Cannabis Drink Brand Acquires Rochester Mills Production Brewery | Eater Detroit

"Although Rochester Mills Beer Company’s restaurant and brewery were excluded from the sale, I note the acquisition could allow some Rochester Mills labels—such as Milkshake Stout—to achieve wider distribution or even inspire a non-alcoholic cannabis spinoff." - Brenna Houck

We visited here for the first time last weekend. I thought all the halloween decorations were so cute! The service was a little slow, imo, but everything was good and our waiter was friendly. My husband got the lobster mac n cheese and he really loved it. I got the hummus pit ( the only meatless option) and it was delicious.

Mike S.

Google
It's a really cool place! We had a work dinner here. The menu is diverse allowing everyone to select something delicious for each dietary requirement. We enjoyed their beer menu allowing us to try local craft. Thanks for hosting us! Our waiter Jonathan was awesome! We will see you next time we are in town!

Google
Not much to say that hasn’t been said. I have patronized this establishment on occasion ever since they first opened. First and most importantly, their beers are excellent! Some of the best I’ve had and I love the fact that we have this locally. Their food items have been consistently good. Nothing exceptional but you know you will not be disappointed. So why the 4 star rating for the food? The answer is value. They are charging 5 star prices but delivering 4 star food. Working in customer service I can tell their servers are trained in how to greet and greet their customers. Though most everyone I saw was young, they did their jobs as if they had been doing so for many years! The atmosphere was as would be expected. It’s sort of like a big party inside which I believe is by design, but it can get extremely crowded and be very loud making conversations at a table difficult. In my opinion the best time to go is for lunch or happy hours. To be precise, Rochester Mills Beer Company gets closer to a 4.5 but definitely not a 5, which in my opinion is still very good and enough for me to want to come back.

Google
I'll have to try the food next time (it smelled incredible but I had eaten before arriving) but the beer is definitely a step apart from other places. The milkshake stout is apparently the bread & butter of this establishment; it was a cut above the typical brew. I greatly enjoyed the seasonal Michigan Nut Brown, which definitely had a very (toasted?) nutty aroma and aftertaste, and wasn't too heavy on the palette for how rich and dark it was. The atmosphere was very enjoyable, the live music was a treat, and the staff all seemed to be having a pretty good time as well! (Caroline is a delight!)

Google
This was a great Saturday night salad. The beer was absolutely unique too. Saturday night has free music and it was open until 1 AM. We walked in and sat at the bar. It did take a little bit of time for us to get acknowledged, but we were behind a pole. The staff was completely friendly and attentive after they realized we were there.

Google
Variety of beers, many good choices. And the food was tasty but too much oily inside.

Andrew A.

Google
The manager, America, is super accommodating and amazing. She was able to help me out with a last minute request and saved the day!!! Thank you so much for your help! If you are looking for a brewery with excellent customer service and excellent management go here!

Emma W.

Google
First time here. I came for the 12 milkshake stouts. Number one it was so much more reasonable than I expected price wise. Two, I had Samantha as a bartender…give that girl a raise!!!! She was such a ray of sunshine and a delight to talk to. She knew what she was talking about and made wonderful recommendations. Such a good experience!

Yelp
The service was great! We had the great honor of Sherry, Sherri, spelling? Being our server. Be sure to ask for her! I liked my beer (Milkshake Stout). I asked Sherry If it brought all the boys to the bar. The rest was history I was good...I wouldn't call it Milkshake though. I didn't get that hint. It was good, but it didn't bring all the boys to the bar lol. My partner is an IPA drinker and she had the Dank. It is her favorite IPA ever! Even brought a growler to take back home to Texas (if it makes it). I actually liked it too (I'm not an IPA drinker.) I enjoyed the ambiance as well, and they have a large patio which is a plus!

