Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento - Eater SF

"The Guerrera family immigrated to the US in the late ‘60s from Carlantino, Italy. In 1973, the family opened Roma’s Pizzeria on Franklin Blvd, selling thick crust pizzas with generous toppings. Branch out and order a meatball sandwich; the meatballs are sliced and stuffed into light and crusty Italian bread, then smothered with marinara sauce and gooey cheese. Also try the wicked spaghetti casserole, which is pasta covered in cheese and sauce and baked to perfection." - Illyanna Maisonet

I haven't been here in awhile and my wife had never been. Tried it out and it was great. Service was good. The pizza had alot of meat! We did half combo half meat lover. I didn't much of a feel of the veggies listed but olives it seemed like. However, I have to say, the meats were cooked perfectly - so I couldn't be too made. Will definitely return and try some of their menu items!

Fantastic pizza for DECADES. This was my grandfather's favorite pizza place and they sell more than just pizza! Smallish parking lot that is shared and the neighborhood may not be able to support much parking so go early. Inside dining available, not sure about outdoor dining. We like to get ours to go.

Google
Love Roma's Pizza! I've been going to Ronna's locations in Sacramento for over 30 years. I have never been disappointed. It is usually my first stop on my way into Sacramento when I visit my family. The service is always outstanding. The food is always fresh, and there is never any skimping on ingredients at Roma's!

First time for me (don't live in CA) My family who are locals have been regulars here since 1978. Ordered manicotti and a half cheese half pepperoni & sausage pizza. Excellent service & food!!! Would definitely become a regular if I lived here.

A Sacramento icon. You have to go at least once in your life. This is the best pizza place in Sac. Everything is good. The staff are the best. Generations of families come here to eat. A great place for gatherings.

If you're craving an authentic taste of Italy, look no further than this charming mom-and-pop establishment. Their Italian-style pizza is a true delight, starting with a buttery crust that perfectly complements the burst of flavors in each topping. Every bite is a testament to the care and tradition behind their craft. The lasagna here is nothing short of perfection. Made fresh to order, it arrives at your table in a sizzling pan, with layers of tender pasta, rich sauce, and gooey cheese that melt together in every mouthful. And let’s not forget the garlic bread. It's seasoned just right, with enough garlic to enhance the flavor without overpowering the dish. It's the perfect companion to your meal. If you visit, I highly recommend the all-meat pizza, lasagna, chef salad, and, of course, the garlic bread. Each dish showcases the passion and authenticity that make this place a local gem.

Always the best pizza in Sacramento just love it ❤️

Google
I honestly don't know why this place has good reviews. I mean the staff are friendly, but that's where the compliments stop. The place looks rundown, the pizza tastes doughy and flavorless, the cheese and pepperoni were just falling off the pizza, the garlic bread was the most boring bread I've ever had, and the service is super slow. The ceiling fans were on, and the place was freezing. There's limited seating. There was a family there with loud, unhinged kids. Definitely was not a great experience for me. I would not recommend wasting your money here.

Yelp
4.5 - wow, didn't know I needed this in my life I've lived in Sacramento for 8 years now and my uncle recently took me to Romas. I feel betrayed that he hasn't taken me here sooner. Fancy pizza places are great, but man, nothing beats an old school joint that makes a mean pie. It really brought me back to the old Pizza Hut days with good ingredients, a crunchy salad with ranch, Pepsi before they changed the recipe, and your thighs sticking to the plastic booth your sitting in. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you probably have good knees and no home owner's insurance. Anyways! Ordered a pepperoni, combo, and Romas Special. Loved em all. Service was attentive but with a sprinkle of "cmon kid I ain't got all day." Made me feel right at home. Parking lot is decent but is shared with a laundromat next door

Yelp
This must have been the largest most delicious personal pizza I've ever ordered and indulged in in my life I came across this place after going to pick up an item. I saw it on the market place and I got lost and I came across this little plaza and noticed at the corner. There was a little pizzeria little hole in the wall. I decided to stay in the car and make a call and whoever the woman was that navigated with me, she pitched in and gave me all the toppings that I enjoyed vegetarian and that was the best pizza with a side salad This review is way overdue, and it's way overdue time for me to make another visit

Yelp
Remember the old school Italian restaurants? You know, the ones with great pizza, raviolis, spaghetti, meat balls and sausage? No fancy decorations and the aroma of delicious food. And bread. Lots of bread. This is THAT place! I enjoyed the ravioli and meatballs and my parents had the baked ravioli which was covered in tomato sauce and cheese. All plates were under $20 which is a rare find today. Check this place out. My family has been going here for years and it's always been fantastic. Can't wait to attack the left overs in the fridge!

