"This swanky waterfront restaurant in historic downtown Georgetown prides itself on grounding its cuisine on local roots. The ambiance is like a coastal speakeasy. Dinner calls for crispy Brussels sprouts tossed in a house-made ponzu sauce, any of the steaks cut in-house, a side of wild mushroom risotto, and a tall glass of the Southern Belle cocktail." - Ashley Daniels

Last night in town and visited Root! We ordered cheese curds which were over the top so those are going home! We both got specials; my wife went for pork chop and I went for scallops! Both delicious and bountiful! Food this week has been great! Interesting side story; we went on trolley tour today, more about that later, and we were telling bartender about it and how great it was! He mentioned that owner of it was sitting at bar so we asked him to pass along our compliments. He did and owner came over and thanked us and told us story about ownership! Our server was efficient and entertaining, Shekia, along with the bartenders Joshua and Mac who made great drinks and made our night great!

Google
Friendly and attentive staff, great food and nice atmosphere. I had the firecracker shrimp app and the grilled grouper with shrimp on a bed of grits with spinach. Very tasty! I ate at the bar and they have a patio with a view of the bay.

Our first time was last week. Had the Blackened Tiger shrimp on fettuccine, which was great. The website suggested dress casual so we did but many customer were casual including tee shirts and cargo shorts so don’t dress up at all.

Google
The new menu had us wanting to try so many different items. Definitely another visit soon!

Enjoyed during our vacation earlier this year. Great cocktails, bartenders provided extraordinarily generous pour of bourbon for husband I think due to the length of time it was taking to get food. They were under staffed but our waitress was wonderful. We really enjoyed the experience even if it took a long time. The meatballs with grits were superb. Fresh salads were delightful. Husband had the chocolate rubbed ribs and I had the seabass and shrimp with horseradish mashed potatoes. The portions were huge and everything tasted great.

We had just arrived in town on a Friday evening and ducked in just as a storm began. Definitely to our good fortune. We had the root burger and a swordfish special. Both were just wonderful, the swordfish especially. The only reason I gave four stars for atmosphere was that it was a little hot and crowded. Our server was super pleasant as we have found all of the locals to be. We would return to this restaurant for sure.

Where do I start. We arrived at this restaurant a party of four on Saturday Memorial Day weekend at 5:00 to celebrate our anniversary. Our server approached us and right off the bat told us they were out of eight menu items most were dinner items that we had already decided we wanted before we arrived. We ordered some appetizers, salads and dinner items and nothing came out the way it should have because the server put everything in at the same time. As disorganized as this place was and lacking food items early, on a holiday weekend was surprising to me being in the hotel restaurant business myself. When the manager Josh approached our table to see how things were going we shared our disbelief. Our meals did come and to their credit probably some of the best food I've ever had. The manager was nice enough to discount our bill and offered to have us come back which was a nice gesture. Despite the ups and downs I would have normally given this place a five, but because of the service and lacking major food items I only gave it three stars. I only wish the best for this restaurant and hope they make adjustments with their service staff and meal preparation.

Google
Wife ordered seafood pasta and it didn’t have any lobster claw meat as stated on the menu and very bland I ordered the duck while the breast of the duck was pretty good the leg was tasteless and dry. Roasted potatoes were just that. Roasted with absolutely no seasoning and the asparagus while tasty hadn’t been trimmed at all. Wife ordered the now or later cocktail and it was awful. This was our second and last time

Yelp
Fabulous service, great decor and atmosphere- locals and newcomers treated warmly and excellent menu!

Karyn K.

Yelp
Service questionable. We had to approach bar for cocktails already prepared. Okay then no Kettle One vodka. HORRORS!! Gray Goose acceptable. Fairly nice wine list. Ordered 2 steak salads and one chicken salads. Very good. We will try again as we know the owners

Sean L.

Yelp
Parmesan Grouper was an epic dish Vibes were chill Service was attentive Will definitely be back

Yelp
At the outset of this review, I will apologize for not including pictures. However, there are no pictures because the food disappeared before I could capture them in pictures!! I was there after a work meeting and when the group said we were going to a place with a set menu for our group, I was a bit nervous. We ordered the steak which was served with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. The steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection,. Every bite was tender and tasty! The asparagus still had a bit of crunch, just the way I love it. Even the mashed potatoes, which I normally do not eat, were scrumptious. Our server was awesome. He was so attentive, we felt like we were the only people in the restaurant. His service alone entice me to return for another meal. As for the atmosphere, we were located in their private room. The room was spacious and very comfortable. I will definitely return for a dinner for two, a small group meal with friends, and rent the private room for one of my groups. I highly recommend you do one or all of the these as well!! Come, check them out!!

