Over a decade ago, I went to New Orleans on a road trip and the whole group of us stopped in Mobile for some Mexican food. I don't remember where exactly we stopped, but my Chicano self was thrilled at finding food as good as my dad made.
My companion and I kept trying to find that restaurant to no avail (although apparently our host told us it was probably one specific restaurant to be left purposely unnamed here as to not deter from the intended review).
Anyhow, we wound up at Roosters as I wanted tacos and the lady at the reception desk at Candlewood Suites nearby heavily recommended this place. Have to say she killed it. This place was just as delicious, perhaps even more so than the last time we had tacos in Mobile. Oh, the memories. Tear.
Nostalgia aside, we just barely made it to the restaurant. In fact, I think we were the last people they sat. They stop taking customers at 9 PM on Saturday, so yes folks, I could definitely tell I wasn't in South Florida anymore.
As far as drinks went, I abstained, but my companion had a Corona. He also had chorizo rice and beans and the plate was massive. The same can be said for my tacos. I ordered the spicy chicken tacos, which were only two, but they were stuffed to the brim and had an accompanying side of chips and guacamole.
I think my only regret with my order was that I only have so much stomach. I couldn't finish my meal, and goodness knows I wanted to. The food really took me by surprise. The jalapeños in the tacos were extremely fresh, perhaps the best I've ever had. If I could, I would totally take this restaurant with me back home. It was amazing.
I loved the place so much that I bought a couple of souvenir t-shirts from them, so my companion and I could remember the restaurant (seeing as we couldn't remember the restaurant we went to over a decade ago). I think we found our Mexican restaurant in Mobile, although yes, this is more generally Latin American food, but from this Chicano self, anyone with Mexican roots would be thrilled with Roosters.
