Room Mate Alicia, Plaza de Santa Ana, Madrid - Explore & Book

"The quirky philosophy of Room Mate is to infuse their hotels with the character of an imaginary personality. Here you meet the sophisticated Alicia, whose love of the ‘better things in life’ is reflected in every corner of this lofty building. It's a former woollens factory, once the only industrial building in central Madrid, now metamorphosed by interior design supremo Pascual Ortega. Stepping into the reception from leafy Plaza de Santa Ana, through sliding glass doors flanked by aluminium panels, you are greeted by a svelte, nude video figure that walks hypnotically towards you. Next you notice metallic torso sculptures, then an extraordinary stainless-steel staircase with flowing Art-Nouveau tendrils that point the way to your room. Ortega was given free rein and an open cheque book to create 34 spaces to sleep that leave the mundane a long way behind. The 2 Duplex Suites, complete with plunge pools and terraces overlooking the hip square (packed with bars and restaurants) just shout 'special celebration for 2'. Highs It's at the epicentre of young, bohemian Madrid, surrounded by the great bars and restaurants of the Las Letras district The city's main attractions (Thyssen museum, Reina Sofia museum, The Prado and Retiro Park) are all a stone's throw away The unique building looks great from within and without. At night the elegant glass-fronted upper storeys are lit in changing colours, adding a unique visual element Staff treat you as they would a friend, and are chosen according to how easily they slot into the Room Mate ‘way of being’ Every corner of the hotel is filled with weird and wonderful art; this is as far from chain-hotel standards as you can get Lows Plaza Santa Ana is undergoing construction work until 2026. The hotel is running as usual, but there may be some noise in the day, and you'll need to venture a little further for food and nightlife Bathrooms are either in-room or without doors, with glass showers; perhaps a hotel for couples rather than friends (though families are welcome, too) This part of Madrid rocks on into the early hours, and there’s usually some noise down in the square. Bring ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper There's no communal outdoor space The breakfast gets mixed feedback, but we have always enjoyed it" - Guy Hunter Watts

Room Mate Alicia | Best places to stay in Madrid

"Situated on Plaza Santa Ana, in the heart of Madrid’s restaurant and nightlife district, the Alicia is a hip boutique hotel where it’s virtually impossible not to have fun. Pascua Ortega, one of Spain’s most coveted interior designers, has turned an early 20th-century industrial building into a dramatic space that’s full of light and life, retaining many original features. The 34 rooms and suites contrast bold colours with pale wood, and many have large windows with views over the square. The excellent breakfast buffet is available until noon, and has good non-gluten and vegan options. If you want to join the late-night crowds, the friendly young staff offer great insider tips. It’s a stylish, affordable pad right in the buzzing heart of the city. " - Dana Facaros

Friendly helpful staff, we received a warm welcome, and the receptionist gave us lots of tips, how to get around! The room was a corner room was quite small but met our needs for a long weekend. Lots of storage space for luggage clothes, toilet and shower were small. The beds and pillows were so comfortable!!! The room was spotless clean, small mini bar. Good air-conditioning. We got the breakfast one morning, good value @€11 coffee juices breads pastries fruit, scrambled eggs bacon, cheeses. Again helpful staff.| |Hotel has a brilliant location easy to walk to Mayor Square, shopping, Palace etc.|Again check out was very efficient, helpful we stored bags and staff offered to organise a taxi. |Only recommendation- would try to make the internal courtyard look nicer a few plants tiles as we left the blind down when in the room, TV with wifi to get other channels. |Overall we really enjoyed our stay ☺️ and would highly recommend.

A clean, well equipped, well designed hotel room with helpful staff and in a great location. We loved our patio area! My only complaint, and it’s minor, is that the ironing board was a table top version and table space was at a minimum. I found it easier to sit on the floor to iron, which is not ideal. Still, this is a minor problem and doesn’t hinder my 5* review.

