Ron Gastrobar Oriental Downtown

"Subdued lighting, Asian decor and natural materials set the mood inside, while a celebrity bartender mixes cocktails behind the extensive bar. This place has a lovely bustling atmosphere! The ducks you can see dry-ageing come into their own in fabulous Chinese/Indonesian dishes. Authenticity and a modern playfulness are combined here with a sure touch. Whether you choose the dim sum, the Peking duck or the rijsttafel (a medley of dishes with rice), this is a real culinary adventure." - Michelin Inspector

Overall good but for the price, 150euro, missing the wow factor. Was not just us but many tables the same , service of the food was slow which meant we did not have time for dessert . We had two bites , and 4 dishes. Nothing really bad with the food but we were expecting something special , for the price, what saved the food was the sauces, but it was missing the wow factor . Service, atmosphere and decor were good.

As an Asian, At first I was having doubt since I was a bit skeptical about it, but it turned out that the food they make is very inspiring and creative! The taste and texture are one of the best comparing to other Asian restaurants. The atmosphere portrays some sort of old Shanghai vibe to me…😂

Overall it’s good for an interesting oriental food experience with nice environment and service. I ordered Waugh Siu Mai, shrimp dumpling and fried rice with shrimp paste. The Siu Mai and dumpling were traditional in the format but the inside was a bit modified, they tasted good but the Mayonnaise was absolutely not necessary in the dish, they hid the flavor of the dish itself, so I’ll ask to not add it next time. The service was absolutely nice, I had a warm talk with the crew, hope I’ll see u next time.

Been living in Asia for kind sometime, but this was an amazing Asian fusion food journey. We visited this place for my wife’s bday with a group of 10 +, and all communication from the start went very well and in a very professional way. We had an awesome experience! The staff was very good, they had a very good knowledge about each dish that has been served. The live music is a good addition to the overall atmosphere. The duck was amazing, so tender and soft melting in your mouth. Will definitely come back. Musty try when you’re in Amsterdam. Keep up the good work!

We got a table for 10 person very last minute for a team dinner and had the best time! Beautiful atmosphere and the staff was so attentive and friendly. Our menu for the whole table was AMAZING - truly just delicious. Thanks for the lovely time. Will definitely be back.

If there’s ever a spot trying a little too hard to be ‘oriental’, Ron’s is it. The interior is dark with loud music and small cosy tables. You’ll see ducks hanging from their necks in a cold fridge downstairs, presumably the same ones that will grace your plates later with lackluster skin. Food. There were six of us and we ended up trying the blue and red menus. Shrimp toast… I assume the fusion here was the addition of avocado inside with the shrimp. Flavor was OK, but it was a little oil logged. Dim sum was interesting. The wagyu siu mai with truffle had a decent flavor. Har gao was black and not white as it is traditionally. Both that and the gyozas were good. The fried fish was the best dish. Sadly, the duck did not live up to the hype and not what Peking duck should be. The skin wasn’t crispy and the meat wasn’t tender/fall apart. It’s accompanied by a sad amount of thin dough wraps for you to create your pancake with. Note: There were six of us and six wraps. So, you’ll have to ask for more immediately. And it takes a while. Service was decent, but did slow down as the restaurant got busier. Music was loud and it got harder to hear as the evening wore on. Ironically, they tell you that you’ve only got 2 hours at your table, and yet they were slow to take orders, bring out food, etc. Loads of amazing restaurants in Amsterdam that this was disappointing for our last night in town. Particularly at the price point.

My husband and I recently embarked on a delightful culinary adventure at Ron Gastrobar Oriental Downtown in Amsterdam, and it turned out to be a memorable experience that exceeded our expectations. After days of indulging in Dutch and other European cuisines, we sought something more exotic and were drawn to this restaurant based on its Michelin guide recommendation. From the moment we stepped inside, we knew we were in for a treat. The dim sum tasting menu was an excellent choice to kickstart our meal. Offering a selection of 6 chicken, shrimp, pork, and beef dim sums, each bite was a burst of flavors that left us wanting more. It was a delightful dilemma trying to decide which dim sum was the best, as they were all exquisitely crafted. For the main course, we opted to share our dishes family-style, a decision we did not regret. The first dish, the lemon chicken, was perfectly cooked, and the lemony tang added a refreshing twist. The spare ribs with leeks, cumin, and sweet chili were an explosion of taste that left our taste buds dancing in delight. To complement the meats, we ordered roasted broccoli with ponzu sauce and macadamia nuts, a unique and flavorful side dish that perfectly balanced the meal. Additionally, we savored the nasi goreng, a delicious Indonesian fried rice that further expanded our gastronomic horizons. When it came to drinks, our waiter, Thomas, proved to be a gem. His recommendation of the Palomita was spot-on, offering a refreshing blend of tequila, lime, grapefruit soda, and tajin spice that perfectly complemented the meal. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his gimlet with 5 spices and lime, so much so that he ordered a second one. The attentiveness and knowledge displayed by Thomas were truly commendable and added an extra layer of enjoyment to our dining experience. Aside from the culinary delights, we also had the pleasure of interacting with the hostess, who was warm and welcoming. Her friendly demeanor set the tone for the rest of the evening, making us feel like valued guests throughout our visit. In summary, Ron Gastrobar Oriental Downtown proved to be a hidden gem in Amsterdam's culinary scene. The diverse and flavorful dishes showcased their chefs' talent and passion for creating authentic Asian flavors. The dim sum tasting menu was a standout, and the family-style sharing of main courses allowed us to savor multiple delights. The drinks were perfectly crafted to complement the food, and the service provided by Thomas and the hostess made our dining experience even more enjoyable. Without a doubt, we will be returning to Ron Gastrobar Oriental Downtown on our next trip to Amsterdam, eager to explore more of their exquisite offerings and enjoy the warm hospitality they provide. Whether you're a local or a tourist looking for an extraordinary dining experience, this restaurant is a must-visit destination for food lovers seeking a fusion of flavors from the East.

Great restaurant. Was recommended to us by a friend. The food was delicious (especially the shrimp curry) and service was fab. The only minor comment would be the music was a little too loud. We are in our early 30’s, but even for us we felt it was a little loud. Other than that, top marks.
