16 Essential Japanese Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Specialty rolls get the spotlight here, but Rock-n-Sake cooks too. Share a few small plates — gyoza beef dumplings, or scallops in creamy dashi garlic sauce — then move onto entrees. Pan seared chicken and steak get an upgrade with housemade teriyaki, miso-gorgonzola, or Japanese chimichurri sauces, each with a choice of two sides (get the chicken rice)." - Beth D’Addono

The Best Ramen Shops in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Open only at night (except for Friday lunch), Rock-n-Sake offers one ramen bowl on the menu among the sushi, small plates, and sashimi. It’s made with a traditional pork broth and also includes fresh ramen noodles, pork belly, enoki and shiitake mushrooms, kale, and a poached egg. This downtown spot has a informal vibe for ramen slurping, and Rock-n-Sake has several other locations throughout Louisiana." - Eater Staff

Google
I love Rock Sake. It is the best sushi I can find near my house by far. They didn’t have a little mixup on one of our rules and our son was allergic to shellfish so that’s the only reason I gave service three stars instead of five because he couldn’t eat any of the rolls I ordered without shrimp or without snow crab. I also posted he had the allergy, but it was an app and it was overlooked so they were very kind and refunded our card for those rolls. And I’ll be back next time for sure delicious.

Google
Usually I don't give five stars, however this place was just tremendous. Food was great, and the servers were also wonderful.

Google
Loved the apps and the roll I chose, forgot to take photos. The pork belly wraps were so tender and flavorful . The roll I had came with filet, I can’t remember the name but it was really good . The shrimp app was good as well.

First time diners at this location and we really enjoyed it! We went on a Wednesday around 6pm and first thing we noticed were the cars overflowed onto an open lot next door. Seated at the sushi bar (prefer) and the chef was funny and lively, which matched the ambience and music of the place. Our waitress Tori was so sweet and very attentive! The food was fresh and flavorful and not too bad of a wait, nor was it too crowded. I do agree the price point for the size of the roll is a bit high, but you're paying for the experience as well as the food. Wouldn't be a weekly spot, but definitely a great switch up from your regular hum drum dining spot. The garlic salmon roll was rich and flavorful, scallops seasoned very well, and the tempura ice cream was magical!

First visit! The atmosphere was dark with loud music. Upon entry i was greeted by the hostess. She directed me to the bar to place my take out order. The bartender was very patient and helped me determine how many rolls I needed, as I know nothing about sushi and was picking up for a friend. I paid there at the bar, but the seating was limited and the dining area felt inaccessible. I just slowly paced back and forth by the door for about twenty minutes till my food came out. I paid $40 for four crunchy rolls

Google
Everything here is absolutely phenomenal. I recommend sitting up at the sushi bar bc I like watching them make it but anywhere is good. Every single thing you get here is going to make your taste buds orgasms and you might even need a change of pants. If you’re in the area, it is a must try!

A group of 8 of my girl friends drove from hours away to have a fun sit down dinner here together. I have to start by saying the food was phenomenal, but the rest of our experience not so much. We had a reservation for 6:15 PM made at least two months in advance, when we arrived for our reservation, we were asked by the hostess to “please be done by 7:45” Weird right? Well it doesn’t end there, our drinks took at least 20 minutes to come out & then the food another 30 minutes. (They were busy so I get the long wait time) Towards the end of our meal , I proceeded to order another Martini. The waitress told me I could order it, but it was going to be brought out in a plastic cup because the other party was here for the table. Mind you, there’s 7 other people still eating & drinking at the table. She brings the MARTINI out in a plastic cup like she said & then tells us the other party is here so we need to get up. A few of the girls went to the restroom before we went to leave, (they only had one working restroom at the time) in the meantime, they sent over TWO other employees a different times telling us that we needed to get up because the next party was here. NEVER in my life have I been RUSHED out of dinner reservation while still ordering things to the table. Our bill was not small by any means, and we would’ve spent a good amount of more money there hadn’t we been rudely kicked out of our reservation. Again food, was great, but this situation will be enough for me and my friends to never return to an establishment that treats paying customers in this way.

