California’s Sierra Foothills AVA Remains a Land of Opportunity for Winemakers | Eater SF

"Although founded in 1980 and long associated with Napa, Rombauer has kept a down‑home foothills personality as it expanded into a Plymouth tasting room after outgrowing its Napa production; much of the company’s zinfandel already came from the foothills. Rombauer’s jammy zinfandels and oaky chardonnays are widely distributed — appearing on restaurant lists across the state and on Safeway shelves — yet Bob Knebel emphasizes an approachable culture, interest in local varieties like barbera, and a recognition that leaders will need strategy and thoughtfulness to manage inevitable change as the region grows." - Paolo Bicchieri

When we arrived, we had no issues with parking. The location is easy to find and there are lots of parking spaces. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff. They offer PH balanced filtered water in stylish aluminum bottles, which kept us responsibly hydrated throughout our tour. Our guide was the experienced and friendly Rachel, who answered all of my geeky questions. We enjoyed tastings and cheese pairings. Our favorites were the classic Chardonnays and the Barbera. They have plenty of swag and nibbles to purchase. They are also dog friendly, offering puppy treats and water for your fur babies.

Franklin is a real gold-country gem. He is so knowledgeable and fun, I wish he was at every tasting room I visit. The vine was devine. The 04 Carneros Chard was a real surprise. If you ever wanted a white that taste like a red, this is the one. Don't skip this adorable spot, unless its Frank's day off

I enjoyed our visit to the Rombauer Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills on this rainy day today. We were impressed by the whole experience. The grounds are beautiful, including vineyards rolling across gentle slopes with mountains framing the backdrop, with trees, flowers, and both covered and uncovered seating and tables surrounding the tasting room, creating an ambiance of rustic elegance and a place to shelter from the rain. We were warmly welcomed by the friendly and knowledgeable staff who were happy to answer our questions and suggest tasting of the varieties of wine they produce. As we tasted the selection, I found the wine to be excellent across the board. By the end of our visit to Rombauer Vineyards, I felt not only that I had tasted some truly great wine in a gorgeous setting, but also that I had received genuine hospitality from a staff that cares deeply about the wine they make. I very much look forward to returning to these beautiful grounds to further explore their offerings! From the scenery to the wine itself and especially the friendly faces, Rombauer gives you an outstanding winery experience!

If you’re ever wandering through the Sierra Nevada foothills and wondering where joy in liquid form is bottled—stop wondering. It’s Rombauer. Walking into Rombauer Vineyards feels less like visiting a winery and more like being invited into a secret club where the password is “Chardonnay.” And let’s be honest, their Chardonnay is legendary for a reason—it’s basically sunshine with a hint of butter and a side of applause. Even people who swear they don’t like Chardonnay suddenly become converts here. But don’t stop there. The reds? Smooth as Sinatra. The Zinfandel? Like a campfire singalong in a glass—warm, a little wild, and guaranteed to make you smile. Every pour manages to strike that magical balance of being both serious enough to impress your wine-snob friend and fun enough to make you forget you have a wine-snob friend. The tasting experience itself is first-class without being stuffy. The staff are the kind of people you wish you could recruit for every dinner party: knowledgeable but never pretentious, quick with a story, and even quicker with the next pour. They make you feel like family—family that happens to know a lot about grape clones and oak barrels. And the setting? Gorgeous. You’re tucked right into the rolling Sierra Nevada foothills, with golden light spilling over the vineyards. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to take a hundred photos—and then put your phone down because the wine deserves your full attention. Bottom line: Rombauer Sierra Nevada isn’t just a tasting room—it’s a mood. A very happy, very delicious mood. If wine country had a “treat yourself” button, this would be it.

Franklin was so kind and tentative. We told him about our favorites and he recommended the perfect wines. He is the wonderful representative for this amazing winery.

We're NEVER disappointed with our visits to Rombauer winery. This was our first time at Sierra Foothills location. Eddie G. Was AMAZING! He's friendly and a Somileir . He gave us tips on the ideal wine temperatures and cheese pairings. He even does virtual tasting events. We had a 5* experience today and will definitely be back!

