Rocket Sushi is a little gimmicky, but the food is solid - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The most memorable thing about Rocket Sushi isn’t the food, but how it arrives. Fittingly, plates ofsushi, bowls oframen, and the occasional slices of cheesecake are sent to your table via a miniature NASA rocket. It’s a setup that’s especially thrilling if you’re under the age of 10, which explains the many families that are usually packed in here. It is undeniably gimmicky, but even for adults, the first few launches are genuinely fun, especially if you’re someone who thrives on instant gratification. Once the novelty wears off, though, the experience loses its luster and becomes more about efficiency than spectacle." - Patrick Wong

Rocket Sushi is a fun spot with a lively vibe. The food isn’t particularly impressive, but it’s decent enough for a casual family night out.

Google
Kind of silly and fun set-up with an honest-to-god conveyor belt that whisks orders to you. Thought it would feel sterile to order from a tablet, but in fact the dishes are well-pictured and described and this takes the guesswork out of what exactly you're ordering -- plus everything arrives super fast. Best, the fish is extremely fresh and portions are large. Appetizers, sushi, and rolls were all very good. The women serving were quick with whatever we needed and quite sweet. I'll be going back.

Google
This place is great. I don't even know why they have servers. We'll I understand why they have them. Anyway, service was helpful and on top of it. You order off a tablet at the table and your food arrives on a rocket train to your table. It was way cool. Recommend going just to watch that. They also had vegan rolls and other options for vegan. I ordered the Candle Stick roll and an amazing Golden Spicy Tuna roll.

Google
Absolutely loves my experience at this fun sushi spot! The fusion of technology with dining, thanks to their rocket cars and tablet-based ordering system, made for a swift and seamless way to enjoy a meal. It's refreshing not to have to flag down a waiter for every little thing. The plum was great, and I was pleasantly surprised by their selection of sake. But let's talk about the main event: the sushi. It was pretty top-tier. The nigiri, in particular, stood out—not only were the portions more generous than what I've encountered elsewhere, but the quality was unmistakably good. Our party was large, but the service didn't miss a beat; attentive and efficient, they made sure our dining experience was nothing short of fantastic. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone in search of exceptional sushi and a unique dining experience. A must-visit!

Google
Clean establishment, attentive service and large portions! Sushi is fresh and it’s delivered to your table via a rocket! Half the fun is playing with the tech to order and receive your food. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Google
Chef roll is fresh and delicious and Waugh beef on top, with drizzle of teriyaki sauces. Dragon is crunchy inside and I can taste different ladders of flavors on top. Server recommended Spider roll and its perfect! I love how they have a wide vegetarian selections. My friend started working here for a while now so I decided to visit them and have a quick boost. I love the relaxing atmosphere here which they have no rush at all. I can take my time check the menu and chat with my friends and hand out for a long time. Anyway, love chilling here.

Google
Came to visit San Francisco for a weekend with the kids and wanted to visit a family friendly atmosphere for sushi. First off, the restaurant has good space for bigger groups of 5-6 people. Loved the rocket delivery; was fun for the kids 😍. The restaurant was VERY kid friendly. Our 2 year old had a melt down because she wanted to touch the rockets but we didn't let her. They were so prompt with coming to see if we needed help and provided candy to calm her. The food was delivered quickly and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Google
I had dinner here on a Thursday evening. We were seated immediately and were immediately taken with the cool tablet that you use to order food and the "rocket sleds" that deliver the food. In addition to the ingenious and fun aspects of the restaurant, the star of the show was the food. I've had sushi all over the world, including many times in Japan, and I can honestly say that I've never had nigiri with such generous portions of totally fresh fish. Granted, the prices are relatively high (like $14 for two pieces) but given that you're getting about double the fish you'd normally see on a piece of nigiri, I think it's a fair price. In addition to nigiri, we had a couple of rolls and miso soup. All was top notch. If you're looking for a fun place to have truly amazing sushi, this is your place. Highly recommended!

