Roderick's BBQ

I was in the mood for some BBQ and had been wanting to try Roderick's for a while, and the stars finally aligned to try them out. I drive by here all the time, and I know this place is small and not really dine-in friendly, so I ordered online to go. Honey ordered the rib plate with yams and baked beans. I ordered the rib and link plate with mac and cheese and potato salad. The online order (DoorDash) status said it would be 25 to 35 minutes before we could pick up our food. Coming from Hayward, that was perfect timing. When I arrived, there was a small line. "Unc" was in the back making plates, and the young lady up front seemed a little overwhelmed, but she was doing her best. Unc came from the back with our plates and asked for the online purchase verification. I thanked him, he told me to have a good day, and I went on my way. The food was good, pricey but good. We spent 66 dollars on the two plates ordering DoorDash. Honey is from Texas, so she’s not a big fan of pre-sauced meat; she says it hides the true quality of the meat. The online order form doesn't let you put the sauce on the side. However, the ribs were tender, peeled off the bone easily, and were seasoned just right. The link was great; I don’t think you’ll find that kind of link in a grocery store. The mac and cheese has a hint of garlic in it, which was surprising in a good way. The yams had the right amount of sweetness to them, not too sugary or overpowered by cinnamon and nutmeg. The beans were good too, just standard baked beans without extras. The potato salad was different; the cut of the potatoes was unique and not too soft. It was good, just not what I’m used to, so I don't think I would order that again. Overall, Roderick’s is good BBQ. I would come back, I also want to try their fried cat fish.

Had a delicious sandwich with a side of macaroni 🥪🧀—the sandwich was full of flavor! The macaroni could use a bit more love, but I’ll definitely be back because the rest of the menu looks amazing 😋. Service was excellent, and I really enjoyed watching the owner personally greet all of his customers. We had a great conversation—such a kind and welcoming person. I truly wish his business continued success! 🙌 Highly recommend giving this place a visit!

I had a delicious bbq chicken sandwich with the freshest crunchiest coleslaw. Not been having an appetite these days but this revived me and hit the spot. Brandon who took and prepared my ordered is the sweetest man. Was happy to chow down on my food and ordered three more to go to feed my kiddos at home. They r gonna love it. Thank you for the good food and your kindness most of all!

I’m picky when it comes to food, especially bbq. The experience at Roderick’s doesn’t disappoint. They also have a really tasty, and affordable lunch menu. The service is very friendly, which is harder to come by now a days. I strongly recommend you give Roderick’s a try.

The ribs are so smacking I had to double back and go get another order of them. Smoked meat falling off the bone. Every bite you can taste it. yams are just right . Sweet but not too sweet. Love it.

I drive by his place all the time today January 24. I decided to go and get some barbecue. I got a two way plate ribs links, two sides with beans and potato salad the potato salad. Iwas OK beans wasn’t to my liking. I ordered a side of yam’s the yams was super good hot very sweet and it was only five dollars for a side. The hot link was good there was hot and I like hot. The sauce was delicious when I go back yes because I would like to try everything on their menu. This is my first time there I give it about a 3 1/2 star. 49ers fan the son spoke on my 49ers hat that I was wearing

Man, talk about old -school soul food! This place takes me back to the days of flavorful bbq and sublime sides like we used to get in Oakland. And their fish is off the hook, too(pun intended). Make your way here when you can and you’ll not be disappointed. They deliver!

Roderick’s Barbeque in Oakland is absolutely worth the stop. I ordered the three-way combo with ribs and smoked chicken, with yams and collard greens. The ribs were flavorful and cooked right, and the smoked chicken was fire. I also ordered a fried chicken plate with red beans and rice, plus peach cobbler. The fried chicken was crispy, the red beans and rice were solid, and the peach cobbler finished everything off perfectly. Reading this review is already too much time wasted. Go try them now.

