I brought my coworkers here to experience their very first drag show, and while there were definitely some amazing moments, a few things left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.
When you go to a drag brunch, let's be real, you're not really there for the food. It's all about the vibes, the Queens, and a few good drinks with your crew. We arrived early and decided to head to the downstairs bar to pregame before the show started.
Unfortunately, that's where things got off to a rocky start.
From the moment we walked up, it was clear the bartender was having a rough day. He seemed frustrated, barely acknowledged us, and gave off a very "don't talk to me" energy. We stayed positive and eventually got someone's attention to place our order.
About 10 minutes later, two drinks were placed in front of us, but when we tasted them, we realized they weren't ours. The bartender realized it too, said he'd make the correct drinks now, and took them back. But instead of tossing the drinks (we had already touched them!), he passed them along to the guests who originally ordered them.
Yikes. That alone was enough to make me uneasy.
Another 10 minutes passed, still no drinks. When we checked in, the response was something like, "Oh I forgot, I'm so busy, blah blah blah..." Said with zero care, and plenty of attitude. We gave up and asked for a refund.
Thankfully, once we made it upstairs, the energy completely changed. The staff was super friendly, we got our drinks quickly, the vibe was fun and welcoming and it was exactly what we came for. When we got seated for the show, I was excited, we had what I thought were the best seats in the house.
Unfortunately, the large party next to us kept blocking our view by pulling chairs into the aisles. It made it really hard to see the show, which was disappointing. Huge shoutout to the Queen who was hosting the event, they genuinely tried to manage the situation and keep things fair, I appreciated that more than I can say. You could tell that area wasn't meant for that many people, but the party just kept growing. I don't blame Roscoe's for that, but it did take away from the overall experience.
That said, the Queens delivered! They brought the energy, the glam, the laughs, and truly saved the night. Sharing my love for drag with my friends, and watching them enjoy themselves too, made it all worth it.
I gave this 4 stars instead of 3, purely because of how much fun we had once the show started -- and because the upstairs team totally redeemed the day. But that downstairs bartender?
Absolutely not it.
