Roasting Plant, the Willy Wonka of Coffee Shops, Opens First D.C. Location - Eater DC

"NYC-born Roasting Plant Coffee opens its thirteenth store — and first in D.C. — in Dupont Circle (1211 Connecticut Avenue NW) on Wednesday, October 11. Fueled on giant test tubes full of aromatic, freshly roasted coffee beans, it’s safe to say Roasting Plant is unlike any other cafe in the city." - Kalina Newman

Google
Another great cup of DC coffee. We have been to an extension of this place inside of Whole Foods in palm beach. You get to select your beans and have a perfectly crafted cup of coffee! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and clean bathrooms. This is unlike most of the other chain coffee cafes and provides a unique experience.

I had an americano and an almond croissant here. Both the coffee and the almond croissant tasted really good. Also they freshly roast the coffee beans daily inside the premises, which contributes towards a better quality and tastier coffee. The filling inside the almond croissant was yummy. The outlet as well as the washroom was clean and tidy. I visited in the morning and the caffe seemed popular among the office goers of the surrounding area.

Fun to watch the JavaBot roast beans and funnel it around. Try the flight if you're interested in multiple flavors + complimentary chocolate.

Best mocha I’ve had in my life. EZ recommended the Guatemalan beans and it was absolutely the correct choice. I went back with a coworker later that day for a second one. Proper chocolate croissants and fresh sandwiches.

Google
They have absolutely great coffee and the experience with it makes it even better! The staffs there were super friendly and knowledgeable! Love that we can see that progress instantly and in person! They are doing a promotion is to buy 1 lbs coffee bean and get a free coffee ( Drip coffee only! We loved the Peru one;)

Google
Average latte, we asked for a 12 oz and got an 8 oz cup (I didn't point it out to give them a chance to fix it). Atmosphere is good with high ceilings and you can sit here working for some time. I figure it's very busy during the week, but not super packed during the weekends. I'll skip next time.

Google
An amazing and unique coffee shop in DC. They have fresh unroasted coffee beans. The beans float through the tubs into the machine. They have beans from around the globe. The service was amazing. The staff explained everything about the beans where they came from, the flavor and what is their favorite coffee. A very nice and relaxing atmosphere.

Google
This is hands down the best coffee shop I have been too! Ez took his time and explained all the different coffees and gave expert recommendations. Loved hanging out in here with my family. Wish I lived closer so I could visit every day!

Yelp
Excellent. Lattes are great and you can choose the bean you would like. Also they have really good baked goods. I would recommend the croissants. Any type!

Yelp
Coffee- love the concept of being able to choose your beans for your drinks and having them roast onsite. Makes for tons of different coffee options. They employees were good to recommend options! Food- what food? Everything was basically sold out and the option I chose that didn't have a "sold out" sticker was also sold out... I get hangry quick and this was not fun for me. After sitting down they forgot to make the sandwich I did order.. waited 10minutes thinking they were making stuff from scratch. No, it was frozen and they just needed to heat it up. They also ran out of plates, so they give me a cardboard box to eat out of. The shop itself is really cool and aesthetically pleasing. As a plant person, I love the monsteras all over. Come here for the coffee. Enjoy THAT experience

Yelp
So many options of beans to buy was really cool. They're inside is very futuristic and clean. They have a deal where if you buy coffee, beans, you get a free cup! Pretty cool way to taste what you just bought. Their menu has the coffee staples, but not much for flavors other than there are two seasonal options which are pretty pricey (or at least when I asked the employee for flavor options, he only listed those 2 and no other options or syrups lol). I got a Toasted Oat Chai which was delicious but extremely tiny for its $7 price tag. I wish the price matched the value better. Employees were kind and very helpful. They made our orders incredibly fast which I really appreciated. Plenty of seating and a great vibe to the restaurant. They keep water cups out as well which I thought was very hospitable

Yelp
I'm confused about all the positive reviews. I don't know if I went on the wrong day or ordered the wrong thing, but I just didn't care much for my visit. The guy at the register looked like he hated being there or he was falling asleep. The barista, on the other hand, was friendly. Unfortunately, his friendliness wasn't enough to make up for the lukewarm and overall unmemorable pumpkin latte. Needless to say, I don't plan on going back.

