"In a past life, this East Downtown building was a dingy punk squat and venue covered in graffiti where our staff may or may not have drank red wine underage. Now, it’s a posh, self-serve wine bar and bistro that plays Kaytranada remixes, which is either great for drinking in a big group or avoiding the conversation altogether. When you arrive, someone will open a tab and give you a key card. Pop the card into one of the slots on the wine wall, grab a glass, and select a one-, three-, or six-ounce pour of wine from whatever bottle you want. There are description cards, too, so technically you never have to speak to anyone if that's your speed. photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen" - Chelsea Thomas

Roots on the square in Georgetown had some good BBQ chicken pizza. The queso was okay, same with the burger. The live music was a little too loud (didn’t know he was going to be there) but overall pretty good spot.

Roots is in the downtown square of Georgetown in a building that is over 100 years old. Parking is challenging around the square, but it is worth finding a spot. The restaurant is a large open space with a second level balcony with additional tables and seating. We stopped by on a Thursday afternoon and there was only one table occupied, so plenty of open seating. There is a small stage by the front door, and I can tell that this place can get crowded, especially when they have live music. The menu has a great variety of choices, salads, appetizers, tacos, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza. I got the El Cubano sandwich, and my wife got the California Tacos with slow braised pork and a side salad. Wes, the restaurant manager, was friendly and talked with us about the food and history of the building and restaurant. We enjoyed talking with him and he is also clearly great in the kitchen because both meals were excellent! The Cuban sandwich had slow braised pulled pork and was topped with Swiss cheese, pickles, horseradish aioli, and Dijon on a Cuban roll. The pork was tender and juicy, and the Cuban roll was pressed, so the outside was slightly crunchy, perfect to hold in all the juiciness of the sandwich. I would definitely get this sandwich again. My wife loved her tacos. The salsa gave the right level of spices to take this taco over the top. She gave me a bite and I almost didn’t want to give it back to her! A lot of restaurants out there are making some type of taco plate, but this is one of the best tacos that we have tried. Even the side salad was excellent, and the ranch dressing was great. Wes told us that the dressing, like almost all items, are made in house. We can’t wait to come back and try the pizza, and also bring our entire family. If that is not enough to convince you to try Roots, let’s talk about price. The El Cubano sandwich was $12.00 and the California Taco plate was $10.50. This place is excellent value for your money, especially compared to other places in the Georgetown area. My wife and I spent more money on two subs at a sandwich shop than we spent here. I really give credit to Roots for working to keep prices reasonable while providing fresh and delicious food! Go to Georgetown square, find a parking spot, and go to Roots. Based on our experience, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Took myself for a solo date here. The pizza was great! Medium pepperoni 🍕 the music and atmosphere was fun and warm. Definitely will be back to try more. And def recommend!

Google
One of the best Pizzas I’ve tried in a long time!! The crust to perfection, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! The pizza and ingredients top notch! I was like 600 degrees down the street ain’t got nothing on this place! Glad I came and will make the drive to Georgetown just to eat here. Gonna try the tacos next time.

Google
Do not come here for the pizza. The pizza we ordered was raw. In the picture attached, that’s not the cheese- but the underside of the crust. Still dough-y and had little to no sauce. Pizza got thrown away. We have also tried to order the cheesecake twice and each time they’ve ran out and we’ve had to get a refund. I will say, the manager Wes, was very accommodating and offered to re-fire another pizza or give us a credit to use instead. I appreciated that.

Google
How have I missed this place living here 2 plus years! The pizza is so good. We just had the plane Jane pepperoni pizza (my kiddos don’t know anything different) and it was so good! The queso was good too! Loved the ambiance!

Google
A friend and I ate here at noon for lunch. I had the Tuscan sandwich and she had the Chix Club sandwich. They were both fabulous! Each came with a side and we both picked rosemary potatoes which were awesome as well. We will return definitely, maybe closer to evening as they have live music at night.

Google
Interesting building with a good vibe but the band on Thursday and Friday are seriously too loud. People were walking out. Asked server to suggest they lower volume but "no way". Food is ok. Why the cook (clearly not a chef) added balsamic vinaigrette to a curry chicken is ballsy or incompetence. Anyway didn't work for me.

Frankie L.

Yelp
It was a great lunch date with the wife It's going to be are place to unwind Can't wait to try there pizza

Maya T.