Yelp
Very high quality restaurant with amazing food and great service. Hostess was enthusiastic, server was perfectly attentive. Friendly and engaging. The food was tops. Duck duo was maybe a top 10 in my life. Very unique.

Betts N.

Yelp
The food at Root is exceptional, the service and ambiance are wonderful! Will not disappoint! The Best of Georgetown!

Brad M.

Yelp
Used to be our favorite place. Great decor, menu and service. The last two times the food and service has been poor. Made a request to manager for a credit on a food item and it was declined. Not sure what has happened but we will not be back. I believe they are slowly going out of business and don't even realize it

Brian B.

Yelp
If you are looking for a fabulous place to dine to are very likely to be happy at Root. The bar guru Bas makes amazing cocktails and the food is just as good!!

Gina G.

Yelp
So we arrived at the restaurant at 7:45 pm tonight. Our server Dee was AMAZING! However in a mostly empty restaurant we somehow got behind a party of 14 people. Instead of management and the kitchen thinking "Huh, maybe we should fill the party of 6 first so they don't have to wait" they decided to make us wait and we waited for 2 hours. When they started finally bringing our food they had run out of the special I had ordered. The "management" (using that term VERY loosely) comped our one bottle of wine but no other alcohol. They did offer desserts but at 10:00 we were done. VERY understaffed and VERY poor kitchen management. The food was decent but you can DO BETTER ROOT. BTW Tony's Famous Pizza takeout for the win!!!!

Scott G.

Yelp
We had an appointment in Georgetown and found Root. It was our first time at this restrauant. Excellent food and great staff. We will be back and look forward to the next visit.

Janet T.

Yelp
Food and service were impeccable but the noise level was unbelievable and made having a conversation at our table almost impossible. A group of people drinking at the back of the bar were yelling and screaming with laughter while people at tables eating were barely speaking to each other. A lovely dinner was made very stressful because of sports bar level volume yelling and shrieking for the entire time we were there. Might be different at lunch but we won't be back for dinner.

Linda J.

Yelp
Fantastic dinner, awesome staff & great ambiance. After a long day of traveling, it was a perfect place to sit at the bar meet folks, have a drink and dinner! Bax, the bartender was very friendly!

Cara L.

Yelp
Always a favorite when we come to Georgetown. So many favorites on the menu, coming back to try some more this week.

Hector R.

Yelp
Opens at 4 PM. A Georgetown locals fave but on way back from Charleston if it's near opening time, that's where we stop for dinner. The atmosphere is quaint and laid back, the daily specials and menu selection from seafood to chops includes low country influenced creations by the chef. They also feature a happy hour and the bar is has ample space for groups. Overall the service is very good but can get a little slow on occasion. We like a couple of other spots in town but for dinner, this is number 1.

William E.

Yelp
Best meal I've had in a looooong time. Service was perfect. Portion was perfect for the price.

Steve H.

Yelp
I have heard good things about Root and despite being here for 5 years we haven't made it until tonight. Servers were fantastic, 5 *s for them. The appetizer (grilled peaches) sounded great; but .... little taste, the bread and cheese was overpowering. The main course was shrimp and scallops over a rubber / puff pastry that I was unable to cut. I ate all the shrimp, only half a scallop. I like my scallops cooked not cold in center. My wife was underwhelmed with her jambalaya, rice was undercooked, bland, not flavorful. Needless to say, I left a lot of food behind. Will not likely return.

Janet G.

Yelp
The Ambiance was very nice. Noise level was good. The service was very nice and everyone in my party enjoyed the food. I definitely recommend Root.

Kevin B.

Yelp
Dirty, slippery floors, horrible sle patience in every way, asked to speak to restaurant manager, and was told he was not available because he was in a meeting in the kitchen, our manager extremely rude

Yelp
Pictured is our waiter. We had to wait an hour and a half for our food which tasted good but the portion size was insanely small for how much it costed and definitely was not worth the wait.