Google
Very happy at the fact that this place stays open till 11pm. The waitress was very nice and attentive! The calamari was very tastey and good, would definitely order again, something I order at any and every restaurant that sells it. I took 1 star away cuz I spent $80 on sushi, something I've never thought i could do (yes it was 2 of us but never before have I even come close to that amount). The sushi did taste good but was not anything extravagant for me to say it was worth $80. And the dessert, I didn't know at all what it was but wanted to taste something new, I was left very disappointed with the presentation and the flavor it being some sort of seaweed wrapped icecream.

Yelp
I love this place! It's an upscale sushi when compared to other near by sushi restaurants. The good news is that they have great food to back it up. While a little more $$$, you do pay for great ambiance, spotless fun modern styled place. The cocktails are also inventive and tasty. So to this place.

Yelp
I have always wanted to try the Sushi King Cake. You need to order in advance as they only offer so many per day. There is a LOT of imitation crab filling. A lot. The king cake is mostly rice and imitation crab. On top there are very thinly sliced pieces of sushi. They were excellent and the sauces amazing. It is a beautiful work of food art. BUT they need more fish (sliced thicker) and not so much imitation crab. For the price, we won't order again.

Yelp
Love Rock-n-Sake! The food is so fresh and the TGIT deal on Tuesdays is a must. I love how the roll of the month and the tiger roll are both options. Will be back!

Yelp
I finally tried this place yesterday. Parking is very very tight. We had to park at a neighboring restaurant and walk over. The wait for inside seating was about 45 min to an hour. Since it is conveniently next to Tana, we went to pre-drink there. Since we agreed to sitting at the sushi bar, we were contacted that a spot was ready and were seated with a total wait time of about 20 minutes. $The 6 Tuesday drink specials were great. I wasn't wowed by some of the sushi options but decided to go with the tuna nachos and the Delàroll that has filet mignon. Both were a great pic. The chili oil garnishment made for the perfect addition to the Delàroll. The servers were all extremely nice. We stayed well past our time and continued to enjoy the $6 drinks. The only negative part about the experience was that when you sit at the sushi bar, the other servers retrieve food for other tables and takeout orders by constantly reaching over you. They were great about apologizing for it but I can see why this seating area was quicker to become available vs regular seating. The restaurant is a bit noisy so my Apple watch kept alerting me of the noise level, and I found myself having to speak loudly to my friend who accompanied me. But during happy hour, what restaurant is actually quiet? Overall the experience was nice. I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Visited on a weekday, and their parking lot was full. Ended up parking on the street instead. We were seated promptly, as the restaurant wasn't too busy, with plenty of open tables. The food came out in a timely manner as well. We started off with the shrimp wontons (4 pcs), and they were ok. They're similar to crab wontons or crab rangoons but with shrimp instead. For rolls, we had the Voodoo Queen, Salmon Zest, and Margarita. I liked that the ponzu sauces were on the side because they were definitely strong in taste. I think the rolls sounded better on paper than the actual taste. They were mediocre tasting but with a higher price tag. If I had to choose which one tasted the best, it'd be the Voodoo Queen. There were a few other specialty rolls that were curated differently compared to other restaurants, which sounded interesting (e.g., pork belly or tomato in the rolls). The restaurant is actually nice for a date night with outdoor seating available, too.

Yelp
Arrived slightly before 5:30pm when they open on a weeknight and there were cars waiting for the restaurant to open. Filled up quickly. Beautiful space converted from a former gas station. Service was pleasant and quick. Had the tuna nachos which was perfect for two. Than was delicious and a beautiful presentation. The maki warehouse roll was good too. I enjoyed my experience and would go back. They do accommodate rice allergies too.

Yelp
We visited while in town to see our son in college. The ambiance caters to a younger crowd, with loud music that made conversation difficult. However, the food and the cocktails were delicious.