Very nice winery with great wines. Hostess was extremely knowledgeable and fun. Wine quality always great from white to famous Zinfandel. Great indoor and outdoor .

10/10 recommend checking our Rombauer! Just signed up for the wine club to continue to enjoy the wine. The late harvest Chardonnay is amazing and I highly recommend picking up a bottle of the Joy port as well. Rachael is amazing! She helped us out and was so friendly and kind.

Yelp
We stopped into Rombauer without a reservation (which I probably wouldn't recommend, since it was packed by the end of our tasting -- we just got lucky with our timing!). So thankful we did. The sweetest brunette host (wish I remembered her name!) welcomed us warmly and sat us in the wine tasting room, which was perfect since it was so warm outside. That's where Franklin took over -- and he was fantastic. Kind, funny, and so knowledgeable! He really made the tasting experience memorable, sharing insights while keeping it light and enjoyable. The wines were just as wonderful as the service, and we ended up leaving with quite a few bottles we're excited about. Such a great experience all around -- we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
My friends and I came here for a birthday outing over the weekend and were a little surprised to experience such rude staff. One of the workers, Nathan, kept asking us if we had a membership and was really not friendly. We kept assuring him that someone in our group did have a membership, but we ended up buying a bottle anyway to waive the tasting fees. We also had to walk over to a window to get more tastings, which wasn't a big deal but it seemed a bit careless to make customers walk to a window instead of having someone cater for a birthday event. The workers gave us little information on the wines and just seemed pretentious. I'd recommend going to different wineries that have friendlier staff and better wines. This winery's grapes are not even local.

Yelp
Plymouth-WINE???? Yes, yes, and yes! What a fantastic spot to sit outside and enjoy a bottle of their fabulous Sauvignon Blanc. Our hostess could not have been nicer and more informative. The entire wine bar area is very chic and the outside is welcoming with fans and beautiful hardwood tables. Absolutely cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
If you go here for wine tasting, have nothing less than their reserves. Everything else is available at your local box store or liquor box store BUT you will have a great experience just because of the ambiance. You need to buy your snacks inside their retail store. Their restrooms are like giant porta potties in a trailer. The process is pretty organized. Make your reservation and when you get there, your reservation is assigned to one of their servers. Shrugging my shoulders..... best part of this tasting experience? The server! Go figure!

Yelp
Came on Labor Day to enjoy some family time with my sister, mom, sister in law and niece. The wine is delicious. Started with their 2024 Sauvignon Blanc. So crisp and refreshing! Relaxing atmosphere. Staff is lovely and upbeat! Love this place!

Yelp
My Wife is a member at Ron Bauer in Plymouth. We came out here to pick up a shipment and planned on having lunch here and spend the day here to find out that they don't serve lunch and that even to pick up a shipment if you stay you need reservations, apparently they stuck a at of table where the sun was beating down and it was very uncomfortable because the wine turned warm real fast and we had to wait for somebody to leave to go confiscated table that was in the shade

Yelp
Am a member ( for the moment).... Buy over 3 cases a year - we were members at the Napa location but quit because the people there were so rude and pretentious ( funny for people making barely above min wage).... But got talked into this location - and have been happy until last call in where girl that answered during fall harvest party was soo ridiculously rude and pretentious ( sounded all of 21)... am pretty sure this place has lost our business - we go to a winery because we want to enjoy the experience , not to waste our time listening to someone who really should not even have a job. Would put a zero star on this if I could! As a follow up as someone that goes to "a lot" of wineries - the wine is average ( a bit above a typical bottle) but nothing spectacular - buy it as one to set out when a large group of non wine people over as it's easy - if you're looking for a better wine - there are hundreds more out there without the pathetic group of young wanna bees there - in case you have not realized - yes have cancelled my membership - moving on.

