The experience begins with the satisfying crunch of fresh, light tortilla chips, creating a perfect, crisp base for the vibrant salsas. The salsa verde offers a zesty, tangy flavor with a lively heat that builds with each bite, while the salsa roja provides a rich, deep taste with a smooth consistency that complements the chips without being overly thin or too chunky. Imagine a perfect chile relleno as a masterpiece of contrasting textures and harmonious, bold flavors. The exterior is a delicate, yet slightly crunchy, golden batter that crackles with a satisfying sound, revealing hints of a rich, buttery taste and a subtle smokiness from the roasted poblano pepper beneath it. This light, airy shell envelops the tender, fire-roasted pepper, which has a deep, earthy aroma and that serves as the ideal vessel for the hearty filling. The interior of this culinary delight is filled with a savory and aromatic picadillo, a traditional Mexican hash of seasoned ground meat dotted with spices like cinnamon and cloves, and augmented with ingredients like diced potatoes. Each bite offers a succulent explosion of complex, well-balanced flavors that complement the smoky pepper and rich batter. The combination of the crisp, hot exterior and the warm, flavorful interior creates a delightful sensory experience, making this a spectacular chile relleno. The perfectly cooked Mexican rice is fluffy, with individual grains that are tender but not mushy, and a vibrant, inviting red-orange hue. Its aroma is fragrant with notes of toasted rice, garlic, onion, and warm spices like cumin. The flavor is a balanced, rich, and savory blend, with subtle, earthy undertones and a hint of tomato tang, making it a delectable and satisfying side dish on its own. The velvety, delicious refried beans are creamy and smooth, cooked until very soft and then mashed to a luscious consistency. They are a hearty and rich complement the meal, with a deeply savory flavor profile. The texture is buttery and creamy, not dry or stiff—and the taste is authentic, comforting, and packed with a robust, earthy bean flavor. With that being said, I think this is the best Chilli Relleno plate I have ever experienced. Best of all, they serve Mexican Coke here !!! I look forward to returning here again to explore more of the available menu options.

I had a really good experience here! The staff was super friendly and attentive from the moment I walked in. They made sure we had everything we needed and checked on us several times during the meal. The food was good, but what really stood out was the great service — everyone had a positive attitude and made the visit enjoyable. The place was clean, comfortable, and had a nice vibe overall.

Great hidden gem! Excellent happy hour specials! Having lived in San Diego for years, we are kinda food snobs, and this place DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! OMG it was authentic and not greasy! Fresh cilantro, Limes, pico...it was really very very good!!

Christe G.

Google
My husband brought me to this place and OMG no disappointment everything was great, so great that I Forgot to take pictures. The quantity is so great, hot, & fresh. Sarai was so wonderful waitress love it, sorry this is the only picture I got but was so good

Google

Google
Found this when looking for authentic and good mexican food nearby, it was great! The sour cream chicken enchiladas are a little underwhelming but the birria street tacos were to die for. the queso and the salsa was great and so was the sweet tea. the server was super attentive and it wasn’t too busy! 10/10 recommend trying!

Alexandra E.

Google
The food was so good. The menudo was super filling could not finish the taco. 10/10 good service as well

Elizabeth A. H.

Google
The food here was really good! The Chicken Champiñón was very flavorful and had just the right amount of cheese, the Mushroom Enchiladas were also good and had a spicy heat to them. The Margarita was not too sweet. The chips came with two options for salsa, both red and green had a nice heat to them but the green was hotter. We did agree the beans could have used a little salt, but then we were able to salt to taste. The service was great. This restaurant is family friendly and is it still owed by the same family who started the restaurant.

