The Best Restaurants in Bellingham, Washington | Eater Seattle

"A newcomer on the Bellingham scene, Roe has become instantly beloved with its ever-changing menu of local, seasonal seafood and vegetables. It also happens to make one of the best burgers in the city and a truly excellent plate of steak frites. Plates are designed for sharing, like ricotta gnocchi with maitake mushrooms, or Dungeness crab on a hashbrown, and go perfectly with a cocktail or a glass from the well-curated wine list. The well-lit, plant-strewn dining room is comfortable, or find a seat at the chef’s counter or in the tiny bar next door." - Jessamyn Tuttle

Wonderfully prepared dishes filled with flavor within an atmosphere that felt like I was in Europe. Roe was bustling at 6pm on a Thursday night. We sat at the small bar and enjoyed watching the craft cocktails being made. Our food was delivered surprisingly fast and the entire staff was friendly.

Stopped here on a road trip from Portland to Vancouver, BC, and wow! What a find. The staff were awesome: super friendly, knew their stuff, and made the whole experience feel really welcoming. And the food? Unreal. I had the best steak I’ve had in a long time, perfectly seared and packed with flavor. Every dish was amazing. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m passing through.

7/18/25 update i will never complain again. i came here for my birthday meal because it was so amazing last time and they absolutely blew me away with how divine the food and drinks were. i got the rutabaga which was a culinary EXPERIENCE and my fiance got the bavette which was GENUINELY the best steak either of us g have ever eaten. there were no service delays or anything, genuinely had one of the best meals of my life. go here. fr. okay girlies. this was the BEST MEAL i have had in bellingham in a HOT minute. the space is adorable too!!! absolutely in love with the art on the walls. The drinks? immaculate. the salmon montadito? divine. the black cod? delicious. and the ricotta gnocchi? i would give up my hypothetical first born for a lifetime supply of it. the food also came out so fast which was such a pleasant surprise! is it a little pricey? yeah. is it worth the price? absolutely. my one and ONLY complaint is that while the server/host/bartender were all friendly, like VERY friendly, there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of organization. we placed our cocktail order 15-20 minutes before we got them, and while they were delicious, it just seemed a little long (especially because we were seated at the bar). i don’t want to rag on the bartender either because i could tell he was busy! however, i watched 2 other coworkers asked if he needed help and be told no. fair enough, but a 20 minute wait for a drink when the food came out in ten was a little wild. also, the host was the one who came by and took our food order after noticing that the bartender hadn’t taken it yet. which hey, totally fine, but a little weird since we were seated at the bar. last tiny con— i put in an order for a glass of wine while taking the last bites of our entree and it never came. i didn’t want to ask for an update since the cocktails took so long to be made, and we were nearly done with our food with dessert on the way (which by the way, the matcha panacotta is a must try. do yourself a favor.) we weren’t charged for the wine though so we decided to just let it go, no biggie! for one seafood dish, two entrees, two cocktails and dessert it was $150, which for the quality and flavor was absolutely worth it. i’m hoping that next time we come i can change my review to five stars! definitely would recommend checking out this delicious and adorable restaurant.

Finally have eaten here enough times to say Roe absolutely kills it every single time. Just look at these dishes. They’re beautiful. They’re delicious. And the vibes are immaculate 🤌 it really feels like you’re at a big dinner party at a friend’s house with the open kitchen, thrifted dinner plates, and framed art all over the walls. The separate cocktail bar space is super cozy too and the drink menu is on par with the food. We finally have a seafood restaurant in Bellingham I’m excited to go to! But they also have a damn good burger 🤤 Love this space and the owners are truly genuine people who have brought something special to this little town. I ❤️Roe 🐟

Excellent food and service. Had the salmon on focaccia which was perfectly balanced with great texture. The crab and hash brown was a whimsical and tasty dish. But the vegetables stole the show! The radish and pea dish hit the mark in seasonality, flavor, texture and balance.

Google
Roe is hands down the best restaurant in Bellingham! Absolutely loved every bite we had. The crab on hash brown was a fun concept and so delicious, tons of actual crab meat. The gnocchi was the highlight - pillowy, perfectly cooked and I'm already craving it again. Finished with their panna cotta which was light, not too sweet, and topped with the perfect amount of berries and meringue. Great atmosphere and service made the whole experience outstanding. Worth every penny! Pro tip: order their NA margarita but with tequila, it’s hands down the best marg in town - perfectly balanced and not too sweet. But what I really loved about it is the vibe, it’s beautiful, cozy, feels like a French bistro, and has a really cool open kitchen.

Dined here with my septuagenarian mother 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking about it! Atmosphere was vibrant, fun, well-curated, and yet still left space for privacy and connection. The food was incredibly fresh - literally and also figuratively in the ingredient pairings - we just kept ordering more because there were so many items we couldn't pass up the opportunity to try. I had the most amazing bergamot sage martini and will be back to taste through the remainder of that amazing menu!