Yelp
I haven't been to this place in months, yet somehow I sit here thinking about the absolute disaster that is Rock-n-Sake Bar & Sushi. I will give them one break because I went on a busy Tuesday. To keep things short, we waited for our food for about an hour and a half (ordered two sushi rolls) and our waitress refilled our waters zero times. It wasn't until I got up and looked at the sushi bar to see our rolls sitting on the bar that we got our food. Waitress seemed very offended that I was curious where our food was after an hour and a half, and was generally unpleasant the whole time we were there. All of this to get some of the most bland sushi I have eaten. One positive on this place is the great ambiance, so if you are into a fun atmosphere with extremely mid sushi then this is the spot for you!

Michelle O.

Yelp
We absolutely love it here the food and atmosphere are incredible. We love seeing our favorite bartenders Sadie and Gabi. BUT...Everytime we come here which we are frequent customers like every week...They never ever have our favorite appetizer, the beef and asparagus!!! I mean if you're going to have it on the menu you should have it most of the time. But I'm telling you they never have it!!!!

Yelp
This place is great, no disrespect to the Fulton St location (which is my usual). The staff is very busy so don't get your feelings hurt if they don't "wait on you hand-and-foot". I try to sit a the sushi bar if I'm solo, so they typically have 1-2 waitresses/waiters that cover the entire sushi bar ... again, just be chill. The food quality is good and lives up to the RnS hype. Check them out if you're in Metairie!

L B.

Yelp
They have such great deals on Tuesdays but be prepared for the crowd. Long wait unless you get there early. Service is great as well.

Yelp
My friends and I had a horrible experience here. Definitely do not celebrate a birthday here because the server (Gabby) will make the birthday girl cry due to her extreme lack of general attitude and remarks. Food took nearly 2 hours after ordering to make it to our table and drinks remained empty the whole time we waited. Very disappointing, will not return. Baton Rouge location is much better if you still want to try food.

Metairie Girl S.

Yelp
We had a date night tonight. Food was great. Bartender Sadie, sorry to say makes really bad drinks! Last two times we were there, Same thing, bad mixed drinks and she was the bartender. Not sure why? The other bartenders seem to have it together. So disappointing tonight to see her as bartender! I'm sorry to post this but she needs to move on to server and stop making drinks.

Billy B.

Yelp
Food last time I went was wonderful. This time however we went on a Friday. A bit busy and the hostess sat us at a table outside. Weather was okay and others were eating out there just fine. So we wait. Waiter walks past us and starts service on 2 other tables while we wait. Thought reservations. Then some people walk up and state they didn't have a reservation and they get sat straight away inside while we are still waiting for menus to order. I ask the waiter and he said "that's not an eating table, that's a waiting table." And proceeds to get angry after I say "why the hell would the hostess sit us here then instead of the wait room inside?" After a bit of back and forth we leave. Try it again later on and the place's food went to .

Yelp
We celebrated my niece's 6th bday here bc she said she wanted sushi. Lol. I like the outdoor seating area...although being so close to the actual road made me a little nervous. Service was friendly and efficient. The fried calamari was delicious! I think I enjoyed this the most. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't see some common offerings on the menu so I went really simple with my order. The sushi tasted fresh. Overall it was an enjoyable meal.
google avatar

Nadiyah S.

Yelp
The location in old Metairie is a way better experience lately. Downtown location has lost is appeal and accuracy on to-go orders. Margarita Roll Upside down roll Triple S roll Garlic salmon roll. Top tier tasty.

Ashleigh M.

Yelp
i usually really love rock n sake, but my experience tonight was horrific. I have never had such bad service. The food took forever and was overall very unimpressive for the price. If you wish to enjoy a good dinner experience, go elsewhere there are much better options in this city.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Great sushi great atmosphere, the lychee Martini comes with a cherry instead of a lychee so that's the only reason I'm giving a 4. Overall love this place ! The voodoo queen roll maybe the best roll I've ever had!
google avatar

Janna J.

Yelp
This was my first time at this location and I was not disappointed. I went with 2 friends. When I arrived at 6:30 I was told an hour wait - something I was prepared for. Our table was ready within 45 minutes. They have a QR code for a digital menu, but will give you a physical menu if you ask for it (and that's what I prefer to look at). We got a few different appetizers and the edamame were pretty standard, but I really liked the sushi deviled eggs and the kale and sashimi salad. That kale was amazing. I got the LSU roll and the Fulton Street Roll. Both were great. The service was great and I like the atmosphere better here than the downtown location. I'll definitely be back.

