Ask Eater: Where to Find Taylor Ham and Classic Breakfast Sandwiches in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"As far as tasty breakfast sandwiches that won’t break the bank, we’re partial Rose Donuts in Linda Vista, the friendly, family-run mainstay where locals along with students from the nearby USD campus line up at all hours of the day for breakfast sandwiches built on toasted bread, croissants, or bagels." - Candice Woo

The staff here are always friendly and the donuts are the best in San Diego! The earlier you go the better the selection!

Google
The breakfast bagels 🥯 and croissants 🥐 are great. MY Favorite are the CHEESE DANISHES, the cheese actually tastes like cheese and not just sugar goo!!! So lucky they are right around the corner from where I live 😜

Google
My all time favorite donut shop since childhood!

Donuts a bit soggy, but friendly staff. Sign says mocha, but no mocha.

Visited Rose donuts for the first time today. Ordered the chicken salad sandwich with everything and 2 donuts; 1 glazed twist and 1 maple glazed with bacon. The sandwich is a solid 8 on a scale from 1-10. No complaints there, all the veggies super fresh, crisp cold lettuce, lots of pickels, perfect croissant which was toasted so it was crisp and flakey on the crust. A really good sandwich! I could even go up to a 9 on it. Now the glazed twist which is my go to choice for donuts. Light, soft, super fresh tasting. Really good. But the super star was that maple bacon. Oh 👏 my 👏 goodness 👏 !!! Donut, super soft, fluffy, fresh...maple, perfectly sweet, not overly sweet. Nice real maple flavor; the bacon, perfectly crisp and the bacon ratio was perfect! Perfect balance of salt to sweet. Did I mention it was perfect? Well it was. PERFECT!!! Go here. Get the bacon maple donut. You're welcome.

Google
I used to like this place alo and the employees. Have always been friendly. I’ve been going there for over a year now and I’ll order a donut every once in a while. It’s the same one on every time. A coconut cake donut. I asked and pointed to the coconut one I wanted and when I got to the car it was the wrong one. I wouldn’t have minded to pay for a new one. However, the lady that was once so nice tossed it in the trash and her attitude towards me has not been the same. We walked in this morning no donuts in sight and an attitude with it. Now we go to Christy’s. No more rose.

Google
I’ve had a few times and they are very tasty. However, the large cinnamon roll today was doughy on the inside.

Google
The food was horrible. I ordered a sausage and cheese croissant. I got a crummy hot dog without cheese instead. And the donuts were also crummy. The three o got..one buttermilk with chocolate, one buttermilk glazed and one round chocolate which amounted to a glazed donut with a little bit of frosting smeared on top. All three tasted exactly the same. Very disappointing.

Yelp
First time coming here and can say it'll be my last. Order a ham & cheese -1/10 it was disgusting, the smell of it was horrible. Wanted an ice coffee & got the vietnamese coffee literally horrible. The service wasn't the best, young lady was giving an attitude the whole time since the moment we talked in. Only good thing about this experience was the donuts.

Yelp
A family favorite! I love taking my kids here on the weekends. Familiar neighborhood feel. Close knit, not commercial. If you're looking for Duncan or Krispy - this ain't it. But if you're into flavor and actual pastries, this is the spot. Also, employees = the best.

Yelp
I ordered from this business via Yelp/Grub Hub on my way to my new job thinking they were the Rose Donuts near my work. When I went to pick up, they didn't have the order and said that there was another Rose donuts (in clairemont). I immediately called to let them know that I was not able to pick up and they said they couldn't cancel bc it was through Grub Hub and to call them. I called Grub Hub who then called Rose Donuts to verify and they told them I had picked up my order. I texted/called them to please call Grub Hub and received no response. I just think this is a terrible way to treat people!!

Yelp
ooooh this place was so yummy! Stopped in on my way to work to surprise some co-workers and these did not disappoint. A dozen was very reasonably priced (although I wish i spent more time picking out the ones I wanted instead of letting them choose, just because I don't really like the plain powdered option). Service was so friendly at 8am too!

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood donut shop. Every time I visit I'm always greeted with a smile and excellent customer service. The donut selection is exactly what you would expect. No crazy donut flavors, but sometimes all you want is a chocolate twist or a maple bar. Rose's donuts are always fresh delicious! The cost is very reasonable. There's plenty of parking. And they also offer croissants and beverages. Rose donuts is a neighborhood donut treasure!

Yelp
Yummy donuts. I especially enjoyed the apple fritter - I went close to closing and got the last one! Looking forward to grabbing a few donuts next time I am in the area.

Yelp
Their donuts are the best in San Diego!!! The breakfast sandwiches are better than the donuts. Greta place definitely recommend

Yelp
Family run business and located in a shopping complex across from Mesa College on one side and Starbucks on the other street. Came here to get some donuts and coffee. Ended up with a couple muffins, apple fritter and glazed donuts. This place is open early and they are still busy in the back making donuts. This place is super super busy, we sat in the parking lot to eat our scrumptious and rich breakfast... amd watched all the customers come.and go with boxes full of donuts.. i did order the Vietnamese coffee but it was too strong for me and I gave it to my SO to finish. The apple fritter was moist and delicious. My son didn't care to much for the glazed donuts but enjoyed the muffins. A bit on the pricer side, but that is the inflation.
google avatar

Yelp
Why do American donuts have to be so jaw numbing sweet??? But if that's your jam, these were good. I got the long John and the apple fritter to try and they were both very fresh. The apple fritter could have had more apples but the batter was very crunchy and delicious. There was a big selection and most were priced at $1.50 each. Service was very friendly, fast, and the place was clean. $0.50 charge for all credit card transactions under $5. Although they weren't life changing, they were certainly good and deserves a visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
Everything is good, place is nice and clean plus the staff is very friendly. I always order ham n cheese and turkey n cheese with glazed donut and a coffee for breakfast. That's how i start my morning weekend.
google avatar

Ada M.

