The New Orleans Clubs and Music Venues of HBO’s ‘Treme’ | Eater New Orleans

"Rock ’n’ Bowl is where to go to find sharps, flats, spares, and strikes all hanging out together. It’s a bit unclear whether this is a nightclub hiding out in a full-size bowling alley, or a bowling alley out enjoying a secret nightlife. Either way, it’s a very New Orleans destination, located near the upriver edge of the city. (It’s about a $15 cab ride from downtown.) After Katrina and a parting of the ways with his earlier landlord, the owner moved a few blocks down to this former paint store, installed new lanes, added a bigger stage, and hauled much of his original funky decor to the new spot. Check the website for forthcoming shows—there’s always plenty of space for dancing, which is especially fun during Thursday zydeco nights."

It was my first time here and I was not expecting such a good time with the live music and bowling. It was packed and food was really good. I don't really have anything bad to say about it.

Google
Rock 'n' Bowl is more than just a bowling alley; it's a vibrant cultural hotspot in New Orleans that seamlessly blends the city's love for music, food, and fun. Imagine bowling to the sounds of zydeco and swing music, with a lively atmosphere and decor that exudes authentic gaudiness. On Tuesdays, you can swing dance, while Wednesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to zydeco, and the weekends feature a diverse lineup of performers. Booking a lane is straightforward, with reservations available for up to six people per lane. The full kitchen and bar, featuring the Front Porch Grill, ensure you won't go hungry or thirsty, offering everything from pub grub to New Orleans favorites. Murals by Tony Green add to its charm, making Rock 'n' Bowl a true New Orleans gem that perfectly captures the city's lively essence.

Google
The two ladies who are at the front window are very rude and unprofessional. I think that if Rock and Bowl want to continue to stay in business then they need to find people who enjoy their jobs and people who are professional. This is the worst customer service experience I have ever experienced. I will never spend my money with Rock' n Bowl if those two ladies at the front desk are still working there. Rock and Bowl need to do better.

Google
The Rock N Bowl in New Orleans is absolutely wonderful. There were 50 in our group, and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The music was on point, the food was great, the place was clean and the staff were absolutely wonderful. Those who bowled had a great time. Some of us learned different line dances. Even our bus driver came in and joined the dances. I strongly recommend the Rock N Bowl for just about any type of event.

Google
Surprisingly good food for a bowling alley. Service is always friendly. Their lanes are nice, but the house balls and any shoes you would want to rent are in rough condition. It is great for a work team get-together, though.

Google
Hosted a college graduation party here and it definitely did not disappoint! All of our friends and family had a great time, there was plenty of food and drinks for everyone! Almost everyone in our party bowled and danced! If the thought of hosting ur party at a “bowling alley” hinders you, this place is not just a “bowling alley”!

Google
Love!!!!! Went here on a Thursday night because of a recommendation from a friend and was hesitant to pay $15 for a cover. But do it! because with the cover you get live music and dance lessons from the other bar goers. My friends and I had a blast here our first night in NOLA. Starting with dancing and then onto bowling once we got tired… PS. You don’t need to rent bowling shoes if you have close toed shoes. If you are wearing sandals you have to rent shoes and buy socks for $3

Yelp
I first went to the original Rock 'n" Bowl 30 years ago. Saw Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Cha's playing. Did my first USA bowing with naught but a paper and pencil for scoring. It was so much fun and I knew then the South had a piece of my soul. Opened in 1941, it suffered and closed during Katrina. It re-opened but relocated in 2009. Go bowl and dance, eat and drink and just have fun.