Yelp
No pics (sorry), but had a great meal at Rocket Sushi. I've already been planning my return... Favorites were the miso soup and double hamachi roll. Feels a little silly to say my favorite was the miso soup but trust me, it hits. All of the rolls and seafood were so fresh! You can definitely tell they have quality fish-- it's tender and rich, but not fishy at all. They also don't skimp on the fish! Also, who doesn't love conveyor belt sushi? Your food comes out on the cutest rockets. It's a nice casual spot, perfect for kids and families, but also nice enough to meet up with your in-laws.

Yelp
Friendly service and staff, pretty quick if you're in a rush. Came for one omakase. Few bites really stood out, 1-2 less so. Decent spread overall and nice presentation. Lovely rocket touch and atmosphere. Overall fairly fresh fish.

Yelp
Could not eat my Shoyu Ramen The broth had a weird taste and smell like bad quality meat- and the noodles were a little slimy/too slippery: So I ordered a veggie sushi roll- that was ok 1 star for food Adding 1 star for ambiance and service Im sure if I had complained I could have returned the ramen but I didn't feel Like a confrontation today and ordered a roll instead.

Yelp
We went here for a late lunch today! We ordered salmon sashimi and tuna sashimi and dragon roll, miso soups, and the lion king roll! Oh my goodness this sashimi was the most soft and tasty piece I ever had. It was so fresh! I was so hungry we didn't take any photos. Aah The food we ordered on the tablet menu and the order came to our table on a rocket ship revolver. It was so cute because the rocket design said nasa and it was shaped like a rocket. It was a fun experience as well! And ah definitely will come back. My only iffy is the booth seat had a weird friction to sweat pants. So when you're trying to enter and leave while scooting there is some trouble. So keep that in mind. Just for a pov with leg room.

Yelp
Cool idea for server-less ordering and delivery. Food is decent but nothing to salavate over, value is ok. Restaurants clean. A convenient spot for a quick work lunch. They do alot of takeout orders.

Yelp
Brought my family here on a Thursday night. My daughter has been wanting to try a Conveyor belt sushi spot, although this wasn't necessarily a conveyor belt it was cool how your food was delivered. We were sat immediately, no wait at all. It was very convenient being able to order food on the screen system at the table. They had staff there to answer a questions we had about the food. Was a nice little place to grab some sushi with family or friends. Everything we ordered came out fresh and tasted great! Will definitely come back of I'm in the area again!

Yelp
First time going to Rocket Sushi. It was fun! My 7 year old niece loved how the food came out on 'rocket ships' on a conveyor belt. Food was very good, place was clean and out waitress was attentive and since it was our first time, patiently explained the ordering process.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place! A variety of Japanese food, prompt service, and great shtick with the rockets. It's always fun to add a moment of play ordering from a tablet and watching your food come down a rocket themed conveyer belt. The decor and spaciousness took me back to Japan for sure! A lil review of our order: Veggie caterpillar roll: Delicious, really fresh and hearty at the same time. Spicy edamame: pretty spicy oil, not too salty, a good start to the meal. Vegetarian Udon: super savory, light broth. Noodles were so chewy in the best way! Tempura roll: Pretty yummy, but maybe a little heavy/greasier. Gyozas (not pictured): perfectly fried, really good. We came in 30 minutes before closing and had 15 minutes to order, but all the food came out so fast, and the staff served us so many refills of food and tea. As two people, we spent about $80 all in, but it was a lovely experience. We were only 2, but the tables are definitely meant for larger parties!

Yelp
My son chose this restaurant and it was delightful! I thought it was going to be like any conveyor belt sushi place, but when we walked in, I didn't see the belt. After we were seated and the server explained that we just order at our table on a small kiosk, and our food will arrive at our table. The food was quite good and the ROCKET method of serving was super-creative and much more sanitary! Cute place!

Yelp
Pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon, not sure if the sf marathon had anything to do with it. Looks super popular with delivery apps as they have a row of tables dedicated for togo orders. Really good service, super attentive whether you're looking for the restroom or need more water. Huge portions of fish on the nigiri and even on special the special rolls. Quality is expected and not the greatest but that's the trade off for portion size. Really fishy taste in my mouth afterwards was kinda gross lol.