Yelp
This review is solely on the bar and drinks. Walked in and the food smelled amazing! I wish we didn't eat dinner so we could get a pizza. We just got drinks for the square. The bartender was very nice and put our drinks in to go cups. The atmosphere is very cute and down to earth. They even have live music, there was a band setting up to play.

Thania M.

Yelp
Roots is a must when visiting Georgetown, the most BEAUTIFUL Town Square in Texas...My go to is the kitchen sink... house made pizza sauce, fresh mozzarella, Canadian, bacon, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, red onions, red and green, bell peppers, artichoke hearts, black olives, mushrooms, garnished with baby leaf spinach. The dough firmly holds all those scrumptious toppings. A big shout out to Wes!! Took our order, engaged in conversation and brought our pizza to our table. Thank you Roots for 100% Food, Service & Ambiance!!

Michaela P.

Yelp
I knew we'd been here before! It hasn't improved much, but if you just order a pizza to go you'll get it in less than an hour. Tough to find a table downstairs. Upstairs is dirty. Can't believe they're still in business. Really nice folks.

Keasha E.

Yelp
Service was good, one guy seemed to be running everything (bar, taking orders, waiter), I got the trash can pizza (everything on it) tasted pretty good but got soggy quick probably due to all the toppings, my husband got the Korean tacos which he said were pretty decent. There was live music (Sunday afternoon) it was very loud and just ok. Lots of seating downstairs and up.

Jeff U.

Yelp
Food was good We sampled pizza and burgers Beer was ample choices Cannolis were tasty dessert Ambiance was nice Like an old country saloon But the temperature inside the business was awful So hot Sweating profusely I mentioned to the bartender it would be great to turn ac on and she just rolled her eyes and says Yes it's so hot I dunno if they are trying to save money or what but it would prevent me from visiting until January or so Open mic night Was kinda cool Wasn't a great experience but not terrible Sweaty though!

Laura Q.

Yelp
I love Roots!! It has a neighborhood feel to it. Its fin, the service is always good and they have great, fantastic pizza!!

Dana M.

Yelp
Well I was excited about trying this place. My cousin ordered through Uber. We both got different types of their burgers. We choose rosemary potatoes as our side. Both burgers were requested to be cooked medium. I also requested no veggies on mine. When they came both burgers were extremely well done to the point the meat was hard to chew. Neither or us got the potatoes and the just the other choice of chips. I know they read how we wanted our burgers because mine did not have any veggies on it. I will say the meat had a nice flavor but was so over done I ended up giving mine to the dogs after trying to eat about a fourth of the burger. We both threw the chips in the trash. Had high hopes but was very disappointed. I won't be ordering from them or going there.

Pat H.

Yelp
We had a pizza delivered and I can say we will not be ordering again!!! The crust was soggy and the pizza wasn't even hot or warm!!!!

Jessy S.

Yelp
I came here during the week to meet up with a friend and the place was pretty empty, they were going to have live music but I guess the guy didn't play till later on bc he started while we were leaving. Honestly seems like it would be a cool place to go for a chill dinner. I had the Baja pizza with the gluten free crust and it was soo good, next time I will try it on regular crust but I got gluten free bc that's the smallest size they had, it was kinda like a crunchy thin crust but still good ! Beers were great. Service was okay, We sat at the bar and they kinda took long to get our food order but its okay bc my friend & I were catching up! Overall, will def come by here again!

Netta K.

Yelp
Well, maybe everyone is tired from the week... It smells like burnt pizza, which they make pizzas so totally likely that is what happened. However, it was noxious!! The cups we were given for our drinks were gross dirty! They kindly wiped out new ones and gave them to us. The Dr Pepper wasn't hooked up, k ky carbonated water, the Lemonade was mostly water and the sweet tea was weak. $3 for waters Meatball sub- cheese and sauce was the perfect temp unfortunately the cold meatball made the sandwich gross. The Korean tacos were a bit anemic but flavor was good. This isn't our first time here and we will be back but hopefully we will have a better experience.

Russ C.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots on the square. For the $$... the pizza can't be beat!!!! Tuesday night Karaoke, and live music on the weekends.... Yes please!

Avery M.

Yelp
I've been a few times and enjoy this place. Our server Salim treated us very well and made the place feel like home. I took my grandparents here and they loved it. Theres a good selection of drinks and the pizza here is really good. We also enjoyed the live music. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Melissa J.

