"Credited by many with introducing french fries into the burrito in the 1980s, this famous taco shop helped popularize the California Burrito—a local staple that combines carne asada, cheese, salsa, guacamole, and fries into a uniquely San Diego creation." - Vox Creative

I wish I would’ve come to this place sooner. We deep into this terrible political climate and inflation. However this place still has generous proportions! The food was amazing. Flavor perfect. Definitely coming back more often.

Google
California burrito with guac and chips. The guac and chips were served like if you ordered nachos which was surprising to me but still good.

Google
Hands down absolutely best burritos in San Diego. I come here a few times a month and the walk up counter is perfect. Everyone is so nice too. Great nighttime burrito .

I’ve been coming to Roberto‘s for longer than most of you have been alive. So last Thursday night, it was very busy and I did a drive-through order, Carne Asada burrito and the side of carrots, paid for it got home looked in the bag and I got someone else’s order … which might’ve been not too bad … except it was three roll tacos, drenched in extra sour cream, not my thing. So five days later, I got a chance to come back and I had to call and talk to Jessica who’s is the customer service person …. anyhow, I’m getting my burrito and carrots … nice place, nice people, highly recommended. Note: walk up window orders, no inside dining, outside tables or drive through.

Having pollo asada(chicken) quesedulles is the best thing in the night. Right across the fraternity and the sdsu junction means traffic signal. They have a large vegetarian option and a non vegetarian option. Haven't spotted my place where i sit and have burrito with another person. But on special days yeah they do come for it and sit on my seat. Love the ambience. Very tasty. Yummy food. They hardly speak english. The kitchen guys. Take care.

Google
Hello, today I came in with my family to get some carne asada fries. The first order of carne asada fries was under cooked and the second order wasn’t cooked well done as asked. Also, customer service from the woman taking the order was awful. Was very rude. I even tipped which I shouldn’t have considering the service was awful. It was to late tho. I had already paid

Google
I ordered 2 beef taco combination plate. I get to the window and the lady has 2 orders of the same thing and states my bill is 27$. I asked why is my order 27$? She stated you ordered 2 orders. I said no, I said 2 beef taco combination plate. There are several options of variations on the menu such as 1beef taco, and 1 enchilada within a combination. Apoarently it wasnt clear enough and she was argumentative with me about it. I drove off to the taco shop down the street because im not dealing with that bs after an 18 hour shift as a nurse on a holiday. Apparently she doesn't know how to do math. That's what you get with uneducated people. Never coming back here. Please go find another place where staff isn't rude or trying to steal money. There are 2 other taco shops that are better nearby.

Yelp
Machacha burrito to start the day. Healthy portion of shredded beef, eggs mixed in, with onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers. A little drippy from all that sauwce, get a napkin. Hot sauce looked a lot tomatoes base but compliments well.
google avatar

Alicia T.

Yelp
A bit salty but tasty nonetheless. Ordered rolled tacos and they were so hot I couldn't eat them on the way home as intended.
google avatar

Yelp
Such good food for an even better price. I love mexican food and this place surpassed all my expectations. I got two carnitas tacos and oh my gosh--they were incredible and big!! Normally I feel like three tacos is a safe bet, but these made two look just right. They man working the front was incredibly kind and very helpful with my gluten allergy. So happy I found this place on my walk!!

Yelp
Sure, this is just a taco stand, but they do the job right! There are days when you just crave a big greasy Carne Asada burrito with guacamole and this is the place to get it. They never disappoint.

Gloria G.

Yelp
The food is always good and they sometimes will do something custom or add something if you ask. The cashier is always fast and friendly and is also patient if you're still thinking about what to order. I've only ever ordered through drive thru so the ambience for the taco shop is just sitting outside of it since there's no dine-in, but otherwise it's a good taco shop. It is a bit pricey, but it's usually worth it.
google avatar

Abel T.

Yelp
Came in to grab a carne asada burrito this Roberto's location didn't disappoint . I'll be honest Roberto's taco shop never has consistency on their food or location . In my personal experience this one maybe the only location that does .It's sad too because at one point they were the best taco shop EVER . Service was good at this location tables were clean .

Daniel P.

Yelp
Been coming here for 7 years and as of recently the quality and portions have gone down and now they even ask for Tips ? For what ? Paid 13 dollars for a Carne Asada burrito , salty , guacamole is super watery and usually the portions are decent but this one was just a wimpy burrito , take your money elsewhere, taco bell across the street gives you a better bang for your buck
google avatar

Alexander V.

Yelp
The rude cashier tried to scam me even though she gave me the wrong order. They never give you receipts, and always in a bad mood! She messed up my food and when I went up to the counter she charged me $8 to fix her mistake. Yaqueline shouldn't work here, Ive been coming to this taco shop for almost 20 years and they always have an angry cashier ALWAYS!
google avatar

Ro N.