Yelp
SO GOOD! my second time here & this place is super consistent. first time trying the blossom roll & this place was very generous with the outside layer of tuna. very fresh & surprisingly filling even though we ordered only two rolls. rolls were both huge & the food came out quickly. water was refilled twice & the waiters very attentive throughout the service. good prices, large portions, & even better food. also entertaining to watch the sushi on a rocket launch towards your table at top speed! would highly recommend this place. all the seating is in large booths making for a comfy experience. solid spot for a date night!
google avatar

Makena L.

Yelp
There's a rocket that brings your sushi to you! You order on an iPad, but if you need any special accommodations, you can just tell the waitress and she'll let the chef know (I'm allergic to avocados, for instance). The interior is cute. I think the rocket adds a lot of novelty. There was no wait for 2 on a Sunday evening. We ordered 3 rolls, which was filling for us. If you order more than like, $50 or something, you get to order a glass of plum wine or sake for $1!
google avatar

Jessie H.

Yelp
Decent sushi spot with a fun aspect that sets them apart from the others. The food is delivered on a speed belt. Its quick, fresh and tasty. I really loved the hand rolls but the more pricey roll fell a bit flat and tasted average at best. The service otherwise was great & attentive.
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
Chutoro sashimi was amazing and tender but $22, would not recommend Bonito due to the fishier taste but only $9. Always get fried tofu and edamame, ramen is also good. Bacon mochi appetizer is a little too spicy but unique. Need to go here for the rockets at least once! Quick service and always get a seat immediately. $1 wine/soju deal.
google avatar

Yelp
Sometimes sushi restaurants with fun themes/gimmicks fall short when it comes to food, but Rocket Sushi really delivered! The portion sizes were generous and ingredients tasted super fresh, and I love being able to continuously order more food on the iPad and have it delivered to the table via rocket. It doesn't get super busy because it seems like a lot of their business is takeout, but would really recommend going in person and having fun watching the rockets! Prices were reasonable too - I got 1 specialty roll, 1 maki, and shared edamame and ended up spending ~$40 after tax/tip.

Yelp
Rocket Sushi is a fun spot with a lively vibe. The food isn't particularly impressive, but it's decent enough for a casual family night out.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 I visited this restaurant with my friend because we wanted to watch the Warriors game lol. At first, they weren't playing the game, but I asked our waiter if he could change the channel! They were so kind to do so. The food was mid, but the service was excellent! Food Ratings: Unagi Handroll: 4/5 - This dish is hard to mess up, and it did not disappoint. 49er Roll: 3.5/5 - This roll was good, but I didn't realize the fish would be torched. As a result, the sushi was slightly warm, which threw me off. Hiya Yakko Tofu: 3/5 - It was just average, nothing special. Calamari: 3/5 - I wasn't a fan of the thick batter on the calamari. Sauce that came with it was a bit heavy. I recommend adding a squeeze of lemon to give it a bit of zestyness.

Yelp
Service here was very friendly and very quick! This was my first time and the rockets that zip to and from each table with tasty sushi on top are amazing! We ordered Miso soup, Seaweed salad, Chicken karaage, Romeo and Juliet Roll, Hamachi roll, and a Rock and Roll roll. Everything was so fresh and delicious, and we caught the buy $50 and get a sake for $1 deal, talk about a win!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is hands down me and my partner's go to spot. The staff is always super nice and attentive, and the sashimi and nigiri are cut THICK and fresh. So delicious - we seriously love it here!

