Classic Foods and Cocktails Invented in the San Francisco Bay Area | Eater SF

"There’s no question that rocky road ice cream — a classic chocolate flavor with nuts and marshmallows — was invented in Oakland. There’s also no question that the name is a joke about the Great Depression, the crunchy flavor intended as a sweet antidote to tough times. The only question is who invented it first: 120-year-old, independently-owned Oakland soda fountain Fentons Creamery, or equally ancient Dreyer’s, now owned by Nestle but still headquartered in Oakland. According to the Dreyer’s side of the story, ice cream maker William Dreyer invented the flavor after he teamed up with candy maker Joseph Edy to open Edy’s Grand Ice Cream in 1928 — so-named for its home on Oakland’s Grand Avenue. (Side story: The Edy’s name was later changed to Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream by William Dreyer, Jr, though the Dreyer’s company still uses the name Edy’s in Eastern markets to differentiate Dreyer’s from competitor Breyers ice cream). Joseph Edy, a candy maker, had already combined chocolate, nuts, and marshmallows in candy bar form, and William Breyer purportedly adapted the combination to ice cream, cutting the only marshmallows available at the time, which were large, with his wife’s sewing scissors. Fentons story is essentially the same, asserting that Dreyer and Edy stole the name and idea from Fentons candy maker George Farren. Hold on: Why fight over the innovation of adding a few ingredients to ice cream? Sure, in today’s Ben and Jerry’s world, rocky road might not seem to stand out, but at the time, it was a big step forward, since only flavors like strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate were commonly available. — Caleb Pershan" - Jay C. I’ve been going to Rocky Road Ice Cream for years, and they never disappoint with their wide variety of flavors and options. (See the menu pictures I attached) Parking is never an issue, since there are several spaces. The same goes for seating; they have tons of tables and chairs—perfect for families and friends looking for a way to cool down during the summer. The service is efficient; the maximum wait is around 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the number of people.

What a great little stop here at Rocky Road Ice Cream right off 21! Can't go wrong with any of the ice cream options, but if we had to recommend, you definitely need to check out the Coconut Explosion ice cream cup! Amazing and flavorful more than you could imagine!

I would give them a zero if I could! Horrible customer service. The young little manager needs to realize what it means to be a manager. Because her mother owns the place does not give her the right to have a cocky entitled attitude and the mother should be ashamed of herself raising her child to think that that's acceptable. If a customer has a complaint you should take it as knowledge not use it as a power trip. So disappointed that we stopped there and wasted our money! Beware. If your food is not what you thought it would be, it is YOUR problem! THEY DO NOT BELONG RUNNING A BUSINESS.

My sister has seen this place on the side of the highway and we finally made the stop. Was very worthwhile. Great prices and the food hit the spot. They have more than enough options for some real food in addition to their delicious ice cream. They didn't have a turtle sundae on the menu but made on for me. I'd definitely go back again.

Yelp
Perfect location for ice cream! Super close to the climbing crags and other nature spots! I went during the heat wave a few weeks ago, and it was exactly what we needed after a long hot day outside! Menu was huge so there's something for everyone!

Yelp
DON'T BOTHER!!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I think this is the first time I have ever been to an establishment where my food has been under par and when bringing it to their attention they basically laughed. The young little manager thinks that because her mother owns the place she can treat people however she would like. Unacceptable behavior. I am so disappointed that I wasted my money. If that's how they run a business they shouldn't be in business. If you're going to run a business geared toward customer service, then at least have some customer service skills! I would give them a zero if I could just based on their attitudes alone.

Yelp
Great little drive in which started several years ago with just ice cream. Now they have numerous food items in addition to ice cream dishes. My wife LOVES the banana split, made like in the old days! They have sundaes, and flurries as well as numerous other delights! Check the web site for full menu and HOURS. On ocassion it is closed even when it is supposed to be open. We like it because it is just 5 minutes away!!! Give it a try!
