"Maryland-based Roggenart European Bakery, Bistro and Café crosses state lines for the first time this winter with a new Northern Virginia location. The Ballston storefront specializes in coffees, buttery breakfast sandwiches, omelets, oven-baked melts, and cast-iron sandwiches. Delights made daily include gooey gruyere croissants built with bacon and fluffy Danishes stuffed with sweet cheese. Roggenart, which means 'the art of rye' in German, operates four locales across Baltimore and Howard Counties and comes from Serbian-born owner Nemanja Popov. Seven years later, Roggenart is ready to expand closer to D.C. with an Arlington edition (open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily) and is currently in hiring mode." - Tierney Plumb

Cute cafe with a ton of seating and super friendly staff. I dropped by Roggenart after seeing it on a list of "recommended cafes in Northern Virginia" and loved the large space, abundant natural light, and wall of books that customers are free to borrow and thumb through as they sit. It's generally pretty quiet, so it's a great place to work or read. The coffee is solid, although a bit too acidic for my taste, and they have a bunch of fun pastries. At the barista's recommendation, I decided to try the lemon danish; the crust was nice and flaky, but I found the inner filling way too sweet. The lemon curd was slightly tangy, but most of the natural sourness had been overtaken by the sugar.

Roggenart is a hidden gem! The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked pastries. The variety of European-style breads, croissants, and desserts is impressive, and each one I’ve tried has been delicious. The coffee is rich and flavorful, pairing perfectly with their baked goods. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to relax or catch up with friends. The staff is friendly and efficient, ensuring a great experience every time. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy .

My boyfriend and I had been going to roggenarg regularly over the summer and then slowed down when it got colder. Tiday was our first day back after a few months and we found it to be a very different experience. The sandwich I usually get was much smaller than it had been in the past, and despite there being no line there was a long wait time to order while employees stood in the back chatting and on their phones. My coffee order was also incorrect. We got a cookie to share and it was so sickly sweet that it was inedible. It was a red velvet cookie, but smelled and tasted artificial and like fruity pebbles. Staff were also not bussing or cleaning tables that had been long left by customers. One table was dirty the entire 45 minute duration of our visit, tables were left unbiased for so long we watched customers enter and leave without ordering because there was no place to sit. When we ordered and said our order would be for here, the person taking our order seemed surprised and said "you could find a table?". I've enjoyed eating here in the past and hope their standards go back up for service.

Google
A fabulous European bakery that offers a variety of croissants, danishes, sandwiches, lattes, and more. The Boston cream croissant is amazing.

Google
The pain au chocolate is actually quite authentic. It reminded me a lot of pain au chocolate I’ve had in Paris. The chocolate is good bitter chocolate. Real chocolate. Not overly sweet chocolate sauce that you might find in a poor rendition of this simple yet exquisite pastry. The pastry is perfectly flaky and yet soft and compressible. It has the perfect balance of crunchy and chewy. I found this gem at a farmer market next to GW hospital Wednesdays 3-8. I will certainly be visiting the shop in Arlington. The bread pudding is out of this world. It’s made with croissant instead of bread, which adds that je ne sais quoi to the flavor profile that sets this bread pudding apart. I have to say this bread pudding might top any bread pudding I’ve had in New Orleans. I ate it warm with vanilla ice cream on the side. It was heavenly. Could not recommend enough. I’m very impressed.

Google
After seeing their social media post, we visited this bakery this morning for breakfast. The ambiance was lovely, with cozy decor, wooden tables and bookshelves, an electronic fireplace, good music, and lanterns that created a warm atmosphere. We tried the breakfast croissant with bacon and egg, which was good and met our expectations. However, the Meat Lover's Omelette was too salty for our taste. The Boston Cream and Cheese Danish were decent but could have been better. The food and service were decent, but the coffee quality could be improved. We found the place decent overall, with some room for improvement in all aspects.

