Rocket Taco

Ordered a chicken deluxe taco while we came to get some groceries from the store opposite to it and the food was delicious! We ordered a take out and took both the salsas as well with the order. The salsas were really good as well.

This is good food. Good service and quality ingredients. Great for dine in or take out including online orders. House made hot sauce, street tacos and massive burritos are the staple but they also offer typical quick Mexican dishes. Daily special and fresh salads and vegetarian options.

Great good and location. Staff is very welcoming. Loved the vegan tacos we had. Sweet Potato one was the best. Service was very quick. One star off for the flies around and very packed indoor seating area. Still a must visit.

Excellent tacos! Great veggie options, too -- I went with the sweet potato black bean, but they also had a special with cauliflower. Everyone loved their food. Reasonably priced and the service was super friendly and attentive. Inside is small, but they still accommodated our group of 6, and they have a large porch area that is dog friendly!

We found this place recently and absolutely love it. It's now one of those places we have to stop every time we go down to the ferry. They have freshly made tortillas and unique, but traditional tacos. I would highly recommend checking them out. It's a bummer I have to take a ferry to them but it is sure worth it.

This was my 2nd and my son's 4th time to eat at Rocket Taco. The food has been good each time, service fast compared to other Whidbey Island eateries. I especIally love the sweet potato filling, but the basic bean dish is amazing - a hint of smokiness in a rich, red sauce. I'm on a strict medically-monitored diet and they kindly suggested the kid's meal, which was perfect. I wish they offered more la carte items, such as one taco. My son loves the heftiness and taste of their beef burrtio.

Whidbey Island has its charms, but as far as food goes you stick to the basics. Fortunately Rocket Taco opened up a restaurant in Freeland, and it is a pleasant surprise that stands out - an island of flavor in an ocean of basic. To set expectations, it's not a standout compared to Mexican in SoCal, or Texas, or Chicago, but it is above average for the PacNW, and makes a big impression on Whidbey. I would not hesitate to recommend.

The tacos here are so full of flavor and they have a good variety on their menu. The people are always friendly, and it's such a cool place to hang out in Freeland.

TL;DR: Easy and quick stop for some classic tacos! We split the fish tacos and the carnitas tacos, both with beans. I liked the pineapple salsa on the fish and enjoyed the pickled onions with the carnitas! All of the tacos were well-loaded. We got it to-go and it was ready quickly. I was satisfied with everything, but felt it could all use more flavor. But a side of guac for $1?! Count me in on that.

Extremely overpriced service is the bate minimum. All servings are minuscule barely enough for a snack and definitely not enough for a meal. When in doubt PASS ON ROCKET TACO

Great little reassurance in Freeland. The menu is pretty straightforward, and each item offers a selection of protein or vegetarian options. I ordered the basic tacos with chicken with a side of chips (beans are an option as well). Three little chicken tacos came on the platter, each a little bigger than a street taco, and loaded with well seasoned and perfectly cooked chicken. I used both the red salsa as well as the green habanero. Perfect size for a tasty lunch. Although I'm not a fan of the order, pay (with tip option), sit down, then wait fir your food to be delivered to your table, the quick and friendly service made it palatable. The decor is basic with a rustic vibe. I can see parking being an issue on busy summer weekends. All in all, great lunch. I'll get back again.

Most of the food is really good but a bit more pricey than expected for the portion size. They offer a group of tacos per order but you have to order only one kind, even though there are several flavors from which to choose - no mix/match. The soup was inedible, I thought, and so did our guests. A bit embarrassing as we'd told them it had great tasting food. But the ambience is lovely out on the deck in summer and the staff is really nice.

Cute place. Great back patio. Indoor seating as well. Friendly service. Order arrives quickly. Good portion size. Reasonable prices. The atomic burrito felt like it weighed a couple pounds! Tacos were amazing. We tried the carnitas and chicken. 3 for $14. Only bummer is you can't mix and match. Chips and guac were great. Salsas were flavorful but wanted more heat.

A must while on the island! Came in to grab lunch to go. Got their special, carne asada tacos, and we also got the chorizo/potato quesadilla and beef tacos. Fav was definitely beef, super juicy. Staff were happy to make dietary accommodations for me and they even have vegan beans as a side for those that don't eat animal products! I think I liked the vegan beans more than the classic beans as a side. They have a large beverage selection as well! Quaint spot in Freeland, seems to get fairly busy at lunch so be prepared!

One of the best vegan options in south Whidbey. The food was super affordable and very yummy. We had the vegan cauliflower tacos and vegetarian sweet potato and black bean burrito. The food and salsas were very flavorful and pretty affordable. The back patio was very nice and spacious, plus we got our order super quickly.

