Rodney’s Oyster House | Bon Appétit

"GO HERE: for the huge variety of fresh oysters at Rodney’s Oyster House, skillfully shucked by a team of very handsome men (win-win!). ORDER THE: day’s raw oysters by the dozen (keep an eye out for Royal Miyagi, Kusshi, and Raspberry Point) and some old-school favorites, like New England clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, and crab cakes. Order a British Columbian wine, like the crisp Burrowing Owl Pinot Gris. THE VIBE IS: noisy and fun, with customers catching up with their go-to bartenders and enjoying life, Cape Cod–style (a.k.a. wearing boat shoes). PRACTICAL STUFF: Open every day: Monday to Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. You can reserve a spot by phone for either the raucous Yaletown original or the more intimate Gastown location. —Lindsay Anderson" - Condé Nast

A Must-Visit for Seafood Lovers! Rodney’s is a gem! The oysters were absolutely top-notch — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We also had the clams and calamari, and both were delicious and perfectly cooked. The service was great — a friendly and attentive server named Justin took care of us and added to the overall great vibe. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, the kind of place you want to linger. Can’t wait to come back!

We travel all the time and Vancouver is a place we have been back to around 20 times. Rodney’s Oyster House in Yaletown is a gem and sits atop our TOP 3 restaurants in Vancouver. We have already been twice during this current visit. The vibe is outstanding. The servers and staff are quirky, fun, talkative and helpful and this has been the same on all of our visit over the last 10 years since we first discovered Rodney’s. We almost always go during Happy Hour. I love PNW Oysters and in particular medium size with a lower salinity level. Well guess what Restaurant serves this type to perfection – Rodney’s! They most often serve Fannie Bay Oysters and the taste is the best of all the oyster places we have tried. Other Happy Hour choices we love/loved include the Halibut Tacos and the Garlic Prawns Skillet. This last time we tried the Lobster sliders off of the main menu and they were fantastic. The Happy Hour pale ale beer on tap is so cold and so refreshing. The Happy Hour red wine is the only no go - no thanks item - ha. This place is a home run and must visit for us to recommend to anyone and to go to ourselves every time we visit.

Got to visit this restaurant again after 8 years. The food was still good, and the Sunseeker oyster was our favorite. The restaurant has a casual dining vibe—great for hanging out with friends, though it can be quite loud. The service felt very casual, sometimes crossing the line into rude. Overall, it was a nice experience, just not because of the service.

Google
Stopped in for an early dinner before a wine tasting event and arrived just in time for Happy Hour at 5pm. The $2.95 oysters were fresh and succulent, an excellent deal. We also ordered the crab dip, which was rich and flavorful, though it could’ve used a bit more bread for scooping. The place was packed, so I was glad to have booked ahead.

Last time I visited this restaurant, I ordered a dish but wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be raw. When I asked, the staff were incredibly polite and helpful they quickly cooked it for me and brought it back in no time. As always, this place is amazing, with its own unique vibe and excellent service. Highly recommend!

Google
If someone were to ask me for my favorite seafood restaurant on earth, Rodney's Oyster House in Vancouver would be towards the top of that list! From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a lively and welcoming atmosphere, with incredibly knowledgeable staff that are passionate about their oysters, guiding you through the impressive selection with genuine enthusiasm. And the oysters themselves? Simply divine – so fresh, briny, and perfectly shucked. Beyond the stellar oysters, the rest of the seafood menu is equally impressive, with dishes bursting with flavor. The service is top-notch, attentive without being intrusive. It's the perfect spot for a special occasion or a casual night out with friends. Five stars all the way – a must-visit for any seafood lover in Vancouver!

Google
Stopped here by accident and had oysters. They were out of 2 beers i picked. Food was great, staff was great. But I felt the oysters were a bit pricey especially for the size. But no doubt they where very delicious. And they had the nfl playoffs on for us. Thanks.