Google
Nice coffee shop vibe. The breakfast sandwich is served on a large croissant and the sausage was large enough to fill the sandwich to both ends. The scrambled egg was soft and creamy. Eat in orders are delivered at your table via a number tent system. Large outdoor patio that is dog friendly. By the order area, there is an wire rack with over stocked baked goods for 50% off

Google
Cozy coffee shop with a nice interior space and nice outdoor seating. The pastries, sandwiches, and breakfast sandwiches are great. The breakfast croissant came with a lot of nice fluffy egg. The latte was fine but not the best in the area.

Yelp
Great pastries & coffee ! The beet salad is very tasty too. Friendly service & nice atmosphere.

Samina M.

Yelp
Came here to catch up with friends on a Saturday afternoon! A beautiful little coffee shop with tasty pastries and flavorful coffee. I got the Tiramisu latte - the perfect blend of espresso, cream, and chocolate dusting on top. The ultimate treat! The fruit tart was fresh and paired well with the coffee. The service was very accommodating and was quite fast on such a busy day. The ambiance is spacious with plenty of seating, a nice fireplace, and a cozy atmosphere. A great spot if you find yourself in Ballston!

Yelp
Roggenart has the perfect WFH atmosphere with comfy seating and spacious tables for laptops and coffee/pastries! Loved their unique coffee flavors and opted for the Churro and Tiramisu lattes with almond milk. Both coffees were hot and sweet without being TOO sweet! Very obsessed with their homemade pastries, and there's SO MANY! The breakfast croissant was so big, had a buttered flaky outside stuffed with eggs, tomato, bacon, cheese, and avocado! The Frosted Schnecke was the perfect combo of a sticky bun and cinnamon roll with dulce de leche! The Apple Danish was also stuffed with yummy apple filling. Finally, the viral Crookie was DELICIOUS!! Roggenart's signature croissant is solid, and adding cookie dough on top added a delicious sweetness! Definitely recommend coming here for a chill breakfast spot to enjoy delicious treats! Workers brought our food over quickly and were pleasant!

Yelp
This location NEVER has the vegan eggs to make their Vegan Egg breakfast sandwich. All the other locations seem to keep this in stock, but never this one. If you cannot meet customer requests for this menu option take it off, or have an asterisk that indicates this location does not offer it. This is about my 4th or 5th time trying to order this sandwich in a 2-3 month window.

Isabella C.

Yelp
I have tried the churro latte & tiramisu latte! Both were very good and I love the amount of flavors they offer! The pastries are all super flakey and fresh! The crookie melted in my mouth and had the perfect cookie:croissant ratio! The Roggenart bfast sandwich was also amazing! The avocado and tomato were perfect to balance the eggs, cheese and bacon, truly a sandwich that had it all! The apple danish was so flakey and they didn't skimp on the apple at all. The schnecke was so delicious as well, I loved this take on a cinnamon roll. The staff was friendly and service was fast! This is the perfect cafe for remote working or just for a casual coffee date with friends! The space is warm and inviting and has a cozy vibe with the fireplace and books inside.

Colleen K.

Yelp
Cozy cafe and a great spot to get some work done! I enjoy coming here for a change of scenery when I'm working from home. The service is always friendly and there's plenty of seating. The vegan croissants are HUGE and so delicious! I've only had black iced coffee to drink, so can't speak to much of the drink menu, but their iced coffee hits the spot for me.

LeAnn F.

Yelp
We came here to get their iconic crookie but it was sold out. I got the strawberry custard croissant was flaky and needs to be more moist. The lemon tart was so lemony that we needed a lot of water with it. They have seating inside which is more dark and cozy vibes. They also have outdoor seating. If you're looking for a particular pastries, I recommend going there in the morning.

Jed R.

Yelp
Second time coming here. The first time, I got a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant to go. The second time, I got the avocado BLT and a green tea. Amazing food. My gf says "I get the pastries and they're really good". Anyway, back to your boy. The food is great, the service is great, and it's a fun little spot. There a cozy inside section and some outdoor tables when the weather is nice. There's a tap for the water too, so drink up. Happy 4th.