Yelp
Great spacious interior that offers the ability to spread parties out. The have a bar area, billiards, outside patio and normal table and chair and high top tables and chairs available. Staff is always friendly and welcoming. We have been here a couple times recently as we love the trivia nights. Brewers bread is amazing. The pizza sauce that comes with it is great. Chicken quesadillas are very good. The Dagwood Burger. I order it medium rare but it was serve red medium. That said it had great flavor. The onion rings on top were not crispy and were not as warm as the actual burger which tells me they probably were not made fresh for the burger. Bacon, Canadian bacon, cheese and bbq were all delicious. Fries were generous and delicious. Burger Cook & flavor: 22 Burger presentation: 10 Bun quality: 8 Toppings: 9 Fries: 9 Price: 9 Ambiance/ service: 10 Total: 77

Yelp
We visit here often because we are mug club members. The October beer is one of the best I have ever had. The food is hot and delicious. The salmon and the green beans are tasty and well made. The chicken tenders are an old time favorite. Good service too.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer, great environment, great happy hour but the food is just meh. The nachos were huge but flavorless and without seasonings. The bang bang shrimp was good but not crunchy as you would expect. The wings were ok. The Rochester red is a great beer! Still searching for anything on the food menu that is worth ordering again.
google avatar

Pedro O.

Yelp
awful service, two hours waiting, staff was rude, not recommend it AT ALL, food was cold and they were just unattentive
google avatar

Florence C.

Yelp
Brew-tiful! Solid beer. Good food. Excellent knowledgeable service. This huge beer hall is good for groups and dates. I came here around dinnertime on a Friday with my big fam of like 14 people and we were seated right away. Their German-style Water Street Wheat was amazingly good and so are their Bavarian Pretzels- crusty on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. Cheers! NOTES/TIPS: **Easy parking in their huge lot. **Huge menu. Something for everyone. Good kids menu.

Jerry D.

Yelp
Went with friends. Food was only OK. Service was slow, the waitress was no where to be seen for extended periods (maybe she had too many tables) and we had to ask repeatedly for napkins, salad dressing... even when the restaurant was only 1/2 full for most of our meal. Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
Stopped in to watch lions game at the bar as I wanted to try this place. The beers were very good and was pleasantly surprised how many items were on menu! I ordered the shepherds pie and wow it was huge and very good! Next time I'll order the cup as the regular portion is way too much for me. The bar was full but everyone was super friendly and just a great atmosphere. The server was super friendly and I actually joined the mug club as it's a great deal! Definitely coming back for sure, probably many times. The place is huge and has tons of seating as well.

Yelp
The perfect starting point for a night out with friends before going to see the holiday lights down Main Street in Rochester, MI. There is a beer for everyone here (along with wine and seltzer) and the food is fantastic. Get the jambalaya, the best in all of Michigan in my opinion.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Solid place. The food was decent, nice attentive service, and a decent beer selection.
google avatar

Ahmed M.

Yelp
Visited here this past weekend and left wondering why I don't go here more often. It's a great atmosphere and food is good. The steak and potatoes I ordered was great, it was a good meal.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
Julia was amazing. She was super friendly and efficient. I would come back just to be able to interact with Julia. All of the staff were friendly and accommodating. Such a great experience today. Thank you!
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
Food ok, service ok, prices ok. That's about it. Best part is the 1/2 off appetizers before 6pm. The steak cane with a weird sauce on it. The fries were kind of cold. The server was stretched way too thin. Not her fault.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Lots of great options for entrees, services was quick and thorough. Was busy but happy inside for ambiance. Not pictured but recommend the shepherds pie!
google avatar

Billy L.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 8 people to listen to the live band on a Friday night. Some of the people ordered dinner and they all seem to like their meals. I just came to have a beverage and dance.
google avatar

Erin E.

Yelp
What a great local spot for food and beer. Unlike many local breweries they do have a full bar. Our bartender/waiter was excellent. We came in a little more than an hour before close and we're still able to get a very good meal. Everything was hot and fresh. They have a great selection. It's got a very chill vibe and it's clean and comfortable. Definitely one of the better breweries we've been to in terms of food and variety.
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
Service was good and the inside had tons of space, good for large parties. The food was all decent. I enjoyed the white sangria. None of the food stood out, but no complaints it was all decent!
google avatar

Shay J.

