Delicious fish and chips here! Seriously some of the best I've had, although it is very pricey... I sat outside under the cover and the atmosphere was really good! Super nice place to sit and eat, it's quite peaceful of an evening. The staff are super friendly and helpful too. I went for the scampi as it's a favourite of mine and it was really very good. The meat inside was on the small side to be honest but they were very tasty! The tartare sauce was fantastic, a really nice taste of dill and super creamy too. The chips were perfect. Super nice chip shop style chips but weren't greasy and didn't taste burned or undercooked. I will be visiting again at some point for sure!

Good quality piece of fish, that’s for sure. Fresh fish not greasy that’s all. Great starter sharing platter though. But is it worth the hype, is it worth the queue, lastly is it worth the price? No. Definitely not. I’ve tried better fish and chips with more than half the price for what I paid today. You’re paying for location and history.

Fantastic fish and Appetizers. The kids weren’t a big fan of the chips but they are too accustomed to McDonald’s chips so what can you do. I thought they were fine.

Had lunch here with my wife, food was excellent. Great fish & chips, service was professional and welcoming and the arrived in quickly. The nice things is you can actually see the chefs prepare your meal. I recommend having a meal there anytime.

Honestly probably the worst fish & chips I’ve ever had - total tourist trap banking on its supposed “heritage”. Firstly, whilst everything looked good, the fish was so oily that it was just mushy in the mouth. Absolutely no texture or solid form remaining. It felt like the fish was put in a blender, reformed into some kind of clump and then fried for 100 years. Secondly, these chips are pretty bad. I guess it’s their own take on chips? In any case, they were like the chips you get from a cheap Chinese takeaway…except worse. Service was nice and polite but then tarnished by the fact it took over 20 minutes for anything to arrive and they forgot our drinks completely! Wow. I won’t be returning and I strongly suggest you don’t go here. I saw a lot of tourists. If you’re a tourist, please understand that this is not what fish & chips should be. 😩 To top it all off, it was expensive!

The fish taste is fine and light with the tartar sauce but the chips and the price is not worth it. £21 for a regular cod fish and chips is silly. Felt robbed, honestly would’ve been better for flavor and quality with a simple doner kebab for £8 instead.

One of the best fish & chips I have eaten… had the haddock £24, cod loin £21 and calamari £8 for sides. We shared 2 mains, a side and a dessert for a family of 4. everything was fresh, batter was not oily yet fresh & crispy, even tartare sauce was freshly made. Calamari side was nice but was different to what I was used to. For dessert, we shared a sticky toffee pudding. Was yummy despite it being a frozen heated up dessert. Ended up being a complimentary freebie which was a nice ending for a great dinner. If fish &chips is on your must eat list in London, this is worth it. Service was excellent - one of the restaurants that made a great meal excellent due to the service. We sat outside under a heater and was comfortable in the cold. Expect to spend £30-£35 per person. We snacked all day so ended up sharing. The large portion is a hearty meal for one and could be shared with 2 kids.

I visit rock and sole every time I'm in London. It's always delicious. I usually get the plaice and chips with gluten free breading, which is quite good, though I've also had other fish and chips and that too works for me. It's a very friendly place. Most of the servers are very nice and accommodating. I only had one crabby person. serve me in all the many times I've been there., which is a pretty good thing! I always sit outside because that's where the best people watching can be had.

Saw the review in YouTube. This restaurant was located close to the British Museum. Fishes were very crispy but French fries were little too soft. Love the appetizer sampler.

A classic fish & chips spot that seems to have been in place for hundreds of years. The haddock was good, perfectly crispy and went nicely will their dill heavy tartar sauce. The chips were alright, could've had a bit more texture to them but were solid nonetheless. Overall this place was worth a try but is on the pricier side for fish and chips.