Annie S.

Yelp
Super cute breakfast spot with coffee, croissants/danishes and breakfast sandwiches. Croissants are reasonably priced for the area, $4.50/each. They also have a section of older pastries that are 50% off. Indoor and outdoor seating for small and large groups. Outdoor seating is shaded all day. Staff is incredibly friendly and if you sit outside they bring you your drink.

Zoya F.

Yelp
Pastries and sandwiches are out-of-this-world delicious. Flaky, chewy, just the right amount of sweet--you name the quality you want and it's here. I highly recommend the smoked salmon sandwich for its rich flavors. Counter staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The plates for serving food look like pieces of slate, which is a stylish way of serving things. Makes the items really Instagram-worthy. The interior space is a pleasant place to eat and visit with friends. The exterior tables look nice, but August is no time to lounge outside. Roggenart, I'll be back soon!

Ria D.

Yelp
I came here with some friends on a Sunday morning. We didn't order coffee because we heard it was too milky. I got the chicken avocado melt, which was advertised on the menu. I was a little disappointed. It looked and tasted like something could've made at home, and didn't look like what it was shown as on the menu. We then ordered the chocolate croissant with strawberries to share, and it was great' it was filled with custard. I would come back for the pastries, but not for any food or coffee. The ambiance was great- all the staff was extremely nice and friendly, and there was plenty of seating including outdoor seating.

Jenna P.

Yelp
I came here on the weekend to do some work and had a wonderful experience. The interior of the cafe was super cute with varied seating options. The workers prepared my drink super quickly and were extremely polite. I plan on coming back soon.

Ailun H.

Yelp
Another bakery/cafe in the Ballston area that is super walkable from where I live! Previously, this space was empty for almost three years (previously, it was a Coffee Republic, I think) so I'm glad to see that Roggenart moved in. Upon entering, I noticed lots of seating area and space, which is perfect for doing work at a cafe (and you don't need to worry about there not being enough tables). There's a variety of baked goods and pastries (like at least 5 different types of croissants, some sweet and some savory options) that made it hard to choose. I decided to try the infamous crookie (a huge trend right now which is a chocolate chip cookie baked on top of a croissant) as well as a classic Pain au Chocolat (chocolate croissant). The crookie had a really crispy cookie layer and an equally crispy croissant (not your typical flaky and buttery texture). I thought it was really sweet and not for me -- sadly, the hype did not meet my expectations. The chocolate croissant was soft and buttery and went perfectly with coffee. I'll be back to try other classics!

Jenna L.

Yelp
After seeing on social media that this new European cafe had opened up in Ballston, I finally had time to try out this place this afternoon. It's very cozy inside with warm ambiance, and love the wood paneling pattern throughout the cafe. The iced latte was too milky for my preference, I could hardly taste the espresso. The tiramisu syrup flavor was also very subtle and each sip wasn't consistent in flavor even though I mixed the drink well. But overall, not too bad and I'd try another drink on their menu next time. Also looking forward to trying their croissant sandwiches next time, they looked amazing!

Niranjana S.

Yelp
The perfect spot for a rainy morning! The ambiance was warm, cozy, and inviting with a good amount of seating for a cafe. The owner and employees were so nice, very helpful, and patient while I tried to choose something from the appetizing assortment of. I ended up going with a latte and one of the viral cookie croissants. The latte was nice but nothing entirely out the ordinary. The cookie croissant was so SOOO good! I will say it is pretty sweet and even though I have a huge sweet tooth, I could only eat a few bites at a time. Overall it was a great experience and I'm excited to go again!

Zack G.

