Yelp
Enjoyed dining here very much. Roman Wolves is a buzzy new Italian place that has taken over Cafe Gratitude's old space and is packed.
Parking: absolutely sucks on a weekend night. 1/5. Ditto traffic in Little Italy on a Sat. night with street closures.
Service: 5/5. Giacomo was a fabulous server, kind and efficient. Oscar was a terrific busser, and everyone else bringing things to table or refilling water were extremely nice. Very hospitable!
Ambiance (outside): 5/5. Indoors is much more hectic and loud - but they have a really nice little area outside for seating. A gazillion times better than the sidewalk patios over on India Street, where people are jostling into you. It's pretty quiet here, and there's foliage separating the tables from passersby. Nice music soundtrack. Thumbs up for the sidewalk seating.
Wine: 4.5/5: If I'm spending $18/glass, I don't want it to be meh. The Corte Alla Flora Montepulciano was quite yummy.
Food: 4/5 overall. Appetizers were the least impressive.
--Mozzarella in Carrozza: this place's concept is upscale Roman food. This was a pretty straightforward rendering of how they do it in Jersey. Similar taste to mozzarella sticks.
--"Roman style pinse" flatbread. This was not bad - but we've been going to Tavola Nostra - and their Roman style pinse is off the hook. This looked like a regular round neopolitan pizza, with thicker crust and much busier toppings. I didn't hate it - but I wouldn't recommend to anyone to come here just for this.
Salad: my sweetie got the Mediterranea and really liked it. Some people were hating on the salads in reviews - this was large and fresh.
Entrees: yum! Now we're talking!
--My sweetie got the Pollo alla Romana and loved it. I tasted the mashed potatoes on the plate: perfectly seasoned! Yum.
--I got the salmone frescati. I feel like I'm having the same dishes everywhere and this was unique. Very tasty pea/asparagus risotto, with pistachio crusted salmon in a yummy sauce. The risotto was not quite al dente, but I'm good with soft risotto - and the flavors were great. Ate up every morsel.
Dessert:
--My sweetie ordered the Tartufo, described as a chocolate and pistachio gelato ball, wrapped in dark chocolate. As you can see in the photo, it was not wrapped in dark chocolate - there was a teeny bit of chocolate gelato and mostly pistachio. Having said that to warn off any choco-holics from disappointment, it was actually quite tasty. A nice dessert - not too sweet at all, but very refreshing. My sweetie was surprised because he wanted chocolate - but he ended up liking it.
As is the trend in 2024, cheese wheel pasta dishes are sprouting up all over Little Italy/Hillcrest, etc, as well as here. In addition, Roman Wolves also brought a gift of a limoncello shot at the end, which I had elsewhere recently. Other than these touches, Roman Wolves did not feel like every other trendy Italian place, but had its own special character and dishes. We loved the patio, our entrees, and the service. Looking forward to coming back and trying the norma pasta.