Yelp
Instantly fell in love, will be back. 10/10 Caitlin was so sweet! Definitely a hit spot for San Marcos

Yelp
My first visit and it came highly recommended by friends. Being a smaller sized restaurant, I anticipated some down and dirty Mexican food like Sely's in Schertz, where plates overflowed with eye-popping delights. I ordered a combination plate with a cheese enchilada and a crispy beef taco, rice, and borracho beans. The plate arrived and looked good, but servings were on the meager side, considering the price. The cheese enchilada was just okay, with stringy, tough cheese, as if a microwave had been utilized. Hmmm... The taco was small with a small portion of beef and lots and lots of lettuce and tomato. After taking a long look at the taco shell I decided that it was not pulled from a box of HEB taco shells but was more likely home-fried in the kitchen, but only to an anemic pale brown. No to the dainty crispy beef taco; that was simply disappointing. I asked for a side of mole and it was nice and spicy-rich, but the consistency was way too watery, I was hoping for a nice, thick mole. Chips were on the standard side, I prefer Sely's which have a thicker, toasted corn flavor. Asked twice for lemon for my water but it never arrived. On the positive side, the restaurant is simply designed, nicely decorated, and appeared very clean. I tasted a friend's strawberry margarita and it was perfectly delicious. And that green Serrano salsa was fantastic, I poured it on everything. The rice on the combo plate was very good, and I actually finished it, which I typically ignore in most restaurants. Overall, not my favorite restaurant, but I will be back when it's Margarita time.

Yelp
Wonderful experience at Rogelios! Our waitress Caitlyn was very sweet & attentive. The tortilla soup was one of the best I have had! I had the chicken sour cream enchiladas & they were delicious. What a hidden gem of a restaurant.

Darian W.

Yelp
Service by Caitlyn was quick and amazing. Food was hot, delicious, flavorful. Ambiance and vibe was chill for a Saturday morning breakfast. We got the Spanish omelet, charro beans were yummy, and build your own taco. We will be returning!

Yelp
Still a fan! Working at a client's so had breakfast delivered and Rogelio's is open before many other places. I was handing over a cash tip to a wonderful delivery driver when other establishments would have only been open for five minutes. First of all, I am delighted how enormous my horchata is!! And it tastes great, plenty of ice in there. The drinks arrived chilly and the food was hot, life is good. The machacado is texturally lovely, the beef's not petrified nor too chewy and the peppers/onions tasted so zingy fresh and brought wonderful color. Modest supporting cast of beans and potatoes were comforting and the right size--some places you wonder if it spilled out on the way or they only put enough to cover the bottom of the tray section like a comestible trompe l'oeil. My guisada taco was satisfying; been a long while since I've had any so I savored it straight up. Didn't even add salsa. Good bite size chunks and flavor, no gristle. The poblano Escobar was the second big happy surprise for me, roasted peppers had such a nice taste and texture. Mild enough I could feed it to my Midwestern ma and generously stuffed. I'll have to have Mr R try this during Lent. Surprise number three, their salsas. I tried them out on my leftover machacado plate, which became two fat tacos. Now I don't mind when I'm at a taco truck and the salsa shot you get is Herdez from a bottle, but THESE beauties are so fresh. Both red and green brought more heat than expected*, I loved it. Driver mentioned they'd redone the interior since she'd last visited it herself and was planning to go back and eat there in the near future now. I asked if they still did their fresh squeezed oj (I haven't stepped in there for a while, either!), but she hadn't noticed. I do know their cooking's still banging, what a great start to my day. *Over a week later their verde cut with mayo for hard boiled egg snacks still makes my nose run. Can we buy this in a jar? Bc spouse would LOVE IT.

Yelp
We've been talking about checking out the breakfast tacos for awhile and this morning it finally happened. I ordered 4 carne guisada and 2 bean and cheese tacos to go. The ladies behind the counter were very friendly which is always a plus. We got home and I unwrapped my first carne guisada taco. The tortillas were good. There was about 3 small pieces of meat in my taco. One was so fatty that it was inedible. The meat was not tender, as it should be, but the spice was nice. The bean and cheese tacos were ok, not much on the taco. Overall, I'm pretty disappointed and for what we paid we probably won't go back. I'm so sad about this because we love to support local business.

Ruben G.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I had sour cream chicken enchiladas. They were the best I've had in a while, rice and beans reminds of my mom's when I was a kid. I definitely will be coming out soon. Sarai was very help

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in San Marcos!!! The only drawback is they are closed on Wednesdays!

Betsy G.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere is great. It's in a little corner with great service and very kind staff. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup. I remember it being amazing a few years back. I know things changed. However there was barely any chicken and they put guacamole instead of avocado, it's just a taste preference I suppose Will be back to try other things just a little disappointed on the soup.