Yelp
Best in town , been eating there for years .try the all meat marble!! It is the best!!

Yelp
It's time to share an updated review! Romas Pizzeria continues to be our go-to choice for takeout pizza, especially when we have friends over. We'll often pair the pizza with our home cooked wings and do it purposely so we can order extra ranch and blue cheese to pair with our wings. We actually purchase a pint of ranch and blue cheese every time we grab takeout from here now. The food quality is consistently good, the menu is fairly priced and the portions are generous. When I don't feel like getting pizza, I'll order one of the Roma's Special Dinners that comes with an entree, salad and garlic bread for $15-$17. These are easily two meals worth of food too. We have yet to dine in, but the service is always great and it's never too long of a wait, even on busier weekends.

Yelp
If you want an old school vibe italian restaurant that makes authentically good pizza and pasta, come here! It does not look like much from the outside but their food is deliciosa! I really liked their pizza crust! If you are a fan of sourdough, sort of crusty bread and a pizza topping that tastes like Mama made it, come here! I wish their dining room played some Italian music, then we'd be set! Try their pizza sandwich too! Bueno!

Yelp
Really wanted to give this place a try but sadly enough when I arrived after driving an hr they told me that my order was given to someone else. Will review after getting my order...let's see if the food changes my rating Update: So far the food was decent, the dough was a little tough. The combo pizza we got was hefty on the ingredients and the pepperoni pizza was actually pretty good. The garlic cheese bread...I should have gotten it without the cheese. Now, would I come again to this place? Maybe not for delivery, but I'm willing to try it as dine in. P.s. wish we took pictures but we started eating as soon as we got home because we were SUPER hungry after a long wait.

Yelp
The food is extremely salty. The meatballs are dense and chewy. The ravioli is good but could use a bit more filling. The garlic bread is really good but has a lot of oregano on it. The soup is also very oregano forward. The inside is a bit lacking - old, breaking down, a bit dirty. The service is a mixed bag between very friendly and extremely rude, so you don't really know what you're gonna get. The pizza is the best thing here for sure.

Marisela M.

Yelp
My all time favorite pizza restaurant. Great pizza and great service. I have been dining and taking out from this place for many many years. I have traveled from the Bay Area to pick up a Romas Special and believe me when I say, the pizza travels well. It only needs a few minutes in the oven for the hot tasty dine in taste.

Robert C.

Yelp
This was our first visit. The pizzas were excellent and larger than we expected. It's a very unassuming place in a non-descript stripmall, so if you're looking for upscale atmosphere, this isn't for you. We used to sailboat in the Delta and Roma's reminded me of the classic Delta hideaway places we used to seek out for good, classic food. We were there for a sit-down lunch on a Thu and were the only non-takeout customers, so I hope this isn't a sign of business not being great (they have a ton of tables and look like they can accommodate large groups). The Roma's Special (Tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, salami, pepperoni, sausage, olives, linguisa, beef, green pepper) was the most heavily loaded pizza I'd ever eaten. My doctor wouldn't approve but the menu has healthier options. My wife had the margherita pizza that she enjoyed. We both ordered the 12" size, thinking we'd have enough left for dinner. There was, with leftovers for the next day. My only regret is that we don't live closer. Next time we'll have to try their Italian dinners. If the pizza is any indication, I'm sure they're great.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall. Decor and tables are a bit rundown but the food is excellent. Dont come here expecting luxury this is a small divey place with great food and great service. So adjust your expectations. As soon as you walk in the staff are quick to greet you and it smells so good! I had the Lasagna dinner special which comes with garlic bread and a salad. Everything was delicious. The lasagna so cheesy and hot, the garlic bread perfectly toasted and garlicy and the salad with pepperoncini and salami, so good. Will I be back? MOST DEFINITELY. Should I be eating that much cheese? NO. BUT IT IS SO GOOD!

Yelp
Finally, I found a pizza spot with real ingredients!!!! OMG. IM SO happy With My Pizza. I GOT FULL OFF TWO SLICES. Now That's Heavy! First time here and I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the pizza but got ROBBED with the garlic cheese bread for $8. It was more like to hot dog buns with melted cheese. That pissed me off so much I may never go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this pizza. Truly. Street cred, longtime biz. Hustling in the 'hood. My sister was visiting and we decided to try a pizza here based on a family recommendation. I was concerned walking in when we arrived to pick up our order as it really didn't smell delicious. Unfortunately the crust was a dealbreaker. It was like firm flatbread and very hard to chew, it had no overlap with any other pizza crust I've had before. I didn't like the toppings, sister said the cheese was the best part. I really couldn't finish one piece. For the price and drive it was a let-down.