They offer complimentary PH balanced filtered water in stylish aluminum bottles, which kept us responsibly hydrated throughout our tour. Our guide was the experienced and friendly Rachel, who answered all of my geeky questions. We enjoyed tastings and cheese pairings in a well ventilated outdoor setting made up of comfy patio furniture and shade. There is also an indoor tasting room if it's your preference. Our favorite wines were the classic Chardonnays and the Barbera. My memorable moments were also hearing about the stories of the founder. They also have plenty of swag and nibbles to purchase. Yelp
Instantly right off the bat, their cold air conditioning hits your inner soul. It's a nice refuge from the brutal summer heat, although there still are people out there on their nice patio. The 2023 Rombauer Sauvignon Blanc was absolutely splendid. It had a very sweet flavor but also a hint of earthy, wonderful blend. Their complimentary sea salt crackers were the cherry on top. All of their wines are stellar. Absolutely no complaints from me. Bottom line/TLDR: amazing winery.

Yelp
Beautiful and comfortable tasting room by the fire. Easy to schedule. Serene gave us a welcome pour. Selection of cheese and hummus and crackers were delish. Amanda was a delightful and knowledgeable sommelier. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Rombauer has really put it all together. The Amador tasting room has great wine, great friendly staff and a well crafted environment that makes going there fun for a couple or a group. Nathan and the crew there are welcoming and have continued to keep Amador the "anti-Napa" where it's laid back and really enjoyable. My suggestion, take a ride out to Amador and enjoy yourself some good times with some friends and or that special someone. Thank you Rombauer staff for making visit after visit well worth the trip!

Yelp
Had a fantastic wine tasting experience here. Rombauer Chardonnay has always been a favorite. We made a last minute outdoor wine tasting for a late Sunday afternoon (1.5 hour duration). It couldn't have been better. We were greeted and brought to a table immediately at check-in. It was crowded and looked like a German beer garden with all the people. Yet, it was very pleasant and relaxing. Our taste master, Jake, was very attentive and did a great job about describing each wine. He also paced it well, and gave us a couple of comparative choices of varietals, which were spot on to taste the differences. The prices can be on the high side, but not out of reason for the quality. We ended up buying some of the better quality choices, and glad we did. Of course, the Chardonnay and also the Zinfandel which were a standout. If there is any downside it works be the number of people, but good for them for a weekend. And parking was challenging. Nonetheless we enjoyed it immensely.

Yelp
Awful wine. Only one of their reserve Zinfandel was even drinkable. Dumped everything else. There's no food. There's a little cold case with cheese wedges and packages of salami-how are you supposed to eat that with no plates or silverware? Weird. No service, this is a get up and go get your own tasting, but they pour it for you at the counter. It looks nice outside, but it's a terrible wine experience.
google avatar

K. C.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Sat outside with our dog and had an absolutely fabulous experience and service. Tastings are pricey, but generous. Recommend trying the reserves, as everything else is pretty much standard Rombauer wine that is available everywhere. Inside and outside ambiance is very comfortable and inviting, which isn't obvious from the street view.

Yelp
We made reservations for a classic tasting on a recent Saturday. It was a bit early for us (10:00 am), but all the noon reservation times were filled. We opted for an indoor tasting. We actually prefer the outdoor seating, but it was a bit on the cooler side so we were happy to be indoors. We tasted six wines. Our favorites were the 2021 Carneros Chardonnay ($40 retail, $34 club member), the 2021 Pinot Noir ($65 retail, $55.25 club), and the 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet ($75 retail, $63.75 club). The tasting fee is $25 per person, but the fee is waived if you are a club member. It really pays to have reservations; when we showed up for our 10:00 am tasting, there was a line of people at the check in counter. We have also come here for just a glass of wine on the outdoor patio, but the outdoor area can fill up too, especially on weekends.

Yelp
Rombauer in Amador. Great place Great customer service Great Wine Nothing else needs to be said!

