Ann Arbor’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Detroit

"John Roos is a legendary local roaster whose approach mirrors the ethos of Ann Arbor itself — organic, homegrown, and often whimsical. From the eclectic decor to the oddball names for the beans, the owner’s personality comes through in all areas of the coffee shop. Stop by on the first Friday of every month for the breakfast burritos." - John Reyes

Dang this coffee shop is amazing. You must have patience to come here as there is literally a line to get your daily Java, and even though there's an abundance of street parking and a small parking lot, you'll have to drive way down the road to find parking with luck. Amazing quality coffee. My honey vanilla latte was perfectly made. Perfect milk texture, great espresso and house made syrups (hazelnut, vanilla, mocha, and caramel, in addition to honey). The cups they have are so cute, both for here and to go. Also got their single origin Columbian drip, it was awesome. The whole shop atmosphere is pretty chill. I recommend coming here. I also got their cheesy potato breakfast burrito, very good, the green sauce is great with it.

Google
We ordered a hot latte, cold latte, burrito with sausage and a bacon scone. The drinks were great. The scone would have been better heated up, but they didn't offer it. The burrito was made from scratch, but I didn't love the red sauce inside of it. I love having a neighborhood coffee shop.

Google
A fantastic coffee shop with spacious green patio at their Rosewood location, it's beautiful and relaxing. A favorite spot! Our dog loved going there too!

Google
RoosRoast Coffee at Rosewood is an absolute gem. The coffee is top-notch, consistently rich and flavorful, whether you’re sipping an espresso or enjoying a cold brew. The staff are friendly and welcoming, always making you feel at home. The patio is a great spot to relax, perfect for sunny mornings or cozy afternoons. Inside, there are cool nooks and creative decor, making it feel both vibrant and laid-back. It’s a great place to bring a book or your laptop and settle in for a while. The overall atmosphere is inviting and fun. Definitely a spot I’d recommend to any coffee lover! The Journal book Idea is such an awesome idea, brought a smile when I read some pages.

Google
Tied for best coffee within an hour and a half from my house, Roos really delivers! When I order a Latte and take in some of that artistic foam off the top, without taking a sip, I can tell this coffee is full-bodied, bold and delicious! This is exactly what I expect from my drink. I don’t know how many times (or places) I have ordered a plain Latte and it tastes mostly like warm milk and thin. I know ratio wise that it is mostly milk, but with exceptional coffee (espresso), it doesn’t have to taste like something that was left out for Santa. Excellent job! Would recommend and will return.

Google
Outside seating is great and they have a lot of room. Even though they were packed the day I went the service was quick and friendly. I had a mocha and two eggies (quiche like egg bites) which were great!

Google
The coffee here is so good! I had the lavender latte with oat milk. They have other alternative milk options as well. The roast is delicious and even their vegan bakery items are moist and perfected. We also tried the hot cocoa and a latte with oat milk and honey. They have banana bread and cookies and other assortment of goods/foods. There's plenty of outdoor seating, so on a nice day you can enjoy the shade and the sun. It's perfect for families. And there's plenty of parking on the street and behind the building.

Google
I loved the outdoors with flowers and the picnic benches giving a very laid back and relaxing vibe. We got an iced Vietnamese coffee and a hot mocha. Both drinks were great! The staff was very sweet as they entertained us even if we showed up when the shop was about to close in 10min(we were the last ones to place our order) but they did not make us feel so. The apple trees and extra seating on the side is nice but the apples are all infested and it would be ideal if it was taken care of but it was a good experience. I loved the old Remington typewriter they have kept next to the wait line, reminding us of simpler times.

Yelp
Now this is what coffee should always taste like. I was told the honey vanilla latte was their most popular drink and it did not disappoint. It wasn't too sweet and I tasted both the honey and the vanilla but still knew I was drinking coffee. It's a very hipster spot, but hipsters seem to make amazing coffee so carry on, please. The service was attentive and fast, and they seemed to have an awesome system in place to keep it moving smooth. The place just looked cool and made you wanna sit down for a little bit. I'm not in Ann Arbor very often, but when I'm back I will definitely stop by again.

