"Two new restaurants have opened inside the Valley Fair shopping center: A new location of SF-based Thai chicken mini-chain Rooster & Rice, and another outpost of Portland-based sustainable sushi restaurant Bamboo Sushi, the Bay Area News Group reports. Both are open daily for outdoor dining and takeout." - Eve Batey

The store doesn’t have many people yet we waited 15 minutes for our food. I ordered chicken with skin but it came with no skin. I requested for a new one with skin, they only gave me a few pieces of skin on top. Do you understand that there is a vast difference in the taste of chicken with skin and chicken with no skin? I will never ever come back!

Google
The only reason why this shop is still operational is because of the endless line right next door at Ramen Nagi. Stumbled upon this joint cause we didn't want to wait next door. The food is just a boiled chicken meat on top of a bed of rice with some sauce. Doesn't even taste that good. I'm not sure what "cooking" was involved. A simple salad with chicken breast would fare better.

Google
Food was expensive and not too great. Popcorn chicken lacked flavors and not tender enough. Scanty quantity. Napkins were nowhere in sight and you had to ask for it and they were cheap in providing, making you wonder why you pay tips to begin with when service sucks. Very cramped space, uncomfortable to sit. Apathetic worker. Overall depressing vibe...

Google
In A Nutshell: -Rooster & Rice is definitely some good Asian comfort food. -This location inside Valley Fair Mall is open, but takeout only. -You can grab your food & take it outside to eat. -The panko chicken was pretty good. -The red sauce is semi-spicy & tastes great. -The chicken flavored jasmine rice is delish. Overall, this is a great place to refuel while you shop.

Google
The food was surprisingly light but filling, it's nice to have a non-fried menu staple! The chicken was moist and tender. But the best part of the meal was the amazing chicken rice, I couldn't get enough!

Google
The food is great love something simple. But the guy that work as the cashier good damn does it hurt to smile a little? Feel like talking to robot or wall

Google
Fried chicken and service was excellent. However, the plastic fork melts and breaks very easily leaving fragments in the food.

Google
Located in the Valley Fair mall, next to Ramen Nagi and all the other new food places that recently popped up. I was thinking to get some ramen but the line was too long :) I ordered the #1 with chicken thigh upgrade ($1 extra). Food came out pretty quickly, and it was good. The sauce was delicious, chicken was prepared well, and reasonable portion size. I wish they have an option to order without skin (like Chicken Meets Rice does), but it's just minor inconvenience. With the number of food offerings available in the mall now, it's hard to say if I would come back. Definitely a solid option though!

Yelp
Went here because the neighboring food inside the mall were quite busy. Ordered on an iPad, the food took a little while to come out even though there were only 1-2 other customers. I think this is tastier than I expected. Hat Yai Thai Fried Chicken was good. I wish there were cucumbers or greens of some sort to balance out the heartiness. The Khao Tom Gai soup was pretty salty. Would be good for when youre sick and can't taste much haha! Overall I enjoyed it and thought the pricing was fair for what it is.

Ana L.

Yelp
I really love rooster and rice but for some reason, every time I ask for no skin or any sort of modifications, it seems to be ignored or taken very lightly. This time I asked for no skin for one order and both our orders came with skin. We also asked for extra cilantro but the amount looks the same in both. This is probably the 5th time this has happened and not just for this location but all their other ones. Also not sure why the sauces are different. One is the soybean sauce that it usually comes with and the other one is the traditional ginger oil sauce. I love the food but just disappointed with the service and lack of quality with prepping it to our customizations.

Josephine F.

Yelp
Yum! It's no Portland's Nong's Khao Man Gai, but it will do to satisfy the craving when you are in the Bay Area. I always order the classic #1, and it's good. Comes with a little cup of broth that is flavorful and adds a nice side to the chicken and rice. Most importantly, the dipping sauce is good. I've gotten "chicken and rice" at other restaurants in the Bay Area, but the sauce has never tasted right/close to Nong's. The sauce here has the right flavor --tangy and tart with the right seasonings. It really makes the dish. I've been here multiple times, and I'll continue coming when I'm looking to get my chicken and rice fix.

Jordan D.