Yelp
I've been a wine club member of Rombauer for years, and this Plymouth location is just as beautiful as Napa and the people there are amazing. Jake met us at a tasting over a year ago and convinced us to try the Lake Tahoe experience which is phenomenal but today at another event he remembered us and came out and welcomed us and you just feel like one of the family. Let me talk about the wine, I feel in love with the Chardonnay and am still a big fan but the Zinfandels are where it's at, so good! Always my fave winery!!!!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Wines were ok but not a fan of the overpriced Chardonnay. And other wineries in the area have better reds. The best part at Rombauer is the outside seating area. We bought some snacks inside and sat on the couches under the pergola for our tasting. The music playlist was perfect blend of classic rock and easy pop. Giving an extra star for the staff who were very nice and came out with a new wine to try every time our glasses were empty.
google avatar

Nina V.

Yelp
We snagged a last minute reservation and are so glad we did! We had a fantastic experience with our server. He was knowledgeable and really navigated our feedback really well. He noticed that we didn't quite like the listed wines, so he asked a few questions and offered a few pours of wines he thought we'd like, and he was right! Excellent location, great venue, and outstanding customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful service and delicious wine :))) I love This winery and the staff The grounds are well taken care of Lovely day Make a reservation however

Yelp
The wine gets 5 stars . Such good tasting wine. You will not be let down. We like white whites. They do not do a flight of white wine tasting. They only offer two whites in their flights . So we bought a glass of Chardonnay. It was called Carneros Chardonnay 2021. This location is a little smaller than the one we went to in Saint Helena. The music playing sometimes took away from the feel of relaxation. Dean was friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Christine I.

Yelp
Wine tasting weekend started out just lovely with Dean at Rombauer. The grounds are welcoming and there are plenty of snacks and options to choose from if you're feeling snacky. Dean was not only knowledgeable but quite personable as well and provided the perfect balance between pours. As a red wine drinker, I do have to give a shout-out to Rombauer's Carneros Chardonnay, we even took a bottle to go.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Best service at a winery I have experienced. We really enjoyed our time with our knowledgeable host. We were able to try a couple off the list wines that were some of the best cabs I've ever enjoyed. Came for the white but the red stole the show. Some how ended up as a member.. whoops! We brought our own food. Fun place really beautiful. Looking forward to seeing the Napa location.

San F.

Yelp
We love this place! It's one of our favorite destinations, especially whenever we have friends in town. The wine selection, service and venue make for an amazing and memorable experience.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
This was an interesting experience here because we couldn't see the vineyard from the tasting room or the lawn. We had to go up to the window to get a pour for our tasting instead of table service. Wines were described very quickly as they had others to serve behind us. We didn't get a tour of the place and it felt really rushed anytime I had to get more wine. The taste of the wine was ok. They have no food but others brought picnic baskets with their own food which was smart. There were only a couple stalls of bathrooms and the place seems pretty small. The complementary wine right when getting there was nice and somehow our reservation was for the Napa location rather than this one but the manager helped us get a table at this location fairly quickly. If we didn't have to get up so often to get our tasting I would have enjoyed it more. And I had no idea there is an inside so info about the layout when we were sat would have also been nice since we've never been here before.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
Rombauer has done it again with their buttery 2023 Chardonnay. Visited their Plymouth location for a tasting mid week. We were able to sit in the shade of their magnificent redwood trees to enjoy the shade. Their tasting menu comes with recommended food pairings and notes on the taste and bouquet of their wines. And of course we always receive the best service!
google avatar

Kirk F.

Yelp
Rombauer is our go to winery. Service is great. Ask for Dawn but every one is knowledgeable. Partial to their Chardonnay and Three Rivers Zin. Make this a stop on any tour. Be sure to make reservations
google avatar

Jenn V.

Yelp
We decided to pick up our wine club shipment at this location to finally check it out. It was a perfect Saturday afternoon. We had an appointment for wines by the glass to ensure we had a table. We were running more than 30 mins late so I gave them a heads up and it was not an issue at all when we showed up. Outdoor area is spacious with lots of shaded seating areas to choose from. Wines by the glass order window was convenient with friendly service. Tasting room looked spacious but can't comment much further since we just took a quick peek inside. Mobile kitchen was also a nice touch for some tasty small plates while enjoying your wine. It's a further trek for us to head out here vs their Napa location, but could definitely see ourselves coming back again sometime!
google avatar

Janice B.