Jena T.

Yelp
This is the place to get sushi in Metairie. Waitstaff and bartenders are always top notch I am a regular. This place runs well because of its them. Kudos to the staff for always making every guest visit enjoyable.
google avatar

Abi B.

Yelp
The tuna nachos were delicious. Very reasonably priced for sushi. The atmosphere is always fun.

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Waiting over an hour for your meal is unacceptable. Do not try this place. Tana is right next door. Try it!
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Best sushi you'll find in the area. However, be prepared to wait...especially if you're going on a Tuesday. Every Tuesday they sell their "roll of the month" for $6 when you buy a roll of equal or greater value. This months roll was the Margarita Roll (bottom). I was surprised by how delicious it was! My favorite and go-to roll is the Garlic Salmon roll (top). So delicious and filling! We waited over an hour for our table, then about another hour for our food :/ and the music is SO loud. I realize it's called Rock n Sake, but be prepared to scream to speak with whoever you're sitting with. However, I can confidently say that I'd do it again because it was that good.
google avatar

Victoria P.

Yelp
It's definitely a cute vibe in here! Service was insanely slow on a week night! There were 4 chefs behind the sushi bar and several waiters so I'm really not sure what was going on! I originally wanted to order a roll that had mango and was told they were out of mango :( disappointing! I ended up ordering a roll that was wrapped in cucumber but I can't remember the name. It was okay! The drinks were good and the ambiance was right though! I could definitely see myself coming back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Have been to different rock n sake restaurants and it never fails to amaze me. This place will always be recommended by me to people who are looking for date night sushi or happy hour with friends. Their TGIT deals are too good to miss. When I saw the July roll of the month, I just knew I had to try it. I was so excited to get it for $5! I stayed with a $5 lemon drop. That tasted kind of funky....but I drank it anyways. For rolls I got the Triple S and the Red white and Blues roll. Both were SO GOOD!!! If you like spicy in your sushi, the triple S is for you! Literally delicious. The red white and blues was also very very good. They had a generous amount of sauce on top, but I didn't mind!
google avatar

Katlyn S.

Yelp
Love the ambiance in the restaurant, very chill environment with great music. Sydney was my server and she was super helpful with recommendations from the menu. I ordered the tuna nachos, beef tataki, and chicken fried rice. My favorite is definitely the tuna nachos, but everything was amazing!
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
This blond girl at the bar only has the absolute best service. She did let some couple argue at the bar for way to long before encouraging them to leave. She is also way to fast at bringing me drinks. The sushi is great, the drinks are great, and the service is top notch for a sushi bar. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
Best casual Sushi spot in Greater New Orleans, hands down. Appetizers are incredible -- highly recommend the Tuna nachos, but you can't go wrong with any of them. The fish just tastes fresher than anywhere else I've been. Great place for a first date, date night or a night out with a group of friends.
google avatar

Yelp
So, I have dined here numerous times and like the food/restaurant. Last night I sat at the bar (just me). Bartender was super friendly and actually very accommodating when they didn't have the sake I wanted (I got a free glass of another one). HOWEVER, I ordered food and waited and waited. Kindly asked the bartender about the status, and he kept telling me it was "coming out". A manger finally came up to me and said again it'll be out. I said to her it's been about an hour. She rudely said "no it hasn't!". She then checked the computer and came back and said it has only been 38 minutes and that was normal! Plus told me they were understaffed in kitchen in a very rude manner. What ever happened to customer service and treating the customer right?!?
google avatar

Bart B.