Erin C.

Yelp
We flew in from out of state and couldn't wait for authentic Mexican food. This place did not disappoint. Our waitress suggested the carne guisada breakfast taco. I went for it, and so glad I did! The refried beans, tortillas and salsa were also delicious. Staff was all very attentive and our table was attended to by all wait staff. If you want "hole in the wall," delicious and inexpensive Mexican food, tos is your place. Wished I would have taken pictures.

Yelp
Great service from Ernesto! Cool environment with the mural & the wall art! Try the green sauce, it's spicy & delicious!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We are starting to venture a bit south in search of our Mex/Tex Mex cravings. This was a decent find to say the least. Service was really friendly, place was older but clean. The bottled sauces were good, green being my favorite. The queso was better with some of the red salsa added. We start with our norms...Wife Beef Chiladas with double rice....which was very good...rice was fresh and light as well. I went with the Chicken with the green sauce, which was excellent...Beans were good to. Our only downside wason both dishes the food was just "warm" other then that pretty sold joint.

Tara H.

Yelp
Great service from Eli, hot delicious food, and very reasonable prices. Highly recommend

Mandi R.

Yelp
Ernesto and Kira were amazing! The restaurant was packed but we had amazing food and service. The food was hot, it was extremely flavorful, and the hot sauce was on point!
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
The food was absolutely finger licking. I ordered the birria quesadilla and almost ate the plate. Will definitely be returning to this restaurant when I visit San Marcos. Huge shout to Ernesto, he delivered excellent hospitality.

Nelly C.

Yelp
Another amazing dinner in the books! Best birria in town and can't forget the dragon fruit margs. Ernesto is the best EVER! Did his big one

Katie R.

Yelp
If you're not at Rogelio's, where the f**k you at!!! The quesa birrias are the best I've had!!! Ernesto was the best server we ever had !

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place... 5pm visit: 1. Had to wipe down my table and there was only one other table so they were not busy. 2. I requested the Happy Hour street tacos ($3.00) but instead got a taco plate ($12.00). 3. Portion size was small. Other places in town offer more for less 4. Ordered desert ($6.00) and it was topped with cream. The menu is not descriptive. I am allergic to dairy. 5. Had to ask for napkins and a fork. 6. A water refill was not offered. Needless to say, it's an unlikely chance that I will not be back, unfortunate.

Yelp
Alejandra was very helpful and the birria tacos were delicious. Never been here before very good.

Vick T.

Yelp
Great service! Food came out as quick as possible. The people working during lunch time were nice and friendly.

Beto R.

Yelp
I tried the cinco leches for the first time, it was good. The ambience is good, I asked for over hard eggs. They were between over easy and over medium.

Jonathon T.

Yelp
Great service and portions. My fiancée loves their quesabirria. For dessert, the churros were filling and fluffy. Will continue to come back!

Louis D.

Yelp
the bernardes plate goes hard!! And the salsas if delicious, great place for lunch. I recommend this place

Gilbert D.

Yelp
The barria street tacos were good. The waitress was very nice and consistent service was good too.

Yelp
Great margarita, I ordered 2 but they're pretty strong, probably 2 shots of tequila each and by the second I thought it best to take home cause it's honestly probably the strongest I've had. And the guacamole was really fresh and flavorful. Not the guacamole you'd find at a Karen party like store bought. I don't know how it would get any better honestly, give them a try. I also had the fajitas steak salad and it comes with ranch on the side but honestly the steak was so flavorful I didn't need any dressing. The only thing is the service was a little off, like I had to stand up from the table to order the second margarita and she wasn't very aware of me trying to get her attention and honestly I really didn't mind and she's super sweet. I would just be attentive to the room but I definitely recommend try it out, you'll be happy you did!!

Jazmin G.

Yelp
prickly pear margs & birria is always on point! ernesto is definitely the best server there!

Andrew K.

Yelp
always good and fresh friendly employees and efficient staff too I enjoy their entire menu

Yelp
Amazing family owned restaurant. Everytime I've visited this place , which has been about 15 times over the last 10 years, it's been incredible . It's located next to my dads business and it's always been my go to breakfast place. The food is cheap, delicious , and comes out fast! I personally don't like the chips (they are pre-bought) but the salsa makes up for it

Sheldon B.

