Chamblee Creates a Downtown Entertainment District with an Open Container Policy for To-Go Cocktails | Eater Atlanta

"Included in Chamblee’s downtown entertainment district that took effect July 1, this establishment may participate in the city’s open-container area between Ingersoll Rand Drive and McGaw Drive, allowing patrons to consume off-premise alcoholic beverages within the designated boundaries under strict rules: drinks must be served in clear plastic cups bearing the establishment’s logo and an authorized city sticker, and open containers must be disposed of by 10:00 p.m. Possession of open beverages outside the district, after 10:00 p.m., or in unauthorized containers can result in citations or fines. The district is intended to promote local businesses, walkability, and community gathering; state rules on to-go cocktails (SB 236) still apply where municipalities permit them, including limits on quantity, container type, alcohol content, and purchaser identification." - Beth McKibben

Google
Pros: the place is very nice and clean. The decorations, the ambiance, the set up, tables and chairs are very nice and clean. Cons: well it is clearly cater to Americans for the food is not necessarily authentic. It has your typical rice, beans, lettuce with sour cream pico de gallo and choice of meat and tada is a Mexican dish. If you want to go to a clean, nice looking restaurant to impress your non Mexican friends who eat mild salsas, this is the place for sure. The stuff is nice, place is clean and food is decent. Music they played is awesome, from Spanish rock to tropical genres. If you want something more authentic definitely try a different spot. There are many different places in the area with a sense of street style, more authentic Mexican dishes that most America or dare to try.

Google
The big standout is the staff—our waitress was so hardworking and sweet! She was so quick with the drinks and a high chair and we really appreciated it. The food is good—the birria tacos and plantains are great. Don’t get the house margarita, but the skinny margarita is good.

Google
The Baja fish tacos. And the shrimp tacos are so delicious. We eat here at least once a week! It’s in a cute neighborhood with an adorable patio. 10/10 recommend.

Google
I finally went to a Mexican restaurant you Must go it is worth your time money and gas that is awesome they always greet you with a and the drinks we had were on point. This is a hidden gem in Chamblee Georgia and everyone at my table Loved the atmosphere the food the people and the staff

Google
Very Nice and Clean. Easy Acess. The decor atmosphere was excellent. Food was very good, but asked for extra cheese and there was very little to no cheese in meat. The strawberry daiquiri was very tasty but needed a bit more real strawberry. I had combo plate of burrito and enchilada both ground beef. Not much spice flavor. The presentation was excellent. If I go again I believe I would not order from the combo menu for better flavoring. The chicken chimichanga had very little meat.

Christie W.

Google
The atmosphere was super cute but I wasn't pleased with the taste of the guacamole or my shrimp chimichanga. I may have to go back because the family I was with eats their frequently.

Melissa S.

Google
A bit quiet here for a Saturday night but also nice not to have a wait. We came in for a quick drink and appetizer before going out. We weren't disappointed by the quality of the drinks and food. The margarita was tasty and so was the guacamole.

Rebecca S.

Google
I had the Rojo Dip appetizer for lunch, it was top notch! So good! And I love the decor inside, especially this lamp lol.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE. We come here every so often for lunch, but the staff is so friendly. The food is delicious, same with the bar drinks, and they have sooo many different options. The ambiance is fun, colorful, and inviting, as painting/trinkets fill the wall. Those are always my favorite kinds of restaurants, as it gives you something else to do/look at besides just being on your phone. SWEETEST PEOPLE, GREAT FOOD

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday night which we realized they closed at 10. From the time we sat down till the time we left, we felt like we were being rushed. I understand coming from someone who has worked in the service industry when it's time to go people want to leave however this was not a great first Impression. I can see if we came in 20 minutes before closing, but we literally had an hour and a half. As we were looking at the menu talking about what we possibly wanted , drinks all of the above our server continued to ask if we were ready yet if I had to guess she probably asked about five times and there is definitely a big difference between being attentive and rushing your customers. Even after we were notified, the kitchen would be closed. We offered to go ahead and pay and not only did our server. Ask us if we are ready, but the manager came by too. It was frustrating because we were just sitting there talking, we had already finished our food and drinks And paid. She was friendly, but we could definitely tell she was ready to go. Now getting into the food it was very underwhelming. The chips and salsa were probably the best thing we had the steak, taco and salmon both like flavor. The mangoes on the salmon taco was a great touch, but the fact the salmon taste like it was literally just cooked, took away from it. This is definitely not anywhere near authentic unfortunately or is it a tasty spin on Tex-Mex. If I had to make a suggestion, it would probably be. This is a good place to get drinks. I've heard their birria tacos are pretty good so I would give it a chance again just for that. Being that I live in the neighborhood, I'm hoping this was just an off night because I would love to patronize here more often. The restaurant itself is very cute and has a lot of potential. However, the food itself needs work. I'm giving it four stars solely because I can see this being great. Hopefully they take customers suggestions and use them!