We were going to Whidbey ice cream and then stumbled upon rocket taco which is next door. I got the Jamaica and al pastor tacos. Loved the fact they kept the pineapple with it and there was a side of beans. There's only two salsas to put on it, a red one that's mild with a smokey flavor and a hot green salsa which just tastes spicy. There's an outside communal patio that they share with rocket taco. Inside there's a few tables as well. Service was quick. Ambiance is cozy. Ping pong and Cornhole were outdoor games customers could play. It isn't authentic but it is refreshing to have in southern Whidbey

Cal-mex style food - focus on fresh ingredients and veggie-forward dishes. This time I had the salad with carnitas which was huge (although I ate it all) full of vegetables, beans, meat, chips and flavor. Very satisfying - far from just a salad. My spouse had the burrito which she almost always gets - they do a good job crisping up the shell and it is hearty and delicious. We also got chips / which are delicious but might be better if they were made fresh. The mango margaritas are good - well mixed and flavorful - I personally like them better than the traditional margs here but YMMV. Place is walk up to order, then you find a seat in the relatively small seating area. Although it was full when I came in the tables turn over quickly. Service was friendly, polite and quick. No indoor bathroom when we were there - it was broken? They did have a port-a-potty but I hope they fix that soon.

I really do not understand how they are at 4 stars. Either I came on a very off day or others really are ridiculously generous. Perhaps there is just no competition here? I got the chicken tacos with pinto beans on the side. The food looks very fresh and there is a lot of meat given. The problem is there is zero flavor present. Nada. It's like they use no spice at all. I tried using the beans in the tacos. Nope. The beans have a tiny flavor but not much. I tried adding the red hot sauce. Just a hint of smoke flavor. I even tried the hot tomatillo sauce. It's hot but no tomatillo flavor. Nothing. I would like to score them higher because the place is clean, fresh and well-priced. But if I give them 3 stars it would mean that I would seriously consider coming back in a pinch. I cant imagine ever coming back here. There would be no point to it.

Ordered my food and it was ready in just a few minutes! Not only that but the staff was awesome and helped me with all the choices! I love their pickled onions. Very fresh ingredients and delicious. I love the small town taco stand feel. During winter time there are only a few tables to sit at and they seem to always be people enjoying the seating! I will be going back to try other menu items!

Tacos truly out of this world! **Pun intended** The Chorizo Potato tacos are the BEST tacos I've ever had! I'm absolutely blown away by how amazing they were! Friendly staff and quick service! Will be back!!

Two different vegan tacos / burritos / salad fillings, both excellent. The sweet potato and black bean filling comes with guacamole. The cauliflower chickpea filling comes with fresh cuke and cilantro. If you get tortilla chips on the side, you can use them to scoop up the filling that escapes your tacos. Several tables inside, mellow music, and a clean bathroom as well.

Rocket Taco has become one of our favorites and our go to for take out when we have friends or family in town. The al pastor is incredible. My one request is to PLEASE bring the queso from the Seattle location to the island. Who doesn't love queso? Thank you for so many delicious meals, Rocket Taco

Truly traditional tacos, handmade tortillas, friendly service, sit outside on the back patio and sip margaritas all afternoon. A Whidbey must visit spot.

We popped in to place an order to go here when we were visiting friends last month. The services was fast and friendly. I got the sweet potato and black bean tacos based on a previous review that said they weren't spicy at all. I was so glad I got them! I don't do well with spice and there was very little heat. My stomach had zero issues with them and they were so very tasty! I can't remember what my husband got? But he loved it. (Meat tacos of some kind) Our friends got chicken burritos because those are their favorite. We got a side of chips and guac. It was more than enough for four people (we had leftovers). We will be back next time we are on the island for sure!

Really friendly and accommodating. Amazing food, especially the guacamole, which tasted great but also kept well overnight in the fridge. Prices are not horrible when you order in bigger amounts for several people at once.

Coming from California, I don't think I can give a fair assessment of these tacos. I did try three traditional tacos including carnitas, fish, and beef. I was hoping the fish tacos would be the star of the show because the shop was located by the water, but unfortunately they were my least favorite. The fish tacos were too sweet for my liking. The carnitas and beef tacos were packed with meat. I wish the carnitas were fried and a bit more flavorful. Overall, this place satisfies the taco craving but perhaps not my favorite.