Yelp
First of all I recently realized there are two places in Ann Arbor! This one was good parking and great outdoor spot to study or read! Coffee: Let's get real here - RoosRoast knows their beans. Like, they're on a whole other level of coffee. And don't even get me started on their signature Lobster Butter!! So good and great gift Service: The crew at RoosRoast? They are very friendly and they give samples if they have a fresh batch ready. I like the cute card stock in the front! They will package gift items and if you need the beans grinded they offer that service! Ambience: Step into RoosRoast, and you'll instantly feel those cozy coffee shop vibes. It's like your favorite neighborhood hangout, but with way better coffee. Whether you're posted up with your laptop or catching up with friends, the chill atmosphere here is top-notch.

Yelp
Individual building, with street and lot parking. Lots of outdoor seating. Limited in door seating. I ordered a "fancy". Honey vanilla latte and brought my own cup, and it was really quite delicious. Fast service. Friendly. Overall a nice quick stop .

Yelp
We stopped here on our way to Detroit. Nice vibe and great selection of coffee. However the staff member was really cold and left us hanging for a while and had nothing to say when we asked about the menu recommendation. We ended up with burrito for breakfast and it was good but a bit pricey given there isn't much special about it.
google avatar

Pam H.

Yelp
What an adorable coffee shop just outside of the University of Michigan's campus. The interior was fun and funky but had very limited seating so it wouldn't be a place I'd go to work, however there is plenty of outdoor seating so on a nice day it would be great for hanging out with friends. The coffee was delicious- strong and full-flavored.

Yelp
Love Roos Roast! And having one within walking distance is the best. They have a vegetarian and vegan breakfast burrito available which is what we usually get. Plus their oat milk lattes are the best. My nephew likes their hot chocolate a lot! Nicest people and a cozy space with ample seating outside!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was super cute, super fast and super delicious. We stopped in for a coffee to enjoy outside (amazing weather, finally) and I was really pleasantly surprised by the selection. Everyone was friendly, they were patient while we figured out what we wanted and it was just a cool spot. Of course they had great milk alternatives (yay!) and I think we were all really happy with our choices!

Best Coffee in Ann Arbor Friendly service, wonderful seating outdoors, limited seating indoor

Yelp
I recently had a chance of revisiting RoosRoast coffee, and I am satisfied that the coffee is just as fantastic as I remember it years ago. From the moment you walk in the door, the aroma of freshly roasted beans greets you and sets the tone for a wonderful coffee experience. As usual, I tried their signature Lobster Butter Love blend, which is a mix of light and dark roasts that results in a smooth, rich flavor with just the right amount of boldness. The coffee was expertly brewed and served piping hot, allowing me to fully appreciate the nuanced flavors and complex notes. It's clear that the folks at RoosRoast take their coffee seriously and put a lot of care and attention into every cup. One thing that really stood out to me during my visit was the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They were happy to answer any questions I had about the coffee and the brewing process, and they made me feel right at home. It's clear that they are passionate about what they do, and it shows in the quality of their coffee and the overall experience. Overall, I would highly recommend RoosRoast coffee to anyone looking for a truly exceptional cup of coffee. Whether you're a die-hard coffee lover or just looking to try something new, RoosRoast is definitely worth a visit. With their expertly roasted beans, skilled baristas, and welcoming atmosphere, it's no wonder that they've become a beloved fixture in the local coffee scene.

Yelp
The coffee- absolutely a better brew due to freshly roasted. If I lived in the area I would stop by daily for a Honey Vanilla Latte. The best! Sadly, I live far away. Took home 2 bags of the Lobster Butter Love as a consolation prize. The service was friendly and helpful. The ambience was eclectic fun inside and out. A must visit when in Ann Arbor. Go Blue!

