Roots was an awesome experience. There was a bit of a wait time but definitely worth it. The savory waffle was amazing. The chicken was fried and seasoned really well. The butter and light syrup was a perfect combination. Their cold brew was rich and flavorful. The cappuccino was sweetened but still very balanced and flavorful. Their toast was delicious and fulfilling. Highly recommend this place!

Google
I wanted to like this place with how aestheticly pleasing it looked and inviting (initially) it was. We got seated outside and waited a solid 15 minutes before I got fed up and had to go inside to get someone's attention. There were 2/3 greeters just chatting away rather than helping navigate our server to our section. Our server eventually came out to get our order (which was fine) but the food overall lacked flavor. I ate the chicken & waffles but the chicken thigh still had that silver skin/membrane on it which made it tough to chew. I'm not one to throw away food so I ate what I could. My son had the chicken strips & potatoes, with the potatoes tasting almost uncooked and lacked seasoning. We also had the chilaquiles which was down right bad, I get that this isn't an authentic Mexican nor a Tex-Mex restaurant but come on, how do you mess up chilaquiles. It's the most simple Mexican dish. Then towards the end of our meal, it felt like our server just forgot about us. The inside of the restaurant was nearly empty which put the cherry on top for me. Waste of money & time.

Google
Parking was easy, we came and ate on Sunday at 2:00 no wait at all. The place looked clean and felt like I was welcomed into someone’s home. You definitely get what you paid for, food portions are a nice size where you’re full and don’t need a box. I Will definitely be returning and bringing my family when they come to town!

Google
This was an absolute knock out of the ballpark!!! All of the staff were super attentive and were willing to help anywhere as needed. As for the food…wow! Soooo good! Not from the area, but this restaurant definitely left an impression on us. Everything that we had was just down right perfect. We would 100% return again! If you’re looking for a delicious breakfast spot, this is it! We had the Eggs Benedict, Hill Country Breakfast, Biscuits & Gravy, and Sourdough toast. Truly all were amazing and would recommend each one. I would recommend either booking ahead online or expecting a wait as it’s very busy.

Mark C.

Google
I’ve eaten here several times, and the service has always been quick and friendly. There’s seating inside and outside. The egg dishes like frittata are a great choice - tons of meat or veggies - and the chicken and grits special was a big hit.

Google
Visited Root Cellar Cafe during a girls trip. We called ahead and were told there was no wait time however upon arrival we did have to wait about 20 min, I believe due to short staff because we asked to be sitting outside, all tables were available yet still had to wait. Besides that some ladies did enjoy their food more then others and the others thought it was just okay. In general, nothing negative.

Google
Amazing Food & Even Better People!!! We had the most incredible experience at this restaurant (Sunday brunch) — one that will stick with us for a long time, not just because of the food (which was phenomenal), but because of the exceptional kindness and service we received from start to finish. It was a super rainy day, and just as we were walking in, our three-year-old got completely drenched. Before we could even get settled, the staff noticed and immediately stepped in. Fonda (the manager) brought us warm towels and even a hot chocolate for our little girl to help her warm up — such an unexpected and thoughtful gesture. It honestly meant so much. Our server, Kenley, was equally amazing — kind, attentive, and incredibly welcoming. Multiple members of the staff checked in on us throughout the meal and made us feel truly cared for. Another sweet moment: a different server came by and handed our one-year-old son a little toy car to play with while we ate. It was such a small gesture, but so helpful — and just one more example of how thoughtful and family-friendly this place is. And the food? Absolutely DELICIOUS!!! The kids devoured their eggs, potatoes, and fruit. I had the avocado toast, and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done. My husband had the Chilaquiles and he couldn’t stop talking about how good it was. Topped it all with french toast to share - SO YUMMY!!!!! When incredible food is paired with genuine, heartfelt service like this, it creates something really special. Huge thank you to Kenleyn, Fonda, and the entire team for going so far above and beyond. We will absolutely be back — and we’ll be telling everyone we know to come here too!!