Yelp
The service is what fastfood service is, I ordered carne asada burrito and carne asada fries 30 dollars. Too expensive for the quality of food they gave me a lot of topping but not a lot of meat on the fries. The carne asada is too salty which throws off everything you can't add hot sauce or its just inedible. So I just wasted 13 dollars on a burrito. This place was one of the better taco shop in North Park but I don't know if it's new management or what but the quality for price is off, hopefully they get it together and do better.

Yelp
Ok, I have loved Mexican food my whole life, and this Roberto's is my go-to place. The quality of the ingredients and original recipes never disappoint. I get the chicken enchilada plate with a side of incredible jalapeño carrots. Every bite is perfect...the tortillas, the tender white chicken, the cheese, the sauce, the beans, and the rice are consistently perfect. They also give you a handful of salad for crunch. I can't think of a better meal.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Even the sauce is meh. Nice heat, but flavorless; along with the food. This is NOT a "San Diego Taco Shop". It's an authentic tortilla in a fast food chain pretending to be one. I ordered a bean and rice burrito and a ham breakfast burrito. Paid $16.50. Service was quick. Better options can be found within a few blocks.

Daniel F.

Yelp
Always amazing food always hits the spot! We ordered the taquitos and asada fries. Never a let down

Luis C.

Yelp
Was really disappointed, ordered a California burrito with guacamole and received a bean and cheese burrito instead. Paid almost $15 for just a bean and cheese burrito!!
google avatar

Gabby A.

Yelp
We ordered 2 breakfast burritos and they gave us 1 california burrito and 1 asada chips. The carne asada was good along with the salsa. But the fact that they gave us the wrong order was annoying. Service was fast. We drove through and left immediately before checking. Note to self check food before leaving
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Wow, my partner just ordered from here and forgot salsas, I went through the line to grab some...was happy to pay for them. Before I even got a word out, the woman working acted like I was lying, didn't even offer for me to purchase the salsas and shut the the window. I said I'm happy to pay for them and wanted 4 instead of 2... so freaking rude and slid the window closed super hard waving her hand for me to leave. I'm sorry that's reckless and lazy. If you don't want a job ... quit. Super unpleasant attitude.
google avatar

Tuyet N.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats based off of their star rating....should have went to Yelp to check first but I was hangry and ordered on impulse. BIG Mistake. I ordered a carne asada burrito and their combination plate that consisted of a beef burrito and 2 cheese enchiladas. Also a side of hot carrots. Both the burritos and the enchilada sauce were as salty as the Pacific Ocean! Not edible what so ever. And the cheese in the enchiladas was not even melted!! Hot carrots was meh. The only saving grace to this meal was the beans and rice. It was ok and at least edible... Sorry but this was the first and last time.

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
DO THEY MAKE COMMISSION OFF HOT SAUCE?! The lady has the audacity to DENY my request for more hot sauces for my 2 burritos... even after I tipped on their new card reader. Def dropping this spot forever and sharing for others to be aware.

Stan's M.

Yelp
Been coming to this particular Roberto's since I joined the Navy in 1982. It has always been the best of the chain but recent visits have left me disappointed. Was there recently and ordered the chicken enchiladas. The chicken was supposed to be shredded but I guess someone was lazy and just threw in a few big chunks of chicken. To make things worse it was topped with cold cheese, not even melted. There rice and beans have always been the best but everything else is kind of hit and miss. Sorry to say this place has gone down hill over the years.

April M.

Yelp
I ordered 2 carne asada tacos and was super disappointed by them. Tortillas were hard and bland. Meat tasted nothing but pepper. Topping was just a bunch of tomato?? Quality has been going downhill in the past year. Very expensive food for the quality you get. Also, service can be better. They we can be very rude at the window.

Meghan S.

Yelp
This place has become such a disappointment. Food used to be great and prices fair. Food is now gross, and prices have gone way up. They have gotten my order wrong more often than they've gotten it right lately. Not sure what has changed but I hope this is a temporary down swing.

Joe L.

Yelp
Downloaded Yelp to post this picture and say what the heck is this??? Burrito the same size as a 16 oz coke can?! Hopefully someone reads this and takes their money somewhere else.

B M.

Yelp
The worst bacon breakfast burrito i have ever had. I just wish robertos was consistent because the one in pb is good and this one is terrible

Casey B.

Yelp
When your favorite carne fries place starts offering surf&turf fries - you try them - they are perffffffection - keeping the best in town reputation in my book - new favorite! The sauce is chef's kiss! -perfection and the shrimp is also cooked to perfection. Thank you for what - going on 13 years personally of my favorite spot in town :) appreciate you all! Say what yup to Alex for me - will have to venture up to Encinitas :)

Kyle J.

Yelp
Ate chicken tacos here last night and woke up this morning violently ill from food poisoning. They probably aren't washing their hands or something. Hopefully I will recover soon but def won't come back and risk it again.