Google
Came here for one of the nights on my honeymoon on the recommendation that they had amazing fresh seafood. I’m from the US east coast but moved to Ohio several years ago. Ever since it’s been hard to be impressed by any seafood so whenever I’m near a coast I alway go. I read that Vancouver was praised for their crabs so I came here with the intent of trying a whole Dungeness crab. I was NOT disappointed. The crab: Was very fresh, sweet and very tender and a decent size for the price. Happy hour oysters: Did not intend to get these but they were very delicious and fresh. They had a less fishy taste than when I’ve gotten them from other places. Every table had oysters on it so it’s wildly popular there. New England Clam Chowder: Best chowder I’ve had in a long time. Great texture, not too gloopy or watery, perfect amount of pepper-taste, and a hint of a Smokey spice in each bite. AND chocked FULL of clam bits. Drinks: The house wine and lager match really well with the fresh seafood. And they fill those cups to the top!

Yelp
Wanted to try some good seafood out on our trip to Vancouver and saw this popular spot. Everything we got was amazing! We got a dozen oysters (mixed) to start. Definitely get these here! All of the oysters were so fresh and each different breed had a different texture. The Lobster and Shrimp rolls really surprised us! Don't let the fact that they are just sliders fool you. These were filled with seafood with the kicker being the toasty Buns doused in butter. Get these too! The clams cooked in a garlic, wine sauce was comforting. Make sure to grab some bread to dip into that wonderful broth (or drink it straight from the bowl). The clam chowder was hot and comforting; nice addition to the rest of the dishes. Definitely a must try place if you love all things seafood.

Yelp
Found my new favorite seafood restaurant! We made reservations for a sat night and was able to find nearby street parking. The restaurant itself is very small but lively. We ordered: -lobster and shrimp roll -clam chowder -clams -oysters Everything was so good and fresh. The star of the night was the lobster and shrimp rolls, they were generous with the fillings and I loved thee extra crunchy bread. It created a really good crunchy texture to the dish. The oysters were also all very good and not fishy at all. We loved the variety of sauces they provided for the oysters too.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour and ordered a couple of apps to share with our drinks. Halibut Bites - Tasty, lightly breaded and was overall good Lobster Sliders - Flavourful and the slider was light and had a good crunch from the celery in the mix Oysters - Super fresh and had a great selection of hot sauces to choose from Great spot for happy hour and overall service was also great - will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Rodneys is a no frills, delicious seafood restaurant. I especially love their selection of oysters. They also have a good happy hour. All of the oysters were amazing today! Meaty, fresh, a touch of brine west coast oysters. The halibut bites were super soft, fresh and delicious with the sauce, the sauce had a nice kick of spice. The clam chowder was decent. Definitely always a must when visiting Vancouver BC Our server Ian was delightful and gave wonderful recommendations.

Yelp
Such a fun vibe, great service, and delicious food! Reservations are definitely recommended (especially on the weekend) because it's very popular. I ordered the halibut dish, and it was so flavorful and tender. This a must-go when in Vancouver.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for seafood! We had a dozen oysters, lobster roll (fantastic), butter linguine (simple and delicious, for the kids), fries, and steamed mussels (great). There's a happy hour for oysters that you ask about.

Yelp
We loved this place. The oyster bar guys are great bar tenders and oyster shuckers. You really have to sit at the bar to appreciate the whole experience. We went to this place 3 times while in Vancouver. We very rarely do repeats when traveling but loved this place so much we did a threepeat!!

Yelp
Rodney's is the best spot for fresh raw oysters. They're always so fresh. I always get the Rodney's Caesar with freshly grated horseradish and their famous giant prawn - it's a great combination. Every time we go to Rodney's, the staff are really cheerful and create a great vibe. It's a fun and friendly place to be.
google avatar

Yelp
Had dinner our first night in Vancouver at Rodney's. I would suggest reservations, as it is busy and small. We arrived early for our reservation, but they were able to seat us. Little did I know, Vancouver is a happy hour town! We followed our server's suggestions and got some oysters, lobster and shrimp sliders, garlic prawns, and sourdough. I HIGHLY recommend dipping your sourdough in the sauce the garlic prawns are served in. I would skip the lobster and shrimp sliders next time. A fun stop while in Vancouver!