Imani M.

Yelp
This is easily one of my favorite Taco places in the area. The food is fresh, and made to order. My boyfriend and I Love their chipotle sauce! The margaritas are fresh and strong. Definitely consider trying them out!

Yelp
One thing about Atlanta, there's going to be a Mexican nearby which really makes some folks connoisseurs. There's a lot to choose from on this menu - which is okay. And if Mexican is not your thing, they have ground beef tacos with hard shell. Most times I've been, it's been easy to get seated quickly. They make great drinks! And that's probably what drives me back because the food is mid. The staff is friendly and always accommodating.

Lexi D.

Yelp
First of all, this is my very favorite Mexican restaurant in Atlanta.. outside of Super Rica! The food is perfectly prepared every time. We LOVE the Birria tacos and the fajitas are genuinely delicious. Vicky the bartender makes the BEST margaritas and her service is top notch. Highly, highly recommend.

Troy D.

Yelp
A beautiful restaurant just a short walk from the Marta station and Walmart in Chamblee. I was there last Friday afternoon. The server was super helpful and friendly. The menu had great lunch choices. I had to have the tacos of course. Will be back soon.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
I've come here a few times and overall really enjoy it. The fare is fairly standard Mexican American, although I think a bit tastier than average chain, especially if you go for one of the house specials. The decor and overall atmosphere inside is also well done, with an upbeat, festive feel. Service is generally good and the prices are reasonable, especially for the house margaritas. There's also a large covered patio to take advantage of when the weather is nice,
google avatar

Stacy V.

Yelp
Excellent food and service every time especially the Rojo burrito. The cucumber margaritas are the best! festive and authentic

Carrie S.

Yelp
Excellent fusion of Hispanic cities and countries! We had a quiet table for the 10 of us to celebrate our mother's life surrounded by artistic walls she would have liked. Thank you 100% to the great service.

Yelp
Please forgive me for my lack luster pictures. I was in good heaven, and on my second margarita before I got it together to write a review. They have indoor and outdoor dining. Big plus. Ambiance and decor. Fun, vibrant. I likey the bathroom. Don't judge me...I've been to some places. The decor made me feel if sports bar and Mexico had a baby, this would be it. Staff. Fun and vibrant like the place. Not overbearing. And Food comes out quick. Food. Their table chips and salsa is so good. Light and salsa so garden fresh. Yum. I had the salmon and a fish taco. Oooh the fruit salsa on it and drizzle of sauce and fresh avocado was superb. Next time I'll have three. To wash it down I had a blue Margarita and passion fruit margarita. Try it with extra alcohol. Not a negative, but why not go all in. Love this spot can't wait to go back. There is so much more I want to try.

Yelp
Good local spot for Mexican food. Came here a couple weeks ago and had a good time. The food is good and they have a big menu and good prices. The margs are decent too!
google avatar

Lauren O.

Yelp
At first we thought this place had just standard Mexican American food but I'd say I'd probably rate it a 3.5 the longer I've been going. Their house specialties do taste better than their basic combo. The inside is decorated nicely bit their outside patio is large and pretty. There's always fun Spanish music playing too. They give you salsa and chips for free and the food comes out so fast every time. We've had everything from fajitas to veggie combo to enchiladas and it's all pretty good, nothing special but tasty and quick. Ok week nights it's pretty empty but on a Friday night we had to wait over an hour.
google avatar

LaShonda H.

Yelp
Came here for Cinco de Mayo and we waited for over an hour. But it's Cinco de Mayo so we knew what to expect. They had a limited menu which was fine, I ordered chicken tacos with corn tortillas and onions & cilantro. I also had 2 margaritas. They had delicious margaritas but the tacos were nothing to write home about. I would definitely come back on a regular night because the staff was super friendly and accommodating, despite the unmanageable lines for Cinco de Mayo. The parking is a bit interesting, since this place is connected to an apartment complex. But, I was able to get a spot pretty early. They have a nice sized patio with some comfy looking seating that I do want to try. I'm sure I'll be back soon.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
The service is about a 7.5 out of 10. But the CARNITAS are just DELICIOUS! The food is very very fresh. All of their porks. Yummy Steak carbon tasty I would definitely go back
google avatar

Emma H.