This is the oldest Fish and Chips restaurant in London. It was a very cute place to take the family. We ate outside and had fish and chips. We also had an order of chicken. All of it was deep fried and wonderful. The chips were also amazing. When we arrived, shortly after 5pm, the place was already packed. They also do a very brisk take-out business, so there is a lot of activity out front. The servers were amazing, and she took care of all our needs. Food arrived quickly and exactly as ordered and we all had a wonderful dinner. It was really a great representation of British Fish and Chips. I would most definitely go back.

Steady fish and chips joint in Enfield. Definitely, not the Best in the city of London, as they claim, however not bad. We waited forever to get our food. Not sure what was up with that as it was not busy at all. The sampler starter, in my opinion, was a bit tastier than the cod fish and chips. Not bad, but I recommend Poppies or Fish Works on Regent St. for better tasting and more authentic Fish and Chips.

i was lied to by google reviews. the 3,000+ reviews averaging a 4.2 star rating for this establishment was promising, which is why i chose rock and fish plaice for my introductory fish and chips meal in london. although the fish was fresh and battered well, the cod filet and chips had scant seasoning (like salt literally left the room) and the chips were cooked unevenly. some were hard, more starchy and some soft and fluffy; i want consistency please. £2 for a side of 5 pickle slices is also just... why? like why isn't it free i don't understand ): the service was okay, food took a while though and we sat outside. ambiance was very traditional, casual and had cute decor although didn't get the full interior dining experience since we'd dined outside. i'm pretty disappointed and won't be coming back because i'm adamantly sure that this isn't the best spot to grab fish and chips.

The food, phenomenal, the service, attentive, the price, affordable! I know some people called this place a tourist trap but we tourist had an amazing visit here this past week. We had a group of 3 who didn't have a reservation but we're able to get a seat relatively quickly. Our servers were super quick and answered all of our questions. We got a large haddock and chips and a regular cod and chips. Both were fantastic, huge portions and super crunchy/juicy. We also got the sample platter and the hummus and chips as well. Definitely a must have for me.

This is a full and delicious fish and chips restaurant that I was recommended. The service and food was delicious. I ordered the regular size and the fish was delicious. I sat outside with heaters on, however the main restaurant was so vintage and vibrant. Go visit, I had my late lunch /early dinner at 3pm. Support this small business.

My husband and I went to London for our honeymoon and we wanted to try Londons staple fish & chips! We were so excited but we left saddened given that the fish did not have much flavor and the fries were dry and did not have seasoning. The service was great though our waitress was awesome! The restaurant is also in a great area where there are shops! Definitely glad I got to try this staple here even though it was not what I had expected!

Had came here for dinner on a recent trip to London (Nov 2022), on a Monday evening. I don't recall where I saw this as a recommendation but I had saved this place as a place to try as one of UK's things to try (fish & chips). Rock & Sole Plaice is located in Covent Garden, conveniently, it was almost a straight across walk from my hotel in Waterloo, across the bridge and straight up to this restaurant. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The weather was coincidentally pretty nice so we opted to sit outside, as we never really had the chance during this entire trip. Outside seating has a nice big covering so if in cases it does rain, you are covered (it did sprinkle later on) They have about 6 different fish options available along with calamari, wholetail scampi and king prawns. Had asked the waiter what the most original/traditional fish was and he recommended cod, so we each got a large cod (about £25 if i remember correctly) with a London Bohemia Lager. Food didn't take long to show up and the fish was HUGEEEE !!! Probably give or take 12in/30cm at its longest ! Fish was PIPING HOT and fresh and delicious. They give you a small cup of tartar sauce which isn't enough but they are happy to give you more if needed. Beer was definitely a great addition. The chips were a little dense and not as crispy as expected on the outside nor as soft on the inside but the fish was definitely the main star. Service is friendly and quick. Would recommend !

Sat outside. Was clean and comfortable. Tables were clean which isn't always the case with outside seating. Food was fresh and hot. I didn't care for the fried cheese because it was very bitter but I don't have a very sophisticated palate. My friend with me liked it very much. The potato pie was very good. The server was friendly. Recommend.