Yelp
best spot in Yaletown shout out Medhi shout out Ian oysters are great, vibe is great, and the service is top tier.

Yelp
I'm usually not super crazy about raw oysters but Rodney's has converted me. Went for happy hour just to try these oysters and it was so fresh and such a great experience. The raw oysters come with a variety of sauces from mild to super spicy. The Server was very attentive and checks up on you. Their restrooms are also clean which is a plus.

Yelp
Food was amazing! A Coworker and I were able to be sat without a reservation as soon as we walked in. Service was excellent and made sure we were happy and comfortable. Pretty busy on a Tuesday night which should tell you enough about the place. An absolute go to even for someone who doesn't live in the area.

Yelp
Rodney's oyster house is the place to go when it comes to oysters. They are fresh and of great quality, not only that but Rodney's, of course, offers a ton of variety. However, if you're looking for a quiet place to eat, this is not the place. It's buzzing and bumping with chatter and tons of people packed into the space all throughout. The service is as quick as possible with that many patrons to serve and has a bar sort of feel to the place. I can't say much for the main menu items as I gorged myself full of oysters. Kusshi oysters are my favourite as they're not too large and have a very nice sweet finish to them. If you're a fan of huge oysters, I'd reccomend the lighthouse oysters that are embody a briny finish for my flavour profile. They have a fairly priced happy hour called "low tide" where the oysters are nearly $3 a pop; this may not be the "buck a shuck" that existed pre-covid era but for the quality of oysters that Rodney's provides, the deal is more than reasonable. If you're an oyster fan like me, don't miss out on this place.

Yelp
I found this place accidentally but I'm glad I did because it was a vibe! It was a pretty busy restaurant in Yaletown. I just wanted oysters but I got lobster and shrimp roll sliders, pickles, oysters, and great service. First, the music is what made my experience amazing! The staff at the raw bar were jamming to the tunes, and so I felt the freedom to do so as well ! The oysters were delicious but the one downside is they don't serve them with a mignonette, just horseradish I believe. But lobster and shrimp roll sliders were on a brioche crispy bun and served with the pickle. This right here was my fav. I had no idea I'd love it but I did. I highly recommend.

Yelp
My group didn't make reservations for dinner because we weren't sure what time people would be hungry or where we would be wondering to. We initially wanted to check out Fanny Bay Oyster but they had no reservations available. So we called Rodney's to see if they had space for our group of 10 people. Luckily, Rodney was available, so we made our way to the restaurant! We really wanted to try the seafood here. Half of us wanted to eat oysters, while the other half wanted to eat other food besides oysters. So I sat at the non-oyster eating table. -Ocean salad (5/5) - I've never had a seafood salad before, but this salad was so refreshing and nice to eat. Must order. -Atlantic lobster poutine (5/5) - Since we haven't gotten poutine in Vancouver yet, we might as well order some here. This dish was really good. I just keep eating it. Must order. -Hokkaido scallop pasta (5/5) - I love seared scallop anything. The pasta saucy was went really well with the linguine noodles. Must order. -Manilla clams (5/5) - The clams were really good. I don't usually order clams since not all restaurants do a good job with cleaning clams before cooking them. The clam sauce was really good, so we dipped some of the artisan bread that we ordered in the sauce! The restaurant was pretty busy. Another bach party also had a dinner celebration here. The staff was really nice. When it was time for the check, the staff was nice enough to help us split the check even thought we didn't ask for it haha. The seafood here was really good. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We stumbled across this hidden gem on a quite part of Gastown. We sat at the bar and had great service with some friendly conversation. The fresh oysters were great served with freshly grated horseradish...amazing! We also ordered the seafood sliders they where tasty. Good vibe atmosphere with good music playing. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
We were a large group of 8 coming in without a reservation, but luckily we were off peak and they were a Joe to seat us right away. Our server came quickly and greeted us and told us about the happy hour specials. The wine happy hour special was good and very generous pour. The oysters were pretty good as well, I think I'm a sucker for east coast oysters, but these west coast ones were a pretty close second. We just came for apps and drinks and a place to watch the game and this was perfect. Next time we're in town we'll likely come back.