Yelp
Just ok. The fish seemed fresh but not tasty. I don't know why/how sushi chefs can make the fish taste different but some have flavor and others do not. The biggest turn off for me (which may be a turn on to others) was the size of the sushi and sashimi. They were huge pieces. I've never had sushi that requires two bites. It's just not enjoyable with such a large piece of raw meat. It felt more carnivorous than delicacy. It was like gnawing on a side of a raw fish. They could have easily made two pieces of sushi from the one and it would have been much better. It wasn't bad but I think the size turned me off. Felt too primitive and barbaric. I suspect many will like it and it's not bad. But, the size just bothered me.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner and glad it's close in the neighborhood for me. Got seated right away walking in and ordered right away. It's clean and cute inside. Easy to order from the tablet at each table. The rocket idea is cute and like that it comes made to order and fresh rather than a revolving sushi belt. I hadn't been here in years and glad it survived COVID. We got a couple speciality rolls and ramen. Rolls were delish and fresh and filling. The ramen had good flavor, noodle texture, and add ins. A bit odd it was like a spring mix of salad on top but was still good. We got a glass of wine for $1 as a perk for ordering over $50 dining in. We chose the plum wine and was a good size pour and fairly good. Plum wine isn't my go to anyway as it's too sweet but a nice deal. Food came out quick and service was attentive when called if needed.

Yelp
A fun spot! We came for dinner on a Friday night and while it was busy, we were still able to get a table immediately. The layout is very unique, as the food is served to you on a rocket tray so you have to be sitting next to the belt. It's almost like conveyer belt sushi but with just one line. We got the sweet potato roll, yellowtail scallion roll, xxx roll, and the lion king roll. They were all really good! I especially liked the sweet potato and yellowtail rolls, as the rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned while the ingredients were so fresh and well seasoned. Prices are also super reasonable, and portions are generous! I'd definitely recommend checking this spot out.
google avatar

Yelp
HOLE IN WALL! Came in a group of 10 and we were immediately seated - the location was deceptively large. The service was super fast and the mechanism of food delivery was quite fun (dish came out on a rocket counter) The sushi was great as well the two highlights were family affair (seared albacore) and chef roll (wagyu beef). Would recommend trying those two!!
google avatar

Cece Y.

Yelp
Super friendly staff! This place is surprisingly much bigger inside than what I expected when I walked by numerous times in the past. It was very bright, comfy, and warm on a chilly Monday night when I stopped by to pick up some takeout. There's lots of spacious booth seating that looked comfy, so I will try dining in next time.
google avatar

Clarissa C.

Yelp
Great restaurant! I would recommend the golden salmon if you're feeling something deep-fried. You order items on an iPad and the food gets sent to you quickly on a "rocket." The service was good, though minimal because most of the activity is self-directed. The restaurant is fairly large and bright, albeit a bit impersonal. The portions were pretty big and we took advantage of the $1 sake (once you spend a minimum of $50).
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
I love coming to Rocket Sushi for a quick sushi fix. I love how the sushi comes out in a rocket, which is different from the typical conveyor belt sushi. My favorite rolls are the Black Angel, Chef, and Family Affair rolls. When you check in on Yelp, you can also get a $1 sake, which is a plus. The food does not come out extremely quickly, but I feel like that is understandable as it could take some time to make the rolls, especially if the whole restaurant is packed. The restaurant itself is very big and very spacious as each table is really big and can fit many people in a group. It is pretty convenient to get to via public transportation as it is on Market and is close to multiple areas (Hayes, Mission, Civic Center, etc). Parking is not the most convenient but not the worst; there just isn't much parking directly by the restaurant.
google avatar

Yeebing T.

Yelp
I was in the mood for sushi and this was near the cafe that I was at, so I thought it would be a good idea to come here before I return home. The service was very friendly and welcoming, letting me know the rocket system worked when they realized it was my first time. There was a relatively calm yet crowded ambiance, with most of the tables being occupied except for the one that was conveniently closest to the door. I think there's also outdoor seating, but the rocket doesn't go all the way there so I assume the system for outdoor seating either works the same as a regular restaurant or it's just public seating. I decided to get the Cherry Blossom sushi, which was a bit of a wait. I don't recall how long but every now and then I could hear the sounds of the rocket belt and this likely didn't help with the wait. The sushi itself was pretty good, and I left feeling fulfilled. Overall a pleasant experience, I wouldn't mind returning if someone was interested in getting sushi in SF.
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
This place is awesome! My husband and I have been twice within the past 6 months and each time we had a great time. The fish is fresh and the service is attentive. When you're seated your server takes your drink order and then you place your food order via tablet at the table. The pictures and description of the rolls, etc. is very helpful. If you have food allergies like I do, talk to the server when you are seated and they will help you navigate the menu. You can reorder drinks from the tablet as well, and get a refill on ginger and wasabi. They usually have a happy hour special. I think we got a large bottle of sake for free because we ordered more than $50. The food is delivered to your table by a rocket! It comes out on rails from the kitchen and zooms right to your tableside. Take the plate off the rocket and it zooms back to the kitchen. Such a hoot!
google avatar