Yelp
I am pretty surprised that I haven't written a review for this place ever. I've been eating here over 20 years I know that ....at minimum. Funny enough, though I've only ever ordered the pizza. My friend swears by some of the pasta dishes but that's not my life. I haven't eaten here in about a year maybe ... Sacramento is such a good pizza town that I've been trying some of the other spots lately. That's kind of a good thing though because I was on my way home from work and picked up a pizza here for the family and man I forgot how much I really like this place. They have a really nice thick crust and plenty of toppings and for a decent price. Parking lot is pretty tight at this location but it's worth it. There's a secret to the spot if you're only going for a quick pick up but I'm not gonna put it up here because that's how secrets don't become secrets.
google avatar

Yeng H.

Yelp
Delicious!!!!!!!! quite a few things on the menu that I'll need to come back a few times for to try out.
google avatar

Ricardo P.

Yelp
I can honestly say this is one of my favorite places in Sacramento! I've been coming to this pizza place since I was a kid. It really is good pizza, I've been to many places and overall flavor always on point! At time service can been great and not so great but still good. Overall would always recommend this place to someone who hasn't tried!
google avatar

Walter N.

Yelp
This place is the best. Old school and reminds you of the 90's. The Roma Special is the best pie in town. I can't stand when pizza has too much sauce on it, but they use the perfect amount.

Myron B.

Yelp
Disappointed to the fullest. This one is hard and it tastes burnt. I would rather go to Little Caesars waste of money and time. Whoever the cook is he needs to be retrained l. No, longer my favorite pizza. I'll give it a 1/10.
google avatar

Misty B.

Yelp
I'm talking pizza pizza! You won't be dissatisfied, it's not for the faint of heart because there are no skimpy toppings around here!!!! This is how pizza should be and I must say I'm really satisfied with this places variety and quality. Check them out if ur tired of eating mostly crust n sauce and want a hearty pizza for a change.
google avatar

Ed F.

Yelp
yup - had to have this to celebrate the closing of 2022. One of the best old school pizzas in sac.
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
Romas Pizza is my go to pizza restaurant. I have been getting pizza from Romas since the 90's and they have never disappointed. There are always a plethora of toppings along with great crust. I also love the service because everyone is kind and accommodating as needed. Their prices are comparable to other pizza restaurants which I appreciate. There is a lot more than pizza on the menu. There are many other Italian dishes that I will try...one day. Until then, keep any pizza coming especially with anchovies!

Yelp
I came with my family one night and I asked the front that I wanted to pick up a pizza I ordered and they waved me over to a older waiter who sat us down. I tried to explain that I just wanted to pick up my pizza but got ignored and as he continued to put menus down. I repeated my self and got yelled WTF?! I was so irritated but I held my tongue, trying to be understanding and thinking maybe he's just having a bad day. And I wanted my pizza and my family was hungry. But there were other families eating and that old fart continued to be short and rude when they made requests for items. The pizza tasted just like regular pizza. They are generous with the meat but not enough cheese and sauce to hold the toppings from rolling off the slices which it made it dry and lacking in full flavor. The crust was way too dry and not good. My family didn't enjoy it and agreed we could have gotten dominos for half the price and half the wait...and not get yelled at. Second time coming here and will be my last. This place isn't what I remember a couple years ago. Before the pizza was amazing and the service was great and I've boasted to many friends. Definitively Not a friendly place to dine in, definitely not a place for even a casual date. Customers and staff don't look vey happy. Hope they get rid of the old guy, he's mean. I'm from the area the location is kind of in the hood so just lock up your belongings and don't walk alone. Parking lot was small and full so I found street parking. They have a second location on Folsom that I've frequented more and better location. I just hope their pizza has stayed consistent and they are nicer.
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
I'm Italian so it's hard to find good food that I don't dislike. This place is delicious. They have pizza and also dinner plates. It's very quaint inside. You can dine inside or take your pizza to go. The service is great and the cook always smiles at me. Love coming here!

Dena R.

Yelp
I will always love Romas pizza and the ambience however, lately we have been overcharged or mistakes were made on our orders that are costly. The first time we ate at the restaurant we paid the bill and left a tip. The male waiter tapped into my debit card the next day and took an additional $20 from my checking account for a tip even though we left over 22%. I did contact the restaurant and complained. Pay cash only! We ordered five pizzas for pick up and only three pizzas were prepared and we were overcharged. Recently we dined in and reviewed the bill thoroughly and realized we were overcharged by $35 and the bill was corrected. We have been going to Romas since we were children and raised our children on Roma's. Shame on on us for being ripped off three times. Check your bill and pay cash!