Yelp
We had a fantastic experience all around! The appetizers came out fast and were delicious and dinner was great too! Our drinks were always full and our server Colleen could not have been better! She was the icing on the cake for us. Well done Rochester Mills!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I have been to Rochester Mills quite a few times over the years and I have had good food and beer each time. They have a pretty good beer selection and enough styles to find something that you like. The service has been pretty good overall. The last few times I have gone it hasn't been too busy so I'm not sure how the service is during their busy times. Big parking lot and quite a bit of seating. The brewery is in a historic brick building that was once the Western Knitting Mill. The building has a lot of character and it's a great venue for special events.
google avatar

Shelly L.

Yelp
I just left the restaurant, spent $400 between the four of us. Our waitress was great, appitizers were good and main course was okay. Really liked their beer. Totally enjoyed the band "The Pulse" and was having the greatest time until the band finished and this manager Jessica went up to my husband and said "get your shit packed up and get out of there". We were there to just spend money and have fun. She was the rudest manager I've ever come in contact with i approached her and she told me I was drunk, I was not!! I will contacting whoever is over her and explain how rude this woman was. If we return I will first out if she is on shift. I really think she is bringing down the restaurant by working there! She needs to go!
google avatar

Cleveland J.

Yelp
I've been going to this brewery for years. Beer is consistent and fantastic. There is an outdoor deck and tons of seating. Service is always great. Beer is a 5, food is a 3, hence the 4 star.

Yelp
What in the hell happened to this place? It used to be good years ago. Was just here on a Sunday....waited 90 minutes for a simple order for 2 people. Servers were awful too and never checked on us. I went up to the bar and told them to cancel our order around 85 minutes of waiting. Food was terrible too. Dry and cold like our lazy/careless excuse of a server had been letting it sit back there for awhile. Manager took the order off our bill, but I'm never coming back. I saw everyone else waiting ridiculously long times. Their beer isn't very good either. Go support a better business!
google avatar

Lest L.

Yelp
I hated the fish tacos. You have to put the taco together yourself. Fish could've been chicken. Sauce was ranch? And salsa? No sides included. Famous beer cheese was saltier than the the Dead Sea, but if you're into that flavor was ok. and friend said sesame chicken was ok but side of green beans was undercooked. I now remember why I haven't been here in over a year. Server is MIA. Had to hunt down napkins myself. Want to leave, no check in sight. Sad.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
We get chicken wings everywhere we go & this place is the worst! Like battered bones that they deep-fried. So small I thought they might've gotten morning doves from the yard? We'll never come back because... what else is low quality here? Many brew pubs out there. this one's OFF our list.

Yelp
I honestly thought I had reviewed this place long ago, but I guess not. Now it is on us coming here the weekend before Christmas where everyone is having a party or wants to see the lights, so it honestly took two and a half hours to get seated. But on a normal night, we have never waited too long. But the wait was worth it. My child loves their Shepard's pie and that is why we came this evening, also to look at the lights and have a nice warm winter meal. It was worth it. The Shepard's pie is so delicious! Two of us got just the bowl and one got the huge portion. But even the bowl is fairly large. I also got a shrimp Cobb salad which unfortunately I forgot to take a picture, but it was huge, good enough for either several people or tons of leftovers. It came with some pillowy pita bread on the side, it was so good. The family also ordered a couple Korean beef wraps which were meaty and delicious. It had pickled vegetables that reminded me of the Thai cucumber salads with vinegar. The drinks were really good too. I tried the chocolate cherry stout. It was good, but the real star was the snickerdoodle red! For sure try that one if you are a fan of cinnamon. The milkshake stout was also really good that night, very rich and drinkable. I love the atmosphere. This is a great place for families and friends gatherings. There is always so much going on. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and even apologetic about the wait, even though I understood coming during a holiday weekend was not going to be a light crowd. I have had their other food, all really good, but tonight the food was especially good. We will be back for more.