Every visit to Roe has been excellent, whether a reservation for a celebration or snagging a seat with a view of the chefs firing things up in the kitchen or the cozy bar. It feels like having a dinner party at a friend’s house. The staff are so warm, the food tastes incredible, and there’s always a fun new cocktail to sample. I love that the owners are often trying new things, like a breakfast x coffee collab with Makework or a special menu for holidays like Mother’s Day. They’ve created a great community spot for gathering with friends and family over amazing food and great vibes.

Yelp
Oh my! What to say? Outrageously wonderful! Sam was our host and Mads, our server. We got great help from them. All the descriptions and suggestions were spot on, and they were entirely accommodating. But could not have truly prepared us for the gustatory splendor. We ate: A Dungeness crab concoction that was one of the most divine things I have ever put in my mouth. Focaccia and serrano ham in an Alfredo sauce. A pear salad. Baked or fluffy air-fried parsnip chunks drizzled with honey and savory goodies. Beet salad. Now I have to own that I hate beets. I think they taste like dirt. The salad included cheese, walnuts and other good things. My first bite was delicious--smokey and cheesey. I told my comrades-in-food that the cheese was out of this world! They almost fell on the floor laughing. "You just ate a beet!" They cried. OMG, I would order and eat this whole thing all by myself. Drinks were all lovely and included Imperfect Man (rye), Francisco Sour (fabulous and matched my clothes) and a concoction the barkeep made up that was chocolatey and raspberry. All were delicious. Two delectable desserts (I don't even know what they were, but I'd eat anything here!), and heaven became even more heavenly. The ambiance was very nice--simple and lovely in its simplicity. All the staff were so nice. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Very nice experience overall; this is a great option for dining with a multi-generational family (kids will enjoy the burger, fries, and many of the small plates/veg options; adults will be happy with the playful entrees/beverage program). The decor is charming - "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" presides over a bookcase nook; such a sweet touch. My only minor nit: the seasoning leaned a bit salty on the pastrami croquettes, the crab Hashbrown, and the baby broccoli (the bagna cauda was yum, but brine-yyy). Other dishes were better balanced - here's looking at you, salmon montadito; savory-sweet heaven in a pillowy bite right there. Lucky Bellingham - don't sleep on this neighborhood gem.

Yelp
Felt like I died and went to heaven as I floated out the door! Needless to say, each dish was superbly crafted maximizing all the sensories we experience. Started with the salmon on bruschetta and immediately wanted to order seconds! Service was excellent and loved the ambiance except for the noise level which explains 4 stars in place of 5. Definitely will return!

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed all of our dishes at Roe, we see why it's popular. Only counter reservations were available at our last minute search, but that gave us the working kitchen view and we enjoyed that.

Yelp
Have been three times and each time it has been a wonderful experience. The wait staff is kind and attentive. The ambiance is modern and minimal, great for holding a conversation over a delicious meal. The food is outstanding. We've tried something different each time and are sometimes hesitant, not sure about the ingredients, but each time we've left saying "I've never had a better meal". I love that there's an updated menu with fresh local produce. Our last visit we had the halibut, Roe burger, baby broccoli, and pork skewers. The lack of pictures tells the story of how delicious everything was. I was able to capture the halibut because it was so photo worthy, but it was demolished within moments of taking this pic. So excited to see what's next with Roe. Grateful for unpretentious fine dining in Bellingham.

Yelp
This was my second visit and there will be many more. This is by far the best food in Bellingham! The gnocchi absolutely melts in your mouth and the salmon on focaccia bread with truffle honey butter was the perfect mix of textures and savory and sweet.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. It's our absolute favorite place to get dinner in Bellingham! Their vibe is really cute and hip, but still very authentic and down to earth. The people that work there are really friendly. The food is out of this world. I love the way they put an upscale spin on comfort food classics. I love trying their new seafood dishes that change seasonally, but highly recommend their classic burger too - so good. They just started doing brunch as well, and it's the best brunch in Bellingham. Highly recommend the spicy Bloody Mary!

Yelp
First time eating at Roe and we loved it! I had the oysters and black cod. My Dad got the gnocchi. We both got the happy hour Old Fashioned. Everything tasted amazing! The gnocchi was best that I've had since Giuseppe's restaurant before it closed. Perfectly fluffy. The plating was beautiful as well. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The ambience is cozy, feminine, and eclectic in the best way. It wasn't too loud. The bench seating was comfy. I will definitely be recommending Roe to friends and family. We're already planning on coming back!

Yelp
Incredible menu, drinks and food. Great little spot for cocktails and snacks but was easy to spend $300 for two for a few drinks appetizers, entrees and desserts.

Yelp
Busy with limited servers. The steak is extremely tough and sits on a MOUNTAIN of FRENCH FRIES making it difficult to cut and enjoy. The best part of this experience was sitting at the bar watching the kitchen cooking show. Very well organized and focused. The menu is slightly overpriced but creative. Will return for a second taste

R V.

Yelp
Steak was chewy and service was mediocre. They just opened so maybe kinks need to be ironed out. Nothing special about this restaurant. The dessert was weird. Kiwi parfait of some kind super sour and just not good.