Yelp
My friends and I decided to go on a Wednesday night thinking it wouldn't be too crowded. When we got there about three lanes were rented out to a company's holiday party. We didn't think much of it and bought a lane. After about five minutes into bowling the music cuts off and a man starts talking over a microphone about a raffle starting for the holiday party. Little did we know this raffle would last for an hour. So we had to bowl with no music for an hour and listen to someone screaming raffle numbers over a microphone. When I asked if they could turn the music back on I was told that "they are paying costumers" so they had to let them to their raffle. I guess it didn't matter that I was a paying customer as well. Don't call yourself "rock n bowl" if there isn't gonna be any music. The food was also gross but we didn't except much from bowling alley food to begin. I don't drink so I got a short can of redbull from the bar that was $6. Both food and drinks were overpriced for what the quality was. We will never be returning here and I wouldn't recommend that you choose this place to bowl either. There are better places to bowl in NOLA.

Yelp
Thursday nights are live Zydeco. The music was top notch, the bar service was excellent. As far as food is considered: Eat before you go. The food was lame.

Yelp
Rock N Bowl was the perfect place to have my son's 30th surprise party. From the planning to the moment the party was over, the staff at RnB was professional, knowledgeable and caring. From start to finish, it was a perfect experience! Thank you!

Yelp
This is my first time at this location to go bowling with a friend of mine. Upon arrival the place seemed pretty cool, and it looked like they have a lot of music and performances there as well. This place seem to be pretty interesting and exciting. They didn't serve food but the bar seemed very well stocked with all of the most peoples favorite libations. We proceeded to pay for a lane for one hour at the cost of $25 dollars. I didn't consider that bad at all. We got to Arlene to begin bowling and we couldn't find a ball that wasn't damaged or broken. Every bowling ball we picked up felt as though there had been someone who threw them around in rocks or concrete. Equipment seemed quite outdated and the balls were clearly worn out. I even had to call the service manager over because the points system started messing up and the lane kept putting the bar down in front of the bowling pins. Several times he tried to reset it to no avail. We were only able to complete 2 games. but the experience overall was horrific. I expected more from a declared bowling alley that also featured live bands. I was just give me this location of significant upgrade, if you're going to be successful as a bowling company. I didn't see the need to pay that kind of money if I was going to be unable to complete the games or get a decent ball.

Yelp
The food, the food the food... was absolutely amazing. This was my first time here since being in it's new location. And everything was wonderful. I see why there was a line waiting to get in when I was leaving at 10pm. Our company had our annual christmas party here and they didn't skip a beat. The food kept rolling out hot and fresh. OMG that crawfish etouffee was so delicious. TBH everything was good. The staff/bartenders were a doll. They didn't miss with the drinks. The lanes was very clinic. My only con was that I wish the score was on the TV's. We kept having to look at the small screen to see who's turn was it next. But other than that, I have already planned date night with my fiance.

Yelp
We attended a company event here on May 10 from about 4:30pm to 7:30pm. We had a great time. I cannot comment on anything to do with price, as it was a company paid event. I love the decor and style of this place. It had a great, welcoming feel to it with lots of interesting decor and old-style "looking" lanes. The bar service was great. The catered food/appetizers were excellent as well. Overall, a super time. The staff seemed to be on the up and up as well. No band while we were here; however, lots of music and a wide open dance floor. There were other guests here with us at this time, so we did not rent out the entire venue and we still had a great time and felt we had plenty of space. The only downside is the bowling scoring. The scoring is shown on tablets at the lanes instead of on tv monitors overhead. It makes it very difficult to easily keep track of the score. In addition, once the game is over, you can't easily scroll up and down to see who actually won the game. I just wish the scoring system would be improved somewhat. Great time! Had fun!

Yelp
Mix genres of music weekly, something for everyone! Party and bowling would be better!
google avatar

Madalyn T.

Yelp
Bad customer service! It was so loud and I couldn't hear the lady and she had an attitude with me, so I took my money out of her hand and said never mind. I also had 2 lanes reserved for 9 that they gave away alll on my birthday. I recommend bowlero in Kenner, such a better environment and better workers.
google avatar

Noodle T.