Yelp
Decent chicken joint, was expecting more and the service took very long. Sandwich was ok and fries were okay. Nothing out of the ordinary and for a spot like this it really disappointed me. This area of valleyfair has excellent food and trying this was a let down. There was also no lady at the front to take our order and we had to order off the kiosk.

Annie K.

Yelp
I enjoyed my classic order here if the #1 hainan chicken, comes with plenty if chicken and rice, just wish they gave more sauce bc one wasnt enough. I got the savory garlic one and bf got the sweet chili so had some of his. He got the fried one and didnt look like as much meat but looked crispy which he likes.

Kartika H.

Yelp
first time trying at this place or station but i am actually a fan of rooster & rice. will say staff that night was meh!!! no smile and seemed like he wanted to close as soon as possible while still ten more minutes. order hat yai thai fried chicken and the original with all thigh for to go. i paid extra for asking all thigh. lucky that i check my order: yes, i got all white meats. when asking why white meats, he said no more thigh. he proposed me to get vegetables because could not return the money. i asked soup instead but then soup is not hot at all, not even warm. not sure why - so disappointing!!!

Eunhee J.

Yelp
we come here very often since it is easy for my kid to eat tasty food as always the original is the best

Mai S.

Yelp
Came here for quick lunch. The food is generally good but soup (chicken broth) was too salty and portion was smaller than I thought. I wished they would give more veggies (have to pay extra for it..) I ordered mixed of chicken breast and thigh, thigh was tender and good but breast was too dry. The sauce was tasty with ginger & garlic soy flavor. Chicken rice was what I liked the best from this place, but again portion is small. You order using tablet and it's all self service. Came on weekday lunch so had plenty of seating too. If you need quick lunch without any wait could be good option.

Alex J.

Yelp
3.5 stars I was always a big fan of rooster & rice (so much so, that I probably got it TOO much when I first discovered it). There are definitely differences between when I first ate it to this last time, despite being different locations. I noticed the sauce, while still being quite delicious, is definitely thinner than before (on the verge of being watered down). The fact that it is still addictively delicious says alot about the sauce. The chicken is still tender and flavorful, but the rice seems to be soggier than before. ALL THAT BEING SAID, I'd still happily come back to any rooster and rice location...but it seems like they are focusing on maximizing how far their ingredients last.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
I worked today and before o drove home came in for my late lunch/Earle dinner. I haven't had this chicken dish since Covid, I normally order in the city and saw they were at Valley Fair Shopping Center. For service, there is someone who takes and calls your ticket number to get your meal. Regarding ambiance, modern and some what clean. I didn't see anyone clean my table when I left.

Farhana M.

Yelp
Really like the khao tom gai, its flavorful, super hot and delicious. I also ordered the original but customized it to do only thigh, extra cilantro and extra cucumber. Sadly they ignored this customization and i got a sad helping of greens. Nevertheless, rooster and rice is always super yummy so I'll definitely come back to one of the locations

Stephanie L.

Yelp
I got the cutlet which is my go-to order whenever I come here. It comes with a bowl full of rice and chicken thigh, sriracha sauce, pickled veggies with a side of soup. I'd say it's pretty affordable for what you get and it tastes good as well. It was a simple dinner meal for me.

Sovanny S.

Yelp
Quick bite, really good. Inside the mall food court area. Kiosk to order yourself, and cafeteria style.

Alisa B.

Yelp
The KMG Sauce is so good! Definitely get the thigh meat, you already know the breast will be pretty dry. If you're trying to get gains, the chicken rice and the side of broth will help moisten the breat meat. Overall, the portions are pretty decent and I loved the flavor in the rice surprisingly! I would recommend for takeout. It's not a must try among all the food at Valley Fair though.

Brenda L.

Yelp
This is one of the many new restaurants that have recently popped up in Valley Fair. I personally do like khao man gai as a dish but feel it's a dish that has been hyped up way more than it should be and costs more than it should be (especially for the portion size you get) for what you get. Service was not the best when we were there - the person manning the counter kept going back to the kitchen and was nowhere to be seen. The food is good but this wouldn't be our first choice when there are so many other options in the mall.

Mike J.

Yelp
First time eating at this restaurant. The other restaurants line in this mall was really long so we grabbed a bite here, thinking it's the next best thing nextdoor but we were wrong and their food sorry to say wasn't to our liking!!!

J Christian E.