Yelp
Just average for me - everything was "not bad"... food, service, value. Good location but there are spots with better atmosphere close by.

Angela R.

Yelp
When Rojo opened, I was a regular customer. So much so that anyone visiting knew we would walk over to eat. I noticed the last few times I have ordered for pickup, very small amount of food. I ordered the Beef Taco Salad on Saturday. Look at the pictures, it's like they gave me a tablespoon of beef! The amount in the shell isn't even halfway!!! I had to walk back over to ask for the cheese dip I paid for. The young lady that helped me, took my food to the kitchen and came back saying, "they put in the salad" - she gave me a small container of cheese. There wasn't any cheese on the salad. This was my final visit to Rojo, take out or eat inside. Pretty sad since I live in the apartments connected.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was very mediocre. Service was below average. Not the ideal spot if you happen to be solo and needed to use some Wi-Fi while you eat and drink.

Yelp
My hubs Bob and I we're going to try the New Mexican place in peachtree blvd, but it's not open yet! So we turned the corner and ended up at Rojo. A fun atmosphere! Not a cookie cutter restaurant. It has a thoughtful decor with a red wall covered with a chain link fence for hanging adornments . Our server Lety brought out the chips and salsa (both perfect- light and crispy, flavorful and spicy respectively.). She took our drink order. We both got the Rojo Marg. I asked how it was different from the house marg. Basically the house is a mix. And the Rojo is made from scratch with more alcohol. It was delicious. I got mine frozen no ice and he got his on the rocks with ice (as usual). The part that was unique was that the rim salt was black! It made for a striking and memorable presentation. The drinks don't have prices in the menu, and I didn't ask. But they were in the regular range. Maybe around $7.50 ea? For starters we had the queso with jalapeños. Not actual jalapeños, tho. It was more of a swirl of jalapeño purée. Delicious. I had the chicken quesadilla al carbon. It was like a chicken fajita quesadilla minus the guac. Super delicious. Came with lettuce, pico, sour cream, and rice. Bob got the Carnitas. As far as vibes, it's kind of like if Verde and Los Bravos had a baby, it would be Rojo. An extensive menu with some of our all time favorites. But it also had a cool vibe and outdoor seating we'll definitely be back ... and ask for Lety! She's awesome.

Yelp
This was just our first visit, but everything we had was fantastic. Very attractive interior and covered patio, with great service. Mexican music was enjoyable and not too loud. There's an extensive margarita menu which ranges in price from $6-$12, with the house margarita on the low end of the price range. The Rojo margarita is the house margarita (frozen, from a machine, in my case) with extra tequila and triple sec. It was smooth and delicious and I could definitely feel the booze. Warm chips and fresh salsa arrived as we were looking at the menu. Both were great, with a nice level of spiciness to the salsa. Extra salsa was free. We got the tacos al carbon, with steak and shrimp. The waitress actually asked for our preferred doneness on the steak and it actually came out to that doneness. They were fresh and delicious, and came with chopped onions and cilantro on a choice of tortillas, with a side of salsa verde. The shrimp had no sign of being grilled (al carbon), but had a nice garlic taste to them. We added the $2 beans and were rewarded with an excellent example of refried beans that were not dry at all. We will definitely be back to try more.

Joey H.

Yelp
Food's pretty good, the portions are getting smaller as the price is going up. I used to like the place but that has diminished within the past couple months
google avatar

Shari W.

Yelp
This was a fluke. I was looking for a place to eat dinner with friends outside. On our way to a different place we saw this outdoor covered patio and made an impromptu decision to swing into the parking lot and give it a try. So glad we did! The patio is decorated so lovely, we were seated quickly, and the staff was friendly. The menu was great, it was hard to choose, but when we did the food came out quickly. (We didn't even have time to finish all the delicious warm crispy chips that were given to us while we waited.) I had vegetables fajitas which were fantastic and served with a plate of rice and beans and salad and guacamole. It was all more than I could eat, even though I wanted to devour every single scrap. One tablemates had the house special fajitas, and the other had the chili relleno and a fish taco. Everyone was more than satisfied and the vibe was so comfortable that we stayed for a long time after we finished eating, just chatting away, and the staff never bothered us. It was a great evening and I highly recommend. Dinner for three with two drinks and tax and tip was just over $80

Yelp
This place is a breath of fresh air to the Chamblee are. A well needed good margarita. The owners are greeting you, serving you and proud to be a part of the Chamblee community. Located below the beautiful apartment community, The Oliver. It is easy to find. For starters the have a bar that serves inside and outside. Pet friendly which is very important for the community. You can walk up order a drink and keep it moving. I have failed to take pics of all food ordered over the past week but I will add pics. Definitely my favorite spot in Chamblee for now.
google avatar

Ron F.