Yelp
Ok, so boom, Friday nights they have a live band with a $10 cover charge. No biggie! That was neat to have a live band. I wonder if its differentbands opr the same band. Yall address says "Gert Town" well that's wrong, the place is in "Hollygrove". That's neither here nor there tho. The drinks were good. They didn't have any pluckers or anything to mix a drink with unless you like juice or soda with it. The establishment is big in the inside. I think it had 18 lanes might be 20 but no more than that. The food could use some more items on the menu. The fries and hot sausage sandwich was good. I really wanted the chicken, I assumed they had hot wings but nope just friend chicken with ranch. The crowd was young wild ppl so that's a plus for me. Would I return, yep! Only think I didn't like was the score on those small screens and the same thing on every tv. Didn't get any pics. Maybe next time

Yelp
I really miss the old Rock n Bowl. This one is good on the Rock. But the Bowl is just not really there. We came for a group party. We paid $50 a head for 2.5 hours of bowling, plus food and drinks, and a band. The food was good. The beer was cold. And the band was okay. But The bowling was terrible. We maybe played for 45 minutes, because the lane broke town about 5 times. Nobody could fix it, and they ended up calling in a mechanic...but we had already turned in our shoes and gave up. I like this place, and I like the owner. But it just seems like another typical New Orleans place that just doesn't work the way it should. Pay a high cost and have just a mediocre time. I know I'll be back because I love the nostalgia. But unfortunately it is all these NOLA places have anymore.
google avatar

Nina O.

Yelp
We had a great time at Rock n bowl Friday. A spacious venue with good bar service and great live bands. This week we were lucky enough to see The Rough Krewe and they didn't disappoint. If you ever get the chance to see them dont miss out.
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
A bar that doesn't have coffee - why? Live music and bowling, but you can't get an Irish Coffee...

Lana C.

Yelp
My family and I came in New Year's eve excited to bowl until we encountered a very rude hostess who immediately gave us a raised admission price we called and asked about earlier that day, which had us blindsided. On top of that, we had a very unwelcome greeting into the building. there was no "hello" "happy new years" or anything remotely close to welcoming. We ended up leaving and fortunately Ye Olde College Inn took us in as refugee.
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
Very disappointed in our Saturday night Father's Day experience. We made reservations to bowl on two lanes. There's a band of course later in the evening. Nobody informed us that we still had to pay a cover charge despite already booking lanes. No discount offered for bowlers with reservations? Idiotic. In addition, bowling is TIMED? Really? So if members of our family/group arrive at different times the clock shuts down the alley in exactly 60 min anyway?Complete rip-off!
google avatar

Germaine D.

Yelp
What a rip off! Reserved two lanes and still was told that everyone in our party had to pay a 15 dollar cover charge. And to top it off, the games went dead before we could even finish one game! Rock n Bowl is a complete scam!!! If you are there to bowl, you should NOT have to pay the full cover just to walk in the door. And the person collecting money was very rude and unprofessional.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Rude service and huge cover for a band that starts hours after you arrive. Don't waste your time.
google avatar

Samuel M.

Yelp
I suggest this place because it has a really awesome feel to it. Too awesome, maybe, because every time I call to ask if lanes are open...the space is booked for a private event or there aren't open lanes. I suggest calling days before and making sure there isn't a private party on the day you want to go.

Yelp
This place is becoming one of my go-to spots when in New Orleans. A great slice of local life. We came on a Sunday evening when they had a really good Zydeco band. It was a nice atmosphere with families and groups celebrating birthdays, bowling and dancing, and a few regulars spreading their love of dance with any willing partners on the big dance floor with an old fashioned mirrored ball shimmering lights everywhere. We hadn't eaten before we came so we were glad for the food that was available. Mostly bar type shareables but they were very good and quite plentiful - we couldn't eat all of the half sheet of delicious pizza and big basket of boudin and dip. The drinks are reasonable too. They are served in plastic cups which is understandable since there is a lot of activity here. A nice escape from the french quarter craziness but still lots of fun. Great music.
google avatar

Charlyn Q.

