"The Spanish Room Mate group operates a number of reliable, design-focused, reasonably priced establishments around Europe and North America. Of the two locations in Barcelona, we like Room Mate Pau for its sleek, minimalist rooms, incredible rooftop view, and convenient location (just next to Plaça Catalunya)."

Yelp
Wonderful little hotel located next to Placa Catalunya. It does try to be a bit hip- but if you ignore that part it's actually a wonderful hotel. It's very safe, key card to enter lobby, key card to use the elevator, and front desk is always manned. (They can let you in, if you forget your key card.) The front desk is excellent and a special shout-out to Yao, Raquel, Marta, and Sahand! (More about the front desk later!) They will hold your luggage, if your room is not ready. The breakfast area is nice, spacious, and clean. The breakfast buffet is quite good for 10 to 12 euros, they keep it fresh until noon- no picking at leftover food if you come late- it's actually a very nice spread with hot food, cold cuts, pastry items, multiple types of juices, and fancy coffee machines. The food is quite high quality, I definitely recommend getting their breakfast buffet or at least going to take a look. The room did smell a bit musty, but was clean. I'm not a fan of how two beds are directly next to each other- I like space between the beds, but that's me. The bathroom is modern and clean, love the handheld shower head or rainfall shower head. Water pressure and temperature was excellent! I booked through Chase points for four nights, but only stayed two - because I became very ill in Barcelona and decided to return to the US immediately. The morning/day shift on both days were Yao and Raquel. They were wonderful during check-in, Yao and I had a very lively conversation in Mandarin where she explained the hotel and city to me. (First time in Europe.) I wish I got a chance to try some of her restaurant suggestions. Raquel was quite nice, but I didn't get to interact with her more until the next day. The next day, I was quite ill and kept asking Yao and Raquel questions- they offered to call a doctor to the hotel and try to find a pharmacy that was open on Sunday. After the doctor came and I was told I needed to be hospitalized- Raquel made the taxi reservation to take me to the hospital. Upon returning from the hospital, Sahand and Marta were on shift. I'm not sure if Yao and Raquel had left them a note or they saw me holding the hospital discharge papers, but they were both very kind and offering any type of support I may want. They offered tea, order service from a restaurant so I wouldn't need to go out again, etc etc. it was very nice, especially since I was still feeling so crummy. When I asked for a blanket, Marta immediately went upstairs to retrieve it for me. I told her I didn't need it immediately, but she waved me off and made sure I had it immediately. When my xrays dropped behind some furniture, Sahand came up and tried to retrieve them for me. It was behind some bolted furniture, but he definitely tried his best. All four of these front staff members were amazing. It's scary to be that sick in a foreign country, where you need to be hospitalized and not know the area, language, etc. Yao, Raquel, Marta and Sahand made a huge difference in helping me feel safe and supported. There might be nicer hotels near Placa Catalunya, but the genuine care shown by the staff is what causes me to recommend this hotel.

Yelp
Excellent place to stay! Very modern eco-friendly hotel! Very friendly and cheerful front office staff. We are having a wonderful stay here! The breakfast is wholesome, plentiful and awesome! Tamara and Pillar have been excellent hostesses! Very quick in replenishing food and tastefully prepared breakfast. Still here for a couple more days and would be back in a heartbeat!

Yelp
This is a modern hotel is very conveniently located as it's a one minute walk to placa Catalunya (where there's an official tourism office) and about 3 mins walk to La Rambla. It's between two metro stations Catalunya and Urquinaona (both are transfer stations to other lines). Also there's a larger grocery store in the basement of a department store on the corner. 15 min walk to the best tapas that are not tourist traps. Front desk - friendly and all speak pretty good English and were able to provide some good suggestions on random tourist questions. Safety - front door is locked at night and staff lets you in after they do the once over. Then it's always key card to get up to any floor. Area was safe as we walked all the time at all hours. Room - modern, clean. Spacious for European room. big semi-soft comfy bed with good sheets. A/C was excellent. Sink, toilet and shower all separated. MAJOR DOWNSIDE as another reviewer noted was the faux wood in the toilet room (wc) - it echoes like crazy!!! Every single noise you make is heard and amplified. I don't care how comfortable you are with someone - no one wants to hear all that. Shower was excellent with great temperatures and pressure. Cleanliness - pretty clean though vacuuming wasn't done daily. Biggest downsides - very noisy (traffic and and people) as we faced carrer de fontenella and I don't think they have good windows to insulate that sound. And the echoing washroom. Best parts - convenient location, nice staff, clean room. Would I stay here again? Probably not and it's because of the two downsides. If you're ok with that then it's a great place. By the way, no pool and floor 1 has an outdoor terrace and breakfast area.

Yelp
Excellent hotel. Great location!! Walking distance to La Rambla and many stores and restaurants. The rooms are clean. I would definitely stay here again when we go back to Barcelona.

Yelp
Perfect location, modern hotel. Upgrade to an executive room for €10 per night. Try opening and closing the window... talk about sound proof!! a few cosmetic things need improvement like the light slightly falling out of the table at the end of the bed. But in the main, the only downside to the hotel was flushing the toilet in the night... it sounds like a tornado!

Yelp
I had a very weird experience here -- I think the hotel is trying too hard to be hip and fails at actually being relaxing accommodation. Check in was ok -- staff was friendly, but we got really pushed to donate some euros for something that the front desk guy couldn't explain. First strike. The room itself was interesting -- there was a not-sure-if-real Eames shell chair, and the toilet and shower were separated. We quickly realized they were very loud, thanks to the hard faux wood tile that reflected sound. Awkward if you're not with someone you're comfortable with... Also, the room controls took forever to figure out and the Internet radio panel built into the wall never worked. We came home one night after hours and nobody was stationed at the front desk -- we couldn't get in until the dude came downstairs. The worst part was there wasn't a key card override. The hotel looks hip but needs some help, I suspect. Great location though.

Yelp
This was a fun, clean and modern hotel close to the city center and priced very affordably. The front desk staff was more helpful than any other I've ever encountered at any other hotel and they supply you with a free wifi device to give your phone access if you are from a different country and don't have an international plan - example: me. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Yelp
A modern hotel conveniently located to placa Catalunya. The check-in was easy and straightforward. English was a comfortable language and suggestions were appreciated for various activities and dining possibilities. In the evening, the lobby is guarded by an independent security agency. This was a positive and provided a feeling of well being. The room was modern and fairly clean. I was impressed with the size of the room, the reasonably comfortable bed and storage area. Another positive was that the toilet and shower were in separate areas, but the vanity mirror was outside facing (near) the bed. Not the best for privacy. One major issue was the fake wood in the water closet. The echoing was just too much. I am not sure much can be done about this issue. On the flip side, the shower pressure was excellent with solid temperatures. On a side note, try to request a room that isn't facing carrer de fontenella. The noise from the street was unbearable. Finally, compliments to the hotel for their excellent Level 1 breakfast and seating room area. I found that area to be comfortable, clean and serving a solid "quick" breakfast. Enjoy!