Alex ..

Yelp
I had the steamed mussels-classic wine and garlic prep-while watching World Series. Not crowded for Tuesday in October. Food was great. Friendly service. A "guys" place-didn't see any female staff. Would recommend but maybe on a warmer day which is hard to find in October
google avatar

Yelp
I came into Rodney's oyster house on a Thursday night during happy hour and man this may have been some of the most delicious oysters I have ever had. They oysters were fairly big in size which I love, the freshness was absolutely insane. They tasted phenomenal. Being from Vegas we don't get to enjoy fresh oysters much so anytime I'm traveling I like to go all out. The atmosphere in the restaurant was fun and lively it's not a huge location but it fits a good amount of people. Our server was very attentive and nice. The drinks and draft beer were 10/10. Definitely looking forward to coming back here and enjoying this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is casual and fun and very loud inside. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait 45 minutes but they did squeeze us in which was very appreciated. Our server was fantastic. We had 10mo baby with us, and even though they don't have high chairs, all the servers were so nice and interacted with her in such a friendly way. Food was great, the crusted halibut was amazing. The crispy cauliflower was spicy and had great sauce that really added lots of flavor. Fried calamari was melt in your mouth delicious. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
What is not to love? Guests will feel a distinct maritime aesthetic and chill energy as soon as you enter Rodney's. The team is very eager to welcome you, and the large tables offer plenty of space for drinks and seafood. Dylan was fantastic. I cannot remember a time where I laughed so hard with a server, and we heard plenty of interesting stories and local restaurant and bar recommendations from them. Dylan was great with recommending oysters, too, and we settled on several varieties from multiple North American regions. They also brought us a lazy susan of hot sauces, so, of course, we played Hot Ones with oysters. The drinks were tasty, and I truly enjoyed myself here. You can tell how excellent the food quality is here, and I cannot wait to return on my next trip to Vancouver. My only feedback would be that Yaletown should generally have more patio dining. Why is there so much parking?! Make this area pedestrian and experience-focused.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
This place was very tasty! If you can, make a reservation. We sat at the bar which had a lot of action going on, lots to watch! We shared the lobster and shrimp sliders, they were very tasty! I sampled the clam chowder which was decent. I had the halibut which was very delicious! It was definitely fresh fish and w decent portion. It came with vegetables. Our order had been forgotten but we got free drinks for waiting. Overall, it was w good stop!
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
Happy hour oysters were awesome and fun with all the sauces they give you. The ocean salad and shrimp and lobster sliders were delicious. Portion sizes are on the smaller side so it gets pricey, but the quality of the seafood is top notch. Ambiance is cool and casual, not pretentious like a lot of other Yaletown restaurants
google avatar

Kelven W.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with fresh seafood! We started with a couple dozen fresh oysters. Super fresh and nothing wrong with getting them during their happy hour. Loved their selection of hot sauces along with the horseradish. Deep fried calamari with some freshly sliced jalapeños. Crispy, delicious with just the right crunch of spice to offset the deep fried goodness. Of course we have to have their lobster rolls although it's on a brioche bun instead. A perfect complement with the buttery and sweet bread. Last was their mussels. This might be my favourite as the blend of brininess along with the fresh herbs was a fantastic duo.

Yelp
Impeccable service, Josh and crew are so fun and Josh really took care of us educating us about the different oysters, so good! All the food is amazing Will def be back again, prob tonight, lol!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was a real find. Oysters were delicious and the fresh horse radish was a nice touch. I enjoyed the grilled curry shrimp wile my wife raved about the Dungeness crab. We sat upstairs which was very comfortable. Service was outstanding! The place is loud, so don't plan on a quiet dinner. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Let me just tell you right now, I have never been to Vancouver, I googled where to go and this was top of most lists... So where did we end up? Exactly here! I wanted a lobster roll! I got a lobster roll with a fulfilling side salad and onion rings, seriously so filling. Michael was our original waiter, but sitting at the bar we met many more. I have a picture later to come not featuring Donnie, and let me just tell you THESE BOYS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, the kitchen rocks the food, but these boys say let me see your socks and let me rock them off real quick fast in the most modest way to put it, ((Michael, Jim, Donnie, Seth and Justin (and Justin's accent is only a bonus he is from Australia)). Guys the oysters, the clams, the clam chowder, the scallops and the lobster roll are ALL TO DIE FOR. The vibe in the kitchen was incredible and you get to see it up close and personal if you have doubts or need to go pee. But most importantly back to this bomb food and service, please I beg you to try this. First time Vancouver visiter and this will be a must to go to each and every time!!! And if your manager is reading this guys it's just as much because of you than it is the food!!

