La Casa de Iris Is the Hottest Puerto Rican Street Food Spot in Long Beach | Eater LA

"In the 1970s, Iris Negron began selling her home cooking at Rock of Salvation church in Wilmington and later picked up catering jobs from church members, a grassroots start that helped grow demand for her pollo guisado, mofongo relleno, and rellenos de papa before she stepped back due to health concerns." - Bill Esparza

While I have not been inside the church, I did go to the food bank they hold there. 2 weeks ago was my first time EVER going. It was great, the lady was nice and people boxing up items too. I however was not told you can only go once a month. Fast forward to today (August 23, 2024) I had my disabled child with me. I waited for people to go in line. There was this lady in front of me and they took her ID and handed her a box of food saying, you were here 2 weeks ago, I'll give you the box of food but you can only come once a month" my turn, I hear this so I say "once a month?" Guy replies, once a month. Now my child starts freaking out because he's hungry and I told him we were getting food. That did not happen. I guess if my skin color was a different color it would have been a different outcome given the lady in front of me was spanish. I do have to say thank you to the older gentleman who did give me a carton of eggs and walnuts. It just sucks the guy sitting down acted so indifferent and cold, he claimed to "care" and it supposedly "broke his heart" to turn me and my disabled child down but his body language and tone spoke volumes. It most definitely was not fair they allowed the lady in front of me to have a box of food (she had also gotten stuff from another lady who didn't want some items out of view of the guy who was doing the sign ups) but they refused me and my disabled child. I was considering attending that church since there were some people in the community who highly praised this church but after what happened at the food bank today I am definitely soured on attending church and going back to the food bank as well. I do have to say the pastor of this church is a very nice man, as I spoke to him 2 weeks ago when he called me back and gave me the dates, I just wish I was told you could only go once a month because I most definitely was not told you could only get food there once a month.

Thank you to the Rock of Salvation congregation and pastoral staff for their loving support for my father's funeral service, grave site ceremony and repast gathering in their social hall. The scripture readings, inspirational music, and heartfelt reflections shared provided family and friends with a memorial befitting a man whose life touched so many. May God bless you.

I've been going to this church for 7 years and I love it so much. I can be free and there are people who care about me. They show everyone love from the day that they walk in and its unlike any other church in the entire nation. I don't know what I would do without it.