Yelp
New Arlington location of a local DMV coffee chain This location is tucked away in a hidden plaza, and it has a warm and inviting atmosphere with plenty of seating Tons of different food, pastry, and drink options I came here for breakfast with my GF, and we each got vanilla iced lattes and breakfast sandwiches on croissants. Everything was very solid, but I would have liked for them to heat up the croissant that my sandwich was on

MP G.

Yelp
So happy to have this cute cafe and bakery so close to me in Ballston. The first day they opened there was a line outside the door! Service is counter service and you take a number with you once you order. I got the turkey bacon avocado and it was made very quickly. It tasted great - better than Panera's. I hope to come back to try their pastries and coffee and spend time there working sometime since it looked cozy and inviting.

Khanh-Chau M.

Yelp
Came here to work and it was such a pleasant vibe and the workers are so kind! I loved my strawberry custard croissant, it was tasty and nice to look at lol. My chicken pesto mozzarella sandwich was good too, although wouldn't say it's worth $12-13. My tiramisu latte was tasty although I forgot it was tiramisu latte after some time. Plenty of seating and outlets and the way the utensils and free water are set up are nice. I'd definitely come back again to chat or just relax with some good food items!

Andy Y.

Yelp
An absolute delight! This place offers a cozy, charming atmosphere perfect for eating with family and friends or even to just relax and read a book! There were plenty of seating for a Saturday lunch time, both indoor and outdoor options. The service was very friendly and assisted with recommendations from their menu. We opted for the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sandwich and their One of a Kind Grilled Roast Beef Sandwich. Both were prepared fresh and delicious! The prices were just for the sandwich and no sides. Parking is limited to garage or street parking. Overall, a pleasant experience! Enjoy.

Mira S.

Yelp
The drinks are okay but they are very sweet and vary each time I come on. I do like the ambiance but there is one staff member who walks around the cafe bothering and sometimes speaks rudely to people. I don't know what to say to him sometimes and he makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Other than that, the pastries are great.

Maryanne G.

Yelp
Food was great! We enjoyed the menu selection and staff -- true loves included the chicken I added on the Caesar salad-- clearly well-marinated, and very tender as a result. Overall, nice balance of ingredients. Salmon omelette had a very generous amount of salmon! Even iced tea was great -- I loathe "sweet" tea, so it was nice to have a simple, refreshing cup of the good stuff. Floor could have used a sweep -- immediate impressions mean a lot -- and there was a little too much flotsam and jetsam on the floor for my taste, especially as an eat-in customer. But overall the food was so good and staff so nice that I will be back.

Chanel G.

Yelp
This new #cafe @roggenart is tucked away in Ballston got increasingly busy while I was there during my visit. Their pastries looked delectable. I on the other hand needed substance that morning. Now look, I know what you're thinking - the omelette didn't have any razzle dazzle but do you expect all the best dishes to be visually appealing in order for you to consume it? ...was the omelette underwhelming? No. It was a simple omelette and that was good enough for me!

Bill D.

Yelp
Made a quick stop at Roggernart this morning on the way to the office because it looked interesting. I'm glad I tried it out. This feels like an authentic European bakery. It's comfy inside, with warm lighting and plenty of seating. The selection of baked goods is pretty impressive and tasty. I'm not a coffee drinker, but it looks like they have every kind of coffee implement to make your favorite brew. I had a breakfast sandwich which was really appetizing and fresh. Definitely hit the spot. The staff was quickly working to fill orders and were quite helpful. I'm already planning a return visit.

Mike L.

Yelp
The cafe is a nice space to have a coffee and spend some time catching up with friends or do some reading. Service is good as well. Try out the crookie (croissant x cookie) and maybe some of the other pastries, but skip anything that's more like a meal. The menu has a soup of the day for $7 or french onion for $10.... too bad the soup of the day today WAS french onion and charged the higher price. Also very disappointing itself because it was obviously frozen from before. There was actually cold soup underneath the upper layer of crouton and cheese, so i'm guessing they portioned a frozen bit of soup, put it under the broiler and expected that to heat enough. Perhaps more unforgivable is the onions aren't even caramelized. They were chewy and not very sweet, so while it looks nice, the soup was bad. For $10 as the specialty soup, I expect much better. Sandwich had hard (not crispy) bacon and noticeably cold turkey. They should leave the sandwich open while toasting to heat up the turkey a bit before putting on the tomato and assembling. This was right around noon so no excuse for lunch ingredients to still be nearly frozen. I'll be back for coffee and desserts but will pass on other food options.