Yelp
Great place nice service from the food place. Didn't get to bowl tho because they were busy
google avatar

Niki W.

Yelp
The scoring system is HORRENDOUS. You used to be able to correct issues at your lane. Not anymore. Four frames in and five trips to the front desk. Ridiculous. I had to ask to move lanes. I had to request to restart our time. Balls are all chipped up. Constant lane issues. And the other reviewer that posted about being on lanes 15 and 16 and them being warped...yup...was my exact experience. Ball was constantly in the left gutter. I couldn't figure it out. Months later, they've done nothing about it. A ton of frustration, the worst "bowling" game of my life, and $30 later, we left. I can't see ever going back unless I'm going to a party and couldn't care less about the bowling. I'm sad.

Melissa B.

Yelp
worst treatment I have ever seen towards a group of customers enjoying a birthday party. this includes the owner and all the bartender the arrogance and special favoritism used was poor 101 business then to get kicked out was the icing on the cake.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I would not recommend bowling here. If you do bowl here, DO NOT, by any means, EVER bring your own bowling ball!! After bowling ONE frame with two of my own balls, the balls didn't return. After asking the front desk multiple times for a ball return, I finally received them 30 minutes later. As soon as the balls returned, I noticed that both of them were severely damaged and had HUGE chips and gashes on them due to being stuck in the ball return for so long. When I spoke to the manager about this, the response was "Surely our lanes didn't cause this...We are not responsible for damages...You shouldn't have brought your own ball...," etc. The manager even had the nerve to tell me that I was causing a disturbance to his other customers, and that I should just leave... The manager should have realized that the cost of repair is worth creating a satisfied customer, rather than turning away business. I would highly recommend choosing another bowling alley!!

Yelp
Rock n Bowl is always a good time. Today we got there early to bowl with friends. It was about 11:00 and there were plenty of available lanes. We ordered some fried mozzarella sticks and wings to nosh on while we bowled. They were delivered to our lane pretty quickly, and made the perfect snack. We bowled - some of us rather poorly - yes, I'm talking about myself - and laughed like hyenas at our collective lack of talent. My husband of course beat my score and gloated. If only he realized that I suck and beating me isn't some big accomplishment. Ah, but I digress. The service was great, everything was super clean, and we had a great time. PS - I've always enjoyed coming to Rock n Bowl for concerts too.

Bryan Scott W.

Yelp
Horrible food. Everything fried tasted like old fish sticks. Boudin balls fried cheese sticks and jambalaya were awful. Very disappointed that I had to throw everything in the trash
google avatar

RuthMarie S.

Yelp
Great place to listen to live music bowl drink eat dance and just have fun Every day the music venues change Very good variety. Come on out and see for yourself. Worth the trip Birthdays weddings celebrations too

Emily B.

Yelp
We've used this company for years for a large group (over 100 people every time) so we rent all lanes and have the buffet. This year they: -double booked us after I called to confirm the week prior. we had to wait 45 mins for two of the lanes and then they just decided to keep on renting out another (all were needed for what we booked) Additionally, another one of the lanes was broken. So a significant portion of our group could not bowl for nearly half of our contracted rental time. When I discussed my concerns with the manager, he could "not get in contact with anyone to help us" - so essentially he did absolutely nothing to right the wrong (aka customer service). When he did get in contact with someone, he said that when you rent out rock n bowl, it's for the food and bowling is complimentary ... at a bowling alley. So we paid for a buffet with burnt pizza and some cheese sticks essentially. Additionally, they then proceeded to turn off the lanes prior to our scheduled end time that started way past the contracted time. - they had one set of tables as the buffet for over 100 guests. - when they noticed that something was not being eaten - they brought out more of that option rather than what was actually being eaten to deter food consumption. All in all In a group of over 100, we had part of a tray of jambalaya, ~4-5 pizzas and some cheese sticks. - bowling balls severely damaged to the point they are nearly not spherical - gave them time to reach out after the event as loyal customers, and I am disappointed to say, to no avail. Used to be great, but this year was substantially lacking.