We came here 3 days in a row and was finally able to have some fish and chip on the 3rd day. 1st day we came restaurant was closed due to Queen Elizabeth's funeral. 2nd day the restaurant sold out by 7 pm ( thy open till 11 pm). 3rd day was the charm and I'm glad we persisted. The staff were friendly and service was quick. The fish was fried to perfection and very fresh. The coating was crunchy even after the fish had sat a while. It didn't have the greasy taste to it at all. The garlic shrimps were good. I personally didn't care for the calamari though. This was a recommendation from a tour guide. Glad we gave it a try.

Old school Londoner's place with a variety of fish shrimp calamari and sausage options. Great taste, fast service and fresh options. Apparently this is the Londoners place to eat fish and chips as advised by an actual "London expert" advisor at a fancy Shard view experience. Some may comment that the chips are not a triple fried but I loved the puffy, leathery, crispy combo. It is skin-on but did not taste fishy. Taste was impeccable. Enjoyed this gem thoroughly.

I went here for a bite to eat whist on a trip.The best service ever. I ordered the battered sausage and chips 10/10 it tasted like a dream and its also the oldest fish and chip shop! the painting on the bottom floor were amazing. its a cute little place to go with friend and family. definitely would recommend!!

The Secret New England Larry's Special Fish sandwich. The servers are excited to make this off the menu item for you without any fuss, only if you asked for it correctly. Be patient, you may have to ask for multiple times due to its secret status. It is a local tradition to ask up to three to five times for the special sandwich even though the server will tell you it does not exist. Don't worry you're not really upset... it's just part of the tradition. "Please may I have the Secret New England Larry's special fish sandwich....""whisper" it's on the secret menu " Be patient, Sometimes the servers cannot hear you whisper.... It is completely worth the wait, just keep asking. A five star sandwich at two to star prices. Please don't be discouraged. Once in a lifetime experience.

Unfortunately, I would say it was a tourist trap. Our hotel recommended it and we went with it. Located in a very quaint area. The restaurant itself was great, very clean, lot's of nice tables outside. The food however, not so great. I've had better fish and chips in random US places. The fish was completely lacking any seasoning. The chips, worst I've had in my life. Mushy and pale. Overall, I would think you can do better in London.

My family and I wanted to try authentic fish and chips during our stay in London, and this place was recommended by our taxi driver. They had a variety of different fish to chose from, but we went with the classic cod. The fish was fried perfectly, the tartar sauce was incredible, and the chips were delicious. Would recommend this place to any tourist in London!

Service was quick and the turn around is fast. Fish was so hot when cut into it. They did not disappoint. I would return to try other dishes on the menu.

What a great little place to experience the rapidly disappearing old British chippy for great, simple fish and chips. The food is well prepared, the service is pleasant. The ambiance is not much -- a few small tables with the open kitchen (and a separate downstairs seating area). Expensive but on par with other restaurants in London. If you are in the Covent Garden / Leicester Square / Soho area, you should give this place a try for a delicious old-time fish and chips experience.

Food is actually pretty good, Although the cashier was the guy that ruined this review. We planned to come about an hour and 30 minutes before their closing time and were informed when we were in line that they were closed for seating but is allowing takeout . Me and my girlfriend were fine with this, although the cashier just gave us the worst attitude. We asked for an order of the steak and ale pie but he told us "we're out" so we decided to get the chicken pie instead. As he came back with the pie and chips we ordered, I asked "can i also get the cod and chips", he said "you are supposed to tell me before I go and get your other order because this is gonna take 10 minutes to prepare". We are from a different country, but honestly, the way his tone sounded was similar to a little boy who gets annoyed with his parents after not getting what he wants. And, also how are we supposed to know this? No signs say anything. The cook turns around and says don't worry we have one already cooked. He sighs and puts the food away in to go boxes and doesn't even acknowledge the way he acted. Very poor mannerisms from a guy who works in a restaurant. Really wish this wasn't the experience from one of London's lasting businesses from the 1800s, but it was definitely terrible service! I usually don't write reviews, but this service was actually bad.