Dawana H.

Yelp
Food was good, service was great and there are a lot of menu choices for food, drinks and alcoholic beverages. It is loud inside. There are a lot of TVs showing sports (I am good with that) and families with little kids. It is an amazing place to be during the Lion's games.

Yelp
Reservation process over the phone was good, not great. Very friendly but was on hold for several minutes before able to set a day and time. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated, two of the six in our party, were we sat down and waited. After seven minutes with no one coming to our table to even acknowledge us I headed to the bar to order some drinks. Noticed plenty of bartenders at a more than half empty seats around bar. Greeted after another 2+ minutes, drinks made and back to our table. The hostess had come by with two additional people to sit with us, but we're not part of our group. Shortly after that the rest of our family showed up and so did Brittney W . our waitress. Brittany did get drinks and apologized, though not that it was needed. Her service was delightful and outstanding with a personal touch. Food was very good with only a slight issue in respect to the wrong French fries served and one of the appetizers never brought to the table and promptly removed from the bill. Had the service from Brittney been anything less than what it was the score would have been less. Thank you Brittney W.

Yelp
This is a service review since I'm not local. My mother is a regular at the Mills and has brought me here for dinner, happy hour, etc. in the past. Admittedly it's been a while and I am looking forward to a return visit. This review is for the outstanding customer service that I received over the miles this week. I wanted to surprise Mom with a gift certificate and reached out via the Rochester Mills Beer Company website. It's a really useful site, but I was not finding a way to buy a gift card. I filled out the Contact Us form and - kid you not! - I had a response within the hour. All I needed to do was make a phone call, or so I thought. I didn't want to hit them during the lunch rush, so I waited. And then was distracted. And then Happy Hour was approaching and I figured that I'd call the next day (I was planning in advance; go, me!). Sure enough, a very helpful and friendly staff member CALLED ME and asked if she could help with the request. As we say up in these parts, holy wah! It took moments to complete, Mom's surprise is queued up in very capable hands and I just might have a shot at becoming her favorite child. *snort* At least she'll have an awesome night with her friends without worrying about the tab. My accolades can wait. Thank you Rochester Mills for kicking off the weekend for me and Mom!!
google avatar

Betsy K.

Yelp
Great service and it was surprising due to the fact that it was a Saturday night. There were 10 of us and the place was packed! Food was really really good and brought out quickly. Everything was hot and tasty. I had not been here for quite some time, but I'm going to put it on the roster. I don't drink beer, but those who did raved about it.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Since we were in the area and have heard really good things about this place from a few people we decided to give it a try. We went here for a date night. I loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in! Everyone was very welcoming and we were seated right away. It's such a cozy warm place, I just loved it! It's dimly lit which I love because it makes it more romantic. We shared a small pepperoni pizza and the Hungarian goulash. Both dishes were amazing! Our waitress was very attentive and made sure our drinks were refilled. This is a great establishment to visit if you are in downtown Rochester. It is definitely a gem! We will be coming back here to try other dishes for sure!
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
We had a rehearsal dinner for my son and daughter-in-law at the Lazy Daze Lounge, a private room that is part of the Rochester Mills Brewing Co. Everything was perfect. The food and the service were great. We wanted an event that was private and informal. We couldn't have been happier.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
Large party in private room with one server that tended bar and took orders. This was all done at the bar rather than at the tables so everyone ate at different times, which was unfortunate. Food was average bar food - fish and chips, pizza, spinach dip, pretzels. By 10p the live band started and that was our queue to exit even though we had the room until 2am. The crowd of seniors were dancing and enjoyed themselves though.
google avatar

Karolina K.