Yelp
The service and food at Roma's Pizzeria is TOP NOTCH! Wonderful staff and the authentic italian food is AMAZING! Great family restaurant, owned by a family who deeply cares and lives by the American family values! Highly recommend!

Kim B.

Yelp
I used them to cater my father's Celebration of Life. They were on time, and food was hot when it arrived. Everyone loved the food. We were all very happy. Tony was fantastic to work with and I am looking forward to using them in the future.

Yelp
Best pizza in town by far! The only pizza my family will eat highly recommend pasta is bomb also

Yelp
Been coming here for close to 50 years love this place when it's gone there will be no more !!

Yelp
This place has great service and good food! I highly suggest this place especially to eat with family.

Monique R.

Yelp
Now this is how pizzas supposed to taste ordered combination and believe it or not it didn't taste like cardboard. Their red chili flakes even tasted fresh. We were in and out for take out less than 10 mins thanks guys

Yelp
best location is in South Sacramento, me and my dad are regulars there. We love the pasta and the pizza eetz amore! im not sure if the owners are black or I-TAL-IAN or what. but the bar is tight, and the indoor seating is perfect. Laundry is right next door, in case you are multi tasking it today and need your clothes cleaned. Ask for Alitzia there, she takes care of me and my dad sometimes, dont ask for her help unless you bring 20$ and already got your food. trust me on this. Thank you for always being consistent Romas Pizzeria, five stars for something I ate a long time ago. Combination pizza, or the cheese ravioli, no meat. and now you guys are VEGETARIAN/VEGAN FRIENDLY. dont eat the crust if you're Keto.
google avatar

Cheng H.

Yelp
Pizza dough was on the hard side, seems like it was over cooked!! Toppings were decent. I expected more from a $30 pizza
google avatar

Colette C.

Yelp
Most times, they are the best. Last night, it wasn't. But they got 5 stars because the sozen or so times I was there, it was primo. Usually, the toppings are evenly spread, and the crust is crispy. Last night, though, the toppings were mostly at the center, and the crust was soggy. I hope they talk to the pizza cooks about it.
google avatar

Juli-Anna M.

Yelp
The pizza never disappoints. The service is great even when they are busy. Try the Roma's Special!
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
Found this spot on just a whim driving by and damn good thing we stopped. Did a 50/50 pepperoni and combination with jalapeños. It's the go to pizza spot when I want a good slice.
google avatar

Yelp
Romas is the best. Every time I go to Sacramento, I have to eat there. There pizza/pasta and salads are awesome. Highly recommend it.
google avatar

Tera V.

Yelp
I've been going to this place as a child to now, as a grown adult. This place is very nostalgic and I love the food here, it always gets you full! Service over the years have gone a bit downhill though, sometimes the workers can be a bit rude. But I will always have love for this place.
google avatar

Karina R.

Yelp
such great customer service Jenny and Juan have been serving me since I was a kid and still to this day they work with so much optimism and care with my needs and food such great people and deserve the best tips evaaaaaa Restaurant is also very clean and literally spotless and that's always a plus and don't take it personal if workers are busy roaming around they are literally a busy restaurant and have so many orders to fulfill. I don't eat pork but the cheese pizza is sooo goood and cheesy oh and the ranch is amazing !! the salad is amazing the spaghetti is amazing like wow so much variety you can dine in or take it to go like Romas has earned their bragging rights and have established a family oriented restaurant with their blood and sweat and if you thinking of coming to eat here we'll what's stopping you ? a little cheese never hurt anybody it's great ! Oh and I am real customer I have been dining here since I was 9 I am now 30 now don't do the math because I don't want to expose my age but yea 2 decades basically. Go down and they even cater can you believe that also reserve a party here as well I have had many parties here My daughters for many years well I hope you enjoy By the way to the owners please open up a Halal Romas pizzeria Below is a photo of the party I had there. - karina

Yelp
I've been a here a couple times and honestly I should be coming here more often! The wife and I dined in last Friday night and surprisingly it wasn't packed. I did notice that a lot of people came and picked up their orders tho. I should've got the name of the woman that took our order and served because she was amazing. So amazing I tipped her $20. Didn't take long for the food to come out. My wife ordered the lasagna and loved it! I ordered a large combination and a pitcher of beer. Our server instead brought me a half pitcher (for now) so that the beer wouldn't get warm and then another half pitcher after I was finished (with the first Half pitcher). That right there was absolutely incredible and thoughtful. I didn't even think of that I was just trying to get as much beer in me as possible haha. We enjoyed our time here at Romas. It was pretty quiet and the staff were all friendly and welcoming. We might just start coming here at least once a month if not twice. It may seem a little pricey but trust me it's worth it. You get fresh ingredients real deal homemade food and generous portions. I only snapped one pic of the pizza and this was after I had taken it home so it wasn't a pic of a fresh pizza. Was still bomb nonetheless.