Yelp
Never had a bad experience until- They stopped sitting/serving guests last night at 9.
google avatar

Sayge C.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. But there are unfortunately a few issues. First, if you sit at the sushi bar the waitstaff is forced to reach over your head constantly to grab table and to go orders. The music is over the top loud and combined with strange acoustics you cannot talk at all. Best to sit outside. I have been many times and the last was the worst. Also, I have interacted with the same bartender multiple times and he is just awful and rude every time. Last time there I ordered a "skinny" margarita. He handed me a glass with lime juice and tequila. It tasted like sucking on a lime. When I returned it he was pissed and insisted this is how it's made. I didn't want to come off as a total Karen and explain to him that the recipe for a skinny is Fresh lime juice, Fresh orange juice, tequila, Agave nectar, and a slice of lime for garnish. From now on it's to go orders for me.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Happy this location is here, it's much closer than Fulton and a more chill vibe! Although I do love the Fulton one for a night on the town. Everything here is always delicious and some of the freshest sushi. It is a little pricier than most places but I guess you get what you pay for! I love all their rolls, you really can't go wrong with any! My favorite is the upside down roll, worth the price. The tuna nachos are a must and make sure you add avocado and jalapeños
google avatar

Kelsey J.

Yelp
COVID takeout update: Was craving sushi and realized it was Tuesday, so took advantage of Rock n Sake's TGIT special: for every roll you purchase (any $ amount) get a Tiger Roll or their roll of the month (red dragon) for only $5! A steal when both of those rolls are upwards of $15-$20. When we went to order online, mid ordering our food the restaurant shut off online ordering for 45 minutes. Probably because an influx of orders and because of the Tuesday special. When we finally got through, it was already 7:15pm. Our order said it would be ready at 8:15pm, but we didn't actually get it until 8:45pm. So be prepared to wait. They do bring your food out to your car, which is great. People were standing by the front door though and crowding around which is super counterproductive. You standing closer to the door isn't going to make your food come out faster. The rolls themselves were delicious and fresh, as was the Chicken Yakisoba and Shishito Peppers. You can add additional sauces to your order for an up charge. TLDR: be prepared to wait a bit past the estimated time for your order, especially if on a busy day like Tuesday or the weekend!

Yelp
Always the best sushi and best service! Always have the best time and best meal at this particular rock n sake location

Yelp
Love the sushi here. First time trying Deviled eggs with Tuna.. delicious. My favorite roll is the Margarita. It's so like refreshing.. taste buds pop. Fulton roll was also good. Can't remember name of new roll tried, but it was equally as good as Fulton. Only complaint is service isn't the best. Second time in month. Service same, not great. Ordered Sapporo beer, never came back with. Had to ask again.. when he did come back wrong beer. I drank it. Didn't evenIt was a packed house as usual. Food is still overriding.. not so great service. Was with my Bestie so we weren't in a rush anyway. Dinner last night.. sushi still delicious. Service still something to be Desired!

Yelp
Chef's are amazing and product is superb. Will go back many times to enjoy good quality food. I recommend to go to eat.

George A.

Yelp
Arrived at 5 (no one in the restaurant). Music was blaring loud. The flat surfaces that were not for dining are coated in grime and dust. Placed an order of apps, sake and rolls. It took 45 min for an appetizer to come out, the hot Kama. Then the rolls were served on BROKEN plates. One as a chef plating, the food should see that huge safety issue. Second the waitress still saw it and brought it to the table. You wouldn't serve a cocktail in a chipped glass....What happened to serve safe certifications and training? Won't go back. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Menu is ok but not great for the price. Parking is awful and the service could be better. If the food was great I'd just live on their takeout but it's good at best. I feel like it's become more of a place to be seen at than to eat at. But when they opened 15+ years ago, the food was fire. Extra star for nostalgia.
google avatar

Alejandro S.

Yelp
This restaurant was slightly classy with a really nice vibe to the whole place with the modern touch and fine dining. The food was some of the best sushi I've had along with great appetizers and sides. I had one drink and wasn't a huge fan but I think I just picked the wrong drink. Totally will be back again! No doubt about it.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
I never do reviews but this is the best sushi place around! My go to spot anytime I'm craving sushi because its always top grade and consistently great! Overall my favorite thing on the menu is the tuna nachos.
google avatar

Jiwon H.