Google
The Root Cellar has become our new favorite breakfast and lunch spot. If you haven’t been or haven’t been in a bit, give it a try. Eggs were perfect. Biscuits are amazing. Bacon, garlic potatoes and gravy are delicious. We also love Meg’s chicken salad and the Islander salad. Excellent food and great staff. Clay is our favorite waiter but overall a great staff and consistently great food.
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
Our food was delicious, we started with the Brussel sprouts, had the French toast and steak and eggs. But our most enjoyable part of the experience was our server. Kamryn was awesome! Very attentive, made substitutes that she could had easily said "we can't do that to". Very professional and cool at the same time.
google avatar

Dorris T.

Yelp
I come here all the time. They have the best beet burger around. Great service and check out my pic. Look how fresh and healthy that beet burger looks. Love the atmosphere here too. Their check-in area is an old ice chest from the early 1900's. So cute. And thy have an old fridge that is just so beautiful. Everything here is just great. Love this place.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast and sat at the bar -- great choice, place was on a 30 min wait. The vibe was relaxed, and Gummy behind the bar was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We had the eggs, grits, and avocado toast, and everything was spot on. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the grits were creamy and well-seasoned. The avocado toast had that perfect balance of freshness and crunch. You can tell they use quality ingredients. Coffee was hot, which I always appreciate when I'm at the bar. Overall, it's the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer -- comfortable, welcoming, and consistently good food. Definitely a spot I'll come back to and try the lunch!

Yelp
Root Cellar Cafe offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere where comfort meets creativity in every dish. Whether you're stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this charming spot delivers delicious, locally-sourced meals with a seasonal twist. The breakfast menu is a standout, with hearty options like their shrimp and grits or french toast making it the perfect start to the day. The lunch and dinner selections don't disappoint either, featuring an array of vibrant salads, savory sandwiches, and mouthwatering entrees that highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients. Whether you're after something light or indulgent, the flavors are consistently top-notch. What really sets Root Cellar Cafe apart is their commitment to quality and sustainability. The ambiance is cozy yet modern, offering both indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy your meal in any weather. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to recommend the perfect pairing or dish. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite or lingering over a leisurely meal, the cafe manages to strike the perfect balance between casual and refined, making it an excellent choice for any time of day. They also have picnic option for a nice day. I'll leave a photo of the picnic process.

Yelp
We ate at the bar and we're well served. We ate all the things, Brussel sprouts, pesto pasta with chicken and a tender chicken sandwich on a fluffy chibata bun. Our cocktails were fun, strawberry basil mimosa and a limey gin drink. All food was made by experts! The ambience is a cozy farm house. We'll return for the dinner menu! Ps the snickerdoodle bread pudding is mandatory!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
This is such a cute place and their cold brew is delicious! However the food and service left a lot to be desired. I went with my parents before it was even busy and we didn't see our server much for water or coffee refills. The portions were big, but the flavor was lacking. It also seemed like everything was an add-on charge. They asked if sunny side up was okay for my hash and I asked for poached- up charge, so Nevermind. My moms got the hill country breakfast, and while it was massive, there was a drizzle of cold gravy on it- not enough for the huge biscuits. She asked for more and some that was hot- another upcharge. Not sure I'd be back as it wasn't that memorable. I think I'll stick to the one in San Marcos.
google avatar

Tina Marie C.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner on a Saturday night. We love the one in San Marcos & this location did not disappoint. There was no wait for a table for dinner at around 7:30pm which was refreshing. The building is cute, clean & airy with many windows. The landscaping around the building has so many beautiful live oak trees. The bathroom was super cute & handicap accessible. Fonda waited on us & kept our water glasses filled. She was attentive & friendly. The food came out quickly. I had my favorite: seared salmon with balsamic rice & vegetables. I love the tangy vinaigrette on the side salad. I wish they served a side of the eggplant chips that they put on top of the salmon. Those are amazing! We had the brownie with ice cream for dessert & the fresh whipped topping was the best. Everything was wonderful. This place is a great date night meal.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was amazing out the door. Very friendly servers. I ordered the savory Belgian waffles the siracha honey was fire! So so yummy! They have a full espresso With delicious coffee!! I was so happy to find a good breakfast place with real coffee not just drip. Hope y'all enjoy your visit as much as I did
google avatar

Alexis G.