Yelp
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The lady working the window tonight completely messed up my order. When I called and asked for credit for a remake she tells me no she will just give me the missing ingredient. Let's put it this way if you ordered a pizza and the pizza place forgets to put pepperonis on your pizza are you going to be OK with them just giving you a side of pepperonis when you return???? Idiots!!!!! I'm never going back here again!!!!!!!!!!! I do not recommend this place

Yelp
Ordered what my group of 3 asked for. I was shocked when I drove to the window and was told my order total was $71! I asked for my receipt and saw one item for nearly $35. I asked what it was and the rude guy repeated my order. Apparently we didn't understand each other. I asked for a 2 taco carne asada combo. He said they didn't have that, even though the on line menu said they did. So he was giving me what he thought I wanted, for $35! I said that's not what I wanted so he started talking shit to the other guy inside about me. I told him he just earned a bad review with his poor customer service and he started arguing with me. He gave me the difference back but never gave me the 2 asada tacos I originally asked for. I got back to my party of 3 and there was only food for 2 in the bag. Needless to say I didn't go back and never will. Super rude, unprofessional and not kind to customers. Aka; they suck.

Zach W.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the roll tacos I tried were among the worst I've ever had, and the red salsa tasted like a poorly made marinara sauce. I also ordered a simple cheese quesadilla, which was absolutely disgusting. The cheese had an unnaturally vibrant orange color, and I literally couldn't eat it, so I threw it away. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.!

Yelp
Legit. It is a legend. The original If you want authentic- come here! Everything is amazing...
google avatar

WileyPalm Springs C.

Yelp
Carne asada here is high quality and alot on taco that is like two tacos or 3 at most taco shops. Chorizo egg burrito was as good as any. Bean and cheese burrito average.....still looking for a good one in San D area
google avatar

Frank Q.

Yelp
This place used to be great but the quality has fallen off a cliff. I got a mixed burrito this week and the entire burrito was one huge chunk of beef that wasn't even shredded. It was obviously inedible and should not have been served to a customer
google avatar

Cat W.

Yelp
This place is the authentic Mexican food I remember San Diego being famous for. I moved back here 4 years ago and could not find a decent burrito to save my life. Finally tried Roberto's yesterday and found what I was missing. How did I forget about this place? Best breakfast burrito ever! I don't know what they do to their beans to make them so delicious but this place is legit. Just like the old days I remember.

David S.

Yelp
The food is decent. It's my local taco shop and I used to go pretty regularly. I like the hot sauce. But there's a woman who works there now who is extremely rude. They need to get rid of her - she's gonna hurt the business. If you see a woman working the front counter just avoid the place
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
i went yesterday and got a veggie burrito with grilled chicken & a chicken burrito... bad idea... i don't know if they changed the chicken part they use but there were bone pieces in my veggie burrito & lots of fatty parts in the chicken burrito it wasn't a pleasant experience tbh i hate bone and chewy meat so both burritos were disappointing... & can we also talk about their taco prices 1 carne asada taco cost $6 dollars... crazy price just for the location.

Amanda N.

Yelp
This is usually my go-to taco shop since I live nearby. Majority of the time they never mess up my orders. Food is good but today I ordered a breakfast burrito deluxe which comes with ham, bacon, eggs and cheese. They literally gave me 6 slices of ham NO BACON whatsoever. Most of the burrito was eggs. Come on now $14 you would think they'd hook you up. What a rip off, don't waste your money here get your meal somewhere else...
google avatar

Karla R.

Yelp
Come for the burritos but stay far, far away from their fries. I'll start with the bad right off the bat. I ordered some fries and a breakfast burrito to go. I got home less than five minutes later so there's no way the food could have gotten cold in such a short amount of time. The fries were completely awful. There was practically no salt on them and they were horrendously undercooked. Seriously, they tasted like they were just thawed then thrown onto a styrofoam box to give away. I was so disappointed at the lackluster and taste that when I got home, I COOKED THEM MYSELF so they could actually be edible. The breakfast burrito I ordered, however, was great. It was everything an AM burrito should be: comforting, hot and full of ooey gooey goodness that just melts in your mouth. As much as I enjoyed the burrito, it wasn't enough to salvage my experience with Roberto's :T
google avatar

Tana W.

Yelp
My favorite taco shop. Quick. Easy. DELICIOUS! I don't know how they can make a simple bean and cheese burrito taste so good, but it's like unwrapping a little package of warm love. Lol.
google avatar

Kaloni S.