Aimee C.

Yelp
Music was amazing. The bartenders are not allowed to give free water which is dangerous for drinking and driving. It's water. The chocolate cake was a sliver and $10.....One of the managers was super rude most of the wait staff was really sweet. The red beans and rice were amazing....
google avatar

Nick L.

Yelp
Came in for some fun with family and had just that! The chicken wings are really good, and the cheese Pizza Hut the spot crispy edges and cheesy cheese pizza. The bartender was friendly and so was the young lady handing out bowling shoes .
google avatar

Alexander W.

Yelp
Unfriendly staff, environment is the definition of mediocre. Fulton alley is worth it. Rock n bowl, not so much.
google avatar

Terry L.

Yelp
I like it Fun ambiance. Fun people Cool lights and new twist to an old and dying American pastime This is for the young crowd who wants fun dancing and bowling if you're into that too

Alvar J.

Yelp
Zydeco on Thursdays. It's always there, never fails to entertain. Consistency is key with a place like this. John Blancher is a smart cookie. Keep it going
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Nice environment lovely people little crowded but super relaxing and enjoyable with friends family lover etc!

Suzanne F.

Yelp
We came after 7:00 and had to pay a cover to bowl. The band was supposed to start at 8:00 but didn't start until after 9:00. We didn't even get the hear the band while we bowled. Also my daughter brought her own bowling balls to use and they got chipped. DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN BOWLING BALLS! Also, the lanes were not oiled so it is a place to bowl for people with little bowling experience. Not worth the money.
google avatar

helen g.

Yelp
Very unfriendly stopped to ask about bowling after reading some other reviews I think it may have been because my family is of mixed race . Definitely won't go here

Evan H.

Yelp
Stupid lady at the front requesting a 10 dollar entrance fee, but absolutely nothing says you have to pay that until you get there. We arrived and she wasn't even there so we walked past and got our name down for a lane, once they opened. We went to go get food in the meantime and then showed up and the stupid lady was there being rude and nagging. Don't recommend, bowling is probably good, but staff is ass.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Neat concept. Very large space. There are lots of things happening each night. This was recommended to us by many of the locals. People were dancing, bowling and just having a good time. Good vibes here. Very good for large groups or families.
google avatar

Michelle Q.

Yelp
This place is super fun! I had a blast bowling there for a company party. The lanes are well oiled for bowling. The bowling alley itself is very clean. The food is delicious! I loved the shrimp remoulade and chicken Alfredo pasta. The fried seafood is good too. I got to taste the fried fish. Delicious! The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had problems with our bowling lane. The staff tried to fix it, but no success. They quickly moved us to another lane. The music playing on their speakers was really good. We also got to line dance on their dance floor. Super fun! I can't wait to go again and see a live band play.
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
Rock 'n Bowl is a New Orleans institution that I should visit more often. I love seeing bands here and I always have a good time rocking the night away. Yes, there is actual bowling but I have only ever been to see the bands and hang out and have a drink. There is live music every night and lots of space to dance, if that's your thing. If you get hungry, they have typical bar food like burgers and fries and things like that. Staff has always been fast and friendly whenever I've been here and the sound system is actually pretty good.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
I had a great time at the Rock N Bowl with my organization who rented out the entire place for a couple of hours in August 2017. They assisted our organizers by helping us book a Grammy-nominated zydeco band to play while we bowled, ate, drank, and socialized. Their dance floor was definitely under-utilized by our large group, but the music was amazing. All of the staff I interacted with were quite friendly and the epitome of Southern Hospitality. Everything was ready for us once we arrived in our tour busses. There really wasn't much waiting time overall between getting shoes, a lane, and food and drinks. We had some technical difficulties with the lanes though and the food was less than desired. Typical greasy bar food and a sad attempt at salad. At least we had free beer!
google avatar

Anthony T.