A M.

Yelp
Amazing food. The oysters were nothing like we've had before, so meaty and fresh. The server was so attentive but didn't bother is at all, monitored our needs from afar and kept us satisfied. It can get a bit loud/busy during happy hour, but we've never had to wait long for a table. The back room has a quieter ambiance. LOVELY experience

Lulu S.

Yelp
Great fresh oysters, delicous fish and super fun vibe Excellent service Other reviews mentioned the bread wasn't good, we didn't listen but they were right Skip the bread but everything else was great!

Yelp
***This had to be re-posted! They had it removed. We looked at the menu before we decided to eat there. We thought the prices were high, but decided to try anyway. We ordered 3 food items to share. $38.00 seafood pasta $23.00 Calamari $32.00 mussels $9.00 Corona Total with tax and tip $120.00 Please note there was no bread to soak up the wine sauce for the mussels or the pasta. Especially considering what they charge for both. The seafood pasta was extremely small in portion not even 500 ml worth. A few mussells and a few clams with 2 prawns. Total rip off! The taste was average. The Calamari was a joke! They serve this in a miniture cast iron casserole dishbabout 4", smaller than my female hand. They are stacked on top of each other and the taziki was drizzled on top. Making the entired dish soggy. Not to mention the extremely small portion size. The worst part was the mussels. Although fresh, I have never seen mussells so small. The meat itself was the size of my pinky nail on my hand. Both of us have never seen muses so small. All of them shelled would not have measured more than 1/3 to 1/2 cup. What a joke! I'm shocked that this place is still in business. SHOCKED! There is no value for your money here. I complained about the portions when the food arrived at the table, and I complained when we paid the bill. I apologized to my date for suggesting this place. I only suggested it because of the reviews, and I have never tried them before. We were not even close to being full after spending $120.00 here. Right after we went to Skewers up the street and shared a Greek platter for $29.00. This placed should be embarrassed and ashamed for serving such portions for average to below-average food. As I said SHOCKED they are still in business!

Diana H.

Yelp
We tried this place while waiting to go on a cruise, it was so delicious! We ordered raw oysters so fresh and silky, halibut bites to die for, crab dip and lobster shrimp sliders, everything so good! Highly recommended.

Yelp
We found this place on Yelp and it did NOT disappoint. The staff was courteous and checked on us frequently. The food was really, really good. We were looking for a small local favorite restaurant and this place was simply a hidden gem...
google avatar

Kelly N.

Yelp
Walked in at 4:05 (they open at 4) and the bunch of guys weren't even half ready just chatting away while there were people lining up. Rude enough to yell at customers saying that while the door is open they aren't ready yet. What a joke. Tells you a lot about the level of customer service. No thanks. There are many other choices for better oyster bars in Vancouver these days. Should have known better when calling and no one bothered picking the line prior. Subsequently went to Chewies way better service.

Bongo_cat M.

Yelp
Great ambiance and staff. Staff totally made the night. Best oysters we've ever had. Will be recommending to anyone going to Vancouver.
google avatar

Jo Y.

Yelp
Food was good, was little smaller inside than I expected. The food didn't take long before coming out and the platting was good and gave fish house vibes but clean and nice ones
google avatar

Joseph P.

Yelp
Great spot; always lively, and the decor makes it an experience just to see. The food is always reliably good; fresh and tasty. And the service is prompt and attentive. And you feel welcome. It's a great place for savvy and less than savvy seafood eaters; something for everybody.

Shawna B.