The service is really good here the staff are always nice. I've been going here for a year now. I usually only go here when it's the last option or only option because everything closes so early on Whidbey. The food how ever is the definition of white people, Mexican food. Now when I say that I don't mean it's bad but it's definitely not great. if you're looking for Carlos or Juan to throw down in the kitchen, this place is not it. You will probably find a Chad or Sarah in the back. The price is way over priced for the product but being on whidbey and the only option in Freeland next to fare market which is way overpriced as well. They can get away with it. If you're eating here, you're probably only eating here because it's the only option or your catering your kids soccer game.

Flavorful, filling tacos in Freeland! I ordered the chicken deluxe tacos and really liked the rocket sauce on top. My mom ordered the sweet potato tacos, which were beautifully flavored, but the sweet potato chunks were a little too crunchy for our taste. Friendly service and cozy indoor seating!

This place is good. I went with traditional pork tacos. And they were ok the meat was lacking a little flavor could have used some more seasoning when roasting it. And the green salsa was a bit on the low flavor side as well. The fish tacos were great tho. So that's the plus. The place was super cute and seemed reasonable clean.

My husband and I have been customers for years. We have raved about the taco salad with griddled cod, al pastor, carnitas, and amazing margaritas at this cute little shop across from Payless. Until today... What the hell happened? I get my salad, it looks beautiful! Presentation on point, and I dig into the rubberiest unseasoned piece of fish. It died of freezer burn, no amount of coaxing is going to revive flavor or texture. You may as well have put a dog treat in the salad. The raspberry lemonade margarita could use some work too. Not flavorful. The Al Pastor did not disappoint, neither did the pozole. Take a look at that fish. It was awful. It was not busy, almost two hours until closing.

Check out their taco salad. It's huge (about right for the price charged) and has good flavor. The only issue is the salsa. During my call in order the nice server asked if I wanted salsa with the salad and I said yes, a couple since I like salsa. The salsa containers (there were two, thanks) are teeny tiny! The ones that hold maybe two tablespoons! This for a full plate size salad? Really? Come on. Other than that I would recommend them, but if you like salsa, make sure to specify you'd like a large serving. Oh, and the key lime pie cup is tasty.

We tried this place on a whim & were extremely happy we did! We shared one Carnitas Atomic Bomb Burrito (pork) & it was big enough that we were both satisfied BUT it tasted so good we wished we had gotten two. Great portions for the price. Great quality ingredients. Great portions of meat, no skimping here. Next time we drive by we will make a stop.

This is an excellent taco restaurant. I've eaten here several times, usually getting food to go. It may not be exactly the style that abuela (grandma) used to make; but that's not what this review is about. First, and some might think foremost, the corn tortillas are excellent. The fillings are excellent too. My two favorites are carnitas, and guajillo spiced beef. For two, or more people the taco family pack is a good idea. It comes with twelve tortillas; but, you can order extra. The beans are very tasty too. If you've got a good appetite, don't ignore the tortilla soup. It's thick, pleasantly spicy, and tasty. Unfortunately pozole, which is also excellent, isn't currently on the menu at the Freeland WA location. Additionally, as well as eating at the restaurant you also have the option of calling ahead to order for pick up. To sum it up, excellent, and tasty!

Great stop! I'm often hesitant trying Mexican food in areas I may stereotype as atypical for good Mexican food. I'm a southwest snob and too often disappointed when I'm trying to satisfy a hometown craving. This place had great reviews and I was craving. I gave it a try. Sometimes you just know when you walk in and take a breath. Fantastic menu. I got my standard carnitas tacos. I was trouble in choosing as you can't mix. Next time I'll surely sample the fish tacos (likely in two days)! The carnitas were perfect with pickles onions, guacamole and cilantro. Tortilla was classic. The chips seemed store bought but this is a small joint and you can't expect all homemade. The chips were similar to my store bought favorites. The beans were delicious. All the drinks were authentic typical. I could only finish two of the three tacos they were so loaded. I took a risk with no disappointment and will be thrilled to return! Great vegetarian options also!

It's a decent little taco shop. Pricey and you can't buy a single taco. It's a casual place, order at the counter as they drop the food off at the table. It was busy but the staff was friendly and quick. Overall a decent experience.

All around 5 stars! Cleanliness, friendliness, deliciousness, and any...ness. Day 1...had the 3 beef deluxe tacos meal. PHENOMENAL! Hands down THE BEST taco ever! Day 2 (in a row)...what the? They have burritos? SURE! Got the beef burrito. Bomb-diggity! What I like about the tacos is its crunchy on the outside a bit...but soft in the center or the tortilla. Didn't fall apart even after a 10-15 min. drive back to the shop. Flavor is all up in there! But add their green sauce for a bit of an extra kick and I was literally drooling. They're that good. So yeah...I think Freeland has just found the best restaurant for tacos and burritos. I didn't get any for the guys at the shop so I gotta cut this off now before they take the wheels off my ride. They weren't too happy about me not getting them any. LMAO Go order already! My car is okay and had to let you know the burrito was found on their menu online...

