The Best Italian Restaurants in New Orleans

"Famous for its macaroni and cheese, lunch specials, red gravy, endearing service, and enormous portions (seriously, has anyone ever left Rocky & Carlo’s without a to-go box?), this old-school, family-run eatery—opened in 1965 by two Sicilian families, the Tomasseos and Gios— is one of the most iconic affordable eats in all of the greater New Orleans area." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Where to Eat the Best Jambalaya in New Orleans - Eater New Orleans

"Rocky & Carlo’s is a beloved Chalmette restaurant that has survived hurricanes and fires, always reopening to serve hefty portions of Italian and New Orleans specialties to loyal regulars in the Parish. The endless menu covers all bases, from lasagna and sirloin steak to jambalaya, offered small or large. Prices don’t break the bank, another reason for lines out the door." - Beth D'Addono

Where to Find New Orleans’s Most Satisfying Salads

"The salads at this Chalmette Creole Italian classic are the bomb. At Rocky & Carlo’s, a favorite is the bowl of crisp iceberg, celery, Creole tomatoes, pickled green beans, and hard-boiled eggs, all drenched in an olive oil/red wine vinegar Italian dressing." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

The hype over the mac and cheese is way overboard. It’s not that special. It’s not a creamy mac and cheese but more on the dry side needing gravy on it. I ordered the hamburger steak with the aforementioned. As others mentioned, the ground meat lacks flavor. It needs plenty help in the seasoning department. Though I did very much enjoy the grilled onion topping and the brown gravy that covered both. The portions are enough for more than one person. Portion size doesn’t take the place to flavor. .

The Baked Macaroni & cheese with red gravy rules!! This is a St. Bernard Parish institution!! When you grow up in Chalmette like I did you take pride in Rocky's and talk about it far and wide!! Everything is delicious here. It's the vibe that IS Chalmette!! This is the place!! Don't sleep on that oyster / shrimp mixed poboy, y'all!! The one and only Rocky & Carlo's is legendary and a historic icon of St. Bernard Parish!! After Hurricane Katrina Rockys became the northern star, the compass that guided us and brought all of us "home" no matter where we landed after the storm. They're always welcoming and always have monstrous portions just like they had when we grew up there!! Rocky & Carlo's Rules!!

This is the best place to eat. The food is so delicious and amazing. It’s cooked fresh and hot. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. I got the Wednesday special, brucioloni. It was so delicious with the Mac and cheese and eggplant dressing. You leave hungry, something is wrong with you.

What a great place!! This place has been a well-known local gem since 1965. Huge potions of some of the best local tasting fare. The motto: “Be nice or leave” & “Ladies invited”. You will not, simply will not, be disappointed with a visit to Rocky & Carlo’s!

We have driven by Rocky & Carlo’s Restaurant & Bar dozens of times and never really noticed it. Friends told me it was great so we made a trip there. The place is very casual with really good food and service. Most of the other clients I spoke with were regulars, a good sign. The portions are huge! One order could have easily fed us both. Definitely on my list of regular places to go from now on.

First time ever eating here. The food was great and they give you very large portions for the price. Staff were awesome and the atmosphere was great. Will def come back. I got the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. My partner ( officer) got mac and cheese with brown gravy and a roast beef poboy.

I was in New Orleans to check out a shooting range I had seen on YouTube Neutral Ground Gun Company (@neutralgroundguncompany) and after the visit asked for recommendations on local fare. Being allergic to shellfish (and it is Crawfish season) they pointed me to Rocky and Carlos, a local establishment that has been there over 50 years. Well, I made my way over to them and I’m glad I did. It’s a quaint spot with lots of parking (around back) and a cool diner vibe inside. They have a really nice hot food counter, but I was told I had to order the “Beef Sandwich, Dressed”. I did as I was told. Boy am I glad I did!! I got a huge sandwich on a po’boy roll with some very flavorful beef and gravy. The dressed part was tomatoes, lettuce and not sure what else but it was awesome. I am glad they had napkin dispensers on the table because I used enough to cause a paper shortage. It was SO messy and SO good. After finishing half I had to stop to take the other half back to the hotel. I was told the Veal Parmigiana was the special Thursdays and so I will be back then. Everything looked and smelled so good. The dining room was spotless and the employees seemed happy and friendly. When in New Orleans area this place is worth the trip! and to top it off “ Ladies Invited”