Yelp
Biggest regret was that I didn't take photos. I loved that I could order any roast as an iced coffee, I did the Peruvian blend and it was delicious. Plus they had a decent chocolate croissant which always scores bonus points in my book. Fast and easy coffee service.

Yelp
Good coffee! Nice looking pastries. The whurr of freshly roasted beans service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
ground beans used, multiple choices, but otherwise made without love and could improve on the ratios of flat white and latte.

Yelp
Solid coffee addition to the area, very cool mechanism inside for moving beans around through the tubes once you place your order. There are a number of options for beans with helpful flavor notes to customize your drinks. I've had a few drinks now and the baristas/espresso has been pretty good - on the more expensive side but pulled well. The pistachio latte is fun (made with pistachio milk), we've had them make some custom espresso seltzer/tonic drinks which have been decent, they serve sizes up to 20oz I think. Pastries are made by bluebird (check out pluma near union market). Friendly service on all visits

Yelp
Got a decaf medium latte with almond milk and sugar free hazelnut cafe. Unfortunately by sugar free they meant alternative sugar which i did not want and was not expecting. Also, its super expensive. The seating and cibe is great and you could sit here for hours and work but 7.37 for a medium coffee, I'll say no thank you for the next time.

Yelp
Great contender for best coffee in the area (along with my beloved TCB). Good selection of coffees along the spectrum, and you can get any hot or iced. Staff was extremely friendly - gave me a tour of their machine and dispensers - and also very knowledgeable about each coffee so they can make good recs. Their Jamaican Blue Mountain is outstanding. The Ethiopian is also well balanced. I will keep coming back and it's now one of two coffee places on my regular rotation.

Yelp
I walked by here on my way to dupont and decided to stop by and try some coffee. I thought the concept was really cool, the beans go through the tubes in the ceiling when you order. There's also about 5-6 tables and chairs and was a pretty quiet spot to work. The staff was very nice and helped me decide which kind of coffee bean to get. I ended up going with the Guatemala. I thought my latte was a little bit milky and sweet. I think next time I would come back to try a coffee instead and probably a stronger bean. Overall, the concept was cool. My latte wasn't great, but I would come back to try a different type of coffee bean.

Yelp
Coffee was good. Stopped here before going to the National Mall. BF got a coffee that was super charged - 20% more caffeine! Better than some coffee shops around town.

Yelp
First time trying them in dc and wow! From hearing how they have various options of extravagant coffee beans from across the globe, to seeing their machines transport them to the coffee machine from the ceiling, Roasting Plant is def a coffee shop to remember! The barista was super nice and friendly! Place was nice and clean, better for a grab & We got the iced SF vanilla latte w Brazilian beans and Lavender Latte with Peruvian beans! Both were tasty and strong to an exact level. The butter croissant was flaky and their fruit cup were filled with sweet fruits! Def check them out for good coffee and experience!

Yelp
Got the matcha lavender latte, berry banana smoothie, salmon toast, and ham and cheese sandwich. The food was so yummy and well priced. The smoothie was made on the spot and very good. I liked that they had great options aside from coffee. Jose was very helpful and kind and patient! The coffee did look good and I want to try it next. The beans are roasted fresh. The vibes are clean and nice. There are a few tables inside and outside!

Yelp
Good little coffee shop! The best part ended up being the egg & cheese muffin. You can tell it's made to order. It was honestly so good that I forgot to take a picture before eating it. My boyfriend got a large mocha latte w oat milk (~$8) and banana bread (~$3). I got a large vanilla latte (~$7) and an egg and cheese English muffin ($5.75). Banana bread was mid, the banana flavor is a little too subtle for me. Coffee was solidly good, but overall nothing special. Maybe should've tried one of their specialty drinks.

Yelp
They open the property at seven. Right away, they are very helpful with what to get and what would taste good. Not a huge food menu but enough to not be hungry if you work there.. I love the fact that it was quiet, the place was clean, and the coffee you can get is woman owned. The chocolate croissant is very tasty. Definitely will be back

Yelp
I walked past this place and it seemed super cool so I decided to go in and try their coffee. They roast their beans right there and there are so many choices. It was also cool how the beans were just transported around in the tubes. I got a balanced blend and there was also free oat milk which is a rare find. The staff was friendly and the coffee was fantastic. The price was great too since was not that expensive compared to most other shops in the area. This is easily one of the top coffee shops in the area. I want to go back and try more items off the menu and I hope they open up more locations around!