Ayham D.

Yelp
Sushi here was pretty good. Service was average, leaning towards bad. We enjoyed our experience until a baby roach came towards us on the conveyer belt from the direction of the kitchen. That ruined the appetite of everyone in my party of 3 and we struggled to finish our plates. When we informed the staff, we were offered free soft drinks as compensation. After us insisting, they offered us a small discount off the meal. I didn't notice them take action to remove the bug. Overall it was a below average experience that didn't give me confidence. I'd go somewhere else next time.
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
I had a wonderful meal here on a nice afternoon. Sitting at the front deck of the restaurant is nice. You get to see market Street always stimulating. I enjoyed the food, particularly the Hamachi Kama and the various nigiri's. Service was great. definitely will be back.
google avatar

CJ T.

Yelp
The prices are a bit high than I've paid elsewhere for two pieces of nigiri, but the quality and portion of fish was excellent. The nigiri came out pretty quick with gyoza soon to follow. Everything tasted fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Viki N.

Yelp
This is a place with minimal human interaction where you order your food from a tablet, and the plates will zoom right to you like a train! Most of the menu consisted of maki, so I didn't have much expectations for an authentic Japanese experience. However, the pleasant surprise was how huge all the food portions were I ordered 3 different types of rolls and regretted not just ordering 2 because of how big the rolls were! The disappointing parts were the big globs of mayo on top of Romeo and Juliet that completely masks the flavor of the scallop, and how the sushi combo had the exact same cuts of fish for the nigiri and sashimi pieces. Overall, this is a solid spot if you're craving sushi on a budget but you wanna come out feeling stuffed
google avatar

Angela Y.

Yelp
Solid rolls at a convenient location in central SF. I tried a few rolls and sashimi here, which were all pretty fresh and tasty. Ordering on the tablet was convenient, and our food came out on a rocket. There are a lot of large booths at this location, so it would be well-suited for a group meal. We came on a weekend, and it was not crowded for lunch. I would come again to satisfy the sushi craving! I'm not really sure how I feel about the "order on a tablet and have your food delivered to you by a rocket/robot" model though. As a result, you don't really have a chance to interact with waiters, and the novelty does wear off.

Milla L.

Yelp
In San Francisco's sushi scene, Rocket Sushi reigns supreme. Rolls so tasty, quick, and neat, Zooming rockets bring the treat. Lady Gaga fills the air, "Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah"--everywhere! Chopsticks dancing, stomachs swoon, Nigiri grooving to the tune. Delicious bites, a funky show, Was it dinner or disco? Who's to know? One thing's certain, bold and true: Rocket Sushi--we love you!
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Choo choo! All aboard, last stop... my mouth. A wonderful experience and the Sushi Train™ was a novel mode of service in the moving sushi experience. That said, the prices are crazier than an Amtrak ticket.
google avatar

Irene J.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite place to order take out from. A random place I landed on but so glad I did. From California rolls to chirashi bowls no one has really done it better for takeout than Rocket.

Ksjsjs K.

Yelp
I had the golden spicy salmon and it was too spicy then they described! Horrible service and SO LOUD!
google avatar

Karishma K.