Patricia Z.

Yelp
First time there very cute place you can sit with your laptop and work. Service was good. Everything was freshly made and delivered to the table... highly recommend one of the breakfast sandwiches.

Karla P.

Yelp
I really enjoy the place quite a lot! I especially like their churro iced latte! Highly recommend. The ambiance isn't anything crazy... it's a pretty regular cafe. The service is nice but there is one guy who is super energetic! I hope he's still there he was quite funny the last time I went. But plenty of people go in here to do work or just socialize, so make sure to stop by.

Hailey P.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have this new gem in Ballston!! I've been twice in a week and everything has been incredible. We've had the frangipane croissant, peach almond tart, raspberry danish, Boston cream pie danish, and cheese danish. Their selection is amazing and everything is so fresh, even at 2pm! Having tea and a pastry is such a treat and I can't wait to try some of their savory options too. This place is excellent!

Jasmine A.

Yelp
Food / Drinks: 5/5 I enjoyed the pepperoni and mozzarella croissant I ordered and my boyfriend liked the strawberry chocolate croissant he got. I got an iced oatmilk caramel latte which was yummy and my boyfriend got the iced s'mores mocha latte which he thought was good too. Service: 5/5 The lady was very helpful and patient with us, when taking our order. The barista making the coffee had great energy which is always a nice touch at establishments. Ambiance: 5/5 Very cozy, outside seating is also an option which we chose. Altogether would rate this place a 5/5, food and drinks were so good I couldn't even get a photo but I definitely will next time!

Amandine M.

Yelp
cannot say enough good things about this place. I came here over the weekend, The line seemed a bit long when we got there but totally worth it great quality and delicious food. I got a bacon egg and cheese croissant, pain aux raisins and a latte everything was delicious! Big + : Absolutely loved the energy and customer service of the gentleman working there on Sunday morning very kind and welcoming. It's very nice to see people loving their job !!!

Geralyn B.

Yelp
Absolutely HAD to check this place out- yes, the crookie drew me in. But, it's not the only pastry there that's absolutely delicious. The apple strudel reminds me of the ones I've had in Europe.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday morning and highly recommend going early. We decided to order 2 pastries and 2 signature sandwiches. For the sandwiches we ordered the ham and Swiss sandwich as well as the turkey avocado. The sandwiches did not impress us. The baguette on the ham and cheese was a slight disappointment as well. However, we LOVED the bread pudding and cookie croissant. I would highly recommend asking them to heat up the cookie croissant though. The bread pudding was delectable and surprisingly very light. Would go back to try more pastries!

Katie S.

Yelp
This place is frickin adorable. The food was good & the staff were friendly - it's such a great place to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee, grab a quick lunch, or even hang out and play a board game with friends. I had the mushroom quiche which was delicious. My friend had the chicken avocado melt - also delicious. 10/10 recommend.

Sanchita G.

Yelp
I love the CROOOKIE I got from Roggenart! it was honestly one of my favorites! they make them every 2 hours or so here and I got it when it was fresh! the service was super duper good and fast. They were enthusasitic about working htere and the products. the ambiance was super cute cafe in ballston! great place to hang out or do work! it was like a french aesthetic to it!

Will M.

Yelp
I was third in line on a slow day yet waited 20 minutes for a latte. The coffee was good but the barista was simply too slow.

Christine B.