Yelp
I've come by here a couple of times for coffee on my way to work and the coffee and service is pretty solid. I'm not a coffee aficionado by any means so I couldn't tell you how good the coffee is compared to other coffee makers, but the coffee is made to order and seems cheaper than Starbucks.

Yelp
Super unique new coffee concept in Dupont! I love that you can choose the bean and that they list out the different flavor profiles, and you can even blend three different ones for the ultimate customizable experience - I definitely want to try out different options to really hone down my coffee preferences. I got a iced lavender latte and the barista recommended three different beans - I ended up getting the Mexico Bloom and it was perfect! The latte was just the right sweetness also. They have some tables that are perfect for working and some light pastries and sandwiches as well.

Yelp
I went to Roasting Plant hoping for a hot chocolate, sadly they were out of the chocolate they would normally use to make it. Instead I ordered a mocha shake which was very tasty. I was interested in the different types of beans and appreciated how we could pick certain beans depending on the flavor we wanted. The service was 5 stars. It was very clean and it is a welcoming environment if you want to sit and enjoy whatever you order. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is because they were out of hot chocolate, other than that 5/5.

Yelp
Cool concept. I got a maple cappuccino with oat milk using their Peru roast. I love that they give you options, but I'm not convinced that the taste benefits are that worth it. It's gimmicky in the sense that liquid nitrogen ice cream places were. However, the prices are pretty standard, and I appreciated their vegan to-go food options (granola bars, chia pudding). With so many coffee shops nearby, I'm not clear on what would keep this spot afloat, unless people suddenly become more discerning on taste.

Alex G.

Yelp
Loved the concept. Loved the coffee. Loved the staff. Great selection of different roasts to create seemingly endless variations. I could have fun with this every day. I usually cycle through a different comfort order every few months, but this place makes it fun to try something new every time. Beans are freshly ground when you order, and you can taste the difference. Lots of space to sit and work/study. I'm looking forward to visiting the Lower East Side location when I'm in the city!

Yelp
Loved everything!!! Staff was super friendly!! First time there and would love to go back. It was a little overwhelming at first- but the staff was patient and explained everything I can't wait to return. Good coffee!

Yelp
a really charming and clean cafe! my friend and I were walking around and stumbled upon this spot. we had to charge our phones and saw that they had a good amount of outlets and some extenders/small power plugs! the place wasn't too crowded but had a few people inside. there are only a few tables tho but we got a table as someone left when we were ordering. i got an iced lavender matcha latte which was good but not too impressive. it was also quite overpriced imo (~$7 after tip+tax) for the 12 oz (shown in pic). the matcha flavor wasn't too strong and the drink was mostly ice, which was a bummer my friend ordered a reg matcha latte but w oat milk and there was barely a matcha flavor at all! the oat milk definitely overpowered it so that's all it tasted like. the workers are friendly and the place isn't overwhelmingly hectic - good for having convos and chilling! I'm a fan of the atmosphere and available outlets but not too fond of the drinks (matcha ones at least)

Mara S.

Yelp
Never been to this location - only the new one on 19th st. Coffee is fantastic!! Such good beans, love the ability to pick my own. I also enjoy being able to smell the 10 or so varieties on display and partake in yummy pastries! Again, coffee is the star here, even normal coffee, and the machines inside used to roast are pretty cool. A little expensive, but yum yum yum.

Grace F.

Yelp
I like that u can choose your beans but the latte itself was a bit watery and milky. Wish it was stronger but service was lovely!

M B.

Yelp
Easily the best coffee I've had in DC. Truly freshly roasted and rich flavor. Strongly recommend the Peruvian blend.

Kay B.

Yelp
I rarely write reviews, but dear owner: Double whatever the staff is being paid because they are amazing. Such a great greeting when customers walk in, coffee samples, checking in on customers AFTER payment is complete...5/5. Happy to give the staff their flowers while I'm still sitting here (and before I forget!)

Marie S.

Yelp
Been here a few times. The coffee is pretty good and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The decor is simple and chic which gives the shop a nice, chill atmosphere. It just opened a few weeks ago and so far, it's going to be my go to place. The prices are not bad compared to Starbucks. I highly recommend if you want to a great cup of coffee, this is a really good place.