Yelp
I'm still dreaming about the shrimp pesto like I'm literally obsessed with it. Came here with some family friends & we made a reservation but you honestly don't have to. The vibe is kinda like a modern farmhouse but let me tell you the service, drinks and food were amazing. I'd also HIGHLY recommend the butter + bread, and don't be modest get 2 of them. You won't regret it!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We love Root Cellar Cafe! While it can get loud, the food is well worth the visit. Today was no exception. Brunch at Root Cellar. Highly recommend the chicken fried ribeye and eggs. Hubby always ops for the Hill Country breakfast. Both excellent. Wait staff are friendly and attentive. Give them a try!

Yelp
So, I have been here for breakfast but I never made it back for dinner. Well, now I know I plan to be back many times. Just want to share this story first. A group of my pickleball friends planned to meet for lunch there. I got there first and was told they were closing for something unexpected happening. No biggie. Easy to understand those things happen. Well, they gave me a $10 gift card for not being able to have me dine there at the moment. They also offered a serving of bread pudding!! Man, that is great customer service. They left me with a great impression of them even though I wasn't able to eat there. We went for dinner last night and loved it. We had the Asparagus fries which were yummy! I would only suggest for it to be a larger amount. We also had the Spinach Artichoke Dip. That was very good and loved their chips. A Sausage Potato Chowder and Side Salad were ordered. I did not order them but could tell that my guys were impressed with them. I ordered the Salmon with Balsamic Glaze over Rice Pilaf and Veggies. Salmon and glaze were great. The Rice Pilaf was perfectly prepared which is not something I can always say. And I loved the veggies. My guys both ordered the Pot Roast. I never understand why they would order that in a restaurant because I make a really, really good Pot Roast. They have ordered in the past and always disappointed. Not here!! Oh my gosh, it was really good!! Different from mine and most pot roasts. The green beans were perfectly prepared as well. I cannot stand mushy veggies. These were al dente perfect. We cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
Service was great. We were welcomed and seated right away. Our drinks were taken promptly. Our food was great! Hill Country Breakfast didn't disappoint. Gravy is my favorite. Good flavor, right hunt if jalapeño without being spicy. Biscuit was nice thickness. I'm not a potato person but the homefries were a good crispness!

Yelp
I traveled to the New Braunfels location last week to try some try a this restaurant because I am thinking of hiring this catering company to do my wedding. Service was a little rough getting seated and served the correct drinks. The waiter informed us of what was in season and we order some great meals. Not pictured is my salad or what is left of it. I was hungry but I can assure you the food was all that good.

Taco B.

Yelp
Everything priced on menus was $1.50-2 more on receipt so check that out if you do try this place! Other than that it was pretty good!

Yelp
We frequent the Root Cellar in San Marcos so we were excited when they opened one closer to home. We were meeting friends tonight so figured it would be the perfect time to check them out. Reserving a table was pretty easy. Loved the location, loved the ambience. Our server was pretty chill, entertaining and was always on top of things. I did not even need to look at the menu because I knew exactly what I wanted - crispy fried Brussels sprouts for appetizer and shrimp n grits. Yup! I dream about their shrimp and grits. We also ordered beer bread with honey butter, a brew house burger(another favorite), a chicken fried ribeye steak and blackened mahi-mahi tacos. I also tried their Bee sting cocktail. The Brussels sprouts were as expected, crunchy and delicious. The beer bread was pretty good too. I wish I could say the same of the entrees. I was told the chicken fried ribeye was ok. The mahi tacos got an " ok, I guess" . The usual brewhouse burger loving person in our group thought it was just an ordinary burger, no bacon tomato jam. The biggest disappointment though was the shrimp n grits. The shrimps were cooked perfectly but the grits was not creamy at all, it was dry. It was topped with what I thought was either pieces of crispy bacon or spam or pancetta, not chorizo. This definitely was not the same shrimp n grits that I love. I am not ashamed to say that at the San Marcos location, I lick the bowl clean. Here, 80% came home with me. Except for the chicken ribeye steak, everything else ended in to-go boxes. The Bee sting was ok too but it's not something I will order again. At this time, we would rate the service a 5* and the food 3*.