Yelp
Rock n bowl has been around for ages and has been a good party spot for big groups as i've only come here for big parties. They are usually pretty good with parties catering food, but don't expect the lanes to be superb.. the lanes are super dry, so don't expect to bring in your personal ball and score some big games. I've never had a chance to come in and bowl independently because of hearing how high the price is to rent a lane, so that always steered me away. Draft beer is served in little 10oz cups about $5 a piece, so make sure you have plenty of cash on you if you're planning to drink the night away. Also. They have nightly live bands playing which gets the crowd going for the nighttime.
google avatar

Helene S.

Yelp
Great fun bowling with family during graduation weekend. $24 for a lane and shoes for our family-during Friday before noon.
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
Went to Rock n Bowl for the first time in maybe a decade for zydeco night. Totally worth $10!!! The music is superb, the place is huge so it isn't that crowded, and it's fun to watch the people who dance (they're good and know what they're doing!) Huge age range and some people bring kids. Not a ton of seating so be prepared to stand up. Bowling is $26 for a lane and it took about an hour for a lane to free up. It isn't the cleanest or the nicest venue but I had a blast and would go back!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
We had a great time!! Bowling and live music should be somewhere in every state! We wished so much that they would have this were we live. We got to hear 3 Great Different Performers, each with their own sound for $25 per person, it was a great way the Finish Jazz Fest Weekend and I'm sure it will be our favorite new tradition for years to come. Bowling costs were pretty normal, a hourly rate to bowl on a lane, costs for shoe rental was fairly standard and if you forget socks they are $2a pair. There is food there prices are pretty good and the food is too.

Kalle A.

Yelp
I went with my girlfriend and two of our friends to bowl. We got there at 530 and reserved a lane for 630 as there was a group having a Halloween party there. No big deal. We ordered food, a pizza, chicken tenders, and chicken wings. The tenders were tiny and the wings were weird. The pizza was like enhanced school cafeteria pizza. But whatever, we just wanted to bowl. 645 comes around and we are confused as to why we haven't received a text for our reservation. When we asked about it, the worker literally said "it'll be 730". We asked why, since she said 630 earlier. "Oh yeah... we messed up. A lady reserved the lanes and we didn't think she would show and she's here". Like what lol so you weren't going to let us know? Overall, terrible experience. Even though I literally live on Carrollton and Claiborne I will drive the extra 15 minutes to Harahan next time I have the crazy thought of wanting to go bowl with the homies
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Rock n Bowl never lets you down. With Rockin Dopsie Jr entertaining, a well behaved bunch on the dance floor, folks in their 20's to their 70's, this is a great venue for traditional live music and good food and adult beverages. and don't forget the bowling! Bring a gang - there's room for everyone!
google avatar

Phuong N.

Yelp
My first time here and I love it! The price for bowling that day was $27 so we split it among three of us and had so much fun. The workers were so friendly on my visit. The live band was awesome. I like it that you can enjoy bowling and still enjoy the live music and that there is an area you can also dance to the music. I would have gave it a 5 but I have one complaint. I fell while bowling bc the floor were too waxed
google avatar

Jordanna E.

Yelp
Great place to go with the family. Kids can bowl or play video games while parents enjoy live music and delicious drinks. Food was typical bowling alley food with a New Orleans twist. Had my first order of Bordin bites. At least I think that's what they were called. Sausage and rice fried and served with a yummy hot sauce.

Yelp
I would rate this establishment a 0 if I could but that is not an option. Anywho, this place is very unprofessional and rude to paying customers. My friends and I went for a birthday and we decided to get some shots. One of my friends gave her ID but was told it was fake and she knew it was fake because she's "had her fair share of fake ID's". This was not a fake ID at all, she is from Texas and it could have been easily verified if they had the equipment to do so. The kicker is that someone else from our group came to get a drink and she was not ID'd at all. Sounds a bit fishy and unorganized. Please don't go to this mediocre establishment.
