The Best Wine Bars in San Francisco | Eater SF

"If you want a wine bar that’s not too “wine bar,” and feels more casual and fun, Robberbaron is the place to go. The wine menu skews toward European and California options, with fun descriptors to tempt visitors into ordering. (A recent gem: “Bad Bunny likes it.”)" - Dianne de Guzman

Such a gem! We came here on a Thursday night and stumbled into a comedy show. We loved that they had a multitude of options for wine, wine cocktails, and mocktails-so we stayed through the show and made new friends. It was a really enjoyable experience and we plan to come back soon, highly recommend!

Google
Best wine bar in the city! Amazing atmosphere and service, truly enjoy our evenings here. Great for everything from sharing a bottle of wine with friends to watching the game to a solid beet offering. A bonus that it’s dog-friendly! An SF treasure for sure.

Google
I cannot review this place highly enough. It is perfection. Their cocktail list: perfection. Their proprietress: perfection. Decor: you guessed it, perfection. Give these people your business.

I've walked by here so many times and everyone I know loves it but I finally stopped by and totally get it! Its a great little spot that is super dog friendly and has a great selection of wines and some unique cocktails as well. The staff were also really nice and helpful if you had any questions! I can't wait to go back!

Had a great time here. Great drinks and helpful staff.

Google
Fantastic bar, great wine selection. Matt the bartender is the nicest, most attentive bartender you’ll ever have. The kind of place you want to be a “regular” at, and they make you feel like family. My favorite SF bar

Google
My favorite wine bar in the city! Beer and wine with light apps. Monday nights go between trivia night and full fledged group (whole bar!) singing. The staff prides themselves on service and ever since my second visit I'm usually greeted by name. The wine selection isn't huge, but doesn't need to be as they pick really good ones. Great for private parties as well.

Yelp
Incredibly friendly staff, unique drinks, and ample places to sit and catch up with friends. The website even lives up to their fun-loving and creative spark, boasting "enjoy a glass of some of the pimpiest wines and beers." It's true, so go give it a try if you haven't.

Yelp
we were hopping around polk street for a friends birthday, and stumbled across robberbaron. the interior is super cute which is what caught our eye- and they seemed to have enough room to accommodate our large group. upon arrival, we were greeted with big smiles from matt, and luc (the owner) quickly joined him. they made our cocktails VERY quickly. we all really enjoyed trying each others- they were all DELICIOUS- and have the most hilarious names. they also have an incredible beer and wine list. after closing our tabs, luc came out with a bottle of bubbly on the house for our birthday girl. we were all beyond impressed, thankful- and overall blown away. the overall kindness, hospitality, and great conversations with matt and luc truly helped make it a perfect night. we have already started chatting with them about future birthdays and events. amazing music, vibes, drinks employees- truly can't ask for more. we can't wait to come back soon!!!!

Yelp
Super cute, intimate wine bar with really friendly service. When I came by on a Friday evening, there was a live band playing outside and the vibes were excellent. Definitely a good place to stop by on Polk Street!

Yelp
While visiting a friend in the area, we decided to check out a couple local bars. RobberBaron popped up on the list and looked interesting, so we dropped in for a drink. The first thing we noticed was one of their drinks called "jennifer is dating a weird guy." This was hilarious to us, because my friend's name is "Jennifer." She took a picture of the menu and sent it to her fiance. He actually thought she might have photoshopped it, but he wasn't offended anyway because he considers himself her "ex" boyfriend as they're engaged. Lol. Regardless, she ended up getting a glass of wine. I tried the "better than aperol spritz." It was good, but not necessarily better than an aperol spritz, in my opinion. The music that was being played didn't match the bar or its patrons, so that threw us off a bit. There was also a big dog in the bar; I think it was a doodle (I can't remember). He was super cute and running around all over the place. Another girl came in with a dog, so it seems very open to pet owners. We ended up taking off in a hurry, because this lady by the window kept coughing and sneezing and we were paranoid.

Yelp
Absolutely love this bar. It's the perfect spot for a date, or to just grab a drink and relax. Great wine/beer and drinks, music (sometimes live music!), and various seating options (lounge/table/bar/patio). Most important of all; the people! The staff are amazing and a cornerstone of the neighborhood, so the patrons are almost always partially regulars and repeat guests. Whether you live in the area and want to build a community, or if you're passing through and want some local vibes, this place is perfect! Some nights are busier than others, but great times are always found here.