Hunter L.

Yelp
The most traditional Italian pizza I have ever had in Sacramento. I may be a little bit biased because I have been eating here since I was a child and I am 60 years old but it has not changed a bit. Still fantastic pizza just like it was 40 years ago.

Jaxon G.

Yelp
I Would Recommend Going Here. The Food is great and yummy! And the The service was nice. This should be a 5 star rated Pizzeria.

Adam C.

Yelp
Good pizza but the service here has been getting worst. Called to order take out , asked for a medium everything correct EXCEPT the prices . Online it says 22$ for a medium romas special combination. I asked the worker on the phone is the price is correct and she said "yes they are up to date" . Once I arrive I end up paying $30 for the pizza they said online was 22$. Didn't want to argue with the worker but tried to explain to him and he kept speaking over me.

Michele R.

Yelp
Myself and coworkers absolutely love the pizza here . Romas never disappoints. Quick and friendly service.
google avatar

Alana M.

Yelp
Ordered a mini pizza via DoorDash. The pizza arrived quickly and was much larger than I expected a mini to be ( no complaints there). The ingredients tasted fresh. The crust was just decent. I'd order from here again.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Simply excellent pizzas. Well made with a nice amount of toppings, and their prices are more than fair. Their large is the same size as a Round Table x-large and costs much less!
google avatar

John I.

Yelp
I just wanted to give a shout-out to the cook today 06/13/21 I came in around 1 to complain about my pizza from DD, the night before. I understand sometimes things get messed up or a little old from sitting. I came in because I wanted store credit or something equivalent. The older gentlemen(possibly another cook) told me he would make me a fresh small one for the inconvenience. I really appreciated the remake. Thank you! We enjoyed it the pizza much more this time. Thank you for being understanding. The cook that cooked/handed me the pizza was super nice when giving me my pizza and by surprise he actually made me a much larger pizza than planned. It was delicious! We will back again!
google avatar

Darci K.

Yelp
I had been to this particular Roma's location years ago on a date, and enjoyed the food far more than I enjoyed the company. I hadn't been back in eons, and recently went with friends. The interior was far more days more than what I recalled, and the service reminded me of the TV show Mel's diner. The waitress was fairly curt, and rushed us ordering our food, not paying attention to exactly what we were asking for, or the questions that we'd have about some of the meals on the menu. The dinner salad's were surprisingly delicious, and I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't just a bowl of lettuce with dressing poured over it. I had ordered the lasagna and surprisingly enough, it allegedly was made with 100% beef. That seems to be a rarity in most restaurants, as the meat is usually mixed with either pork or something else. The portion was much larger than I anticipated, but wasn't a whole lot to write home about. It was missing something in the flavor department. Who doesn't like warm garlic bread?! The generous portion of garlic bread was very welcomed, but the bread was nothing to really write home about. It was fairly basic and missed in the taste department as well. Sadly, the patrons that were dining at the other tables were fairly inconsiderate restaurant goers. Several of them were chatting on their cell phones with the cell phones on speaker, others were just loud at their tables discussing things that most people would not discuss in public, and we sat there watching it like a train wreck. So essentially it was dinner and a movie LOL If this were a movie rating scale, I would have to give it two thumbs down.

Joechi M.

Yelp
Been going here since I was a kid. One of the best pizza places in Sacramento. Thank you for all the good memorie.
google avatar

Joelle B.

Yelp
3 stars because I know you are really worth a 5 star but I'm not quite sure what is taking place in the kitchen at my once most favorite Pizzaria in town I had the easiest order with a table full of hungry kiddos and luckily hungry kiddos eat anything but Mommys craving for a Romas red sauce Pepperoni pizza + a topping of mushrooms turned into a full blown can of mushroom pizza with hardly any sauce. It was a work day and a spurr of the moment dinner craving so unfortunately not worth sending back or making the kids wait longer to eat. I've never been disappointed through door dash so I'm not saying I won't give you another try, but please nail this recipe issue and go back to the heart felt pizza we all once loved.
