Yelp
Came here for friend's bday (we got the 40-person room); seriously lackluster experience but there aren't many karaoke options in CapHill. For ref, I've been to multiple karaoke places worldwide, but this is my first round CapHill.
- Limited song selection -- many songs not available. Only English songs for one (which is fine), but even that selection compared unfavorably to eg Level2 in SF. Granted, they do have some artists other places don't, eg Rise Against. We were also able to find a bunch of pop songs so were at no loss for songs /to play/, which does fit the standard for commercial karaoke.
- Pricey -- $250/hr for 40-person room is higher than what I've paid at /any/ karaoke place (eg Seattle's Orient Express is effectively $6/hr /and/ includes food; places in Austin, SF, NYC also deliver higher value at similar hourly rates)
- Technical limitations: healsonic app wouldn't connect, so need to add song via iPad, can queue up to only 20 songs at a time, low flexibility to skip/re-add songs. My typical karaoke routine is playing the song and skipping after the second chorus to be efficient -- we weren't able to do that here
- Lackluster videos -- it's ugly lyrics, not even videos.
- Acoustics -- kinda weird and highly dependent on how close you are to the stage + your mouth to the mic. Poor volume regulation -- volume can fluctuate/spike lots based on these factors -- my watch recorded 100+ decibels, and we weren't expecting to need ear protection for friend karaoke!
Acoustics in my studio apartment is better. Acoustics on a low-occupancy Seattle bus is even better, from my experience doing acapella in buses.
AMBIENCE - 8/10 -- Cool vibes, great restrooms, albeit crowded. Open bar karaoke is nice. Being next to Cal Anderson Park is fun -- lots of meetups like sports, live music, and dancing within a few blocks!
SERVICE - 8/10 -- Great service, given lots of people to cater to. Accessibility to large water pitchers is a boon!
QUALITY - 4/10 -- Pure-quality standpoint (disregarding logistics), worse than doing karaoke at home / in park with a large screen + bluetooth speakers.
VALUE - 3/10 -- bottom 25% of karaoke experiences
OVERALL - 4/10 -- "Okay" -- would not support /karaoke/ here unless we had /perfectly/ same people num as room capacity, or a good friend painstakingly crafts a bday activity out of it like this instance. Still it's a /sacrifice/ of your time and ears, so have a good "why" ready. I /love/ karaoke, and this is still a raise-your-eyebrows kinda quality. I had a good time as I do most anywhere w friends, but my standardized rating for Rock Box is sing at home instead with your friends!
Calibrated these scores against my last karaoke review (Hi Tunes in Austin which had less songs but better value and idiosyncrasy).