One of the many restaurants in Covent Garden but certainly not with the best fish and chips you can find. Haddock was our choice of fish after our server said it's similar to a cod. It was flaky and moist enough with a subtle crisp golden breading. A regular for £14.50 is plenty for one person which is a good thing considering the price tag but I was so disappointed with the chips being soggy. I also thought the Beef and Onion Pie (£7.50) was just decent and forgettable. Maybe they can do better with dessert? We ordered Banana Fritters (£4) to share and when asked if we wanted it with ice cream, we couldn't say no. I thought she meant "a la mode" but instead, we were given a whole bowl of grocery-bought ice cream with 4 mini scoops on the side. The annoying part? We got the bill and was charged extra (£5) for it. Ugh. I hate servers who up-sell. What's worse, she even added an automatic 10% service fee. Wow. And no free Wi-Fi in this tourist trap.

V close to Seven Dials, nice sit down restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly service. I got the cod and chips to share, sparkling water and beer. A little pricy but worth it.

My local friend from London recommended this place and I was super happy I went. The fish and chips were fantastic! The beef pie was a little dry and mediocre. I would definitely come back for the fish and chips! The service was great. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

A sign on the wall inside by the counter notes they've been making fish & chips for 140 years, setting my expectations high! I stumbled in around 7pm after an incredibly long travel day. I asked for table service (as you do in the U.K.,) and was immediately guided to a table. Food: I asked for the large haddock meal with chips, and was told they were out, but had the regular size, which I went with. I was curious how big a large fish was going to be :-) The plate that arrived was more than enough for one. The fish was fresh and cooked perfectly, with a crunchy and crisp batter. It's deep fried, so expect a little grease, which was minimal considering. Chips were not as crispy as the fish, but decent. Tartar sauce comes on the side in a little plastic container. It was delicious, but the portion could be bigger considering the size of fish. There are mayo and tomato sauce packets provided on the table. Service: Efficient, and they turn tables quickly. The fish was served within a few minutes, and the drink showed up a few moments later. Cost: Bit on the high side, but it's central London. A regular haddock and Fanta Orange ran me £19.50. Table service does cost about £2 more than take out. Overall: Fresh and well cooked fish. Lots of seating, even for the solo traveler. Restrooms for customers only.

Just left there right now to grab some fish and chips. I didn't know I can't sit there if I take food to go. For some reason, you can't eat there if you take food to go. Boooooo Also, I wanted to order skate fish and they didn't have any cooked. Told me 15 mins or so. So of course, I said give me what you got.

Overall we had nice fish and chips meals. Our server was unexperienced (trainee?) and slow in getting water & napkins. Will we be back? Yes if we are in the area.

Some of the best fish and chips I've had anywhere--the Rock & Sole lived up to its reputation! The restaurant is a tiny place, with limited seating indoors, a nice sidewalk cafe, and take-out pricing and options. The indoor seating is cozy--you may need to ask a neighboring table to move so you can get in and out--but that's part of the fun of the place. I got to know a couple of strangers as we all enjoyed our meals. The cod was flaky, the batter was not too thick, and the meal was great. The price was fair for a delicious and filling meal--16.50(GBP) or roughly $20 USD at going rates. Don't make the same mistake I did and forget to order the mushy peas!

What a great find! We were walking from Covent Garden to the Shaftesbury Theatre for Motown the Musical and stumbled across this little gem. NOTE there are many more tables than meets the eye when you walk in, and don't be distracted by all the people getting takeaway meals - they have table service and a full bar. Mrs G ordered plaice and chips whereas I had rock fish. We both loved our meals and the service was great. For my American friends - try rock fish when you see it over here in the UK. Delicious and last night was no exception - their oil is very fresh and the fish too! Yummy!! Rock fish is any small shark that they catch off the coast of the UK. Hence - none of the annoying small bones in all other fish. It has a flaky but slightly meaty consistency, white and a wonderful delicate flavor - in my case souses in malt vinegar the way we Brits love it. Yes we will be back soon!!