Yelp
I came here with my family for breakfast. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I will definitely go back when I return to New Braunfels.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here for dinner yesterday (Saturday) around 5:15 and were seated immediately and without a reservation, which was nice. Although when we left around 6 at that point they did have a little bit of a wait. Our server was Fonda and she did a great job taking care of us. As for the food, it was all delicious! The hummus appetizer with half chips half pita was on point. The crab cakes were a little pricey but also solid. The entrees were also very good. I haven't had chicken fried ribeye before, but trying that with mashed potatoes was made for a very good entree. My fiancé also liked her bourbon pecan chicken entree as well. We also tried the snickerdoodle bread pudding dessert, which my fiancé enjoyed (I personally am not the biggest fan of bread pudding, but people who like bread pudding would probably enjoy it). Overall, it was a great experience! We would come back again.

Yelp
Came in during the rush looking for a hearty breakfast. Sat at the bar to avoid the wait where our order was promptly and politely taken. For those of you not wanting booze with your breakfast there is a plethora of juices. I had apple juice, cold and crisp in a mason jar. Later I had a coffee that was both smooth and refreshing. However!! If you find yourself wanting to pair your plate with a pint, a spritz or something to make you rosey cheeked. Their selection of whiskeys is quite impressive as is the mixed/specialty drink list. For breakfast I want with the smokehouse hash! From order to food hitting the table took about 12 minutes. Pros: that kale was the bees knees. Along with the whole plate all the flavors both natural and added were really good! I could eat that every day! Cons: I only got a few slices of sausage that I didn't see until the bottom. Flavor was fantastic, but I feel it wasn't used as well in the contextual mix of the dish. Would have enjoyed a slice or two more in the bowl. All in all, really good stuff! Next time Im exploring the mixed drinks and getting a waffle! Well done yall!
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Delicious comfort food and delightful service (ask for Jenna) are just a couple of reasons to frequent this New Braunfels' gem. At Root Cellar, you're warmly welcomed, and have an expansive menu of breakfast, brunch and lunch options. I recommend the savory Belgium waffle, and their bright and refreshing cold brew. Note: I have a cinnamon allergy. It was reassuring how concerned and cautious the whole team was in ensuring none of the spicy bitterness touched my plate. Cheers!

Lorena M.

Yelp
What my bf likes to call one of my bougie breakfast places I pick. Service was great. The food was delicious.
google avatar

Stacy R.

Yelp
Service and food were great! The atmosphere was unique and clean. The plates had a good presentation and were filling.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
This is one of those places that I'd like to keep a secret so I don't have to wait to be seated! But it's so good and the service is fantastic, they deserve the recognition and business. Their sausage patties and jalapeño cream gravy are my whole reason for Saturday mornings! Coffee stays full, even with a splash of Bailey's in it. ;)

Fernando Y.

Yelp
After checking reviews I decided to check out the restaurant myself on a Monday (midmorning). Few people, but tables filled over the hour I was there. Server Jordan was pleasant and attentive. Her smile set a nice tone for my breakfast. The Hill Country Breakfast was good. The serving was generous. The black coffee actually tasted like coffee - a plus for me. My only negative would be how loud it became inside, especially when young children with very loud voices were seated nearby. Their mothers spoke loudly as well. Oh well, I'll have to come earlier next time. : )
google avatar

Veronica Z.

Yelp
The food is so delicious - I mean the chicken and waffles and the Hill country (biscuits and gravy) are to die for. Everyone here is so attentive and fast! The coffee is the best around - like I LOVE this place!! Hands down the best breakfast! Did someone say mimosas?? So delicious and reasonably priced! Bring your friends and enjoy a good time - you will thank me!
google avatar

Vince N.

Yelp
What a fantastic place! The ambiance is just awesome, and everything is put together so well. The service was great, and you can really see how well the staff works together. Plus, the food was absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Adam N.