Yelp
I have no food pix to post cuz we wolfed everything down within 8 minutes .... that's no exaggeration .... charro beans & rice were well-cooked & full of flavors, street tacos al carbon where should I start, tenderest meat & robust, beef enchiladas were MUAH !!! and the margaritas, DAMN no cutting corners at all! The owner & staff were gracious enough to stay late for us, much appreciated.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
The food was great and we liked our waitress. Highly recommend the queso! If you like spicy you'll love the salsa. We tried a mix of breakfast and lunch dishes. The kids even got a Mickey Mouse pancake! We definitely will be returning.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
It would have been good except I ordered door dash and chose no cheese or sour cream as I'm allergic to dairy (they had the options on their door dash menu which means they can abide by this request). The chicken flautas were loaded with cheese. Waste of money and now I can't even eat my dinner. Do not recommend if you have food allergies as they do not pay attention to medical issues.

Diana H.

Yelp
The queso birria tacos are amazing! They also have them on happy hour 3-7 for only $3!
google avatar

Isabella H.

Yelp
Ordered To-Go on my way back home and I was not disappointed! I ordered in the restaurant and was out of there in five minutes! I got two (maybe three, okay?) tacos: Bean and Cheese (a classic to review) and Papa Ranchera (my personal favorite.) The bean and cheese was good, nothing special. I wasn't wowed by this one. Tortillas were NOT very good and for me, that's a hit and miss. Papa Ranchera- AMAZING. I love blended Papa Ranchera tacos- where there's so much sauce the papas stay together. Very soft papas as well. Delicious salsa. Taco salsa was very fresh. Size of tacos: very good. I'd recommend, it's just a little overpriced.
google avatar

Katy R.

Yelp
Loved this place. Waitress was friendly and took great care of us. The food was so good! They have daily specials that are $6 for breakfast or $8.50 for lunch and dinner. I had the sour cream enchiladas which come with a verde sauce that was so good. Excellent all around.
google avatar

Gustavo C.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Great prices! Rogelio's has everything you are looking for when searching for a restaurant. Prices are great and portions are good. If you are looking for good traditional Mexican food, Rogelio's is your place to go. I opted for the Eggs and Carne Guisada plate. The portion was good and flavor was on point. My meal would have been way better if the tortillas were homemade. We will continue to visit Rogelio's and recommend others to visit as well.
google avatar

Dayna G.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast! Honestly that's the only meal we've ever eaten at this venue. We've probably been here 9 times and have never been disappointed. Great service each time we've gone. It's always clean. Everyone is truly nice & helpful and look happy to be there. . . which is always a plus! Coffee is delicious! The chef or cooks are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Hats off to all the staff!

Paul C.

Yelp
I had the Street Taco Plate here and this place has hands down one of the best Al Pastor tacos I've ever had and I've had a ton. The Quesabirria tacos were amazing as well. Can't wait to try some other dishes here when I'm in San Marcos.

James T.

Yelp
The food and service was great! Loved the energy of the restaurant and its vibe. I had the chicken enchiladas, which was tasty with mild spice.
google avatar

Ramona B.

Yelp
Really loved the food I had chilaquiles and they were delicious. Server was super nice and the salsa was good too. I will definitely be back. I wish I had a pic but I was too busy eating to remember.

Kimberly C.

Yelp
The food is delicious, our waitress was attentive, professional, and timely with our order. The food was delicious and hot. The music selection was great. Love the artwork. Beautiful neighborhood restaurant (a hidden treasure) worth going the extra mile for to pop in for some good food.
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
Not worth the stop, food is over priced and the quality is not there. 1. Guacamole $10: They put it in a cup but fill it with shredded lettuce and top it with the guac. 2. Chicken quesadilla $14: just no, the " fajita chicken"was old and dry no seasoning, the flour tortilla was chewy like it had been microwave, lacked cheese 3. Mole chicken $12: This lacked flavor, tasted like can mole, chicken it self was tough and had a lot of cartilage, really small portion 4. Horchata $3: good Server was really sweet and friendly
