18 Places to Discover Innovation in Roosevelt Island and NYC

"Despite its close proximity to both Manhattan and Queens, getting to and from Roosevelt Island has always been something of a challenge. Before the trolley that once ran across the Queensboro Bridge starting in 1909, the only access was by boat. When that trolley stopped running in 1957, the little community was once again all but cut off from Manhattan, with only a newly-opened bridge connecting it to Queens. In the 1970s, the island began being developed for residential use (for years, it was known as “Welfare Island” for its hospitals and asylums), and the addition of a subway stop was planned. But as the population of the island continued to grow, construction of the subway station became mired in delays and it was decided that something needed to be done, and quickly. Enter the aerial tramway: flying in from Manhattan at 250 feet above the East River, the tram began operation in 1976. Although it was really intended as a “temporary” solution until the subway connection could be completed, it still connects Manhattan to Roosevelt Island today, even after the subway station finally opened in 1989. For a decade, it was the only commuter service aerial tramway in the country (a second was built in Portland, Oregon, in 2006). The aging system was overhauled in 2010, and now runs new cars on a regular daily schedule." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

30 Unexpected Places to Have a Joyful Adventure in New York City

The tramway has an excellent view over the Hudson River while crossing to and from Roosevelt Island. It’s cost is that of a normal train ride $2.90 or free with an unlimited MetroCard. It’s filled to full capacity before crossing. The trip is quite high but also very short, just under five minutes. The tram runs every 7-15 minutes from 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan to Tramway Plaza on Roosevelt Island.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway offers a transport experience unlike any other in New York City, providing an aerial gateway between Manhattan and the quietude of Roosevelt Island. As you embark from the Island station, the tram carriages ascend, offering passengers a panoramic embrace of the city’s skyline. Suspended high above the East River, the tramway is a momentary voyage into serenity, a scenic reprieve from the urban sprawl. It’s a unique vantage point, where the city’s pulse is both visible and distant, framed by the vast architectural marvels piercing the horizon. Roosevelt Island itself, a slender thread in the tapestry of New York City, presents a peaceful contrast to the clamor of Manhattan, with green spaces and promenades that offer residents and visitors alike a quieter, more contemplative way of life. The tramway is not just a utility but an experience, an aerial dance over the waters, tethering the bustle of Manhattan to the calm of Roosevelt Island, reminding us that the city is both a place of relentless energy and unexpected pockets of tranquility.

We decided to go in the evening and it was the best choice! The view is breathtaking both from the street on the Island and from the tramway! It is not needed an additional ticket you can use the MetroCard without any problem. Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the Island. It is really worth it, even just crossing and coming back.

Awesome way to get off the island over to Manhattan. It drops you off at 2nd Ave and 59th/60th. If you walk along 60th, it will take you right up to Central Park. You can purchase a ticket at the kiosk. There are heaters which are nice on cold days or evenings. Nice alternative way of transportation. We enjoyed the beautiful views of the city as well.

One of the best (free) things to do when visiting! I highly recommend everyone to take a ride with the Roosevelt Island Tramway. The view is stunningly beautiful-I really didn’t expect it to be so awesome. And the ride is included in the regular MTA metro ticket!! It’s a fun 5-7 minutes trip and great for taking pictures 🙌🏻

Do yourself a favor and visit Roosevelt Island. The tram works really well. The ride is no more than 5-7 minutes. With your Metro Card the ride is free of charge. When you get to the Island there is a small tourist guide place with a very friendly lady telling you about the sights on the Island. Definitely worth a visit. A great place to relax for a few hours away for the busy streets of Manhattan.

This is something cute to do with the family. The fare is $2.90 each way (you will need a metro card, but can get one once you get to the top). You have to get off at the end. The ride is maybe 5-6mins and the views are amazing! It is crowded. It’s def worth going. It seemed to be a park at the end. We did not explore other activities due to a time crunch. The line is long, but it moves fast.

Google
Nice experience over all. The drive is included in the metro card so if you have time to go from the east side to the roosevelt island try to make it happen. The parks of the island are nice and with nice weather this activity clams you down from the rush in the city