Yelp
I don't see anything wrong with being more transparent about your menu. When you have a part on your menu listed under "cocktails" (not low abv cocktails) and having the first ingredient of these cocktails listed as "tequila, vodka, gin" When it is in fact... not. And you're going to charge as if it IS a real cocktail? Shady marketing. When I realized they didn't have a full liquor license, I asked the bartender if people knew that and he said "usually people know it's a wine bar soooo." This was my first time here and it was extremely busy, I could barely even belly up to the bar. I had no clue and the menu made it seem like they did. After spending $14 on a fake cocktail at a busy bar with live music on a Saturday, I watched the owner yell at a group of people for not buying anything from her bar, while they were enjoying the live music... If you wanna be that bar... either don't host live music for a "free" mini bluegrass on Polk or charge a cover.

Yelp
Amazing customer service! Great ambiance and live music! Great drinks and great prices. Highly recommend if you are on Polk St! Will definitely stop by next time I'm in th

Yelp
Loved this place!! A quaint and delightful bar that serves only wine and beer. They have some great wines for a reasonable price (we got a bottle of Chianti for 52$). The wine was absolutely wonderful. Shared two bottles over the course of the evening along with their fantastic charcuterie plate. Along with the cheese and meat the plate had two types of crackers, bread, olives, nuts, mustard, and apples. Yum! The bartender was super nice and made some good recommendations for the night. Tip - you get 25% off your first wine glass when you check in :)
google avatar

Yelp
I was here for 30 min at 6pm on a Friday. They put out a spread of free (and delicious) snacks. Then a woman walked in off the street with a bouquet of flowers for the bartender who has once given her a bottle of wine. The bartender didn't remember doing it. Great neighborhood spot.

Yelp
If you like good vibes come here. Great wine, cocktails etc. wish I was hungry enough to try the sandos cause I'd probably like those too
google avatar

Heysoos R.

Yelp
Love this place. The music is always on point and the service is first class. The owner is super friendly and they make everyone feel welcome and right at home. One of our favorite neighborhood spots for a great beer or glass of wine.
google avatar

Yelp
RB is the bomb, "Luke" the owner is theeee coolest person you'll ever meet in SF and her new wine bar is popping! Live music, DJ's and other events all the time. Just check hours before you head over :)
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
My local San Francisco friend recommended this local spot to grab a cocktail. Cool little beer and wine bar. Nice ambiance for a chill date night or drinks with friends. The best part was the added touch of the slanted leg support underneath the bar. Wow! They thought of everything! The staff members were helpful with selecting cocktails and really friendly.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
The best wine bar in SF. Great unpretentious spot on Polk Street that is a total neighborhood gem. Solid wine and beer list, delicious bar bites, good tunes, a cozy bar and a nice parklet if you prefer outside. They also have the swankiest toilet in all of San Francisco. Support small local business and go see Luc and Matt. They'll take good care of you and make you feel at home! Also dog friendly if your dog isn't a jerk
google avatar

Yelp
Beers are good. Volume level is reasonable. I liked roberbarron on my Friday night visit because the crowd mix was fun, diverse, and minimally obnoxious. That may sound like a backhanded compliment - but its not. Because if there's zero obnoxiousness the venue quickly becomes boring, if there's too much - the venue is annoying. I think there's a fine line where it makes things fun but not annoying. this was the case on on the night of my visit.
google avatar

Courtney D.

Yelp
My sister and I loved this place! We came in for some pre-dinner drinks and found out they have free (yes FREE) cheese and charcuterie on Wednesdays. The drink menu also has some hilarious names for their champagne based cocktails, causing my boyfriend back at home to beg me to try "the volleyball scene from top gun" and my sister ordering the "fresh prince of bel-air". I would love to come back here if I lived in SF, it a actually hurts a little bit that this bar exists and I can't go to it every day
google avatar

Yelp
Love robberbaron!! It's my go to spot on Polk street. We moved to this neighborhood a couple years ago from SOMA and feel grateful to have found luc and robberbarron!Unpretentious, fun bar with a great selection of wines and beers!! No matter how you are feeling, you ll always feel better once you go RB! They bring live bands, DJs occasionally. Go check em out, you won't regret it!!

Sid V.

Yelp
Luke, you are amazing! My cousin and I were on our way to the cinch when we walked passed this bar. We said "alright lets stop for a fancy drink first". We had the pleasure of being bartended by Luke, they have such amazing energy and our drinks were bomb! I will absolutely come back just to see Luke and I will tell everyone I know!

Yelp
Where to start. These assholes won't let my dog run about. It's almost as if they are an establishment. I guess while I'm coralling my dog they provide amazing service and an outstanding experience. 10/10 will recommend. No really these people are the best and you want them in your neighborhood
google avatar

Connie M.