Yelp
Nice little addition to the Chamblee scene. Been looking for a cool Mexican place and we have found it. Even though we came during covid, the place has a cool vibe. Bar that opens up to the patio with a good drink selection. I had the Rojo fajitas, which were very good. Rojo fajitas are shrimp, steak, chicken and pork with onions, peppers and squash. The fiancé had the chicken burrito. The burrito was very big and very tasty.
google avatar

Cloudia L.

Yelp
Just NO. Simply NO. I mean service is good, but food is not even authentic or even texmex.
google avatar

Tara H.

Yelp
We are in town for a baseball tournament. A local recommended this place and we decided to try it. The service was great, atmosphere amazing and the food was delicious! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
So much potential. Sadly, I don't have high hopes for the long term survival of this place. The staff was nice enough, but I'm sorry, the food needs to be addressed. Buford Highway has some incredible Mexican food known for being authentic, fair priced and unique. Aside from the restaurant decor, nothing else here achieved this reputation. The Rojo salad, their signature salad, was quite embarrassing. The Grilled salmon wasn't in fact grilled. The mango was not fresh. It was tiny cubes clearly plucked from a fruit cup. That was all I needed on that. Perhaps it served me right for ordering a salad. What I received was a far cry from the pics on the web site. The beef nachos. Taught me that it is in fact possible to mess up nachos. The cheese was thin. The beef was oily. The nachos were greasy. The plate wasn't good. My daughter ordered the kids burger and fries. She ate one bite. I ate one bite. No more bites were had. The fries were not hot, crisp or tasty. The only contender for decency goes to the bowl of chicken tortilla soup. That was passable. The chicken was there. The avocado was green. The broth was warm. For soup, it was fine. If you're going in for drinks, atmosphere and a taco I'm sure this place will fit the bill. But don't make the mistake and assume the menu matches the higher end decor. Fine it is. Authentic it isn't.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Always enjoy eating hear after a long week at work. They staff is always so friendly. The food delicious. I'm thankful they opened in Chamblee. My regular favorites include the guacamole (made fresh right when you order), the nachos al carbon (steak), and chicken tortilla soup. Oh.. and always order a flan to complete my visit.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere! I highly recommend it. The drinks and desserts are fantastic too.
google avatar

Ayala B.

Yelp
I am really confused by these reviews. We came here for a quick lunch while my new tires were getting installed down the street. There was NO ONE else in the restaurant which isn't so shocking during these COVID times, but given that info, I would have expected decent service- not what we ended up experiencing unfortunately. The waitress was fine, but honestly I had to get her attention a couple of times which was surprising given the fact that there was no one else there. The food was BLAH! Think Taco Bell but 1/2 step better (only because I assume they use real meat). We love Mexican food (authentic and Tex mex alike), but this was disappointing to say the least. I rarely find myself in this area, but if/when we do come back, we won't be visiting this place again...FOR SURE.
google avatar

Hesham F.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place because I saw it under construction and thought for sure it's going to be good! This place looks great and has a decent vibe, but trust me when I tell you: PASS ON THIS Extremely mediocre food, margaritas are VERY weak, and honestly not attentive service to merit coming here. Baja GRILLED burritos are not even grilled. The taste was alright, but definitely nothing memorable. Took forever to get salsa, chips, and the refill of chips and salsa. The only things going for this place are the decor, location and the sweet lady that thanked us on the way out. Too bad she wasn't around for the rest of the meal!
google avatar

Landon R.

Yelp
This is my first review on Yelp and it's due to how wonderful Rojo is. By far the best Mexican in Chamblee/Brookhaven. Rojo has great chips and salsa that is included in your meal. They have a wonderful menu and I'd highly recommend it.
google avatar

Darren H.

Yelp
So, don't be confused about this place, it's Tex-Mex and not a Mexican restaurant. That's the mistake that I made. Expecting my Mexican favorites did not exist here, came here during Covid-19 so while they were open for dine-in they weren't totally busy. That's fine maybe more personal attention for me. Well, that wasn't the case, but whatever. Being that is wasn't busy I was expecting my food to come out piping hot and quick, again that wasn't the case. I'm not sure what the people with the 4 and 5 start reviews got or what day they decided to visit that the service was on point. This one was pretty bad and I don't think they can make up for my visit

Sserra S.

Yelp
Found plastic in my food more than once. See photo. Nice people but this is disgusting

Mark R.