Yelp
I absolutely agree with the another Yelp's review - I really would not label this restaurant as a traditional Japanese sushi bar. It is rather an Asian fusion but with that being said, it is a nice little establishment with fun ambiance. I do like their innovative and modern twist on the rolls and sashimi plates. To name a few of my favorites : Kale Salmon, Tuna tataki, Tuna Nacho, Margarita Roll, Tuna Rabenda etc... I love their shishito pepper too! Great for a night out on weekends but be sure to make a reservation or get there early as it does get packed all the time. Nice Tuesday Happy Hour deal offerings. I honestly have way too much fun here... that it is dangerous...

Yelp
Rundown: great food, not so great service. We came in on a Wednesday night to find the place poppin'. I love that they have indoor AND outdoor seating but still a cool vibe wherever you're seated. They even had live music by this awesome guy who does violin covers of Top 40 songs. Great atmosphere :) But the service was mehhhh. Our server was nice but was probably inexperienced with being so busy. Our appetizer came out promptly, no issues there. Then for entrees we ordered two sushi rolls and a bowl of ramen. The ramen came out first. Then 5....10.....25 min later, our server comes to take the FINISHED ramen bowl. Then 10 min after that, I had to wave him down for a second glass of wine. At this point he says he'll go check on the sushi because it's been a while. 20 minutes later our sushi rolls arrive. Almost an hour after the first half of our entree came out, we get the second half. I'm not sure if the server thought the ramen was a second app like a soup or a salad. He never asked. Nor did he come to check to see how things were after running/dropping of our food. We did see him busy but even just some eye contact or a thumbs up asking how we were would have been appreciated. So there you are. 4 stars for great food, killer atmosphere, and less than excellent service.

Yelp
One of my husband and I favorite places to go to. We come here 1-2 times a month. The waitress/ waiters are really nice and the food is always so good. They have outdoor seatings which is a plus. Our favorites includes : Pork Belly Lettuce Wraps Spicy hamachi Kale and salmon sashimi Ramen soup

Alyson R.

Yelp
Just so so sushi. The environment was The BuGgEsT drawback- Extremely Loud blaring music..... Couldn't have a decent conversation with anyone at my table. It was not a relaxing enjoyable dinner to say the least. Difficult to read the menu from a QR code on your phone. Service was so so- meal did come out quickly once our meal had been ordered. Ugh....Will NOT be back anytime soon.

Hillary N.

Yelp
Went on a Friday around 6:30pm. Wasn't as busy as i thought. Seated 4 right away. We had the pork belly lettuce wrap, shishito peppers and the Brussels sprouts. All very good. Loved the sauce peppers were cooked in. The pork belly came out like slabs but awesome. Got the voodoo queen roll. Very good. The hot kama was delicious and worth a try. Atmosphere was nice and hip. There is room for a big party in the bar area. Outdoor seating. They have sliding doors to open the inside dining area. The service was good for how busy it got later. Will be back to try other menu items.

Yelp
I dined here last weekend and it was my second time dining at this location. I enjoy the ambience and the wide menu selection at Rock-n-Sake but I have a couple of suggestions. We sat outside to avoid a longer wait and it was rather chilly. It would have been nice if there were heaters on the patio to ensure that their guests are comfortable when the weather is cold especially since their indoor seating area is so small. Also, the outside dining area should have speakers so those eating on the patio can enjoy the music too. Where's the wasabi and ginger!?!? I absolutely love eating ginger with my sushi rolls. All of the rolls that came out as dinner were lacking wasabi and ginger. My cousin ordered a roll as an appetizer which had wasabi and ginger on the plate. I didn't bother to ask the waitress about this because luckily I had taken the ginger from my cousin's appetizer plate. We had been there awhile by this time and as stated before, the temps outside were on the cooler side that night.

Yelp
This place was a real awesome experience. It was nice and clean and I yes I helped out on order to take such innocuous photos. The food was excellent, but in retrospect I should have stayed on my diet.

Yelp
Our server was simply amazing and patient. The food was a 10/10 and drinks ... chefs kiss.

Favorite sushi spot on a Saturday night! Music is on point & food is delicious! Love their Tokyo tinis & tuna nachos! Order the tuna nachos!