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. I ended up buying a bunch of Christmas gifts here this year. It was great to be able to walk in and get gift boxed items for many of my friends in one place. I even managed to get help getting it all to my car. I'll definitely get gifts here again!!
google avatar

Cayla R.

Yelp
Friendliest group of people that we encountered during our brief time in Ann Arbor. Loved that they offered gluten free food choices (protein balls, egg bites). I was too cold to appreciate the outdoor seating but it's a cute spot! The jalapeño sauce was so yummy!

Cheyenne M.

Yelp
Love Roos! First time trying the chai and it wasn't my favorite. Very strong clove notes, but their other drinks are more my taste and this location has a great outdoor area with plenty of shade.
google avatar

Yelp
Great neighborhood coffee shop in Ann Arbor. Coffee was fantastic. Only drawback is that the inside seating area is very small so not always great for a casual meeting

Yelp
RoosRoast Coffee hit the spot I needed for a wonderful roasted brewed awakening! There are three locations around the Ann Arbor area, we ended up at the Industrial Hwy location; easy parking, tables inside & outside, and all the coffee & tea swag of your hearts desire. There is an array of morning pastries if you need something more than liquid breakfast. The vibe is inviting & the baristas are helpful and very friendly. I read about the Lobster Butter coffee. It totally lived up to it's name! The Lobster Butter is a Medium to Dark roast with a thick buttery finish- and the crema head atop of my French press is one of the best I've had in years. Their roast is absolutely amazing. They have it down. I'm glad I grabbed a bag of whole bean to go. I've had it every morning since our wonderful visit to Roos! Give RoosRoast Coffee a try- you will be hooked on this bean!

Yelp
Pretty dope and unique vibe with very helpful staff. The lobster butter coffee pulled shot I got was very rich and buttery. Overall great coffee.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of the RoosRoast downtown for great quality coffee. Since moving off Packard, I didn't realize they had a second location on Rosewood that I could bike or walk to! Plenty of times I've walked here with my dogs and enjoyed something delicious while sitting outside. This particular location does not have indoor seating (just a small nook off to the side while you wait for your order) but they have plenty of outdoor seating (picnic benches, tables with chairs, covered seating). They even have water bowls for your pup! The service here is always friendly, my order is always perfect, and it's just a wonderful neighborhood spot that I'm lucky to live near!
google avatar

Yelp
Good quality coffee. I got an iced caramel latte with oat milk. The flavor was good and smooth. I love that they have breakfast options. I got the cheesy potato burrito that had eggs and it was pretty good. They have limited seating inside but plenty of tables outside. They have parking in the back.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my wife's top rated coffee experience of our recent vacation. She says that the coffee is "bold, smooth, and flavorful". "The menu is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is fun."
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
I really do love this charming neighborhood coffee spot. They are doing the best they can in spite of this dreadfully prolonged pandemic. And their flavored seasonal lattes are delightful. Not only are the flavors spot on and well balanced, but there is evident care in the construction of drinks. How do I know? Because despite selling their coffee in paper cups with to-go lids affixed securely to their tops, the RoosRoast baristas continue to crown their glossy micro foam with well executed latte art designs. Seriously. Open up your lids people and enjoy drinking these drinks the way they were intended to be consumed. A little part dies inside me when I see someone drinking a latte through the small plastic hole in a to go lid. But not everything is great. I do wish the food options were a little better. Plus, their signature drink... the long pull? Not a fan. It's a real head scratcher to me how a place that can do such good things with espresso can also put that concoction front and center. My thought is that it harkens back to some bygone era? At least that is my best guess. If my expectations for great coffee shops weren't so high, RoosRoast would totally get full marks. I have come to learn what to order to have a great experience, but there is room for improvement. However, I don't see that happening as this is an Ann Arbor institution that has built up some strong loyalty over time. They would be foolish to change. It would definitely be five stars if my point of comparison were the big chains. But I have seen the coffee apex, and while I do love visiting RoosRoast, it's not quite there.