Yelp
We were spending my birthday week in South Lake Tahoe and decided to visit Rombauer for a Saturday birthday brunch. After the drive, GPS took us on 16 (don't do it, go 49 to Plymouth), we were warmly greeted by Hayley, who offered us a Rombauer Glass(gorgeous wine glass) of Sauvignon Blanc, a big smile and explained everything, took us to the beautiful patio and allowed us to choose our table. We were so lucky to have Keri as our server, you can tell she enjoys her job and from the way she describes and promotes the wine, you know you are in good hands. The flight of 5, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet to Zinfandel were totally to our liking. We had a few questions for Keri about the Club Membership that she was extremely knowledgeable of and had all the answers. We would highly recommend this experience because the crew makes you feel so welcome.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
We've been to the Napa tasting room and didn't have a great experience so we were hesitant to try this location. We made reservations online for an outdoor tasting but it was freezing so we asked to be moved inside and they were able to accommodate us. Surprisingly no pressure to join the wine club. I had to ask for info! Our host inside was great and even though she was swamped she kept wine in our glasses. We had such a good time we ended up joining the wine club and I can't wait to go back! We'll bring blankets next time lol
google avatar

Annie Y.

Yelp
Hands down the best Chardonnay and Merlot I ever had tasted. We came here during the Behind the Cellar Doors event in early March. I knew Rombauer took over the old Renwood building/space and have been wanting to try it. It is definitely Napa price range. The Chardonnay is $36 per bottle. We got a 15% off for buying 6+bottles. Typical bottle of Chardonnay is about $18-$24 per bottle in Amador. I love a good bottle of wine, and don't mind paying a little more. Not to mention, it's nice to not have to drive out to Napa Valley.
google avatar

Yuli L.

Yelp
The second winery on our Itinerary was Rombauer, which is very close to the Young's winery. The winery was quite modern looking and was well kept. There were a lot of outdoor tables. Some are more generous shaded than others. Since my boyfriend's parents are members, the pour lady informed us that we got 2 complimentary glass of wine. So my boyfriend and I paid for our glass; only to find out their friend was offered 4 complimentary samples instead. It's not a big deal, but we later wondering what caused such a hiccups. I tasted their Chardonnay the night before and liked it. It was very refreshing for the summer days. However, when we tried their other selections in the winery, my boyfriend and I actually prefer their Sauvignon Blanc! By then the temperature almost reached 100F, everything was sizzling by the hot sun. While there were umbrellas for the outdoor seatings, they simply don't cover enough for a table of 4! Later we found out you can do regular samplings in the air conditioned room, but by then we decided it was time to move on to the third winery. Overall, I do like their whites and winery. Staff was friendly and everything was clean. I wish their sampling policy was consistent, and had more shaded area (maybe with fans?) so I didn't sweat a much.

Yelp
Interesting how most of the reviews are either one star or five. Mine is in-between. Introduced to Rombauer by a friend of mine, I first visited the Napa location. Carneros Chardonnays make me salivate and Rombauer has this down to an art form. Previously Renwood, which had a more approachable, laid-back feel, there have been a lot of renovations done here. The outside tasting area accommodates both couples and large groups and just recently they have an open-air wine tasting window. On weekends, it can get notoriously crowded so this new area lets people taste at their leisure. You don't get the personalized service, but as I am familiar with their wines and am already a member, I don't need it. I suppose they are keeping the $20 tasting fee to align with the Napa location, but this is more than some Amador wineries charge for a bottle! There isn't another winery in the area that charges this either. I have always had great service here and the young lady who works in the tasting room recognizes me as well which helps. (Ask me if I'm an alcoholic and I'll respond "Wino!")
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Love love love the grounds and the buttery chardonnay...and the service was nice. But for the price...not super impressed. Worth coming for a picnic and ordering one bottle to share.
google avatar

Velia M.