Yelp
This is a classy establishment located along the fratastic street that is Polk. I'm not a huge fan of bars along Polk because they get overly crowded and full of young clad spring chickens. Maybe I'm just an old fart who likes some peaceful atmosphere at the end of my days. Stumbled on robberbaron because it had seats left and the crowd seemed calm. It's totally a gem along Polk! They have a good selection of red (I'm so old I know) and really nice bartenders. I'm definitely paying them a visit again when I feel the urge to booze!
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
Some of the reviews on here I am seriously rolling my eyes at. "4 stars because they only have beer and wine". Hey, why don't you go take it up with the SF ABC and see if you can get them a full liquor licence? That's not a reason to take away a star. "The cheese and crackers ($5 is a red flag) is like the old Handi Snack". It LITERALLY says that's what it's supposed to be on the menu. You are complaining that it's TOO cheap? What the hell? $5 is awesome. I am starving after work but before dinner and not made of money. ANYWAY. Robberbaron is one of the best institutions in Russian Hill. Excellent selections of wine. I love their champagne cocktails with hilarious names like "the volleyball scene from top gun". Their owner is involved with the community, has a funny Instagram and always fun to chat with. Plus, FREE pizza and cheese/charcuterie/snacks on certain nights.
google avatar

Yelp
Robberbaron is proof that Polk St. has some class. This is not your usual pick up scene/raging heffers/overrun with B&T crowd/etc. etc. It is a NICE neighborhood bar where you can have a fun, decent, adult conversation with your girlfriend or take your date to before having dinner at Lord Stanley across the street. There are a lot of interesting wine choices on their menu that are fairly priced, but my gf and I both got the Mother of Dragons champagne cocktail: rose, elderflower with a lemon twist. It's so easy to down this thing, you'll need to have at least two! I really loved that they named this after Daenerys of Game of Thrones (the series of which I am so hooked onto right now!) If you think this place is too quiet for you, take your loud annoying self to Rouge on the corner. Robberbaron likes to #keepitklassy.

Yelp
My best friend and I were looking for our final night cap on our last night in SF. We were walking back to our hotel room when we heard amazing music coming from this bar. It instantly got our attention! We came in and we're greeted by Luc and Matt. Great atmosphere and ambience. Not overly crowded and extremely comfortable. This place had amazing energy! We will definitely be back on our next trip. Thank you for making it such a memorable experience Luc and Matt.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this wine bar on a late Saturday afternoon with a group that had been drinking since brunch. We sat in the front table, overlooking the busy action on Polk street. The people watching was fabulous with the open concept windows and busy weekend vibes. The bar itself wasn't too busy but that meant we had the bartenders to ourselves. Such classy fellows with great service and hospitality. Someone in our group picked up the tab so I never even saw menu prices or options but we drank a Sangiovese red wine and both a sparking and flat rose. Overall great vibes and my absolute favorite part was the cute little bathroom in the back--where do I get my hands on one of those fancy black and white patterned toilets. Will be back to show this place off to my family when they visit
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
The only reason this place doesn't have five stars is because the $5 (first red flag) cheese and crackers plate is no joke that cheese and cracker (see image) snack you'd get as kids. The cheese even tastes and looks the exact same. You even get a silver spread knife that's supposed to be the red stick. Otherwise great wine selection, ambiance and friendly staff.
google avatar

Ross S.

Yelp
Overall I was very happy with my experience here. The staff was extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is great for a laid back night or date. I came here with a couple friends on a Friday and there was still space for us to sit, chat, and split a bottle of wine. For SF this price point is decent, not a steal, but not bad either. There are several wine bars on polk to choose from, but this should be at the top of the list.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cute wine and beer bar in Nob Hill. Again, just an FYI: they only serve *wine and beer.* My friends and I recently stopped in not knowing this (cocktails were on our minds), but luckily, we're a flexible bunch. We went in on a Tuesday night. It was relatively quiet sans four other patrons (two of them appearing to be on a date), but it was a Tuesday after all. To me, the general vibe I was: relaxed neighborhood bar. The bartender seemed to have a good rapport with the customers. He was pretty friendly and explained the intriguing art on the walls (which were for sale). If I can correctly recall, each painting was akin to a modern "still life." I had a nice, crisp Chablis. One of my friends had a glass of Cabernet, while my other friend had a local beer. All of us enjoyed our beverages, the ambiance, and also, the ease (and almost-luxury) of a bar not consumed with a ton of noise, crowds, and had ample seating. I'd definitely swing by again if I'm in the neighborhood.

B S.

Yelp
Servers were absolutely lovely. Choripan was what caught our attention--smelled it walking by one evening and came back soon after to try it. Chorizo + chimichurry on a mini-baguette with house chips and a pickle. For $10? Totally worth it. Will need to go back when I'm hungrier! Just keep an eye on their hours-- not open every day.