Yelp
Don't waste your time. The chairs at the high top tables are the most uncomfortable seating I have ever sat in at a restaurant - which is why those tables are always available. Secondly, you better like the menu EXACTLY the way it is printed - because they allow no substitutions or customization. They are not good enough to take that approach. The food is just OK at best, not good at worst. We will never be back. Do yourself a favor, drive a little further north and go to El Torero...
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
We ordered Nachos Al Carbon, Quesadilla Al Carbon, 3 tacos, and flan. Very cute place. Good customer service. Food was just okay-- looks great, but not much flavor.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
I dined at this establishment tonight and was impressed. The space itself was laid out very well. It has a nice long bar with garage doors opening to a great outdoor patio. Once seated it didn't take long until I was presented with chips & salsa. While there wasn't a large selection of draft beer, it was cold, which is my favorite type of beer. I ordered a small queso dip that really wasn't that small. Starting to fill up on the queso, salsa and chips I ordered just a single steak taco and it was delicious. Next time I will skip the queso and order another taco. The service was very friendly and prompt. I highly recommend Rojo Cocina and will be back again!
google avatar

Julia J.

Yelp
We hade lovely lunch here today. We had chips, salsa and queso with jalapeños. The salsa was wonderful, spicy but too spicy. I had the baja grilled steak burrito. I'm very full, serving was big! The skinny margarita was wonderful. My husband loved his steak fajitas and the kids enjoyed their burritos too. We will be back!

Eric M.

Yelp
Food was good, but the service was a bit too excessive. We had a party of 15 and once they saw us, they had started giving us food after but kept mixing up the orders or would give more food that wasn't even ordered. I hope they don't act like this normally or they would stress themselves too much or seem like they wanted more money.
google avatar

Simon K.

Yelp
My family and I have been sparsely coming here for years, whenever we're doing something at Roswell. We have even been here before the redecoration, in about 2017. Compared to the standard-fare Mexican food, it is pretty tasty and satisfying for the ravenous. The ground beef was very flavorful. The environment is pretty quiet, which I certainly can't complain about. The salsa is to DIE for, and there is a slim chance that you may lose your appetite while feasting on it with their warm chips. I don't necessarily come here that often anymore, but when I do, I am always rather satisfied.

Daniel Q.

Yelp
Rojo Chamblee used to be one of my favorite restaurants -- my wife and I ate here regularly -- but they have cut back on their portion sizes so that, after picking up three adult meals we've received what amount to children's portions. My side of rice is literally three teaspoons of rice of rice. (See attached photo.) The side of beans wasn't much better, and even the burrito is small. A phone conversation with the manger was merely passed to the server, who then said she would, in turn, bring it to the manager's attention. I'll take my regular business to a restaurant that appreciates its regulars.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
I just had the best fajita of my life! It wasn't called a fajita and had chorizo in it!! The flavor and quality were off the charts!
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
Rojo has become a staple in our household! The service is great (if you go more than twice, they'll remember your drink orders!), the wait is short, and I haven't had a bad meal yet. Would highly recommend for an easy taco night with friends!
google avatar

Nita V.

Yelp
Service was incredibly slow even on a Tuesday evening. Food is average, the salsa was probably the best part of the meal. Bland vegetarian options and guacamole had no salt. Our server seemed very new, did not know menu items or seem familiar with ingredients. Would come back for chips and salsa and drinks on the patio but the food was just standard.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
Rojo is my new favorite spot in Chamblee! The staff is the best in town, and the food is incredible. Baja & Southwest tacos are my fave. If you're lookin to fill up, try the Flautas Verde. Guac is some of the best I've had. On top of that, they've got a great beer selection. When you go, make sure to ask for Leo or Pi! And oh yea, la Bestia!!!
google avatar

Mary grace E.

Yelp
This restaurant has the coolest vibe on their covered outdoor patio. They have fantastic margaritas and our favorite item on the menu is their taco salad which is better than any taco salad I've ever had!
google avatar

E B.

Yelp
Went on a "Next Door" referral and it wasn't worth the 10 minute drive . The place is really festive looking and they play awesome music . The good ended with the food . The absolutely bland watery salsa should have clued me in but the chicken fajitas literally had no taste and felt partially microwaved . Just not very good . Staff was semi friendly but I would not return . Oh well .
google avatar

Maddie D.

Yelp
Terrible! The service is slow and on top of that my husband and I experienced food poisoning that was awful. Would not recommend. You should definitely just go to taqueria del sol or Pure

Michael T.

Yelp
Delicious food, reasonable prices and excellent service. Highly recommend the cheese dip.