Yelp
We had a team holiday party over there and for the most part it was good. It's a pretty big place with some games you can play. Very difficult to find restroom, no signs anywhere. They don't have any indication on the menu if anything is vegan, so I had to ask if there is something they can make. Fortunately some of the salads could be veganized and also their hummus wrap was an easy option just by removing cheese. I went with that one and sweet potato fries. It was pretty good and definitely huge. I was able to eat only half of it. The wrap that is homemade was delicious, so were sweet potato fries. We had a nice time and my colleagues enjoyed their food too but said it wasn't anything spectacular either.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
It's a big place. Billiards. Huge bar area. Nikki is waiting on us today. She's nice. She's constantly rubbing around, literally. We ordered the street nacho and two Sante fe chicken salads, one with blackened chicken on it. The street nachos aren't too bad, the corn dip yummy but is mostly on top of the chips and not throughout. We got a side of their salsa. My husband said the salsa tastes like a smoker's bar. I thought it tasted like licking an ashtray. It's interesting that we both got the same salad and my hubby's has corn tortilla strips and mine doesn't, but I don't mind it at all, since I wouldn't want it on mine anyways. The miss was welcomed. The Sante Fe salads are okay. The chicken is cold on both of our salads. We both had a 1/4 of an avocado that was well bruised. The dressing was too sweet for me, really had to amp it up with some sriracha sauce, which made it better for me. The total was $42.25 today.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
it's Saturday night and busy. I'm here for my birthday. This place is never disappointing.

Christie J.

Yelp
Asked to not sit by the band but did they anyway-even when other sections were open. Waited 20 minutes to get water. Food was bland-Santa Fe Salad with bland (boiled?) chicken and no seasoning. Asked if they had ginger ale but got Sprite and bitters (a common bar trick-just tell me you don't have it, please). Haven't been in there in awhile and definitely not going back.
google avatar

Ian S.

Yelp
Lots of parking spaces That should have told me something.. This place has gone down hill. Warm beer and less than mediocre food.. My advice.....avoid until new management takes the reigns and puts the customer first.
google avatar

Jenna C.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed my red ale but food was just ok. I got the jambalaya, which was supposed to come with garlic bread but instead it came with half a cheese pizza lol (see picture). My brother got the Korean BBQ beef wrap and also thought it was fine but nothing special. On the other hand, service was awesome and everything came out relatively fast. We were able to score a table on their back deck, which was really nice, but the inside had plenty of seating too. Prices are reasonable, and the location in downtown Rochester is great, plus they even have their own (free) parking lot. The history of the building is kind of cool, and they even have merch! I'd definitely stop by again for a beer.
google avatar

Ahren S.

Yelp
Like beer? Staple Michigan brewery with access to quality food in lovely downtown. Pool tables, live music, great beer...why not
google avatar

Rob G.

Yelp
Why won't YELP let me rate this with NO STARS? I scheduled our golf league Holiday Party at the facility - only to have to worst experience with the waiter, food delivery and limited beverage service. Our waiter only had one table assigned to him - our group of 20. However, he would take an order and disappear for 20 to 30 minutes and claim that the bar was backed-up. Yet, guys in my group (after waiting 30 minutes for a beer) walk up to the bar and get a beer and be back at our table in 2 minutes. We ordered dinner at 6:30 p.m. and by 8:30 p.m. only half of our group received their meal. I asked the Assistant Manager to bring me the Manager twice, yet she failed to appear at our table to discuss the poor service our group received. We watched as new groups were seated around us, order food and drink, eat and leave the restaurant. We were told by many of the surrounding waitresses that our waiter was incompetent - just what we needed to hear. We had to constantly inquire where our food orders and drink orders were...until he blew a gasket and quit his job - clocked out, grabbed his coat and walked out. Was it poor training, staff letting the guy they disliked hang himself at work - who knows. All I know as the guy that set this evening up (yes - we had a reservation) it was a total embarrassment for me to have my league members experience such a crappy evening when it was supposed to be a holiday celebration. I hope the owners Mike and Missy Plesz take a good look at their operation so other customers never have to experience such a terrible evening in their establishment. For over 2.5 hours - the customer experience really sucked!
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I remember going for years, my husband was a mug club member, and we would stop here on st patty's day! So it's been awhile but I went out with friends and the food and drinks were as good as I remember. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. Atmosphere is as loud as I remember. I was a bit bummed they were out of a seasonal beer that they were advertising but the server suggested an alternative that was comparable, which I ordered and enjoyed. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because my water was empty for about 20 minutes, then the server came around asking if we needed anything and a few people said water. She left, didn't come back with water, and we had to flag her down for water (and to-go boxes). On one hand she did save me from eating my entire meal, because I didn't want to keep eating without water so I took it home. I look forward to going back again soon!
google avatar

Mike N.

