Roch Castle | Best castles to stay in

"Built in the late 12th century, to fortify the Welsh border, this small, 6-bedroom castle features your classic thick stone walls, arched windows, stone staircases leading to single-storey tower rooms. Interiors are contemporary, so ideal for those who are willing to compromise on authenticity for their home comforts. Also available for exclusive hire. " - Matthew Roach

Roch is really cool, but travelers should know it is remote (although there are places to eat within driving distance) and the rooms are really small. The service was great, however, and I really enjoyed the amenities provided in the lounge as well as the breakfast. It’s certainly a different experience and it is really cool to stay in a castle. If you are interested in castles and a relaxed atmosphere, I highly recommend. I would not take a child here or anyone that isn’t pretty mobile.

We stayed over the weekend, and had 2 rooms (De Rupe and Lucy Walters) for the family. Both rooms were extremely well appointed, maintained and scrupulously clean. All the amenities therein were of a very high standard. The view from De Rupe was spectacular.|We loved the lounge area for relaxation and I used the study for 2h to work. The board games and ready access to snacks and beverages were much appreciated.|Breakfast was excellent - both in terms of the choices offered and the quality of the food and coffee. I recommend agreeing with the hotel what time you would like breakfast before you arrive though. |The staff were super friendly and very efficient!|The castle is a short walk to the beautiful bay and coastal paths, as well as the Victoria Inn for dinner.

Came to Roch castle last night with my wife and we enjoyed a wonderful stay. We were greeted by a lovely young lady who took impeccably good care of us. Decent quality, well designed rooms; stunning architecture; stunning views, and all round great service. Highly recommended! We’ll most definitely be back.

Everything about our stay at Roch Castle was simply splendid. From the moment we arrived, the attention to detail was second to none. The castle itself is breathtaking, seamlessly blending its rich history with modern, tasteful decor. Every room was spotlessly clean—absolutely deserving of a 5-star rating for cleanliness.||The atmosphere was serene and peaceful, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and made us feel warmly welcomed throughout our stay. Breakfast was a highlight—delicious and made with fresh, local produce.||Truly, there isn’t a single thing I would have changed. I couldn’t fault the experience in any way. Roch Castle exceeded every expectation, and I will 100% be returning. Highly, highly recommend!

We went to visit the castle grounds since it was in the village we were staying. A youngster was very welcoming. She said we could come in the castle and look around in their lounge and enjoy the hot drinks that were on offer. Lovely Panoramic view of Newgale beach and the hills around.

If I could give a higher score I would. It’s always been my dream to stay in a castle (but with modern facilities) and it came true this week. From the moment we drove in I was in awe; it’s the ‘Mary Poppins of castle stays’ - practically perfect in every way. It’s a beautiful place and we were shown round by the lovely Lily. Our room was on the 3rd floor - quite a few stairs, but worth it. It was stunning. The views!! Everything was top quality. The bathroom suite, the huge bed, the softest towels, decor, artwork ….|There’s a comfy lounge on the second floor with an honesty bar. Lovely walk around to see the views. |Breakfast was also top notch! Lots of choice and all perfectly served and cooked. |We dined at their partner hotel Twr y Felin on my birthday and again we were blown away. I’ve never had such tasty and lovely choices. I was given a Welsh love spoon as a gift too. |Sad to come home!!

Roch Castle is possibly the best hotel I have stayed at in the UK. If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautifully restored hotel, you cannot go wrong with Roch Castle. The location is fantastic, with easy access to St Davids and the Pembrokeshire coast. The rooms are well appointed and finished to a high standard. All the staff we met were exceptionally welcoming and helpful.||The lounge area is comfortable, with a great mix of sociable spaces and cosy private nooks. The views are stunning, especially from the higher rooms. Breakfast was delicious. I would definitely recommend Roch Castle and would love to return.

I wanted to book something special for our 35th Anniversary & have to say Roch Castle staff were an absolute joy to deal with, from confirming the booking with reception to arranging the massage treatment to the lovely touch on our arrival of a card & gift. we had one of the highest rooms with spectacular vistas over Milford Haven, The Castle is exceptional & fully deserving of its 5 star rating with 6 beautiful rooms which despite being refurbished to a high standard still retain the original features, a luxurious central lounge area with a charming honesty bar. If anyone is thinking of visiting St Davids or the very close Newgale beach, this is a perfect base. It’s quite fitting we chose this for our 35th anniversary as the stroll to the local pub was like stepping back in time, from the appearance of the surrounding properties, friendly locals to the grass verges being well kept & not being overgrown with weeds, a car passing every minute instead of every second, you can almost feel the stress fall away.. Thank you again, we will return. Highly recommended.