Yelp
I had to stop by RoosRoast while I was in town to grab a bag of the "Holiday Blend Coffee" because I missed it last year! Luckily, they offered 1/2 pound bags for $8 each. My friend who lives in the area loves their "Honey Vanilla Latte", and I trust his opinion so I knew I had to try it. I usually get the "Hot Chocolate Cold Brew" or the straight up, but wanted to try something new. Overall, it's a solid drink (12 oz for $4.50). It's a good mix of honey and vanilla. I personally don't love it as much as my friend (prefer honey and cinnamon, tbh) but I know many people come to RoosRoast for this drink. I'd still recommend it to people if they are looking for a latte recommendation. Friendly baristas and great coffee shop. RoosRoast is by far my favorite coffee shop in Michigan. Good drinks, quirky vibes, and AMAZING beans. I love the coffee here. Definitely check out their Liberty location if you're closer to downtown!

Yelp
Good service nice sitting area outside social distancing. Street parking in front and parking in the rear. The area is very quiet. They have umbrellas to for the sun. They have a couple of trees for the shades. I took hot chocolate, it was not as strong as the dark hot chocolate I ask at Caribou, but it was good. Services quick. They use solar energy on the roof. Many people came with the dogs and sat outside. Some humans also came with their human kids: they also sat outside. Positive vibes and funny pictures and writings as well as informative chalk writing on the walls all around inside as well as outside. NB: The neighborhood is so quiet, that sitting outside having my coffee I did not dare to fart because people around me would hear me despite the social distancing.

Yelp
Once I tried Lobster Butter, I could not drink most other coffees as they taste burned. I buy it in 5 pound bags, ground to order. The place has a lot of character. I always get Ancho Pancho (spicy chocolate coffee drink), prepared iced or warm, or caffeinated or not, depending on the time of day and year. They have several other types of coffee besides LB, often including several single grower varieties.
google avatar

Bronwyn E.

Yelp
Great super friendly coffee shop. Love their matcha it's high quality and made with love. They have some great pastry and food options too! The only drawback is it is soooo busy especially in the mornings. It would be wonderful if the could improve the people traffic flow
google avatar

Yelp
Nice cafe. Had an excellent cappuccino dry with oat milk and a breakfast burrito that was also delicious. They have a nice outdoor seating area that's spacious and comfortable and you can tell the company makes an effort in sustainability. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Happy service. GF/vegan options. Solar-operated. Playful, funky vibe. Tons of outdoor seating. And yes. My large oat latte was delish. Recommend.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee places in town. The lobster butter blend is just *chef's kiss.* I'm very picky about my coffee not being too "bright" and acidic or dark and burnt. The lobster butter is a perfectly smooth and medium roast blend, and even smoother when brewed long pull (extra 50 cents) instead of the normal drip. There was also a seasonal salted maple latte offered that peaked my interest. I'm looking forward to trying this on my next visit in the near future. While the building itself was small, service was speedy and there is an expansive outdoor patio in front of the coffee shop for folks to enjoy their beverages and snacks at with their company. They don't allow dogs inside due to health code, but dogs are allowed to be outside in their patio area. Can I also just say how adorable the compostable to-go coffee cups and sleeves are?! I admire Roosroast's pro-sustainability efforts - one of my favorite local Ann Arbor businesses for sure!

Yelp
This place is awesome! Crazy full & busy when I visited but I so preferred over my last visit to Starbucks. The person who took my order was friendly, chatted with me, patiently took my order, cheerfully agreed to substitute cows milk with oatmilk, and offered me a PAPER loyalty punch card good fora free drink after I purchase10. Location is cozy colorful and artsy. Gorgeous grove of colorful flowers out front. Parking in back & on street. Expect to wait during rush hour. Small concern: there were a few flies budding around.