Yelp
Pretty good option for some lean healthy protein. I tried their original today. It came with soup, rice, sauce, cucumbers, cilantro, and chicken. The chicken was cooked good and was surprised the breast wasn't dry. I normally don't prefer white meat but it was not bad. The sauce is absolutely delicious and probably my favorite experience--paired well with everything. Service was also quick and friendly.

Alex L.

Yelp
One of my favorite go-to places for lunch. I get The Original which comes with the breast/thigh chicken with fragrant Jasmine rice, with a side of some ginger peanut mix sauce and chicken broth. The sauce definitely amplifies the taste of everything, which is what I enjoy the most about it. For $15, you get a nutritious meal that keeps you full almost all day. There is limited seating here as it's more of a takeout place in the mall, but can seat about 3 groups of people and some single seating as well. Today, the chicken was extra good - a nice balance of juicy and tender. The reason I give 4 stars is due to the inconsistency of the chicken, sometimes it can be extra dry while other times are like today where it's perfectly cooked. If you want something quick that will fill you up, I recommend giving this place a try!

Ervin A.

Yelp
$15 for bland, flavorless, colorless, mushy chicken, rice, some chicken broth and 3 slices of cucumber. The guy working the register recommended the #1, he said it's the most popular. He didn't say it's HIS personal favorite and I appreciate the honesty. Don't go here, they'll be out of business soon, no doubt about it.

Mary C.

Yelp
Dropped by here in the mall on a Saturday evening when all the restaurants was full. We ordered The miso udon and the chicken katsu curry. The udon was mediocre, possibly a little overcooked. The miso soup had good flavor. Chicken katsu was quite moist with a good crunchy crust and the curry was quite flavorful. I would recommend this dish. My favorite was the option to add green onion and tempura bits to the dishes. They also had fresh ginger and spicy flakes. Service was decent.

Henry L.

Yelp
Pretty solid spot for chicken and rice. The original Khao Mun Gai is fire and should be the first thing you order if it is your initial visit. The combo comes with soup, pickled cucumbers, and a drink of choice. Great place to avoid the crowds during high traffic on the weekends in the food court. The source is amazing--just dump it over the chicken and rice!

Peter L.

Yelp
I used to like this chain, but after having visited Chicken meets Rice my standards have been reset. The chicken here is not bad, but its not as juicy or tender, the rice also is not as fragrant compared to its competitor.

Caitlyn C.

Yelp
I ordered #1 here after I had a great experience from the SF location in SoMa. Not sure what happened to the quality of chicken, but almost half of the dish was mushy chicken breast (maybe old chicken?) which I still ate a few pieces of the bad pieces and tried covering up the grossness with the sauce because I was hungry. Here's a picture of what's left after I satisfied my hunger, but I can't erase that memory of mushy chicken. Luckily I didn't get food poisoning. Never again. :/ P.S. if anyone can tell me why chicken gets this way and why a restaurant would serve it, please let me know. I will resort to google for now and stay away from chicken for a while, too. Hope I can get over this. Thank you in advance.

Danny N.

Yelp
I love this spot for a quick lunch! The plates they serve are simple yet delicious. My personal favorite is The Chicken Cutlet. It is packed full of flavor and the serving size is perfect. The broth is rich and delicious as well. Definitely can't go wrong when you order from here!

Bryan L.

Yelp
Reasonable prices and super filling food! They make their own sriracha which is really good too.

Crystal L.

Yelp
This place now charges $2 extra if you want any scallion ginger sauce or any chili sauce, in place of their brown dipping sauce. Also charges Extra $1 if you want all thigh meat. Unfortunately, none of the above information is obvious until it comes time to pay. Complimentary water is no longer provided - you have to pay for bottled water. There are many other places in the Bay Area that offer chicken rice, such as chicken meets rice, that provide a number of complimentary sauces and do not charge extra for thigh meat. I will be giving this place a miss next time I go to the mall.

Sunil R.