I spent a hot July week in a terrace suite on the 4th floor of Room Mate Alicia Hotel in Madrid. This prime location on Plaza Santa Ana should command a higher rate premium for a 3+ Star property, but rates were reasonable and competitive during my stay.||Alicia’s bright, modern atmosphere matches its unique exterior edifice that was once the subject of a local architecture contest. The owners and staff seem to take pride in the hotel’s status in Barrio de las Letras. Their excellent service reflects this.||Having a place between the Spanish Royal Palace (Palacio Real), the Prado Museum, and a few blocks from Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor made it easy to see major attractions and quickly refresh and cool down in my nearby hotel room. ||July is beyond hot and humid in Madrid; having the option to dart into my well-air conditioned room at Alicia’s between sites made me happy.||An inviting-looking sushi restaurant shares an entrance with the hotel, but I do not recommend it. My vegetable tempura looked and tasted like fish and chips fried in dark old oil. There are many better eateries to choose from just steps away in Santa Ana Plaza and everywhere else you walk.||The staff at Alicia are largely responsible for my extra star for this hotel. They went beyond my expectations by focusing on details. ||Pro:||• Excellent location between prado and palace|• Excellent staff and service|• Excellent air conditioning|• In-room coffee/tea/water service|• High value for the money|• Great terrace with hot/cold shower, lounge chairs and generous towel service.||Con:||• Only one elevator (small is common in Spain)|• Tiny toilet|• Neighboring windows look directly into your terrace—no privacy|• Rooms are insulated from noisy outside Plaza, which continues until sunrise, but not insulated from other rooms’ noises. (common in Spain)|• Stingy with tissues (3 tissues per room-see photo)|• No viewing hole in door (common in Spain)

A week at the hotel left the most pleasant impressions. Importantly, the hotel is located 10-15 minutes from the Prado, the Royal Palace, the amazing Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Royal Botanical Garden, etc. Breakfast - satisfied all our requests! There are many wonderful restaurants and an excellent wine cellar on the neighboring streets!)), and small grocery stores nearby helped us out when we wanted to end the evening with good wine, cheese and fruit! The attentive attitude of the staff to the guests is beyond praise! We had a difficult situation with tickets to museums (we simply forgot them at home), and at night the hotel administrator helped us restore all the tickets by printing them on a printer. The hotel is small, cozy, the room with windows overlooking the courtyard allows you to have a good night's rest. Quick taxi call, help with routes, the presence of a luggage storage room and the desire of the staff to help with any issue - all this added to our pleasant memories of Madrid.

Google
Great location for walking to many of the tourist sights, so the location is amazing! The square adjacent to the hotel (which normally would be a plus) is under construction leading to extra noise & congestion. The hotel should make note of this when booking. Rooms - we had a great room executive with terrace which gave us extra outdoor space. The weather was pretty rainy but nice to have fresh air when opening the doors. The terrace is large & only 10 euros extra per night so great value. Super comfortable beds, pillows. minibar, kettle, lots of storage, iron & board. Only negative is the bathroom setup. No privacy to room as no door, only for the toilet which is super small & squished so not great for large people. The design of the bathroom is poor & something to keep in mind. Breakfast - pretty decent variety. The hot foods weren't great but enough to start your day. Fresh fruit, yogurt, cold cuts, cheese, cereal, breads etc. Lobby - pretty small but adequate Staff - all were friendly and helpful when needed. Overall a great location, good hotel found it pricey but maybe Madrid is expensive. It's rated as a 3* which is accurate.