I love barbecue and heard good things about Roderick's so I had to try. I got the BBQ pork ribs that came with two sides...I chose the mac and cheese and collard greens. I also had a mango peach kool-aid. DELICIOUS!!! I thought the rib plate was generous as it came with five bones and were tender with a nice smoky flavor. I had the BBQ sauce on the side and also enjoyed the sauce. The whole meal came to $32. Well worth it:) The gentleman helping me was friendly and the service was good. They had three televisions with various college football games going on so if your favorite team was playing, there's a good chance you'll catch the game there. There's indoor and outdoor seating, too. There's a small parking lot on front that was full but I was able to find parking on the side street next to the gas station. I love supporting black owned businesses and look forward to returning:)

We didn't get any food, but it looked pretty good. The service well they didn't have enough bartenders the night that we came so the service was terrible but the ambience was really great. There was a fun DJ the vibe was good. It was very difficult. We did about 35 minutes at the bar on a full house to even get a drink, but we were visiting from out of town and yes, we had a great time next time. We'll definitely try the food and we would suggest going back. There's lots of parking at their own private lot. It was easy to find and overall it was pretty fun and friendly.

Food was so delicious! Owner was really sweet and accommodating and gave my friend and I a bunch of samples. Definitely would come again. Restaurant was clean and had good ambiance.

It's very extremely upsetting when you have guests over so order BBq to be delivered and so you purchase a 4 meat combo with two sides but This restaurant only packs the the 4 meat combo with NO SIDES. The only response the owner has to say when you call him is...take it up with your 3rd Party delivery service! I will NEVER EVER order anything else from this BBq restaurant. Buyers be WARNED because you can't quantify missing the two sides when you take it up with the delivery service! Basically, when this restaurant shorts you order like this...it's a form of stealing your hard earned money$....not good.

This is the spot. Everything is really good. I got the mini sample and the red snapper collard greens mac & cheese baked beans and peach cobbler. Food was excellent. I got my order to go, but the inside is very cozy and queue. They had the Lakers game on so that was cool ! The service was great anytime I'm in this area. I always plan to stop by.

This was my second time coming here and both times the food was incredible. I'm a huge fan of the fried catfish. It's fried hard and crispy in big chunks. Brandon has taken care of me both times previously and his customer service is amazing. He brought me hot sauce without asking, made sure I had napkins and was fun to talk to. I'll definitely be back!

Summary: Food was good, not great. I will give it another shot. I am currently in a credential program for Diversity in Leadership Institute at Bishop O'Dowd on Saturdays. We get about an hour to eat and this is LITERALLY right down the street. I ordered for pick up to maximum time. Upon arrival, food was ready with utensils and still warm even 10 minutes after initial time. Parking was plentiful but challenging to navigate as their food truck is blocking a section of the lot and signage isn't helpful. The inside was narrow but had a couple seats. The staff were pleasant and attentive. They pack in the meat which was great. Ribs and Tri Tip were both well seasoned, but drenched with bbq sauce which, for me, takes away from the craftsmanship of the BBQ. Mac and Cheese was solid but not creamy or cheesy. This was the most disappointing thing. Greens were really good. I want to give their fried chicken a shot.

Best Friday food decision in months. Got the 3 meat combo with ribs, chicken & links. Delicious. Sides were Mac & Cheese and Yams. Both were delicious. I live 40min away and wanted a can't miss option, Roderick's always is consistent and good. It's kinda a hidden gem but we need to stop gate keeping and let this place shine for everyone.

Was greeted by I believe the owner as soon as I walked in ! I ordered through DoorDash for pickup however when I was there I wish I would have called ahead to save a couple bucks instead so that's an fyi ! Everything was delish ! Def a spot we would come back to again !

My husband and I went here for the first time. The food was amazing, and the staff were friendly and patient. Their portions were without a doubt enough for lunch the next day. I recommend Roderick's time and time again. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Grabbed a tri-tip sandwich to go between matches at a Vball tournament across the way at Bishop O'Dowd. So glad I did! Everyone was super friendly and the sandwich was delicious! Tender meat and a tasty, tangy sauce. I ordered the coleslaw as a side - crispy, fresh and so full of flavor. Will def be back!

Man listen this place is a diamond in the dirt and me and my wife found it lol. Food was a 15/10 smacking. Not overpowered with seasoning or salt. Im super full and had to wait till my stomach to settle to try the other food out lol. We tried catfish,pulled pork, tri tip,potato salad, chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens. All 100% smacking. Don't take my word for it try it out yourself

The food was soo good! I had the catfish with mac and cheese with collard greens as well as the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad. I didn't get to take a pic of the sandwich because of how good it was! The banana pudding was also great and I would definitely come back!