Yelp
You know the scenario where there is one friend in a group who is very attractive and gets ALL the attention while the others are ignored. That's the situation with Ramen Nagi and all the other eateries in the vicinity. It was a little sad to see the LONG line of people waiting to get into Ramen Nagi and Rooster and Rice with just a couple of people inside. I got the cutlet with rice and veggies. The food was decent. The chicken was a little dry, the rice was flavorful and the "veggies" was a super tiny portion. The wait was not too bad and I was out in around ~12 minutes. I like the setup and decor which was simple and modern.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
This Rooster & Rice location is located in the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara. Parking is either in the parking lot or garage parking - it is free for the first 2 hours, then $1/hour. It is a nice change of the food scene from the usual spots in the mall's food court. I tried their Khao Tom Gai, Larb Popcorn Chicken, The Cutlet, and The Original. Their chicken is just okay and portions are small for the price. The Khao Tom Gai and Larb Popcorn chicken were good, but way too expensive for what it was - similar price as the main entrees with even smaller portions.

Susanna L.

Yelp
Rooster & Rice is a case study proving that simple, when done well, can still provide a five-star dining experience. Rooster & Rice's menu consists of 4 variations on Khao Mun Gai, which is Thai chicken rice (which is fairly similar to Hainan chicken rice if you've ever had that). I got The Original which comes with both chicken breast and thigh meat over a bed of chicken rice and a side of cucumbers. The chicken was tender with a good bite. But I have to say my favorite part of the dish was the rice - it's so savory and flavorful that every mouthful is a treat. Rooster & Rice is located on the second floor right next to Ramen Nagi. If you're not paying close attention it's easy to miss their storefront as there's always a line of people waiting for Ramen Nagi. But for those with keens eyes and and a taste for chicken rice, if you choose to dine at Rooster & Rice, then you'll definitely find your craving satisfied.

Yan L.

Yelp
Great price, solid taste, and healthy. I paid $23 for a combo it came with popcorn chicken, poached chicken and rice, a Thai tea, and chicken broth. Larb popcorn chicken - much better than most places it was lightly fried and really crispy. The sauce was similar to Buffalo with a little kick and there was actually chicken in it, rather than being all breading/dough. Original chicken - the rice was really good, seasoned and cooked well. The chicken was obviously bland as expected but soaked up the soy garlic ginger sauce. I didn't like the chicken broth, not much flavor, some people might like it. Overall, 5 stars for price, value, and taste.

James C.

Yelp
Original. Sauce is good. Garlic and sweet Cutlet. Rice a bit dry. Chicken cutlet is crunchy. Sauce is slightly sour. Not too bad but I think the Pleasanton one is better.

Brenda L.

Yelp
The good: This place is located on the 2nd floor of Valley Fair mall and is a great option for lunch. It's trendy, colorful and has a simple and straight forward menu. The interior has a few tables fit for ~4 people and a communal high table with stools. You self-order from a tablet. I got the original chicken and rice for around $15. The dipping sauce for the chicken was delicious. I could easily eat just rice and the sauce. I also tried the fried popcorn chicken and thought it was tasty. The dish came with some sliced cucumber and the portion size was a the appropriate amount for one to eat. The food was made pretty quickly. My 9 month old enjoyed the dish. The bad: The chicken had a lot less skin and was a lot more white breast meat. This is a con for some but may be a pro for others. It definitely seems like a more Westernized and healthy version of chicken and rice. The chicken rice wasn't as fragrant as the typical chicken rice in this type of dish. The fried popcorn chicken dish was slightly dry. I would've liked more cilantro. There was only about one sprig on my dish. The interesting: They sell merch online (hats, shirts, etc). You can also purchase gift cards. They have over 10 locations.

Alice P.

Yelp
This place needs better management. We were the only guest and the front desk person forgot to pack an item and also forgot my request to pack an item separately. Doesn't pickup phone during biz hours either (although the staff I saw was on the phone almost the whole time we were there). I love the chain itself but this location needs to be taken care of. I'm finally leaving a review because I just tasted my broth soup and it's gone bad. Sigh... Update: the chicken porridge has also gone bad (I bought these last night and were kept in the fridge)

Nicole N.

Yelp
Love this place. My boyfriend and I came here for a quick meal and glad we did. I tried chicken and rice but this place is waaay better. We got the cutlet and original. Both were good. The cutlet was so good with their spicy sauce. The rice and broth were flavorful. Wish there was more cucumbers tho. Must try

Mary L.