Yelp
Food was great, nice little place with unique ambiance. Would go back again to try crab.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
An amazing happy hour!! Look at that spread ordered almost everything on the happy hour menu and also got the lobster poutine and clam chowder. Lobster poutine was $25 but had a good amount of lobster. Also ordered a few raw oysters that were super fresh. 10/10 would recommend to anyone coming to this area
google avatar

Yelp
WOW..... this place really was the spot in Vancouver! We're not really "raw oyster" people but the guys taught us a lot about oysters and we fell in love! We found the ones we liked and went back multiple times. We were bummed that we didn't get names first night but Dillion, John and Barbra were great and made it fun! The music was rocking. GET RESERVATIONS to be safe. We will be back this spring 23. Donovan & Caitlin

Yelp
We just got into Vancouver and had not eaten all day. Since we were surrounded by water, we decided on seafood for dinner. We were seated right away. The restaurant was hopping at 5pm. We were greeted by our server Dillon. He reminded me of a cool surfer dude...from Canada??? Make no mistake from my earlier comment, he was a professional waiter who was confident with skills. He was fun, and made our experience memorable. We had several dishes. Did I say we were starved? We started with calamari. Tender and crispy it was a nice start. We followed with shrimp cocktail, halibut bites, and spicy popcorn shrimp. All dishes were fresh and prepared with care and thought. Just the right amount of accompanying sauce, garnish, and seasoning. This is a fun and lively place with great wait staff and fresh seafood. This is a must stop if staying downtown Vancouver.

Yelp
Okay, I'm on vacation, so I'm trying to take the rose colored shades off: I thought this was a great place! Quirky interior giving it a nice deeply nautical vibe that completely escaped me when I walked in here. The oysters, you asked? Yeah, those oysters were pretty damn good; sweet, briny and some of the most decent sized bivalves I've ever gotten in a dozen! Ooooh, did I mention FRESH GRATED HORSERADISH? Yeah, that's right, fresh grated horseradish, and it was delish. I've seen some of the reviews complaining about the price and I would say if you can find an equally good product for a better price then you are a luckier person than I. If I visit Vancouver again I would make the trip.
google avatar

Munz L.

Yelp
We've been going to this restaurant over many years and have recently noticed the drop in quality. Their prices have gone up which is acceptable in today's economy but we do expect the quality to stay just as good ! Unfortunately that did not deliver. My husband's halibut and chips looked like the halibut was processed from frozen out of the box. Portion of our friend's lobster shrimp sandwich was smaller than what I remembered it to be and the plating was pathetic. My clams was ok but not great. It's a shame because we have always enjoyed going to Rodney's as one of our neighbour joints. For what you pay and what you get - nah ..... it's not worth it anymore ! Service remains good.
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Went here for happy hour after a recommendation from a friend. They have great local oysters for pretty cheap during HH and some beers and wine. The oysters were fresh and they had so many unique house-made sauces in the side. Each were excellent! Also had the rock crab simmered in garlic butter sauce. I could drink that sauce it's it! The service was a bit slow but overall very friendly. I do think they should add some cocktails and other appetizers to their happy hour menu, as I was hoping for more options.
google avatar

Caitlin C.

Yelp
I had the mussels & they were great. The ambiance is a little bit loud & crazy, but fun.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place and great food and great service. Ambiance is awesome and highly recommend. Friendly staff just need to tone down the testosterone vibe with few servers but hey, to each is own. We were still treated nicely and the food is great.

Yelp
We were looking for seafood in Vancouver and this place was recommended by several different folks. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, and made great recommendations. The wine pours are fantastic. We sat upstairs and had a comfortable table.

Megan ..

Yelp
the BEST spot. Amazing oysters, but definitely try the Louisiana crab dip with the garlic bread - it's to die for. We also had mussels and sourdough bread - everything was incredible. Great service and amazing ambiance. One of the best meals we had in Vancouver!

Mary L.

Yelp
Pathetically small portions and exorbitant prices, almost 200 dollars, 2 of which entrees, no drinks except one coke. Don't think I'll ever go back. Ambiance not bad but music too loud.