Yelp
Roos roast rocks my world in coffee. I enjoy who is roast but something about who is roast is I love hate relationship and I have find that most places I've been to for coffee I've seen the good weather and best. so does it pass my test I think for coffee drinkers are starting up to drink coffee this is a great place to go to to get the lobster butter love. I can say this is very attractive to College students who don't know anything about coffee people just think coffee is something to keep them warm but really it's like wine. for me this was a great place when I was around Ann Arbor. I found other places to be great in Ann Arbor. I have a score to say like with who is roast it's Middle Road. I mean the place is really cool I haven't been in awhile but I'd like to check it out again.

Dustin C.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I ordered a Carmel mocha. When I left and started to drink it. There was no coffee. It was just a hot chocolate. Which wasn't very flavorful. My drink was basically steam milk with a hint of chocolate!
google avatar

Isabella T.

Yelp
They have yummy vegan options! Today I had a tofu scramble burrito & chocolate muffin
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
One of my favorite things about traveling is finding independent coffee roasters and shops. Their set-up is simple: one door in another door out, picnic tables on the yard if you want to sit. Looks like the line frequently extends outside but they keep it moving. I ordered one of my usuals, dirty chai, and was really pleased when they asked if I wanted it sweetened, as chai in a lot of places means syrup or presweetened mix that is sweeter than I prefer. Customization is my favorite thing! I also bought a bag of Lobster Butter to take home and just made a pour-over that is delicious. I was at first put off because the heavenly scent of the beans wasn't very strong once brewed, but the cup is wonderful, dark and buttery. Also, I might have been imagining it but I think we could smell the roasting beans from the front yard!
google avatar

Andria M.

Yelp
service was okay, but nothing great. i don't usually write reviews but honestly the coffee sucked pretty bad and we came here specifically because all the reviews were really good. the coffee tasted super light or watery. I could honestly barely taste the coffee or any amount of sweetness. it was just watery and milky. idk not a fan.

Sean A.

Yelp
Really good coffee, fast service, and lovely staff. Recommend to anyone visiting or living in Ann Arbor.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Love the Lobster Butter . Once you go lobster butter there is no going back. Love the environmental sustainable business process.

Yelp
We frequent Roosroast for the great coffee, incredible breakfast burritos, and honorable mission by using solar power to roast beans! Every time we go to the store we've loved our coffee, however the last 2 bags of beans we brought home have not been up to par. Hopefully just a bad batch as prior bags have been great.

Yelp
I can't recommend RoosRoast enough! This place felt really special, it has tons of character and the coffee itself is fantastic. To drink, we had the iced honey vanilla latte, iced cortado, and ancho mocha latte which were all perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. We ordered everything iced which was perfect for a hot summer day. I also got the egg, ham, and kale breakfast sandwich which far exceeded my expectations. I knew their coffee was a reliable local choice, but I wasn't expecting the food to be so delicious too. It was fresh and tasty--also!! There are not enough words in the dictionary to go on about how great their green sauce is! It's a standard tomatillo recipe on the same level quality of sauces I've had in Mexico. I even asked if they bottled it but sadly they don't (yet...). Combined with the sandwich, it made it an incredible experience. We left with a bag of the lobster butter beans and we've brewed them up in our coffee maker at home, it's a great, robust coffee flavor for everyday. 5/5 for the food and drinks 5/5 for the atmosphere 5/5 for the staff..so nice, helpful, personable, and accommodating. TIP THEM. Thank you Roos for great morning and meal!

Alanna G.

Yelp
Not only do I love going but I only drink roosroast at home as well. It's the best coffee I have had the pleasure of drinking. Y'all need to start making shirts for merch if you don't

Yelp
I really love their coffee, friendly staff, and ambiance! This location is super convenient for me and I consider it my "neighborhood coffee shop". If ever I don't make it in to work physically, odds are I'm working from RoosRoast. I would describe the atmosphere as eclectic-y but friendly and calm. There's a cool mix of people - students and young professionals working, older folks coming in for some coffee and conversation, or people just coming in to read and relax. I also saw a knitting club with older women here and it was the cutest thing ever. It's also nice to sit out front (weather permitting) and enjoy a nice ice latte.

Meghan S.