Yelp
One of my favorites! I've only had but the best experience with Rombauer, and all those I bring with me have enjoyed it just as much. This tasting room may not have the same view as the original one, but the wine is just as amazing. I've enjoyed many of their wines, but my favorites are the Proprietor Zin, and Chardonnay! I especially appreciate how they offer an area where one can buy a glass of wine if the tasting room is all booked up.
google avatar

Thomas E M.

Yelp
Wow, this is a treat. Rombauer, one of our favorite places, has gotten two hours closer to our home.... We are sad to see the end of Renwood, but very happy to have Rombauer in the neighborhood. Our first visit to the Amador County outlet resulted in us rejoining the club and picking up a larger variety of their wine. We left with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and two different Zinfandels. We were the first to arrive today, but we had called ahead and made a reservation. I suspect the establishment will soon be crowded, especially on the warm weekends this summer. With this in mind, be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. They will try to squeeze you in, but the reservation makes it a sure thing. Heck, maybe we'll bump into you on our return trip.
google avatar

Roy A.

Yelp
We love Rombauer wines and it's my wife's favorite Chardonnay. Now this is just over 2 hours away but I wanted a relaxing trip other than Napa so off we drove to Plymouth Ca. It's a haul once your off the freeway. Once there we relaxed in a nice setting, and the had a great time tasting. The outdoor patio is perfect for enjoying a beautiful warm day. Nice trip if you want to take a drive in the country. Supper friendly staff.
google avatar

Lee K.

Yelp
This winery is easy to find with a good parking. They have a concierge when you walk in to get you inside of the tasting room or outside if you want. The host was decent. Wine was pretty good but kind of on the expensive side. One of the better wineries in Amador.
google avatar

Annie H.

Yelp
Beautiful, intimate setting. Delicious wines. Be sure to ask for katie as your wine steward! She was friendly, extremely knowledgeable and lots of fun.

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Very friendly and comfortable spot to sample great wine. Became a member and love their Chardonnay! Comfortable tables and outdoor space. Bring a little picnic lunch and have a great visit!

Stephen M.

Yelp
We had a reservation today for our people at Rombauer in Plymouth. Our server, Jake, was great and fun to be around. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. As usual, the wine was great and we enjoyed every drop. We sat outside but were done before it got too hot today (Rombauer has indoor seating as well). We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Lovely winery, super friendly staff and delicious wine. One of my favorite wineries. While we waited for our table we even received a complimentary glass of wine. How nice is that! Looking forward to visiting again.

Terri H.

Yelp
Great service from Dawn and very knowledgeable about wines and the local area! Bought 4 bottles of the Zinfandel which is exceptional in my opinion, lovely grounds to enjoy also. Definitely will come back to this winery in the future.

Yelp
I have always appreciated Rombauer Chardonnay and our visit to the winery in Plymouth exceeded our expectations. The host, Jake Hoyt , was a superb representative for the winery. The winery has very nice outdoor seating. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
google avatar

Robyn B.

Yelp
The name speaks for itself! Rombauer is amazing and you can't find a bad wine. The tough part is deciding which is your favorite. Im not a white wine drinker but love their Chardonnay! Make sure you make reservations as this is one of the more popular stops in Amador County. The weather was beautiful and the place was packed. The staff was super awesome and on top of all your needs. One of the people I was with joined the wine club - what was nice was there was absolutely no pressure and we actually brought it up. I have been to other wineries and they try to sell you the club real hard...not Rombauer. Can't wait to pop open my bottle of zin!
google avatar

Shey L.

Yelp
One of our go to's when wine tasting! I mean, the wine is iconic! It's in a beautiful area. The service is always on point with spot on explanations with each different wine tasting. And we even got an extra poor, which we ended up ordering a bottle. Cute picture opportunities too. Forgot to get pics this time, but we'll be back!

Marilynn M.

Yelp
We had such a great first time experience at Rombauer Plymouth Winery yesterday 9-21-23 thanks to Rachel our server! She is knowledgeable , fun and welcomed our out of town family from NY with their Golden Retriever 'Tate!' Thanks Rachel!