The location is perfect, centrally located near restaurants and shops and easy to venture out from. The room itself, particularly the cleanliness, was a disappointing experience. After checking in we discovered an ant infestation in the room appearing to come from the bathroom. We notified the front desk and while they did promptly notify maintenance- maintenance only came and sprinkled some powder. Unfortunately because of the ants in the bathroom, shower and carpet near the bed- we could not walk around without shoes on. Also made for uncomfortable showers with constantly looking for ants. They did not have a different room available to move us to. We also discovered a lack of proper cleaning as well- one of the coffee mugs had old coffee residue inside and had not been washed. One of the coffee spoons had mold crusted on the back. (Sadly after we had housekeeping come through the next day, we returned to find the SAME dirty spoon just rewrapped in a new napkin.) The staff did give us new coffee mugs but they were chipped on the top so we just opted to go out and BUY our own mugs for morning coffee. The staff were friendly but the number of issues the hotel had would keep us from ever returning. If we could’ve gotten a refund we would’ve checked right back out and stayed at another property. Sad to say that our last three nights were not comfortable at this hotel. We were not asked upon our check out how the stay was, another missed opportunity from a customer service perspective.

We had an amazing stay at Room mate Alicia in August 2025. Location is perfect! Mind that rooms are quite small, but the rest was perfectly fine.

Yelp
I've slept with all four of the Madrid Room Mates - Mario, Laura, Alicia, Oscar - and I've enjoyed them so much I don't see much of a reason to go anywhere else when I'm in the Spanish capital. Alicia is quite possibly the best of the Room Mates in Madrid - she's well located in the Santa Ana plaza (not far from the Barrio de las Letras), her rooms are nicely appointed and as I've come to expect with this hotel group: her wifi's free, her rates are affordable and her staff is helpful. Room Mate Alicia is an excellent bet for the savvy traveler in search of a boutique hotel at a budget price in the heart of Madrid.

Yelp
Looking for someone to sleep with in Madrid? Alicia (or her friends Oscar, Laura or Mario) are happy to oblige. And trust me, her price is right. Roommate Hotel Alicia really had it all. The location was fantastic right outside Plaza Santa Ana and a 5 minute walk from Plaza Mayor and Plaza Del Sol. The price was more than reasonable. The wifi was fast and free, as it should be. The staff was super friendly and helpful. And it must be said - there was one of the best music TV stations that payed everything from Brittney to Blind Melon to Beyonce to Blues Traveler. The mystery of what would be up next really added that cherry on top. Whether you're a baller on a budget or you only sleep in boutique beauties, Roomate Alicia won't disappoint.

Yelp
Room Mate Alicia is hot. Every bit as hot as the naked cartoon woman in the moving art in the lobby. Is that Alicia? I like her! The good: -Location -Location -Location -Stylish, cute -Very accommodating staff sweetly answered every question and gave us a nice late check out after a late night in Madrid. -View of square and street from my room. -Happily let us borrow boiling water device for room to make coffee. -Great value The (not so) bad: -Hated the floors in my room. Made of rubbery, plastic material. Cheap. -Not luxury by any stretch. Basic. -No privacy while showering, so be comfortable with your room mate! I'd stay here again anytime. I walked to the palace, shops, restaurants, clubs, bars, and Retiro Park. Another note on Madrid- it's a vibrant city, felt safe, full of beauties, and it really doesn't stay open ALL night unless at a discotheque. Everything else pretty much slows down around midnight.

Yelp
Found this place through a recommendation by the lovely Laura N. It isn't as fancy as the website would suggest but overall I was really happy with our stay. Fantastic location, really close to everything central. Simple reservation process online and they offered a deal including breakfast on the site. This was typically European breakfast fare, mostly breads, cheese and meat. Bit lacking in the fruit department but that seems symptomatic of the whole of Madrid. What was really welcomed was that they stayed serving up to noon, so you can sleep in, laze about and still get your brunch on. The room was a little smaller than you might like but really very adequate with a desk, twin beds and a decent sized shower. You could probably have gotten a few people in there with you. They also didn't tack on any bullshit extras, like paying for the safe or internet. Free wifi = happy Linzi!

Yelp
Awesome and contemporary hotel. I'm more of a traditional girl but this place is super trendy. B