Yelp
Quaint fun place on the square with a down home feel Love the live music, karaoke nights too.. and get you an amazing pizza! Watch some football and have a drink!

Priscilla D.

Yelp
Don't recommend. Restaurant and bar area could use a good cleaning. Bartender wiping beer glasses with dirty towel and saw other towels in bar that were just as dirty.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
After walking by numerous times and commenting on how good the food smelled we finally stopped in. This is now our go to spot when all the other places on the square are packed with a wait. I hate to say that because it makes it sound like it is not as good as everywhere else. I think the bar vibe is what turns people away, but we enjoy it. We've had tacos, pizza, salads and sandwiches. All delicious. The staff are very nice and attentive. We love their sangria. It remains are regular place to stop on the square.

Shirley B.

Yelp
Great vibe in downtown Georgetown. Beers were cold, pizza was awesome-what more can you really ask for. We didn't catch any live music but next time we're in town, I'm suggesting we hang out here for some more of the above. We'll be back!!

Jason C.

Yelp
The owner here is amazingly sweet awesome lady. The food is always good, and the beer selection rocks! Did I mention you can get her beer to go to walk around?? A must visit on Georgetown town square!

Mildred A.

Yelp
My first time here but it was an in and out. There looks like they have live music, which is always a plus. It give another pizza option on the square. The pizza was actually quite good! I will definitely be going back!

Diana V.

Yelp
600 degrees had an hour and half wait and I wanted pizza so bad so thank god it was here! The Hawaiian was very good and fit the ticket. Great spot to get beer and pizza!

beth e.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while in Georgetown. We ordered the loaded nachos, which were okay. The chips were store bought and not the good kind. The chicken was dry and over cooked. We also had the soup of the day which was tomato basil. The soup had good flavor but was lukewarm.

Rafael W.

Yelp
Nice dive bar in downtown Georgetown. The food is great and watch out for ping pong balls from the second floor!

Priya S.

Yelp
We placed an order this past weekend through DoorDash and I was pleasantly surprised. We ordered their nachos vegetarian style and their margherita pizza, both were so yummy. I love that they're open late I believe we placed our order close to 9pm which was super last minute for us and I was surprised they didn't cancel. They have a large variety of food on their menu, I would love if there was more vegetarian/vegan options but the options that they did have were very good. Would definitely order from them again.

G T.

Yelp
I'd get give 3.5/5 stars. Food is good (not spectacular but worth going) and service is pretty good. Three reasons can't give a full 4 or 5 stars: 1. No A/C 2. The music is too loud (hard to hear conversation next to you) 3. The few live musicians I've heard weren't good. This isn't really the fault of the restaurant but it would be nice if they could bring in better.

Brian H.

Yelp
Best pizza in Georgetown. Best pizza in surrounding area, actually. 23 year old family recipe for the crust. What more can I say? If you haven't had it, you're missing out. I recommend the Texan.

Sarah D.

Yelp
I am giving this place a full 5! Ambiance is super relaxing. Come in in your favorite jeans and a T-shirt or dress up a little! It doesn't matter you're welcome anytime. Great beer menu good house wine. I love the music! Everything I listened to as a teen! Great pizza, I happen to like "not to much cheese" and they hit the mark. As you can see we loved it. as

Kennedy W.

Yelp
The food all came out completely room temperature. Three of us got burgers and they were very mushy and smelt extremely bad. I would definitely never recommend this restaurant and most certainly never recommend a burger from here. Even the Dr. Pepper tasted off... come on, it's Texas.

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Super fun place! I like to bring my kids to karaoke night. They love rocking out. Open mic night is super fun too, big variety of people and musical styles. The staff is friendly, quick, and the atmosphere there is very chill. All types of people. The pizza is better than 600 degrees! $2 Tacos on Tuesday (karaoke night) were surprisingly good too! I tried the nachos once & they would've been good, but they use a weird canned cheese instead of shredded cheese, so skip those unless you're a fan. Sodas have free refills & are yummy too.

Jeff O.

Yelp
Burgers and Pizza!!! Works for me when my kids can't agree. My son wants pizza and my daughter wants a burger. Food is great. My 7 year old son ate 3 slices of the large pizza pepperoni and pineapple. Normally never happens. Pizza is great. Bring the whole family.

Jeanne M.

Yelp
Best Margherita pizza. My husband really enjoys the Hero Gyro Sandwich. Friendly atmosphere and great service.

Shannon J.