Yelp
Not sure when they opened but cute little bakery. We don't really need more coffee spots in Ballston but they have sandwiches and lots of baked goods that I think makes them stand out from some of the others. It's across from Grand Cru and next to Big Buns. We just happened to walk by so hopefully Arlington now or something drops a note about them so people know it's there. Definitely worth stopping in. Tasty croissants and good coffee. Sandwiches seem a little overpriced but still looking forward to trying more.

Shannon S.

Yelp
Food is so fresh and delicious. Location is beautiful, bookstore feel. All employees were kind and helpful as this was my first visit. Definitely recommend trying this location.

Anne W.

Yelp
My second visit to Roggenart was earlier on a weekend morning, so avoided the long line to order and was able to grab a seat inside since it was chilly. Food was just as good, but unfortunately service is still lacking - after waiting at our table for about 15 minutes for the rest of our order to be delivered we had to go up to the counter to ask where our quiche was, and it was obvious it had been forgotten - they grabbed it and began heating it right then. The place was not so busy that it shouldn't have been obvious that we had been sitting for a long time right next to the counter with an order # at our table indicating we were waiting for something. I am really crossing my fingers these kinks get ironed soon!

Kt N.

Yelp
I can't believe I just found this place!! Great ambience and the 50% goodies are THE BOMB. John is such a kind employee and gave us great recs. The iced vanilla latte is wonderful I'm definitely coming back here!!

Morgaine M.

Yelp
Person taking my order seemed really upset. I waited a long time for the chicken salad, which was very dry. When I got back to work, there was a hair in it (I have long blonde hair. This was about 2.5 in and black straight. Won't be eating here again and wouldn't recommend it.

Jelli F.

Yelp
They bake on site, and if you're early enough you get half off yesterday's pastries. The owner used to be in most days and she seems to have delegated. The quality has diminished very slightly but it's still quite good. Hope she comes back :)

Liz R.

Yelp
Excited to have this new bakery open now in Ballston. I stopped in around 3pm last week and loved seeing all the pastries still available. I got the Reese's croissant to go, which was very delicious. Looking forward to trying more treats in the future.

Sarah W.

Yelp
The pastries themselves left something to be desired - the apple turnover was mostly a stale dense pastry, little filling and nothing flaky. The staff was nice, though, and there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

MS B.

Yelp
This place has a nice vibe indoors and outdoor seating in the courtyard. I have had multiple baked goods and they have all been pretty good. Definitely better than some others in the area. The breakfast is also good. The croissant sandwiches are a little messy but they are tasty and give you a lot for your money. I have had a couple of lunch items and they were more than decent. I can't speak to the coffee or specialty drinks but the ambiance, service, and food are mostly above par. A good place to meet friends or do a little work. A great addition to the neighborhood.

Beach G.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Indoors or courtyard. Exactly like a European cafe. Pastries, breakfast and lunch. What a find in the neighborhood. Next door to Grand Cru in the courtyard. Best pastries around. Good coffee and juice.

Christina P.

Yelp
When ppl say service is slow, they are not kidding. It's very slow. Cafe is quiet to work in. Baked goods aren't bad

Lola H.

Yelp
I don't recommend their Reuben (tough to chew meat pieces) nor chicken salad (watery) sandwiches but pastries like croissant & latte were good. Love that they have plenty of seating for working.

Isaac E.

Yelp
Love the ambiance. Love the music. LOVE the lemon danish. This was exactly the place I was looking for on the second morning of a conference.

Sky H.

Yelp
Amazing pastries! Coffee was pretty good but nothing amazing. One of the employees was a little weird and kept telling me to "smile" while waiting on my coffee which made me uncomfortable.

Susie J.

Yelp
I don't know what is the issue with the girl who was helping me get ham and Swiss croissant. She def was not having a good day. Attitude and just rude. When I asked her if I was asking her too much for her to heat up a cold ham and Swiss croissant( bc she didn't even asked) she blame the damn oven that she have to close it super hard. ( like I'm stupid) anyways they should always put someone friendlier up front. I won't be going back lost my appetite