Yelp
What a wonderful hidden gem in New Braunfels! I really like the vibe of this place-very homey. We had a large group that we were entertaining, and they put us in the private room in the back which was perfect. Food and drinks were excellent, along with our service-can't ask for more than that. The food is made from scratch and you can definitely taste the difference in the quality of food here. I had the Better Than Mom's meatloaf and it was absolutely delectable. It was really moist and tender, and not dried out at all-I would absolutely recommend this dish. Check this place out!
google avatar

Kacy S.

Yelp
We went for brunch and the service and food were AMAZING! Very cute location and the whole team over there is great as well! Definitely makes it into the restaurant rotation! Shrimp and grits are the best in town!
google avatar

Thomas G.

Yelp
We hosted a family celebration for a Texas State grad. The folks at Root Cellar arranged a great space for our party of 12. Our server was attentive, the space was private enough and our food service was timed very well. Our food was very tasty and my "I'm your huckleberry" drink was delicious. Would like to come back again for lunch.

Alyssa J.

Yelp
Food was amazing!! The French toast was made with challah and tossed in cinnamon sugar. Good even without the syrup. The eggs Benedict was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were super crispy and delicious. Trevor and Debrah gave amazing service and the restaurant is comfy and cozy, perfect for this cold rainy weather.

Mya C.

Yelp
Delicious food and drink! Relaxed and comfortable vibe. We enjoy breakfast here regularly and have never been anything but full and happy! Excellent wait staff that hover just enough and never rush us. Enjoy this great restaurant!

Abigail C.

Yelp
Great food, cute place! Went there for breakfast and some caffeine, accomplished both well

K G.

Yelp
Waiter was amazing and took great care of us. Atmosphere was very cute. It was a bit too cold, so bring a light jacket. The food was good, but the portions were a bit of a miss. Seemed you'd get more for your $20 per plate than a 2 by 3 inch piece of meat and a dollop of potatoes. I've heard breakfast is better, so I will give it another try.
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
First and foremost: THANK YOU, ELLA! It's so rare to have perfectly timed service that's neither too intrusive, nor too aloof. She never came while our mouths were full of food, either! Ella, you are phenomenal and deserve the highest of praises! This place has such a sweet, homey farmhouse vibe to it! Adorable little wooden tables like kind all of our grandparents had decades ago. The food... OMG! First of all, those brussel sprouts with tomato bacon jam were delicious! Personally, I wanted to try all of the appetizers, but I knew I didn't have the stomach to finish it all. I definitely made the right choice by going for those brussel sprouts, though. I'll have to try the asparagus fries next time... *le sigh* My friend got the Caribbean stacker and I got the marinated eggplant sandwich. Perhaps I'm biased, but my sandwich was utterly perfect in every way! Hers was delicious for the carnivore in dire need of protein, but mine was delicious from the bottom slice to the top of that wheatberry bread sandwich. Do I need to go back? Absolutely! Next time, I'm going for asparagus and the beet & goat cheese salad. Don't be surprised if I'm back in soon. #JustSayin

Yelp
Food is a great variety and presents very well. Wait staff is very friendly. Prices are a little high.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
This is quickly becoming one of our favorite places, food is excellent. There really has not been anything we tried that we did not enjoy. Service is fast and friendly, sometimes too talkative, but it is nice to have conversation from time to time as well. Definately a place to go when you want home style, fresh food and get away from the same old same old restaurants around town.
google avatar

LaToya S.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I came in for brunch. From the time we walked in the door until the time we left out, everyone working, there were extremely welcoming and very nice. Our waitress, I forgot her name, was awesome! She was attentive to everyone's needs, and kept refilling our drinks as they became low. The food was amazing! I ordered the Brazilian French toast with a side of bacon and eggs. Everything came out hot and fresh. They gave me plentiful French toast that I could have taken some home. This was my first time coming here, but definitely will not be my last! I recommend anyone looking for a good meal in a wonderful atmosphere to come here. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Reagan T.