Yelp
Had dinner at Roots last night (11/11/23). Four family members and we all agreed that Roots was the best restaurant we have experienced in South Carolina. The Appetizers were Imaginative and our meals were delicious. Service was professional. A must place to visit, We will be back. Tom Lacey tomlacey6@gmail.com

Yelp
When we walked in it looked very nice and upscale, but the hostess wasn't very friendly and the waitress was pretty clueless. She spilled a drink and didn't check in often. The meal took a LONG time to come out, even though it wasn't very busy. The food was mediocre at best. The signature chicken cordon bleu had no ham or asparagus. None. It was a very good chicken cutlet over mac and cheese though. The steaks were definitely not "chop house" quality. We learned about Root during a recent street fair and had very high hopes but unfortunately will never come back.

Yelp
Went on Easter as we were celebrating our anniversary a day early. Facility is nice. Large bar with booth seating in bar area, table seating in front and out back. Server was excellent. My wife got the salmon which she said was delicious. I got the seafood pasta of scallops, shrimp and lobster. The photo looked nothing like what was served. The photo showed nicely seared scallops browned on both sides while mine were plain white and even opaque. Not the way scallops should be cooked. The shrimp were fine. Again the photo made it look like the lobster was claw meat yet in actuality it was stringy red pieces. Unless told you wouldn't have known it was lobster. Not sure if I'll return.

Marty K.

Yelp
The food was severely overpriced for it's meh taste. $65 for a steak that is grizzly and fatty is ridiculous.

Latonya P.

Yelp
Root offers farm to table fresh fare sourced locally and it was delicious. Even though it was fine dining with a heftier price tag the portions were very generous which is unusual for these type restaurants. Our waiter was knowledgeable and took good care of seeing that our glasses were filled and we didn't need anything while dining. My hubby ordered the ribeye steak which came with fresh asparagus and mashed potatoes and I ordered she scallops - BIG and JUICY and FRESH as ever with mashed root veggies and fresh snow peas. The only reason I don't give it a 5 is my hubby's steak was somewhat tough; and full of gristle. We know a good steak when we meet up with one. LOL Our app were the Brussels sprouts and they were good in fact I could have done without the sauce (forget the name) but it didn't add much to the dish in my opinion. I favor a sweet balsamic touch or something a little on the sweet side to contrast the savory slightly bitter taste of the Brussels sprout. The real start of the show was the brown butter cake with vanilla gelato and fresh strawberries and fresh made cream - YUMMY and good for two to share. The place itself is trendy- with industrial/farmhouse touches and very welcoming. We were fortunate to come at just the right time as they strongly suggest reservations but we were able to be seated right away.

Yelp
We had just toured 13 plantations. We were pretty much spent. We just wanted a libation until the next phase of the tour so we stopped in. This cute place is on the waterfront in Georgetown, SC. We were welcomed and ushered to the bar. There was a nice variety of beers, wines, and cocktails. I opted for a Pluff Mud porter. Yes, I know that's not how Plough Mud is usually spelled but Plough Mud is not usually a really good dark beer. The venue was clean, dimly lit,and easy to carry on a conversation. We didn't check the menu for food items.

Yelp
We decided to visit George Town and window shop. We met a very friendly lady at one of the boutiques there, we asked her for a recommendation to have dinner, she recommended Root Restaurant. We decided to have dinner here. It has an urban feel to it upon entering. The host was pleasant as she showed us to our table. As we were viewing the menu, our server approached us and welcomed us, he went over the special dishes, however we decided to have the "Root Burger", and share, since we had a long drive ahead. Mind you, our server made a rather rude remark and said; "you made me go through all of that"?, I politely replied; "yes, we wanted to hear what you had to say". By the way, we requested our burger be medium well, which took approximately 40 min before we were served our dinner, to only have it more on the well done side. The staff does not seem particularly people friendly. Our server seemed a bit nicer after the fact he realized he was a bit rude initially. I don't believe we will be returning.

Martine K.

Yelp
We had just finished a 4 hour boat tour and were starving. For some reason this place caught our eye and we were glad we stopped in. Staff was super nice and Annie our server was great. Covid guidelines are being followed. We started with the Cheesesteak Egg rolls which were crispy and filled with meat. We really liked the sauce that was under the egg rolls and Annie brought us extra. I ordered the fried Shrimp po boy and my boyfriend got the Root Burger. My shrimp was very fresh and lightly battered. Both came with a side of rosemary French fries which were tasty too. We would definitely come back here.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Atmosphere was fantastic. Service was prompt and very knowledgeable of the menu. Food was outstanding. We have the meatball and grits and grouper bites for apps. Then filets, rib eye,and shrimp and grits entrees. Food came with salads. Just a wonderful meal. We will be back.