Rocket Taco called the police on me while having lunch there with my adult daughter. Apparently, as I was at the counter taking in the overwhelming cognitive load that is their handwritten chalkboard menu, I apologized for having to slowly scan the menu offerings and explained that it was our first time. "Our first time" -- Some sick person with an overactive imagination perceived me as having ill intentions and that my adult daughter accompanying me may be in a compromised position; a 49-year old man was there to make "our first time" special with salty tacos and a bland margarita. Eww. Concern from this person(s) lead to the manager calling the police and an awkward and unwelcome visit by an Island County sheriff's deputy. The officer had my name, which could have only been provided by restaurant staff from the debit card transaction; providing this was a violation of my privacy. The deputy was also rolling his eyes the entire time because the claim was ridiculous -- a total waste of county time and resources. He mentioned the basis of the call was someone hearing me say it was "our first time" and getting really uncomfy. I live in Kitsap county and have been coming to Whidbey Island for decades, and yes, this was our first time to Rocket Taco. It is certainly our last. I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed in whomever took absolutely nothing and ran with it, or that the management did no due diligence to see if the concern was valid or baseless before calling the police. We were an hour into our 6th annual Dadventure Week where my daughter and I do overnight kayak trips to islands, rock climb, camp, hit old haunts and all the dairy freezes we can find and this is how we start. What a warm welcome to Rocket Taco, welcome to Freeland, welcome to Whidbey Island!! On the other hand, as the father of a daughter I do appreciate that someone was willing to say something if they saw something. What the person saw in this case was a ridiculous waste of everyone's time, has created bad will for Rocket Taco, and was a terrible start to this edition of Dadventure Week. I also appreciate that Rocket Taco includes guacamole on their extra salty carnitas tacos. That's a nice touch.

The food is good and so was the service. They have an outdoor dining area in the back of the restaurant and some games for kids and adults to keep themselves entertained. Overall a fun dining experience

I drive past Freeland a lot and I never noticed this taco shop until I was looking for food today. I love how straight forward the menu is. Sometimes when a restaurant has too many options I get so confused on what to order. The food came out surprisingly fast and they were probably some of the tastiest tacos I've had on island. The guacamole was super fresh and all around a good, filling meal. There wasn't even a crumb left over. Super cozy restaurant that I would frequent if I lived near!

So fresh, so delicious, so filling - yum! Rocket Taco is our go-to for tasty flavorful tacos on Whidbey. I love that they have vegan options. I recently enjoyed a 3-taco plate with chickpea/cauliflower tacos (hold the lime crema to make it vegan) and they were sooo good. The jamaica (hibiscus) drink was delish and had an herbaceous twist to it. The only thing I *wish* was that they allowed you to mix 'n match tacos. Not sure why they don't offer this.

We always make a point to visit this local taco joint when we're on Whidbey Island. The food is good and the patio is wonderful. We were sad to see that the lawn seating is no longer available and they have removed the outdoor games (foosball and corn hole). This honestly might make us go elsewhere. Part of the experience for us was sitting on the lawn and enjoying the games. The food remains delicious, but the atmosphere + food combo was what made this place really special. I'm also sad that the ice cream shop in the garage never really materialized.

Most impressive team, making the most delicious and very large items from their menu. A very well organized operation. The portions were huge and just as delicious. During this COVID time, they had the indoor dining area closed. When your order is ready for take-out, they walked the items over to your car. A must stop after a long day. We will be back.

When we moved to the island, this was the first restaurant we ate at. That was in pre-Covid times; you could have a conversation with loud background noise, and read lips. You could shake hands with a neighbor. You could sit down at an inside table and eat without fear of killing your self or your relatives. You could clear your throat without people moving strategically away from you. Now, things have changed. But the food here, if anything, has gotten better. Service too. And someone went and made the menu legible! Kudos! We got the pazole to share, my better half got her usual entrée salad (fantastic dressing, full of goodies and satisfying; she gets the pork) and I got the daily taco special, al pastor.we both got the special margarita of the day: spicy cranberry orange, with hints of cinnamon and cloves (the purist in me rebelled, but my inner child said, "It's still Christmas in my book, fat boy, bottoms up!") I love that they use compostables here. We sat outside as per requirement, wet tables, wet chairs, no heat lamps on a cold and drizzly January afternoon...missing star is because of this; if you offer outdoor seating, make it comfortable for Pete's sake. Wipe the chairs and tables. You have a gas fireplace: use it. Anyway... Flavors: BOOM! Service: nervous but friendly and efficient. Prices: reasonable. Margaritas: num num nummy. Wife: happy. Tummy: happy. Fear of death by exposure to the mf'n plague: low to midland. Recommended.