Yelp
Peas and carrots???? I love love love Roos roast! I love everything about them - the coffee is outstanding, the tea is incredible, the people who work there are kind and fun and beautiful! The food is delicious with super fresh ingredients. This would've been a solid five star review EXCEPT recently something very strange happened, after 3 rounds of the most delicious egg bites with fresh ingredients I've ever eaten, roos roast came out with these peas and carrots egg bites. To their absolute credit they created edible peas and carrots egg bites but only because I cover them with their amazing salsa! The carrots in the egg bites are perfectly square as well which makes me believe they may be frozen peas and carrots! Roos roast - I love you! But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE discontinue the peas and carrots egg bites. I feel they may be tarnishing your otherwise flawless reviews!!!!

Yelp
Roos is one of those places that just does it right. Every time I pass by the Rosewood location there is a good number of people hanging outside, safely distanced, and there's no question why. Roos Roast always has the friendliest staff, excellent food and beverage, packaged coffee and merch, and I really appreciate the way this location has laid out their Covid safety precautions. There is clear signage for where to go and stand and be well-distanced, a little station to fix up your coffee or get a straw -- with hand sanitizer provided -- and the staff are so friendly and helpful (behind their masks). I also had a very positive online order transaction -- the website selection and pickup was super easy, as there is clear signage for where to go for pickup orders. We always have Roos Roast coffee in the house (Lobster Butter Love is a staple) and I've always loved their house-made chai which you can have them sweeten as much or as little as you like (the pre-made mixed are always too sweet!). And I've lost count of how many times I've stopped by the Liberty Street location for a Roos Rice Bowl with a dippy egg. Man, I miss stopping there on my lunch breaks. One day when I'm not working from home I will be a frequent customer again!

Yelp
We were in town for a wedding during Hallo(ween) weekend, and decided to check out the downtown between festivities. Decided to try this cute coffee shop after another guests recommendation. We loved that the barista made the Halloween themed latte art! Very festive and creative! Not to mention really great quality coffee beverages. We took some back for family, you made a few Europeans very happy with some great coffee. My boyfriend also got the Roos specialty sandwich which he just raved about. Can't wait to explore Michigan again soon and enjoy another cup of deliciousness!

Rose A.

Yelp
I tried this place after living here for years, and my only regret is not going here sooner! Very good coffee, cool atmosphere, and friendly staff. Love to support a local owned business as well.

Yelp
Nice little local coffee shop with some unique menu items. My wife had a spicy latte and really enjoyed it. My iced cold brew was strong but not bitter which I enjoyed very much.
google avatar

Yelp
Super high quality coffee and an adorably friendly and helpful staff -- this place rocks!

Yelp
Great coffee and breakfast burritos. Friendly staff. Not much in the way of seating, but that didn't matter, we chatted with our table mates.
google avatar

Yelp
RoosRoast is the cutest local coffee shop in A2! They have been so diligent with covid safety and I have never met a friendlier staff! They have many options for coffee and teas as well as take home bags of grounds!

Liza T.

Yelp
The perfect locally crafted place to sit and caffeinate. Eclectic milieu and varied music. Friendly baristas.

Yelp
Let me just say that the Portland dark roast coffee is hands down, one of the best tasting coffees that I've ever had. If you love full bodied dark, rich coffee, you need to try this! It's full flavor is dark without any bitterness, which is what I love. All their coffees are good but this Portland dark roast is a dream come true! And the biggest bonus, it's organic!!! The folks who work are all so friendly and fabulous, always smiling and very welcoming. I give them 10 stars

Susan W.

Yelp
I went to their shop near S Industrial to be able to sample some of their flavors before buying bags of coffee as gifts. I enjoy Lobster Butter but I don't know their other flavors. I have a family member that won't drink burnt coffee and we've thrown bags of other brands into compost. Anyway I couldn't get any samples. The barista informed me she'd have to make a "whole cup" and sounded totally put out. So I just left with a couple bags of Lobster Butter.