Wow! Talk about good BBQ and friendly service! We stoped here before the baseball game and man it did not disappoint! Everything from the ribs, tritip, mac and cheese, greens, slaw and catfish sandwich. Will def be back. Thank you Roderick, we are stuffed!!

Love it. Great customer service, the fried catfish is on point. I never get anything else but the fish and kool aid because that's what I like... But they have everything from fried chicken wings to BBQ to desserts, fish and gray side dishes.

2708 98th Ave, Oakland, CA 94605 Wow, I've been missing out! This is Roderick's BBQ Restaurant on 98th Ave, up near the I-580 freeway. This place is usually closed when I drive by, but I had a chance to visit on a Saturday. OMG, a real BBQ place. I ordered the Chicken & Ribs Combo Dinner Meal, with Collard Greens and Baked Beans for sides. Very generous servings! Also, got two rolls and lots of napkins. No complaints about the sides. The BBQ Chicken was boneless dark meat. Absolutely perfectly cooked chicken. Moist and tender. If I only ordered BBQ Chicken, this would be a 5-star review. However, the BBQ Ribs were dry and tough. All the sauce in the world can't fix overcooked BBQ ribs. Sadly, I couldn't chew it and had to toss half of it away. But I promise to return, and maybe just order BBQ Chicken and something else....and bump my rating up! Support Local Business!

The Food and the service were absolutely great a welcoming family environment with exceptional service.

We had the meat platter which is suggested for 2. It was perfect amount for regular man ( appetite) and woman. Glad the bbq was on the side. You can drench dunk etc. as you like. Seasoning is done to compliment their bbq sauce. Greens win. Mac n cheese not bad. Yams were tasty but the texture is a personal call. I'm used to slices in my household. Only disappoint for me was the peach cobbler. Just means we have to go back and have the banana pudding. We'll be back. How can you not...? Good service , clean, normal hours, ohhh duh! Good food hoped and expected for..

Ahhh just like I thought is was gonna be. I got the 2 person meal but used it as 2 meals. Mexican place next door was popping to this day. Saturday early afternoon. Smoked chicken, hot links, collard greens and mac and cheese. BBQ sauce on the side. I had to send a pic to my daughter on the East Coast. We trying it when she comes out here this summer....on her LOL

Succulent pork and beef (haven't tried the chicken yet). I am from the south and miss my BBQ. Roderick's was fantastic, just like roadside shacks from MD to SC and many other states. The sides were also excellent. I had to resist asking to double the potato salad side. It's right off 580. I hope others enjoy their BBQ from Roderick's. I'm going tomorrow.

Had the 2 way combo with the ribs and tri-tip w/sides of mac n cheese and potato salad ($28). Good portions. Ribs and tri tip was good. Mac n cheese was good. Potato salad was ok. It was very bland and potatoes were too chunky for my taste. It reminded of potato salad from a grocery store. Cute restaurant with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is tricky cause it's on a small lot right off a busy street. I went at about 4pm so it wasn't busy. I got a spot out front and received my to go order fast and service was friendly.

Came here after the Oakland zoo. Ordered the chicken sandwich and the tri-tip sandwich lunch special, both were phenomenal. I'm not normally a chicken fan but it was moist and cooked to perfection. We also got the Mac and cheese, coleslaw and fries. The fries were particularly delicious. Will definitely be back.

I just don't know where to start with this review . When I first walked in I was hit with a warm greeting + the aromas of some good cookin' that's always a great sign. Since this was my first time I decided to get the one meat two sides combo and believe me when I say this it did not disappoint the food was so delicious. I just want to shout out Brandon and Rosa!! Great food! Even GREATER service!! Got the ribs and the tri tip - tender, flavorful and DELICIOUS! As a Tennessean who KNOWS barbecue, I can honestly say Roderick 's does TOO! And I'm not gon' even talk about the Kool Aid!! Dat GUMMIT!!!!

This place has some great food. Amazing parking is a little tight but it's worth it. The food is great and the owner is very friendly and very nice and has a lot of history and barbecue places. I would recommend this place if you want some good barbecue.

I was having a bad day but went to Roderick's to pick up lunch for a co worker. I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly everyone was. Roderick was particularly awesome. And of course the food was amazing. I highly recommend Roderick's for the great food and exceptional customer service. Thank you for making a crappy day so much better.