My first stop in London was for some Fish and Chips! Small little fish shop. A few tables. Not crowded but this location is popular with locals and tourist. Service was good. Food is made to order. Large Cod Loin - 16.50 GBP - Huge piece of cod fried to perfection. Moist flakey meat. Batter was thick and crispy. Great alone, with vinegar, and with the tartare sauce. Comes with chips which were nothing special, soggy (I like soggy though), and a bit bland. Caution, fish comes out pipping hot!

1. Service - waiters were attentive, but can be friendlier. They didn't seem to be as welcoming as I am use to at other places. It's A-La-Carte, so you wait to be seated, order and pay at the table. 2. Price - affordable and it's a big bang for the buck. The food portion is a lot for just one person. 3. Ambiance - there are outdoor and indoor seatings. Depending on the season, one or the other may be more preferred. We went there during the summer, so we had outdoor seatings. The ambiance is quite nice. A good place for a date. Dress code here is casual. I rather have my own table though. We were arranged to sit with strangers. I guess they wanted to maximize their seatings, but the tables weren't full at the hour we were there. A little awkward. 4. Food - we were so hyped up because this was our first British Fish and Chips experience. It was very bland and we weren't impressed at all. The chips were too fried. 5. Cleanliness -I didn't observe anything bad. It felt clean.

Avoid at all costs. Extremely rude "owner" came out after we were seated and had ordered, and said we couldn't stay because our order (share platter, beer, soft drink) was too small. Food looked pretty dodgy anyway, and there was a strong smell of sewage outside the restaurant. So many great places to eat in this area. Stay away from this one and do better.

Tourist trap. Hyped-up! Made the mistake of ordering the Langostina (scampi) & chips at £18 and frankly, the 20 chicken nuggets at McDonald's (£5) would give your more "meat". I did not take a photo since I felt aghast by what I would call a scam! Those "scampis" were just barely a hint or look of shrimps and 99% batter at £18! Unbelievable! I had it taken out of our bill and the waiter kindly obliged. The fish was just ok and so were the pies. Ironically, the more expensive a fish & chip shop charges, the more untraditionally disappointing their fish taste. Do not recommend. Left a £4 tip nonetheless. By the way, if you opt for table service, tipping is optional. Prices are higher than take-out prices. Therefore, tips are already included in the table-service pricing. Just a thought: I think that this "old" restaurant might have been under new management quite recently. Perhaps, same recipe but different management. Different standards.

The fish is fresh and its fried perfectly fine. Not greasy but crunchy. But theres no flavor to the dish. The fries are thick cut and nothing special either. They should definitely add more seasoning to the fish or batter. Sat in the outdoor seating area which was weird since it's right next to the road with heavy car traffic. It was a beautiful day but not enjoyable sitting/eating right next to traffic.

Fish and chips were such a disappointment. We came here on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was packed. The only fish available was cod (I was hoping to try haddock). A money saving tip is that ordering takeaway gives you a small discount. I came here because it was the cheapest place around to try fish and chips.

My sister and I visited Rock & Sole a couple of months ago when we were in town for work. We were pleasantly surprised with how quickly we were able to be seated. We actually sat in the part of the restaurant that may be considered the overflow or take out area. When we arrived our taxi dropped us off right on the corner and being so hungry we didn't make it past the first door to realize there was entirely different entrance to the restaurant. Anyway, the part we sat in was bright and airy and we enjoyed the large windows to look out on the street and the subway tile decor complete with witty musings including a cool quote about fish and chips inscribed on the wall in the section where we sat. For a starter we decided to share an order of the tempura prawns. One order consists of 3 large king prawns , fried to crispy perfection accompanied by an amazing sweet chili dipping sauce. It was so good and came out so fast we almost ordered another order, however, before we could make up our minds our main entrees were making their way to our table. Of course, when visits a pub known for it's fish and chips that is what we got. We both chose the cod loin which was perfectly fried and delicious. It wasn't fishy at all and wasn't greasy like some fish and chips ice had in the UK before. We also chose the chips (or as we say in America fries ) for our sides. We asked our server for malt vinegar, mayo and hot sauce and went to town! This was truly THE BEST fish and chips I've ever had in the UK and that means it ranks number 1 over about 3 or 4 other restaurants. We also chose to wash it all down with a local ale because hey, when you're eating fish and chips in London, that's what you drink!