Yelp
We chose this spot for the GF options. We liked the look of the inside, like an old saloon. The pizza was tasty! Couldn't tell it was GF. The nachos came out wrong and had a cheese sauce instead of melted cheese. Salads were filling. We sat outside even though it was hot bc of the smell of the inside wasn't pleasant. Haven't tried this place since living in Texas, but we see live music and it's always packed with families. Wish I would've taken pics of the pizza. We loved that the sign reminded us of Cheers sign.

Tamara F.

Yelp
We ordered pizza from this restaurant. The delivery was through DoorDash. The dasher delivered a wrong pizza. I called Roots Bistro to report the error. They said I had to contact DoorDash to have the issue corrected. I attempted to contact DoorDash through customer service on their website. The contact never went through and left the spinning ball of death for 15 minutes. I gave up on online support and called the customer service number. I have been on hold for 30 minutes so far. DoorDash sucks and the restaurant isn't making it right. Very disappointing!!!!

Christopher D.

Yelp
I'll be honest; when my wife suggested we stop in here as we were looking for a spot to eat, I was a little hesitant - from the street it looked a little rough, like an escapee from Sixth Street, but thank heavens I listened to her, went in, and enjoyed myself immensely. You should go too. The Bistro name had me a little confused, but don't let that stop you. What I found was a cozy, worn-down little place filled with couples, singles, families and yes, even a few teenagers, just hanging out enjoying the solid food and good drinks. There was even a three-piece band playing (no cover but make sure you fill that tip jar) the night we stopped in. Order at the bar, pick a seat and your server will deliver your pizza, sandwich, salad and drinks soon. Downstairs seating and a second-floor wrap around balcony with more seating and maybe some games: not sure about that as I never went upstairs. Prices are very fair, the beer is cold (and openers are attached to posts around the room so you can open your own) and the wine selection is small but good. How good were our burgers? We still can't stop comparing them as the standard when we go to other places. And the people? Friendly, down to earth and happy to see you. Look, Roots is not going to win any awards for its menu or architecture, but if you've had a long week and want to hang out at a happy, comfortable spot where everybody gets to be whoever they are (and the food is good!) this is a damn good choice. Stop in, say hi and have some fun. And tip the band.

Dustin N.

Yelp
Nice spot! Very welcoming staff and atmosphere! The music was a perfect way to top off a great night of pizza and drinks, surrounded by just the right amount of people... all having an awesome time! Smiles all around... definitely coming back!

Miale S.

Yelp
Manager called and made our bad experience so much better! We appreciate the attention to taking care of our concerns.

Terianne S.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere, hope to come back during live music! Food was good and flavorful. Taco Tuesday is totally worth it ($2 Tacos)! We will definitely be back and bring friends!

Billy S.

Yelp
Our go to place on the square. Amazing food. Awesome beer selection and the staff is top notch. Best pizza around. Great music.

Norma W.

Yelp
I love going here when West and Vicky are working but I just walked in tonight and got the worst treatment from the middle age lady with brown hair. I'm so sick of the ups and downs of this place. Get rid of the bad people and let the good people work more!

Alicia D.

Yelp
Awesome old building, long low and dark. Beautiful hanging gallery seating upstairs. Lots of beers on tap and a well balanced menu of pizza, sammiches, salads. THE PIZZA!!!!!!!!!! THE CRUST CRUNCHES WHEN YOU BITE IT!!!! Also totally delicious. Charmingly creepy back patio. I will drive back up here from Austin for this pizza. Oh, we got The Texan. Perfect ratio of sauce to to crust to topping. Amazing pizza. And the chef is was super nice, and dare I say, handsome!

Christie G.

Yelp
Hubby and I went here with a friend. Had a great experience. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because their fountain drink machine had limited choices and two of them were out of order. The owner is super friendly. The menu has a lot of options. Of course I opted for the BLT, no mayo. This lovely sandwich is served on a French roll and I got their homemade kettle chips. Hubby and friend got burgers. Hubby's side was French fries and friend got a side salad. We would definitely go back to this quaint restaurant. Maybe to see and hear the local talent.

Christina G.