Yelp
This place keeps getting better and the service is wonderful. Thank you Robberbaron for the great food and wine!! Monday's they are so generous to offer complimentary fresh cheese pizza. Wednesday's they offer this buffet of beautiful food that is also complimentary, a bit elaborate and way too kind of them. Probably the best cheese plate in San Francisco next to Gary Danko's. They really need to raise their prices, they keep it real and we love you guys!
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
robberbaron has kept the best elements of Black Sheep (the bar before) and upped it to another level. A wider selection of wine and beer + some champagne cocktails, pizza Mondays, and the new vivavcious owner of the place who is reason enough to come visit. There is a very unique SF feel to the place. It's the SF I arrived to almost a decade ago and the one that I sometimes miss. An open and accepting space for all to relax while being decidedly understated and unpretentious. You come in here for good drinks and good conversations. Patrons are respectful of each other. Just don't be a douche. Good times to be had by all. And coming back to the new owner. She is a BIG warriors fan and gets really animated during games. But her affable charm and genuine desire to make sure you have a great time ensure you most certainly will.
google avatar

Lyn C.

Yelp
This is a super cute neighborhood spot. I am unsure about the vibe, but I like it. There's swanky decor, old school top 40s playing, and the bartenders and crowd are not pretentious. I really enjoyed the service, Charcuterie Wednesdays, and GOT drinks on the menu (cool!!).
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Cute low key bar that gets busy past happy hour. I got here right when they opened and was one of be first people there. There were some comfy sofas already reserved and friendly bartenders. I found street parking right across the street. They do not have an actual happy hour but they have a special where you can get a free item from the charcuterie options if you purchase a bottle. I came here with a new friend to celebrate her getting a job and just went for cocktails instead. I got the mother of dragons and it was delicious. I would definitely come back here as it was packed by the time I left on Thursday night.
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
Awesome, unpretentious gem of a wine bar! It's all black and unmarked on the outside. Once inside, you're welcomed by a comfy padded bar, some tables, and comfy window seating. The best part besides the drinks? The Mirror! Perfect for people watching and making fun of people without them knowing. Great music selection too. Really was feeling the 90s hip hop. Tons of tasty wines to choose from, top notch craft beers, and good cocktails. The owner Luke is A+ and treats her patrons well. There's free food during the week too. My sister was drinking an IPA and she opened up a bottle of Blind Pig IPA for us to try FOR FREE. Such a top notch spot. Great for a girls night, date, solo drink, pregame or actually whatever you want- do you really need an excuse to wine?
google avatar

Walter C.

Yelp
Outstanding That's how I would describe Robberbaron in one word. The owner and staff pay attention to every detail. Their service is phenomenal. Keep it classy, stop by for a glass of wine or beer. No cocktails here, however they have Noble Drinks... Don't know what that is? Stop by and ask! Here you'll find the most interesting woman in the world, Luke Now go drink like you're from House Martell [add wine emoji here] Mondays - pizza nights Wednesdays - charcuterie nights
google avatar

Bauble C.

Yelp
Went to this place for the 1st time and it was amazing! Luke (owner/bartender) is funny and will go out of the way to make you laugh. There are not many bars in SF where strangers will actually chat with each other, everyone in the place was friendly. The wine selection is good and priced reasonably. If you like cabs, have the French Bordeaux. I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in the city! It's super clean and nicely decorated. The bartenders are really nice and the specialty drinks are very good, one of the bartenders even checked up on my drink and offered to make a new one if I didn't like it. Loved that my group didn't have to yell over each other the whole time we were there. Overall, it's a pretty small and intimate space but it's not overly crowded like other places I've been. I had the fun GoT themed champagne drinks: Mother of Dragons and Blood of My Blood - liked them both!
google avatar

Roman S.

Yelp
Small bar convenient located on Broadway and Polk. I used to come here years ago before "The Wine Bar" closed its doors. Despite minor changes the bar has not changed much; the bartenders are very friendly and fast to make drinks. They are thrifty though; I have noticed that the amount of liquor poured in each drink is anything but generous. I think my five year old nephew could drink three or four Long Islands and remain 100% sober. Not the best way to encourage clients to come back.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
Gracious staff, lovely ambiance and an excellent happy hour. It's my favorite wine bar on Polk !
google avatar

Priya S.