Yelp
Still love this chain very much. People are always very friendly and efficient. Had the Khao Tom Gai chicken rice porridge side dish today with a side of healthy steamed white meat chicken. Tasted excellent! I love small portion foods, but it must be good! I can see that prices have gone up a little, but they have good selections and quality of meals. I am a fan of good tasting authentic foods. This place serves great foods for sure. Cashier was helpful. Do tip them if possible. Everything is very organized. Long lines for takeout foods can be a hassle at times, but most of the time, it's a solid experience here. If you're willing to spend $20-$22 for lunch with a drink, then it's really not bad here at all. Easy walk around ValleyFair shopping mall. Ramen Nagi always have long never ending lines at lunchtime . Vietnoms noodle place next door didn't have much customers at lunchtime today. I'm glad I chose this one because it was the better quick fix. This place should get a larger restaurant space. It would totally grow because people love their white meat chicken. It's very healthy. No weight gains.

Jen T.

Yelp
30 minute wait time only to receive the soggiest, most bland chicken. Will not be coming back to this branch of Rooster & Rice again.

Rosy L.

Yelp
yummmm i love this. hai nam chicken is my comfort food. i ordered the original and it was bombb. i will say, if you're not a fan of eating foods that tend to be more plain, then it might not be for you. they come with a sweet and spicy flavored sauce, it's pretty good. in my opinion, rooster and rice is overlooked because it's located right next to ramen nagi and marugame, making it look hidden. but try it, it's yumm

Jacqueline N.

Yelp
I usually love chicken rice places, but this place doesn't quite hit the mark after trying it several times. What made me write this review was the disappointment I felt getting their popcorn chicken Popcorn chicken - Do NOT order the popcorn chicken here. How is it a small serving of popcorn chicken is MORE than an actual entree? Nothing special, not worth $15.22 Chicken cutlet - Fried chicken cutlet with their chicken rice and a side of picked cucumbers and soup. Imo the best option on their menu Chicken breast rice plate - chicken is juicy but lacks flavor. The sauce they give you doesn't pack the most punch, so I recommend getting the other options

Irene L.

Yelp
This is located inside Valley Fair mall (not at the food court) but right next to Ramen Nagi. They do have dine in so you can sit and people watch those who are in line for ramen lol. I wanted to try both the Original and Cutlet so decided to get the cutlet with a side of the chicken thighs - I recommend thigh if you like dark meat. It came with a side of broth, sauce for the cutlet, and some pickled onions, carrots, cucumbers. A huge bummer that the side of chicken did not come with sauce - it's additional $1 for side of sauce.. Overall, both the cutlet and chicken thighs were very tender and tasty! Also, I'm a huge fan of the rice (I believe it was cooked in chicken broth) - it was soft and flavorful!

Nicholas G.

Yelp
I'm so glad they have a place like this to eat chicken rice but instead of the Singapore version this is the Thai version? Anyways regardless it was delicious. Ordered a rice plate with all chicken thighs and a side of the soup. The rice was infused with the perfect amount of broth. Can't wait to go back to eat it again!

A D.

Yelp
If only I can give a negative review.., I ordered in this restaurant since we were hungry and there was no queue (every other restaurant had a large queue). I ordered 2 "vegetarian rice" which was about $27.90 ( plus 15% tip), the tables we were seated weren't getting cleaned so we had to move around and choose a spot which was relatively clean. The dish was literally a cup of boiled brown rice, blanched tofu, cauliflower, broccolli, a cup of soup (which tasted like salted rice broth) and brownish sweet ginger sauce. We were a bit disappointed given the high price tag and being served such a bland dish (which should cost nothing more than $4), we were hoping to have some kind of vegetarian fried rice. Here comes the worst part, 5 minutes after finishing it, we both felt stomach discomfort, dizziness and wanted to sit down. I eventually had to puke it out to feel better. I think its probably due to the brown ginger sauce or half-boiled food that our stomach start revolting.

John J.

Yelp
Chicken taste good! The sauce works well the chicken! The soup is the best chicken soup!

Jessie Z.

Yelp
In the mall!! For December they currently have a scan deal for 15% off. Lots of space to distance with markers and plenty of area to park around the mall. Surprisingly for a hainese chicken place I would actually recommend the cutlet. We ordered the number ones which comes with chicken, rice soup, cucumbers and sauce. I was a little disappointed as the chicken was dry and there wasn't the characteristic fragrant garlic steamed taste, neither did they have the fresh garlic/ginger and red chili pepper side. The portion was good, but the chicken definitely needed the sauce. The soup was super fragrant and yummy though and the thing they did best was most of the packaging was eco friendly and compostable :). Portion size it was very good and very filling, they also have a protein style one for people who are low carb!