Yelp
Updated review: Had the best time here as always! The food is always amazing. If you've never had sushi brought to your table via a rocket, you haven't lived. You order on the tablet and it gets to you by rocket. The service here is also amazing! Started with some decaf team and spicy edamame. The spicy edamame is really tasty and flavorful but it is on the spicier side. For the rolls, we went with Philly roll, 49ers roll and the XXX roll. My favorite was definitely the 49ers roll. It was really simple but super flavorful. Ended the night with some mango mochi and it was amazing perfect! Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Rajiv K.

Yelp
Casual sushi spot. Unique direct to table conveyer system. I felt the fish fresh, good quality and nicely portioned. The value of the meal was there. I'd easily return and recommend.
google avatar

Victoria T.

Yelp
Good variety of choices. We ordered ramen, sushi, and katsu. We went for lunch and it wasn't too busy and service was quick. It was cool that your food comes out on the conveyer belt on a rocket.
google avatar

May Z.

Yelp
My boyfriend found Rocket Sushi for my birthday based on the great Yelp reviews. I am now obsessed. The fish was some of the freshest and most delectable I've ever had, specifically the tuna. The service was so sweet and fast! The food came out so quickly and it arrives to your table on the fun little boat thing. The restaurant is pretty big too, so it would be good for larger parties.
google avatar

Yelp
Fish Quality: 4 out of 5 Service : 3 out of 5 Ambience: 4.5 out of 5 Rolls: 3 out of 5 Rainbow Roll: Shouldn't come with Eel Sauce, which drowns out the flavor. It isn't advertised with eel sauce, 4 out of 8 pieces had a tolerable drizzle, the other rolls were rather thick beyond normal bite size, so slightly much, for texture purposes, although quality is present :)
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Convenient seating, extremely fast service, yummy sushi! Spot is pretty busy with online orders and is pretty fast at delivering food. However, because the service was so fast sometimes it felt like we were a bit rushed eating. The rockets were so cute delivering the sushi, but this is different from conveyor belt sushi where you order on an ipad instead of having continuous rounds of sushi flowing
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
I just looked for a random sushi place with ramen and we decided to go here. We were able to get seated quickly. This place is cool since you order on a tablet and a train brings you the food. The waitress bringing drinks was great too and the prices themselves for the drinks were not bad either. I got a California and Philadelphia roll and they were both amazing. Also, I tried the ramen that was just ok. I would definitely go back for the sushi.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
Visited this spot for dinner on a Thursday and boy was parking tough. I circled the block for ~15 minutes before I could find a spot four blocks away. If you're planning on coming to this area, I'd highly highly recommend taking public transportation or an uber because parking was the worst I've ever seen it (even by city standards!) I ordered the XXX roll which had spicy tuna and cucumber inside, with salmon, mango, and avacado on the outside. The slamon tasted fresh but the tuna didn't have a very rich flavor to it. Overall it hit the spot because I was craving sushi, but I can't say I would come here again. The servers were friendly and refilled our waters frequently. The food took about 10 minutes to come out which was relatively quick. Based on the harsh lighting and the large size of the booths, I would think this restaurant is for families more so than friends
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Love this sushi place! The restaurant is very cute with rockets bringing you sushi. They have great quality fish with big pieces! The service is great as well!
google avatar

Adel W.

Yelp
Honestly I didn't have the highest expectations for Rocket, since the location isn't my favorite. The quality of the sushi surprised me! The interior has a lot of booth tables, and you order on an iPad. The service was really sweet! The prices are a little steep but some of the dishes like the boston roll were quite hefty rolls.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
The sushi here tastes great and we loved the massive pieces of sashimi we received with our order. We also got the golden spicy salmon roll, which was the perfect amount of fried to fresh ratio. The Romeo and Juliet was also a favorite with so much flavorful fish. We also got the double hamachi roll, which as a big hamachi fan, I couldn't get enough of. All in all rocket sushi is a solid place with lots of great roll options and fantastic sashimi.
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
Amazing food especially the sashimi. The rolls though a little pricey back it up with a ton of fish and awesome flavor. I respect any place where the edamame is a reasonable price. Very busy place so delivery took a long time. Be prepared for that and this is one of the best take out sushi places you can get