Yelp
Very cute and quaint neighborhood wine bar tucked in the heart of Polk St. I went to catch up with a friend at Robberbaron a few days ago and we both agreed that it makes the perfect first date spot - the ambiance has a rustic and intimate charm, the bartender is so friendly and inviting, the two seater tables are so cute and above all, you can actually hear everything that your counterpart is saying. The vibe is definitely more quiet and laid back than a really loud divey setting. The wine selection isn't vast but it's perfect. I had the prosecco and my friend had the chardonnay and they were both crisp and absolutely delicious. The ~$13 price tag per glass is more than worth it. They have a small bites menu as well but we'd already eaten dinner beforehand. So if you're looking for a new cute date spot or you're in the neighborhood and want to head to a quieter, more quaint wine bar, Robberbaron is for you! Happy Drinking, Yelpers!
google avatar

Yolanda F.

Yelp
This quaint, friendly, happy, fun little place is a few blocks from my house. I've walked by it for awhile and have never made it in to check-it-out. What a gem! I love the owner, the bartender, the vibe, the wine, the food... You get the point! It's my new haunt and I'm thrilled to have found my tribe.
google avatar

Timoteo K.

Yelp
This place is awesome ! Old time charm with great service and delicious bites and, of course , great wines. Sit in the front and ppl watch as you sip a French wine and nibble on cheese and salumi.

Ash S.

Yelp
Typical SF bar - Pretentious bartender - check Ridiculous wine prices - check Extremely small servings - check Obnoxiously loud customers who can't be bothered to tone they're voice down, and the bartender doesn't care either - check and check

Yelp
My bf and I stumbled across this place as tourists looking for California wine. The friendly bartender, Luke, made some great recommendations for both reds (for the bf) and whites (for myself). There was a great variety and we both loved what we ordered. The ambience of the place was really laid back, not too bright, not too dark, music was the perfect volume and everyone in the place seemed generally happy to be there, as were we.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Perfect spot. Gracious staff that are both knowledgeable and super chill. Luc has really made this an A+ addition to the neighborhood. See you soon!
google avatar

Samuel D.

Yelp
A hybrid of comfort, sophistication and excellent service, robberbaron has stolen my heart to what's essential in a local watering hole ;) Only a few minutes away and I can count on settling in a relaxed and comfortable vibe founded on good people who own and staff this excellent establishment, i.e. Luke, Matt and Kahele. The little vittles are generous in taste and perfect accompaniments with the drinks. The beer and wine selections are quite good, and the cocktails are wonderfully crafted and classy. Ask for the one with burnt orange, it's balanced with just the right amount of smoky flavor.
google avatar

Sepi N.

Yelp
One of my all time fav Wine Bars in SF!!! The Happy Hour starts early around 5pm .... arrive early to snag a seat. Their wine & beer choices are great, I always try to get something new. Super cute date spot (especially for blind dates!) Luc and team are amazing and super friendly, love coming here any day of the week. Everyone knows each other or get introduced by someone- it is the perfect neighborhood bar (I live a few blocks from the bar). They do have special events as well : Wine tastings, Beer tastings and a few other ....
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
So far...great! Stopped in on a Wednesday evening, busy but not overly packed (which I prefer). Great wine selections, you can tell the folks here care about what wine they are providing. It was also a special night (might happen once/week) where they offer complimentary charcuterie to the patrons. Would definitely go back :)

Yelp
I've been in before, a few times, for the delicious wine. I've also sampled some of the appetizers and always had a great time. Everything is delicious and the place itself is gorgeous. Recently my lady and I decided to get married and I've been trying to arrange some kind of reception afterward because you can only take a few people to a City Hall ceremony. I'd almost given up on the idea and resigned myself to having friends buy us a PBR at our local queer bar, as the GF suggested. And I really do not like PBR. But our budget is tight and once you use the word, "wedding" costs just skyrocket. I began to despair of finding a place to gather a somewhat large group, then a coworker asked if I'd checked in with Luc. I had forgotten to check and robberbaron is just up the street from me! When I shot off an email to the owner about bringing some folks through, the response was near instant and totally enthusiastic and willing to work with us on making it happen. I cannot possibly recommend the place with more enthusiasm. TY so much for being soo accommodating and helpful, I can't wait to drink some more delicious wines and celebrate with my love at robberbaron.

Yelp
Yes way Rosé. Came here for a quick glass while waiting for dinner reservations at Frascati . I loved the vibe from the short time spent there. Wine choices were of course fantastic. It was a Friday so quite busy as expected. I'd love to come back for a HH and spend more time. Sat on the tables against the wall but everyone at the bar seemed extremely friendly, always a huge plus in my book. And the cherry top.. they were playing the Giants game and had a few other games playing as well! Doesn't get any better than that ! Ps. If you're searching for a good date spot , this is it, look no further !!