Service was excellent! Staff was friendly & accommodating. They had my order out in under 10 minutes & it was all correct. Food was decent which was unfortunate! I had been looking forward to trying this "hot spot" out for a week or two & I was let down. My 3 tacos were drowning in sauce & even with that amount of sauce they were relatively bland. I will definitely try it again as I don't give places like this a one time shot,especially with their reputation! So I will be back again to give it another try!

One of the few restaurants in Freeland. We grabbed lunch to go here while we were staying at an Air B-N-B near by. The place is cute and there is outside seating. There's a small parking lot. I ordered the taco salad for my friend and I got the regular salad with beef. Probably not ideal for a to go order as there are chips in the salad and it gets a little soggy. Still very tasty food - a little on the pricier side but overall good.

Cod quesadillas was excellent but the lime crème is what made it exceptional. Berry margarita was refreshing and yummy as well!

Rocket Taco is a great spot in Whidbey! My boyfriend and I come here every time we pass it. and are never really disappointed. They have a lot of really good salsa options, which is great at a taco place. The meats are really good and the tortillas are amazingly yummy. I've had better tacos in Seattle, but at very few places. My one complaint from Rocket Taco was the chicken tortilla soup. I'm a big fan usually, but Rocket Taco's is a bit underwhelming. So while I can't recommend that on the menu, I haven't been disappointed by anything else! SIDE NOTE- in pre COVID times they had corn hole and an open backyard space in the summer when I went one time with some really nice outdoor seating. The overall experience was really enjoyable, along with just the food. So overall, if you're on Whidbey, these are some of the best tacos you're gonna find and I highly recommend checking it out!

Reviewing for: Food Food: The salad was HUGE and delicious. We headed to whidbey for a weekend getaway and it was getting late and dark. We were running short on time and popped in here recognizing there's a location in Seattle. Had the chicken salad and it was enough to feed two people fully. Also had all variation of tacos. Glad we had a great experience because we're excited to try the location in seattle! Space: Small but didn't need to spend time! also next to a coffee place which was nice! Tips Tricks and Covid deets: Ordering online is super easy and didn't need to spend additional time talking to anyone. Overall: Will report back on Seattle location.

I've been back several times and worked my way through the rest of the meat options. They're all fine. The disappointing part continues to be the salsas. They're odd (the green one with a dusty flavor) or one dimensional (the red). I've taken to making my own carnitas at home or stopping at Patron or any number of Mexican restaurants off-island when I'm craving Mexican food.

Hands down, the best tacos on Whidbey!! I have been wanting to eat here for some time and finally had the opportunity to and OH EMMM GEEE!! I had the chicken, sweet potato/black been & Al pastor tacos; that come with a side of smoky beans. Portion, flavors...genius. The flour tortillas are homemade and they 100% make every tacos specialized flavor POP! Their guacamole is deliciously fresh. My only complaint would be the chips they serve with their guac. For how fresh and amazingly tasty everything is, you would think they would also have their own home made tortilla chip. Other than that, I will be back again and again and again and... Rocket taco has really yummy food, and a fun atmosphere. They are very popular and therefore often busy, which can lead to understandable order mess-ups. Their horchata is great!

Wow, this place is popular! We were there the Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend and there was a steady line coming in the door. We sat inside and forget to check out the back patio. Simple menu, either tacos or quesadillas, not burritos. They had many sodas and beers to choice from for drinks. Maybe wine? The interior and exterior looks new and inviting. The drinks and food came out quick. I ordered a chicken quesadilla, which was a little salty, but we will def go back! The beer was cold! Now there is an ice cream place next door, b

I was really excited to get some fish tacos while visiting Whidbey Island so I looked up taco spots and landed here. Sadly I didn't enjoy my fish tacos and after two bites decided I couldn't eat them - the fish felt soggy and the coconut crema was not good. I was extra disappointed because when you order tacos here you have to get three of the same type, you can't mix and match so I was stuck with three tacos I didn't want to eat. The chips and guacamole also had very little flavor. However, my partner enjoyed his beef tacos. When I asked if they had a restroom the staff pointed outside to a very gross porta-potty set up. Overall it was a disappointing experience.

Everything was delicious. We especially loved the taco salad, atomic burrito, and special margarita!
