Ok, I know what you're thinking. Does Northern Virginia really need another brewery? Need is a loaded term. We can live without this, but Rocket Frog will make life better.
Rocket Frog recently opened and my wife and I dropped in to do a tasting flight. Started with the Angry Alice IPA (7% ABV 65 IBU) this is a light/pale golden IPA. Very crisp and clean with Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops. I consider this a great hot summer porch beer.
We then had the Angry, Angry Alice IPA, which is an Imperial / Double of the aforementioned IPA. At 8.4% ABV it's not exactly high octane and while good, we couldn't really taste meaningful differences from the first Angry Alice.
The we tried the Cosmic Trails IPA (6.5% ABV 63 IBU). This is more cloudy/yellow straw colored. The Citra hops bring the fruit bombs, but it's not too bitter.
Finally we finished out with the Wallops Island Brown Ale (5% ABV 23 IBU). This was the stand out winner. Many local breweries skip over a brown ale option or when they do it they produce an overly sweet beer. This beer had great malty toast/caramel notes, but was well balanced with Pacific Northwest hops to have a dry finish rather than residual sweetness. We walked away with a growler fill of this offering.
Tasting room is rather non-descript. Basically a typical industrial office park brewery set up. Good service. Plenty of parking. Located near the Sterling version of Crooked Run, if you want a quick brewery one-two punch.
Bottom line: really solid initial offerings from this new brewery. Good location if you live or are doing business in and around Dulles. Looking forward to watching (tasting) how these guys develop.