Yelp
I've tried a few fast food Mexican restaurants in the area and this is one of the better ones. The drive thru typically moves quickly and the food is always hot and fresh. Tonight I ordered a carne asada quesadilla and a fish taco. The quesadilla was delicious, the carne asada was so flavorful and tender. The fish taco wasn't my favorite. There was way too much sauce on it, I could barely taste the fish. I've also tried the breakfast burritos here as well and they are delicious! I LOVE the green salsa, but definitely ask for extra because the containers they use are super small. Definitely recommend giving this place a try!
google avatar

Cathy G.

Yelp
Still the most reliable carne asada burrito! The ambiance is zero, but the food is always solid, and I like their hot sauce. Roberto's in Encinitas is where I had my first carne asada burrito almost 50 years ago. It is remarkable that they have been able to maintain such consistency!
google avatar

Brent R.

Yelp
Love this spot. Probably go here every week or two and have almost never been disappointed. Friendly staff, great breakfast burritos, and usually generous portions. It's a bummer how much prices have gone up in the last two years, but it's still a better deal than chain fast food and the quality is better too.

B J.

Yelp
The food here is good! However, they recently hired a woman at the window who seems to be on edge. I asked for an item on the side, but she forgot to put it in the bag. When I asked about it, she lost her temper. I asked why it upset her, and she said my voice annoyed her. I've been going there for over 10 years and have noticed that the line is always short lately. They may want to recommend some training for her, or she might need to handle some personal issues.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Always great food, with very little time waiting in line. Oh and also wonderful service from the employees
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
The burritos from Roberto's always hits the spot. Even with a constant flow of traffic, I find service to be consistently fast. Less than ten minute wait if I'm walking up to the window. In terms of Covid safety, I like that you can do drive through or walk up. There are several outdoor tables to dine at on site, if you're not looking to take your food home. My favorite burrito at Roberto's are any of the breakfast burrito. Especially after a night of drinking. It absorbs the night away! Carne Asada burritos are decent. More on the 3.5 star range than the 4 star. If your burrito cools down too much, the meat and tortilla get tough. Pop it in the microwave for less than a minute and your back in action.

Jordan M.

Yelp
The quesadilla carne asada was pretty subpar- just meet and cheese slapped together not sure how that was $13. However, the reason for my review is the wire that I bit into and nearly broke a tooth on. Will not be returning and would advise everyone to pick one of the other 40 taco shops around instead
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Mixed meat and bean burrito was gas, ask for extra limes. All and all, go get some food
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Food is great and this place is the most consistently solid taco shop in the area. There are places like Colimas that have a better reputation but have fallen apart since COVID. This place is my go to for carne asada fries...they never disappoint.
google avatar

Taura G.

Yelp
My Shredded Beef Tostada was really good. The drive thru was empty and they were waiting on their early dinner crowd. My tostada took about 3min total to get and it was very tasty. I will aak for guacamole next time to enhance it; but it was delicious. It's one of those foods that was so good, you want to have it again soon. It's not the prettiest outside of a taco shop but the food is good. There are a couple of homeless regulars who hang out up front and they like the food too. They have good taste as well. San Diego really needs to address homeless issues positively. I always feel bad and end up buying them food when I order because its just the right thing to do. Pay it forward. Anyway, this Roberto's has good wait times and good food.

Michael C.

Yelp
They put guacamole on a burrito after I asked them not to. When I went back to show them and mentioned my avocado allergy, she said "oh that's ok, we don't have avocados here." I had to explain how guacamole was made. Also chips were undercooked.
google avatar

Ona R.

Yelp
I had an excellent experience here today, 09/23/2019. This place came highly recommended by a co worker and I was told to get the shrimp burrito and add carne asada. The shrimp burrito is about $8 and some change and with the add Carne Asada it was under $12.25. So worth it because it's either a meal for 2 when split in half, a meal for now and leftovers later or for the gordita in me it could have been a mea for the NOW!!!!! but it was sooooo seasoned, flavorful, packed with shrimp, carne asada, rice, cheese, pico and the table cream and game out hot to the touch because it was that fresh- I should have let it rest before digging in but couldn't wait. The red hot sauce has some heat in it so use with caution ... the green was not as potent as the red but still delicious. The staff was super friendly, food is prepared in a reasonable time, the establishment was pretty cleaned and the customers were in and out. I read others reviews and saw they had some negative experiences, but it's ones willing to stop by I don't think the quality and love that they put in the food would go unnoticed or be compromised by anything less than. This is a legit taco shop/Mexican restaurant. Might not be the 5 star dining experience, but don't be fooled the foods on point, the staff have heart and this is a local establishment that's holds its own. They don't look to be deprived of business and it looks like a staple restaurant within the community. If willing to make as many trips this way because I don't get this kind of authenticity with the restaurants in the Rancho San Diego area!!!! I'll be back and next time grabbing my coworker a burrito to show appreciation for always saying great things about this establishment, which he's right, it didn't disappoint!

Yelp
This ridiculous place just tried to charge me two dollars for cilantro lol they don't even do that in Mexico pathetic won't be back