Updating to five stars across the board. This is the best BBQ I've had in a few years. I've been eating here 2-3 times a week since finding this gem and their customer service is top tier. They really appreciate their customers and listen if you have any feedback. If you're looking for authentic BBQ in the Bay Area this is definitely the place to go

Great service and great food. The catfish is quite delicious and now they have snapper. Yum, yum, yummy. The bbq is the best around. When I want bbq or catfish I first go to Roderick's. Great venue for events. I hosted my own event there and it was awesome. Loved the Afro-Caribbean dancing lessons that were there.

Rodrick is a great family restaurant. Their food is good, but I've had better. their customer service is excellent. Everyone is polite and you get exactly the experience you came for.

So disappointed. First time customer, ordered the rib dinner. The ribs were 85% fat and 15% tough stringy meat. What a bummer.

I've been coming to Roderick's for 20 years. Absolutely the best tasting food and customer service. The place is clean, safe location and always a family friendly place. Best dining experience as I always leave in higher spirits.

Best BBQ EVER! I drive from San Jose just for a plate! Never tried something that I didn't love! Fire food and imma be honest... The hospitality is unmatched! You literally walk in wanting some amazing BBQ that you can smell from your car- and walk out- FAMILY! I'm sorry but you don't get that anywhere these days! This whole establishment is amazing! You won't want to hurry up and leave.. You're gonna want to stay awhile and mingle with great conversation! Feel the difference it makes to eat at a family business vs a chain where the food is mid at best! I love the greens, brisket, ribs, catfish, etc. Everything is so delicious!

The food was delicious and the service is excellent. And they are great for private parties. The outdoor ambience is wonderful. So if you in Oakland California stop by and check out the outdoor audience, it's lovely. And ask for Brandon. When you stop by to have a bite to eat.

I got the 3 meats combo with 2 sides. BBQ ribs, BBQ chickens, and BbQ trị tips. Greens and Mac-Cheese. I also got a Large blue/cheery Kool-aid and Medium Purple Haze Kool-Aid. The total came out to about $51 dollars. Overpriced, food was alright but not how people made it out to be. But I know everybody has different taste buds. The chicken was juicy, the ribs and tri tips. Hmmm it's ok. I wasn't a fan of the greens I believe it was over seasoned. Mac cheese were ok. BBQ sauce good. I'll definitely come back to try something different on the menu.

What's up Homie!!! Came to my Mind !!!! When I Saw Rodericks Food Truck at the Oakland Airport!!!! This was my Chance to give them a try!!! I rolled up with my Whip and Doubled Parked. I then Strolled up and Perused the Menu Board!!!! The nice gentlemen in the Food Truck asked for my Order?? I Ordered the Chicken Wings and French Fries!!! I paid by Credit Card and was told it would be 15 minutes to Cook and Prepare my Order. Sounds good to me!!! 15 minutes later I had my chicken wings!!! The only drag was when the cook went to hand me my chicken wings he dropped one on the ground oh well stuff happens I guess!! Chicken wings have a nice flavor to them and we're very crispy.!!! For all these reasons this is a Baller On a Budget Approved Establishment!!!!!

I've been meaning to try this spot for years and finally got the chance. The Tri-tip beef sandy was delicious, possibly the best tri-tip I've ever had, certainly too 5. Homemade slaw was great paired with the sauce, and I felt at home topping it off with grape koolaid! I was lucky to meet Rodrick himself and was well impressed with their attentive yet easygoing manner. Don't be fooled by the limited parking in front, they've got a big place with plenty of indoor seating and a nice deck out back.

After walking the shoreline and a few other activities... a desire for fried fish, peach cobbler and Mac & cheese led us to Rodricks barbecue on a Friday evening. For me, the fish was fried, perfectly crunchy on the outside, and hot and juicy on the inside. The fish was not dropped until the order was placed the yams were scrumptious. I did taste from someone else's plate. Happy to find another place other than Everett and Jones to go for a barbecue. If my heart and calories could handle it, I would go again today. The owner was very accommodating and full of information. Glad to see him back in business. If you are in the area check at this spot.