Yaxing C.

Yelp
Ordered and waited for 20 minutes, went to check and they said they missed making it. Ended up cancelling it. LMFAO. Oh btw we were 1 of the only 2 groups of guests there.

Bennett W.

Yelp
The original is something I always order when I visit Rooster & Rice. But this time, I only ordered a side of rice and a Thai Tea. The rice I ate was actually flavorful and delicious. One thing I always liked about Rooster & Rice is the way they prepare their food. Good food that is fresh and delicious. Also, it comes naturally delicious and it's greaseless. I give them big time bonus points for this. PROPS INDEED! This is truly something they do a very good job on. The serving portions are reasonable, I really like how they put together a meal of rice and chicken with some veggies. Friendly staff and good service there. So, I thought it's worth the visit. I'd highly recommend Rooster & Rice. Rooster & Rice, thank you for those delicious chicken and rice meals. Oh, FYI: Upon my visit here today, dine-in returned. Yes, you can order your food for takeout or eat in. For dine-ins, this location is suitable for 10-20 diners. For the identifier: Macy's and the ShowPlace ICON theatre happen to be close by. Yes, they are on level two at Westfield Valley Fair. It certainly adds flexibility to dining options. When you need to get something to eat before or after the movie, Rooster & Rice got you covered.

Christopher E.

Yelp
Rooster and Rice is definitely amongst the healthier, yet flavorful choices at Valley Fair. They don't emphasize on the sauce they use, more the techniques to serve good tasting food. I use them on my lunch breaks and the ordering process is smooth and easy. Although I can't imagine why it takes 15 min to cook fried popcorn chicken on a dead day at the mall but it's still better than Shake Shack. And yeah the Chicken is hella good, idk what Larb is but it's good. Now, the reason I took time to write this review is because I want the owner to know the HABANERO SAUCE tastes terrible. Who are you catering to?? The sweet sriracha is a much less burning experience. And in the picture you see that other sauce (brown), THAT RIGHT THERE IS THE BEST SAUCE FOR THE POPCORN CHICKEN!! I swear it can't be done another way for now on. Also $1 for 20¢ worth of sauce is a huge rip off, you need some milk. Also also, "5 more orders until your free meal", after spending $200.....Fried Chicken

Brianna W.

Yelp
Location: This place is located inside the Westfield mall next to ramen nagi on the second floor. I ordered the #1 original. It came with half breast and half thigh meat and a layer of white rice underneath the chicken. On the side was their special house sauce and and some cucumbers! I also got their ginger scallion sauce which was a $1 extra. I thought it was ok but would prefer getting the house sauce that they provide. It also came with a clear side soup which taste like your average asian side soup. I also got a canned Lychee Sanzo sparking drink for $3.50. It was good but thought it was a tad expensive. I thought overall the dish was not bad. It a great go to spot that very clean and not too heavy.

Diana H.

Yelp
Love this place! Always delicious, fresh food The Chicken and Rice Original with extra KMG sauce can't be beat!!

V C.

Yelp
I always find myself slightly happier every time I find a new chicken rice places to try in the South Bay Area. After trying Rooster & Rice in SF, I have been quite fond and undeniably a big fan of Khao Mun Gai (KMG) dish! The Original - the dish comes with chicken breast and thigh with skin, and chicken broth infused jasmine rice. First of all, I love the thigh - It was moist, tender and simply delicious. The breast, on the other hand, was dry and tasteless, which I'd most likely skip and will opt for all thighs next time. For the rice, I was expecting savory and fragrant flavor, but overall, it was a bit dry and tasted quite subtle and bare. The chicken broth, however, was delicious and flavorful. Don't forget to use their dipping sauce (a mix of ginger, garlic and soy bean sauce) which have this sweet tangy flavor. It compliments the taste of the rice and chicken very well! In all, sad to say... The food, didn't knock my socks off as it once did in SF, but considering the convenience of eating at the mall, the nice-sized portion and the comforting, familiar flavors, I'll most likely give Rooster & Rice another try.