Yelp
First and last time here. Not my style. Dark, old location. Live music was great, but the entrance was crammed with the stage on one side and make shift sound booth on the other side. Lots of seating, but crammed. First time here, not sure where to go. So we walked up to the bar to order lunch, there was a woman there, we were not greeted, just looked at. Did not feel very warm and or welcome. We ordered. Our food was brought out to us in a timely manner, we were not given utensils or napkins. I go back up the bar - not greeted. A guy comes from the back, looks at me like "what do you want", I ask for utensils. He points to them on the backside of the bar, like I was supposed to just know that they were there! Well, I had no clue. The beer was ok, the pizza was ok, the service was lacking, the music was great, the bathroom was sketchy.

Eva Maria T.

Yelp
We've been meaning to check out Roots for quite some time. What took us so long!? We went on a Sunday around 3pm. Surprisingly it wasn't crowded, it's football season and they have plenty of big screen TV's showing the games. They had a "Help Wanted" sign in the window. That being said, we knew they may be understaffed and we weren't in a hurry. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar. They have a good selection of craft beers and wines. We ordered the Kitchen Sink Pizza minus bell peppers, an IPA and a Blonde. I'm a certified "pizza Snob" meaning normally we ask for a box for leftovers. Well there was not a crumb left! The crust was the perfect combination of crunchy/chewy, toppings were super fresh. I also like that they put the spinach on after baking as opposed to before. This keeps the spinach fresh vs burned and crunchy.

April H.

Yelp
We moved her about 1 year ago and didn't find this place till today. Got "to go" food but by far they have the best pizza in Georgetown! Perfect crust and fresh ingredients! We had the texas pizza and Kitchen sink pizza and both were amazing! Fresh basil even! Pure Perfection.

Meagan H.

Yelp
The person who brought out the food was not wearing a mask and was not socially distanced. They aren't requiring masks to be worn. The table was dirty. They have guests reuse pens without sanitizing. We tried the pizza, a BLT, and tacos. The food wasn't remarkable. We went because the reviews were so good, but after being there I have no idea why they have good reviews. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. I'd call it a bar and not a restaurant. It'd be okay if you wanted to drink beer inside in a bar environment and listen to music, but I would not recommend for dinning. We don't plan on returning.

Theresa N.

Yelp
Live music playing on a small stage added to the fun atmosphere. Sitting at the bar was much cooler since there are fans right above the bar. There's an upstairs to the right of the bar as you come in. You have to look for it. Usually a line for the one bathroom that is downstairs but I was told last night there is a bathroom upstairs too. Really really good pizza. Wonderful crust. Back patio, seats about 20 people but your view is brick walls. Still,it's lovely out there.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Tacos on a Sunday, not too bad. I heard this place is great on Tuesday nights with happy hour discounts for dontchaknow: Tacos. Would really be all about coming in here on a music night. I ordered the California Tacos because it's pretty obvious that bringing in stuff from the other Republic means so much. Let's get real, it was just some Texas Pulled Pork and Avocado on top and it remained delicious. I forgot what beer I went for but that was just as well. For a music joint that is in a quaint small town square it's solid.

Karissa A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Had a pizza and it was really good. Shared it between 3 of us and it was a great size. Their alcohol is also decently priced. We haven't been on a weekend yet, but we plan to check it out when they have live music. Their pizza menu is similar to other joints in the area, but it still very good (although, as a northeasterner, I haven't found my go to pizza spot yet). What makes it enjoyable is that Roots has other options on the menu as well, beyond appetizers, so it's well-rounded enough for friends who don't want pizza.

Joey G.

Yelp
You get there, the first thing you do is wait in line. The few times that I've been there, the food has come out pretty quickly. The pizza is great, and not bad to take home. But I had their Cuban sandwich, and it is amazing. My wife had the reuben, and she said hers was pretty good too. We went there one time on taco tuesday, and I was surprised at how good the tacos were. I grew up on tacos. I'm not a big fan of a lot of Austin favorites. This place has great tacos on tuesday. It's karaoke night, so be prepared. The live music is hit or miss. I've been there when there's some amazing live music. I've also been there and wondered why this person is on stage. I judge a place by their service, and the services great. You just have to know how to order. Remember, when you get there wait in line.

Kenny G.

Yelp
Absolutely over the top service the chicken salad sandwich is amazing and the brew is fantastic. Katy our server is amazing. A don't miss experience!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while. Food is still great! We got the cheese board, hamburger and a salad! All great choices! I got a beer on tap- can't remember name but they allowed me to taste first- it was a citrusy beer- very good! Only negative was service, we were upstairs and they kept forgetting stuff we asked for- extra dressing, silverware, to go box.
