I wrote a review of the Hillsdale Food Cart Pod as a model of spreading the food cart movement to more suburban environments and a wider population of eaters. Rose City joins that philosophy in providing a spacious and welcoming pod that can appeal to a broad audience.
This is a review of the pod and not the individual carts. You can read those as you like.
Portland has pods niched to lunchtime office workers, grab after work-take home dinners, late night clubbers, weekend strollers, the brunch wait challenged, students and more. Some have beer and wine too. Some have impossible parking, challenging parking, bike parking and no parking. There are variations on waste handling from overflowing trash containers to well considered thinking about waste. Occasionally you will find music, and often you will find the neighbors have declared war on the music and won.
Rose City has a nicely "L" shaped layout. They have a leg fronting on busy Sandy, but almost all of the pod is behind the Sandy businesses and next to a nicely muralled retaining wall. For vehicles, the pod and some parking is accessible by a narrow street off Sandy.
Some of the carts have their own seating and there is common seating at picnic tables under canopies. The time I visited, there was a singer songwriter doing low volume covers under one canopy with seating.
Rose City has done one thing unique. Every vendor has committed to compostable or washable packing-plating for eat-there or take-home. That means all the disposal is in one compost bin.
There is a cart with a barn structure licensed for beer and wine which can be consumed seated under any of the covered areas. There were about half a dozen micros available. That beer was served in washable plastic glasses.
I was struck on a Friday dinner time by the family-friendly atmosphere, perhaps due to the proximity of the Laurelwood day care center nearby. Parentals and kidentals come from near and maybe far. And for those kidlets, it's a great introduction to the possibilities for cart food.
Of the two carts I sampled, and perhaps a review awaits, I would not say the spices were strong. But maybe that's what this pod wants to be.
I did visit the Kruger's produce market and I have to laud it. I am a student of produce and I enjoy produce shopping. In Portland early August season, Krugers has a range of prices, but always excellent quality. Some prices are super bargains. Some are a little higher than cheaper competitors with huge market power. So I would recommend shopping at Krugers, who can never, and shouldn't ever, try to beat loss leader produce sellers, but sometimes does!
Rose City is a well curated food cart pod that is family friendly and welcoming to everyone of any age who wants to experience Portland's food cart culture.
