get the choice. The barrista was very helpful describing the different notes of the coffee since I wasn't sure what I liked/wanted and the final espresso product was soooo good. It was just what I was looking for and I'm still thinking about it months later because of how good it was. I wish there was a place like this in my corner of the earth!!

Yelp
Popped in here to dodge the rain and rest my feet. Enjoyed a glass (no sure why they have glasses instead of mugs) of cafe latte with coconut+rice milk. The beans get shot over to the grinder for your cup of coffee you order. Pretty neat.

Yelp
Fancy setup with on site roasting and on order grinding, but coffee is mediocre and staff disorganized

Yelp
Very good coffee spot just at the end of London Bridge. I had a very good filtered coffee which was fairly priced considering the location (£3 for a medium). Quick and friendly service.

Yelp
Nice latte. I went with what was recommended to me. They aim to be cash free so make sure you have your card. Nice proximity to London Bridge.

Yelp
Lovely place, barista was welcoming and polite. You can choose what type of coffee bean from about 9 different beans and when they start to make your coffee the beans come through a tube from the other side of the room. Fantastic coffee shop, happy staff and great watching the beans flow above your head.

Yelp
My dad and I went to London for the very first time and we stopped here the first day we arrived. We are from Detroit, MI and there is a Roasting Plant here. We were immediately greeted by Brandon, a tall and outgoing guy who seemed genuinely happy to see us. He helped us select the best coffee beans for our respective drinks and was super polite and friendly with a good sense of humor. He gave us a slice of chocolate cake and two free drink cards. Even without the free merch, we would've gladly came back and we did. The location is right in the midst of the happenings, near the London Eye, London Bridge, and Borough Market and the ambience inside is peaceful and has a cool futuristic vibe. Brandon was awesome and made our journey into new waters truly a delight. We will always look back fondly on London and how nice everyone was--especially Brandon at Roasting Plant Coffee!

Yelp
Meh. Too expensive and the coffee is not that great. Nice gimmick with the coffee beans but you are paying for it. At this price point they should be able to get the orders right. It's irritating when they can't get it right. Try The Gentleman Barrista. A couple of minutes away.

Dan E.

Yelp
Great coffee and amazing fresh bean system. You get to choose the beans you want for your coffee drink. Our barrista was super kind and helpful.

Yelp
Amazing - loved my flat white and custard pastry is the best ever! Must visit. Great Vibe!