I've been wanting to try this place forever. Each and every time I would pass by, the open sign would be off. Once again I passed by, not expecting anything but an empty lot. I could not believe the restaurant was open!!! The pictures and reviews were all positive so I was looking forward to some good long anticipated grub. I ordered the 4 way which came with 3 sides. I choose the potato salad, macaroni and cheese and yams. There were patrons dining inside and I asked if they had any recommendations other than the bbq i had already ordered. They vouched for the catfish sandwich, so I went back to the register and placed another order for that. The food did not disappoint!! 5 stars across the board!! The food was absolutely delicious!! Praises to the chef!! Omg!! It is so difficult to find good ole bbq these days. Not to mention good sides too!! I personally didn't get a taste of the fish. BUT, the person who had the sandwich said that it was the best fried fish in Oakland. They are 60+, so I don't take that comment lightly lol. I will be getting some fish for myself next time. I got to the restaurant around 5pm on a Saturday. The close time is listed as 7pm online. Around 5:50pm he locked the door and said he was closing early bc he had a catering event that evening. That was confirmation for me that the restaurant hours are not 'locked' in. If you don't live near by, maybe call before you come. Or maybe I have had bad luck and he is actually open more often than not. It's worth figuring out though!! The food is so bomb.

The food was so satisfying I immediately needed my pillow! but then I got so sad, I drove back up there when they were closed to check and see if it was my Mama in the back making their greens and macaroni & cheese. Now, not only am I full and satisfied, but I'm filled with the taste and smells of my mother's kitchen. Ya'll betta get ya'lls self down their.

On the way back from hitting range balls at Chabot Golf Course, I stopped at the inexpensive gas station on 98th Street. My wife, who grew up in Oakland, suggested I try out the barbeque place next door. Even though we don't eat out often because she's an excellent cook, she likes to support local businesses. I ordered the TriTip and Smoked Ribs combo. I got cole slaw and collard greens for sides. An engaging man asked for my name for the to go order so I asked for his. "I'm Roderick. I run this with my son." He said he was going to throw in a yam side order because I might like it. I could feel the pride of Roderick as I received my order. On a rough ride home up the hill, I was fortunate to arrive home without the package tumbling off the seat., I hoped I didn't mash everything together navigating the bumpy terrain as I had done in the past. Upon opening the order at the kitchen table, the plating was excellent, especially for food in a plastic container. Relief for me and good feel number two. My wife tried the sauce first, separated as it should be, and said it was too sweet for me. She added hot sauce but kept it as it was for her sister and her mom who was joining us. She tasted the yam side and also declared it a little sweet. I reminded her how sweet her Thanksgiving yams are with all the butter and cinnamon. By the end of the meal, she declared the yams as her favorite side dish. I liked the collard greens. They were healthy, looked good and tasted great. Try them, you'll like them. The main course meats were tasty and plentiful. Although the order was probably supposed to feed two people, we had plenty for lunch for the four of us. Hats off to you Roderick. Although, we like to try different places, we will be back.

I absolutely love bbq. I'm always looking for a good bbq place. Today was the first time I've seen Roderick's on Door Dash so I had to try it. I am always hesitant to get the chicken because EVERY place I have tried so far has overcooked, dried out chicken. NOT RODERICK's!! I got myself the chicken & rib combo and my mom the mini sampler. As I was eating my chicken I was like "Damn, this chicken is so damn tender and you could see the juice coming out." At that same moment my mom came over to me and said "this bbq place has the best chicken out of all the places you've ordered from!" I told her I was thinking the same thing. Go check it out!! You won't be disappointed. I just found my GO-TO bbq spot from now on.

Best in town! Great ambiance, family owned local business. Called ahead and got the catfish Mac and cheese and Yams pick pick up before heading to the Oakland Zoo GlowZafari, they had it ready for me, great service. Kids loved it!

Really a gem of a restaurant in Oakland! Me and my co workers came in and was greeted by the owner Roderick himself and stated what brings us in we said we read Yelp and had good reviews so we decided to eat here. The owner stated we will not be disappointed and he was right my Tri tip sandwich was so good and moist ! The staff was super friendly too from the cashier and the cook who is the owners son excellent customer service! We definitely coming back with more of our co workers soon!!!

Always noticed this place never stopped until we did when we were craving some new bbq food. We both ordered the links with 2 sides. I got potato salad and baked beans, my boyfriend got greens and potato salad. The food was good, not bad. I wish the hot links were actually hot but they weren't. My sides were pretty good. I truly just wish the links were hotter. Lemonade was good and freshly squeezed. Customer service was nice! It was pretty packed we were there on a Saturday afternoon. I would be back and recommend!!