Melanee B.

Yelp
My experience here was pretty average. There weren't many customers in and our waitress still took forever to ask for our drink orders, then food orders was even longer. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, really was not a fan. I ordered the carbonara with chicken. It was average. The Brussels sprouts, I admit we're fantastic and the most memorable of the meal. Over all, the experience was average and not worth the price of the plates, which by the way are waaaaay overpriced for the small portion and average quality.

Jay S.

Yelp
So this place in Georgetown SC has to be one of the best restaraunts in the area. The food was out of this world. I got the best ribeye I've had in years. Served with roasted Brussels sprouts and and rosemary duckfat French fries that were to die for. My wife got the crab mac and cheese and she absolutely loved it. The staff was amazing as were the cocktails and wine. On Front St where all the fun shops, bars and restaraunts are. You can dock at the public marina which is what we did or drive on down Front St and just enjoy. By the way I cruised at about 28 mph and made it from Myrtle Beach in 1 hour and 35 min. A great overnight trip.

Rhonda T.

Yelp
Delicious, unique dishes and cocktails. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Favorite was the appetizer menu, yum yum!!!

Katie S.

Yelp
We were looking for a good farm to table restaurant open on Sunday. Since the reviews looked great, we figured we'd give it a try and drive 45 minutes. There was no wait at 12, we were seated and served water. I ordered a Bloody Mary. It was pretty good, your standard Bloody Mary (nothing farm to table about it). We finally had our order taken 10 minutes later, I ordered the shrimp toast and my husband ordered the wake up burger. It took around 45 minutes for our food to come out. Nothing special about the burger....did not taste farm to table like other places we've been to in the past. It was cooked well and fresh but nothing stood out. The fries did not taste like fresh cut fries that is something you would expect at a farm to table or local joint. The shrimp toast was mostly some saucy cheese spread with a hint of bread (that was toasted but now soggy) and some pieces of tiny shrimp (had to dig for it). The restaurant was decorated cute and had a calm atmosphere. It was clean. The town is a great place to visit as well! The server we had did not promptly refill water, check on us, or even ask how are meal was. The hostess did and was caught off guard when I told her it was not that great. This is not the best tasting farm To table experience I've had and the service was not worth the drive. Fire and smoke gastropub was far superior than this establishment. They could tell you where your food was sourced from and how it was made. Bottom line...it was ok but not the farm to table experience we were hoping for.

Yelp
Have I died and gone to heaven? Our anniversary dinner at Root was one of the best in our 19 years. Incredible atmosphere. Classy and casual at the same time. Relaxed and sophisticated. Excellent service. Incredible food. The brussel sprouts appetizer has some dark magic at work to make those things so addicting. My wife got the catch of the day - snapper and polenta with asparagus. It was nothing short of amazing. I was jealous until I dove into a perfectly cooked NY Strip that ranks among the top 5 I've ever had. I can't believe how amazing this place is, tucked away in little Georgetown, SC. I will find a way to come back for another anniversary dinner.

Chris R.

Yelp
Everything was cooked and presented wonderfully & was delicious. Addiction warning for the corn bread appetizer. The staff were very professional and pleasant. Can't wait to come back!

Kimberly S.

Yelp
We had the Brussels sprout with honey/sriracha which were delicious! My husband had the wake up burger and I had the stir fry-veggies over rice with shrimp which was very good. Zach was our waiter & he was really nice.

Frank G.

Yelp
Too bad, this place came recommended. We were the only 3 in the place for a late lunch. Scallops, only 2 maybe 3? Did not order it. Chicken salad, small pieces, asked for different dressing, oil and vinegar, was only OIL, they did not shake bottle, when I asked they said they did...not! Left most of it. You would think that they would have made it right...not! Very bad experience. Second star only because I liked the beer. Frank G

Sarah H.

Yelp
We stopped in for weekday lunch and the place was nearly empty. We were a little concerned. The lunch menu was light, mostly "handhelds" and salads. So we went with the pickle chicken sandwich and a classic burger and split them both. And to our great joy, everything on the plate was delicious. The chicken sandwich is perfectly battered and cooked, and topped with beautiful arugula the pickles had to be fresh pickled and the dark honey mustard was delicious! The burger was fantastic as well, especially the aioli. The fries were crisp and seasoned well. Everything was delicious!! We may even wander back down for dinner while we are in South Carolina.