Yelp
Feels like a seattle experience in Bellingham. Beautiful space, open kitchen, terrific service, and amazing menu. Had the oysters, butter leaf salad, burger, and gnocchi. Highly recommend you adding this to your top Bellingham dinner spots. Also parking was super easy compared to Holly and State street restaurants.

Yelp
Stopped by just to ask if a gluten-free diner could be accommodated, and ended up having a terrific unplanned dinner. Great drinks (big fan of the old man and the sea) and food (oysters and caviar with bubbles, sweet potatoes and bavette with wine. Friendly and very helpful staff in a comfortable space. We'll be back Sunday!

Yelp
We loved it! Definitely get a reservation, the restaurant was very popular! The fries were the best we've EVER had, with the gremolata/mayo sauce. We also loved the Dungeness Crab hash brown! The hash brown was crispy, and the crab salad on top was creamy and had some amazing herb flavors. The salmon montadito was very rich- we weren't able to finish it. It had good flavors, but the soft mascarpone yogurt topped with soft (possibly raw?) salmon kind of took away any texture. The rich fattiness mixed with the sweet honey topping was just too much for us. We thought it might be good with smoked salmon instead, and maybe on a crisp crostini bread instead of foccacia. The service was also great and nice ambiance! The decor is very pretty, and the wallpaper in the restroom was so cool!

Yelp
Love the ambiance of this little place, perfect for date night. Loved the unusual items in the menu. We tried the crab appetizer and the Rueben croquettes. Enjoyed both but probably wouldn't order the croquettes again. Very meaty! Shared the steak and frites with peppercorn sauce and it was fabulous! We so need places like this in Bellingham, I wish the owners all the success in the world!!

Yelp
Our daughter treated us to dinner at Roe tonight! What an amazing restaurant this is! We walked in on a Thursday night at 7:30PM and this place was hopping! The staff is so friendly, fun and hard working to make sure everyone is taken care of. The ambience is classy, romantic and cozy. The food is absolutely delicious! We shared; scallop Crudo, shrimp, beet salad and fries! Every item had delicious flavors. We each ordered our own Larger plate; mussel Frites, Ling Cod and Bavette. Each entree was prepared perfect. The desserts were a sweet tooth's dream! I highly recommend the Roe! It will be your new local favorite

Yelp
Just had the very best (without a doubt) meal I have ever had in Bellingham at Roe. I recommend sitting at the chefs counter-u get to see all the dishes as they are being prepared and chat with the chefs. Everything g we had was outstanding. This is the restaurant I have all been waiting for. The service was also so warm and friendly and excellent. Cannot wait to come back.

Carolyn G.

Yelp
This is. By far. The best burger I have ever had. There are no words. Happy hour offers a smaller one for $10. Just go.

Katie N.

Yelp
Amazing food, great happy hour, fantastic service. Brought us an extra (free) serving of a dish because it "took too long to come out" (even though we didn't notice a delay at all!) The Rueben croquettes are so creative and live up to the hype. Awesome bartenders and servers! Great vibe and music! Going to become a staple for us for sure.

Yelp
Delicious food. The mushroom gnocchi is a must! Great atmosphere and service. They offer fun mocktail options. Cool and cozy vibe.

Julie S.

Yelp
Wow, I have found my new favorite restaurant in Bellingham! The food is incredible! There's nothing like this place - the ambience and the professional staff just finish off the incredible food. They really have knocked it out of the park!

Curt R.

Yelp
People and space was great. The food was the worst. The steak was not a recognizable cut of meat. Don't order it! It was tough and chewy and not an expensive piece of steak. They undercooked it and sending it back did not make any improvement. My suggestion would be to offer a top sirloin or better.

Megan T.

Yelp
Omg so delicious and the vibes were immaculate. It always makes me so happy to get something as simple as a cloth napkin now while dining out. The entire restaurant has amazing vibes, very earthy and lively. They had unique plates which we all different, drink menu was so unique and creative. I wish I could've sat closer to the kitchen to be able to see the magic. Our server and hosts and everyone working were so kind and thoughtful. My only suggestion is to possibly offer something vegan, there was only one large plate that was vegetarian but I do think if I would've asked their kitchen would have been willing and able to satisfy any dietary concerns. I wish I could've just walked around this entire restaurant and explored the place it was so cute! Definitely recommend for date night.

Skylor Y.

Yelp
The chef at this place is an absolute genius. The flavors are phenomenal. I highly recommend coming here and ordering everything on the menu. Twice. With a third serving of everything to take home. I love the plants in the restaurant, and the tiling around the bar is beautiful. This place is a must!

Laura D.

Yelp
Excellent service and excellent food! The halibut with caviar sauce and green salad were delicious.

Natasha V.

Yelp
What a great place to have a meal! I was completely impressed with the professionalism and customer service at Roe. Easily the best restaurant in Bellingham with the highest quality of food. The decor and environment is so inviting and lovely to be in. Will definitely be coming back!