Yelp
Food is good, nothing special but its a solid place to grab a beer or two and sandwich. Obviously they are a brewhouse so if you are nit into beer, its still OK for dinner but not my first choice. Waitresses was nice and generally attentive. Not my first choice in Rochester but its good enough to go if you have a few friends and are more interested in beer and music than dinner.

Yelp
Visited mainly because I was on the search for The Gypsy Goddess/Raspberry Radler and they had this on draft. I'm just now gaining an appreciation for beer, so when I find one that I love, I like to make sure I get my fill of it. Ended up stopping here during Happy hour- unbeknownst to us. Happy Hour M-F from 4pm-6pm, Means half priced appetizers and reduced Pint Prices. Two appetizers (bang bang shrimp and wings) and 4 pints came out to $33 before tip. My Gypsy Goddess came in at $7 for 2 pints. It was good- not as good as i remember it being when i got it somewhere else. Tiny Destroyer was $6, and Cloudy McClouderson was $3.75. Tasted similar, more bitter than I expected. Service was really good. Wings were REALLY good, We got BBQ. Bang Bang Shrimp- I would not order again, The pickled Veggies it came with were basically flavorful cucumbers and carrot shreds. We saw nachos pass by a few times and we would come back to try them during happy Hour. BAD: My drink class was dirty the first time around- I did not wear lipstick, but there was lipstick on the glass. So I mentioned it to the waitress and she got me a new pour. Not sure about the main entree's.

Dominic R.

Yelp
The service was good, but overall, the food was kinda just bland and overpriced. The food didn't really have any character to it. The beer was ok, but not great. Overall, considering the profile of Rochester Mills, as a brand, I expected a lot more and a lot better. I probably would not go here again

Erich K.

Yelp
Cool older building lots of character Colleen and Jess are the best... Gotta ask if they are available.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Love Rochester Mills. The restaurant is large and spacious. Great vibe when busy. The beer is excellent. The food is also very good and consistent. Their menu has a good variety of items for the whole family. Great weekend place to visit.
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
The ambiance here is great but I would stick to JUST the beer if I ever go back. My friend ordered a burger which came out extremely rare - in her words, "the burger was still mooing" which was not great to say the least. Another friend ordered their special which was the margarita and, be warned, prices aren't listed and her drink which was mostly ice to begin with was $15. Aside from that, the beer selection was great and it's a fun space for if you want to just have a place to sit around and grab a beer with friends.

Jason H.

Yelp
Food is average and pricey. I enjoyed the atmosphere felt fun. Service was good . Good place to grab a beer and bite, but if drinking isn't your thing may want to go else where.

Yelp
Whether for their happy hour specials, a mid day study hour, or a dinner meal with family, this is the place in downtown RH to go to. My favorite parts about coming here was during the day--not too crowded, where we could easily study with coffee for an hour or two while taking breaks now and then to play pool. Then that would ease into happy hour specials on both liquor and apps. Ah, the days before COVID. I miss them having the pool tables, that was such a massive draw for me. But it's understandable with pandemic regulations now. Look forward for things to go back to normal and make going to the Mill a regular part of my week again. As a side note of the place in general, I recommend getting a whiskey cocktail or one of their very filling salads. If you have any allergies or disliked ingredients, make sure to double check with the server to make sure it's not in the dish. They have this Brussel sprouts side dish that I ordered, but when it came out it had bacon on it--which was not mentioned in the menu description (I don't eat meat). They thankfully took it off for me with no problem, but just a heads up.