Rick F.

Yelp
A relatively new addition to the Georgetown restaurant scene and man, they have hit a home run!! The food, the service, wine list and ambiance are all excellent. We had the peach salad (amazing!), the oysters Rockefeller (perfect) and the mussels along with a great Talbott Sleepy Hollow Pinot. Highly recommend this spot and wish them well!!

Stanley T.

Yelp
An added bonus I learned was the chef was the father to our wonderful hostess. You could tell when many restaurants cannot find caring staff the hostess constantly checked on us as did our waiter. Our food was wonderfully prepared and presented and the venue very nice. I love family run places. The pride shows through!!!

Jeremy B.

Yelp
Found this gem of a restaurant through Yelp. Sidnee was an excellent server. Very nice brunch menu for a Sunday morning! Restaurant was clean and just felt fun. Beautiful town to walk around!

Robert B.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots to eat at down here at the beach & Georgetown! We visit Pawleys Island once a year and we will always come back!! Big fan of Root, Jimmy and his staff are phenomenal!! Best service, amazing food, awesome drinks!! It doesn't get any better then this!!

James S.

Yelp
Dont think you are going to be all that without being ALL THAT! I say all this because its a nice looking place and appears to be well put together for the area. We came here on our way home from a trip to Charleston. Yelp had higher reviews so we were like, lets do it. We started with trying to get the Shrimp Toast but were told that due to the Gas Crisis, they did not get their shrimp in. Hold on, the Gas issue with was just announced the day before. So they did not have Shrimp in Georgetown the day after this issue was communicated...Hmmm..Ok, we then went for the Cheese steak Egg Rolls which I think were the best of the meal since it was hot and had a pretty good flavor. I opted for a Crab Mac and Cheese which would have been better if it came out hot. I am not sure if its just me but I am having a hard getting a hot meal...LOL..Good Flavor but it did not have much crab when the description does say it would be. Oh well, took the rest on the road with us but it ended up in the trash that evening. I hate throwing away food. My wife got the Grilled Chicken BLTA and Fries cooked in Duck Fat. Let me make sure we all know that means Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato with Avocado. She liked it but also noted both the fries and chicken were room temp. Please Please Please can we get hot food. Its not like there were a bunch of people there. We had about 3 other small parties eating at the same time. Service was a 1 star ALL THE WAY...This means we were seated and ignored for about 10 minutes. When we got someone to talk with us, we had to wait again and then flag someone down to get table wear. App came out and we were not given small plates...Just poor all the way around and again, we were 1 of 4 parties... If I've said it once, I will say it again, Devil is in the Details. The reason it was not lower than the 3 is because the food had good flavor and would have been real good if Hot. Best of Luck Root.

Kaley C.

Yelp
My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary dinner, and I was so happy! The waitress (glasses, some tattoos) was very sweet and attentive. He ordered the catch of the day, I got the curry shrimp dish. It was presented beautifully and tasted even better. A wonderful evening :)!

Bruce B.

Yelp
I get it. There's a shortage of people who want to work in restaurants. But. We had reservations at 7 sat down immediately didn't get dinner until 9. The waitress apologized too many times and was just ridiculously portraying herself as the martyr. The manager apologized as well but the excuse was that they had a large special event (wedding) going on. There was really no excuse for this. Two hours. We should have left but we were kept hanging with promises of soon. Manager took off the drinks and appetizers from the bill. Dinner was meh. Crab cake dinner.

Emily L.

Yelp
Delicious lunch stop! We had the Hawaiian flatbread, grouper fish and chips, grilled cheese with tomato soup, and a BLT wrap. Everything was so tasty and we saw the chef grab fresh basil from their garden for the sauces! Would definitely stop here again.

Ian M.

Yelp
Food is unbelievably good here. Seafood and cuts of meat are next level. Highly recommend this restaurant.

J B.

Yelp
Visited Root this evening for an excellent meal. Refreshing to have a restaurant with this type of welcoming atmosphere in town (even if it is somewhat hipster). Legit cocktails and they have good pours on their drinks. I can't think of a single complaint or negative thing to say about my experience there. That is truly rare to be able to say that about a place you visit. Remarkable to be able to say that about a place in their opening weekend.

Kathy J.

Yelp
Just perfect! Food was outstanding and service impeccable! We were in the second room which is a little industrial but fine. We will definitely be returning!