Yelp
Wonderful staff. Excellent food. The salmon was so tender and the eggplant was perfectly cooked.
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
My first time having dinner here....The Brussels sprouts were amazing. The chicken was delicious. Service was amazing. Definitely, I will be back... So, I decided to try breakfast. I tried Root Cellar for breakfast. I selected the hill Country Breakfast: homemade biscuits, with excellent gravy with jalapenos (not spicy), eggs perfectly cooked. Service was impeccable. People who frequent Buttermilk Cafe...should try this place for breakfast. I decided to have their whiskey smash cocktail. ..it was excellent. If you haven't been here...give it a a try. You will not be disappointed. My waiter said the grilled cheese sandwich for lunch is awesome. I like the interior design. The manager said that they are building a play area for children and they have bands playing...not sure how often. The outside area has beautiful old oak trees.

Merry Noel B.

Yelp
Our server, Caitlin, was amazing!!!! She had 8-9 tables at once and balanced it all efficiently! The food was delicious as usually. They were out of biscuits but the sour dough toast was a good substitute.

April A.

Yelp
Went on a Sunday, was busy with a 20-30 minute wait. We were seated in 15 minutes and ordered right away. Watched as other tables were brought their food in 15 - 20 minutes. Took almost 40 minutes to get our food. My French toast was barely warm, the gravy on my husband's breakfast was already cool and congealed on top. Food would probably have been delicious if it had been hot.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
We ordered both red and white sangria. White is a little sour and bubbly which my wife loved. I had the red which was great! Not too sweet and very refreshing. We had both soup which were a tomato basil and potato sausage chowder and they were excellent! For dinner we the beet & goat cheese salad with the brew house burger which I was very impressed. Service was delightful and very attentive. If you want a great meal from start to finish with top ingredients you must try this place. Our new favorite place for dinner.

Amber O.

Yelp
First visit to Root Cellar this evening, great atmosphere and delicious food. We ordered the Beer Bread w/Honey Butter, Shrimp & Grits, and the Meatloaf all were filling. The bread was hearty, soft and fresh, shrimp was perfectly cooked and the grits were creamy. The meatloaf flavor reminded me of Mom's home cooking. Oh and the service, Clayton despite being an LSU fan, was great. He was professional, polite, shared great recommendations. We will definitely be back!!!

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Awesome place! Erin, Devina, and Riley were so helpful and attentive! Very nice place to bring your family for breakfast or brunch. We will be back!!!
google avatar

Rebekkah R.

Yelp
We've been patrons of Root Cellar for years. What keeps us coming back? THE FOOD! The SERVICE! Everything is amazing. I've never had a bad experience or an off dish. Order anything on the menu and it's a guaranteed banger. The drinks are phenomenal. The fact that the decor is so cute and comfy is just the cherry on top. Go get you some

Teri B.

Yelp
Took mom to breakfast. Jordan is as our waitress. Morning very charming, but a true professional. Food was delicious.

K M.

Yelp
Cute place to eat, nice atmosphere, and wonderful personal service from Debra our server. Delicious food and coffee. Would definitely recommend.

Troy D.

Yelp
This place is an absolute joke. My wife and I get there and they tell us to wait one second while they clean off a table. So we wait for 10 minutes and mind you we are right in front of them on a bench. Then a couple walks in and they immediately sit at an open table. Then I say why did they just sit and they say oh we forgot and now we can tell them to move.
google avatar

Alysha K.

Yelp
A really nice setting and worth waiting for a table. Jalapeño gravy is surprisingly good, good biscuits and they really stepped it up with the shrimp and grits. The only negative was the homemade jam- a strawberry blueberry mash up with cinnamon mixed in. It was underwhelming and not much flavor. Good service but busy so prepare for that
google avatar

Tina P.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. We had the porters chicken biscuit/sandwich, challah French toast, with homemade potatoes, eggs, and bacon. It's become quite rare to have a sit down meal where everything you order is impressive and served hot. Waitstaff were attentive and sweet. The restaurant itself is well thought out floor plan wise, plenty of roomy seating, and nicely decorated. We look forward to trying their picnic area with our pups and dinner soon. The Root cellar checked all of the boxes. Well deserved!!