We stopped by to have an early dinner before we hit the theater to see Kinky Boots. We were in the area and this is one of the oldest fish and chip establishments in London. We were seated right away outside since we beat the evening rush and promptly ordered the lemon sole, haddock, cod and mushy peas. My friends and I enjoyed the fish and the serving sizes are large. We didn't finish everything but enjoyed the chips as well as the mushy peas. We would plan another visit the next time we're in town. Great service.

I very much enjoyed the fish and chips here. It's not cheap but the service was quick and friendly and the food was good. We shared one plate of fish and chips because the portions are huge. Their fish is apparently locally sourced and sustainable, so you can feel a little better about eating here. It's worth nothing that if you choose to eat in the restaurant versus takeaway, you'll pay more for your meal. I for one welcome the chance to sit down after a long day of sightseeing and it's worth the extra money, but if you are on a budget please beware. You can choose the type of fish that you want, from cod to haddock to sole. The menu is obviously fish-heavy but they do have chicken nuggets for kids. Speaking of kids, if you have any in tow they will want to check out the menu (and inevitably laugh at the "spotted dick" on offer). I like that there's outdoor dining year round (we were wearing our winter coats and munching on crispy fried fish and chips al fresco). Throw in a couple of good beers and you've got yourself a nice evening in London.

The best fish and chips we've found near the West End! The calamari is fantastic too. The staff are always happy and helpful. Sitting outside under the trees is our favorite but they do have indoor seating. It's popular so sometimes there's a short wait but so worth it. We always come back whenever we're in London.

The oldest Fish and Chip shop in London is Rock and Sole Plaice in Covent Garden. There has been a chippy at this location for about 150 years. This is an excellent spot to indulge in this British delicacy when you are hanging out in the West End. My recent meal before catching a show at a nearby theatre perfectly hit the spot. The tender cod loin was lightly fried with an ample assortment of chips. Of course salt and malt vinegar were present on the table to add to the flavour. Though this small spot is pretty popular, in nicer weather there is outdoor seating which greatly helps in getting a table.

There's some rubbish reviews here by Americans who don't understand fish and chips. Just ignore them... I'll drive 2 hours in the US for proper fish and chips, I've visited every one of the Old Speckled Hen Award winners since 2012 and none compare to Rock and Sole Plaice. First off the fry is fantastic- soft crispy with piping hot fish that steams succulent aromas and can be torn apart by hand without falling apart. You get to choose the fish type - sweeter rockfish, mild cod, more robust haddock, others - and each is cooked to perfection. If you don't know the flavor types and textures ask! I like haddock with a good cup of tea and curry sauce but cod if I'm going solo. The chips at RSP are fat and chunky; real potato pieces that give you a variety of textures and tools to sample the peas and pick at the sauces. They're not "French Fries", they're targets for salt and malt vinegar to be used to sandwich fish pieces, salve in curry and make points about life and London. The worlds beauty and challenges always seem more interesting over a good cuppa and real food. Loved talking to the staff about London football, discussing the merits of a back three versus four and the role of high pressure in the modern game. What could be more British and appropriate on a cold afternoon having enjoyed the wonders of the British Museum which is a five minute walk away? Rock and Sole Place has over a hundred years of history and experience and it shows. My favorite fish and chips shop in London and I'll take a 20 minute ride on the Tube because I don't compromise on quality and flavor.

Came here because of the good reviews. Ordered the classic fish and chips with a side of mushy peas. The dish itself was great and very delicious. But the price is seriously way too high. If we wouldn't have been so hungry from the flight, I think I would have chosen another place to eat. Our waiter was nice but they were not very attentive. And some of the waiters didn't look very motivated.. All in all was the food good but wouldn't return again as it was way too pricey!