Yelp
They close early 12pm. Not donut shop I would want to visit again because they were rude and only few ugly looking donuts left. Dont waste your time coming here at 11am or almost close because they don't have any good donuts left.
google avatar

Yelp
My son and I usually go to Starbucks on Wednesdays but today the two near us were super busy. I suggested we go to Rose Donuts instead. He liked that idea. I knew they would be closing soon and might not have a lot to choose from but we lucked out, they had glazed twists and a chocolate twist. I got a lightly powdered donut for my oldest son. We also got iced coffees. I thought they were small for $5 but they are very good so no complaints. Our treats were fresh and delicious. Rose Donuts has been here for many years and I have fond memories of my Dad getting donuts for us on the weekends and going with my kids for an afternoon treat. I wish they were open later but am happy they are there.

Yelp
Amazing, I sincerely love coming here. I always appreciate local shops, they give out a homey and welcoming vibe. Donut always taste amazing!

Yelp
Every time we visit the staff is so nice, patient, and helpful. We've never had a bad donut! Haven't had their drinks so I can't speak for them, but the donuts are 10/10. Get there early in the morning to try the strawberry cream cronut (croissant/donut)! It's out of this world, not overly sweet either which is a big factor for me.

Kris M.

Yelp
Awesomeness!!! Great assortment of donuts and pastries. Coffee was delicious! They have regular coffee; as well as, Thai and Vietnamese choices. Worth the stop for all donut lovers!
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
I love donuts....almost to a fault. Apple fritters are my favorite and sometimes it's hard to find a good apple fritter. Imagine my surprise to see that they have regular sized apple fritters here (which are big) and small ones. I got the small one because I didn't want to eat 1000 calories for breakfast. It was fresh and delicious. I also got a few donuts for my family. Everyone enjoyed their donuts that morning. I'd also like to add that the lady working there was super friendly and nice. I will be back.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast with my cousin who was visiting from out of town- we loved our blueberry cake donut, the chocolate filled and sugar twist. She got the everything bagel with cream cheese and bacon- it was delicious, but coming from the east coast, the bagel was small. We got Vietnamese iced coffees- they were very bitter, not as good as others in the area.

Yelp
Cute donut spot in a very convenient plaza. It's opened until noon, so the earlier you go, the fresher the donuts. I stopped by for half a dozen donuts and their famous strawberry cronut. The cronut is like nothing I've ever tasted! VERY DELICIOUS! The donuts are good as well, but like I said, the earlier, the fresher. So make sure you're not getting the fluffy donuts at noon, because they might not be as fluffy. Aside that, it's a great donut stop! Support small, local businesses.

Yelp
Shopping local led us to this spot. Absolutely AWESOME shop! We picked up a dozen doughnuts and coffee. The donuts were amazing and coffee was perfect! The two ladies helping us were super nice and made the whole experience that much better. Family owned feel and they appreciate you as a customer. Will be back for sure! Lots of parking out front Covid rules apply, masks required, social distancing enforced and hand sanitizer available. No sitting inside. Order for pick up, at the counter or one of the online delivery services can pick up for you.

Yelp
Great donuts, great service! My family has been going here for years - would absolutely recommend!!

Yelp
I stopped by Rose's Donuts not only to support local businesses, but to pick up some scrumptious croissants. This is a popular spot for doughnuts, for good reason because they do make a good product. As a result, you have to get here early for availability of premium goodies. Luckily for me, there was still some croissants when I stopped by. The croissants were quite good. They were not your typical buttery French croissant, but rather something of their own. These croissants are puffier and larger, not that I am complaining because they are perfect for making croissant sandwiches at home. I like to warm mine up in the toaster oven to enjoy with a cup of coffee. The croissant had light crust and a very soft center. They are set up for to go only at this doughnut shop.

Yelp
Rose Donuts is making amazing donuts served by a group of uber friendly employees. The hubby and I walked in a Saturday morning and picked up a few donuts. We each got a small apple fritter which was was fried, had a nice crisp edge and was soft and supple in the middle. I then ordered a raised glazed yeast donut that was pillowy, not overly sweet and melted in my mouth. The hubby ordered a powdered filled donut with lemon curd. Very delicate as well and a nice tang to it with the lemon. They're inexpensive, fresh and delicious donuts. Stop by and pick up a couple or dozen if you're in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
The glazed donuts are the best. It's like Krispy Kreme but better. Donut is bigger but so so soft and pillowy. We come back here just for this. We tried a few other donuts and it was just ok

Yelp
The family that runs this business is super nice. Every time I've come in, they are friendly, smiling, and always thank me for my patronage. They also have another location down near USD. The donuts are always fresh and of course on the sweet side, but not overly so like some places (ahem... Krispy Kreme and Dunkin). The place usually has clean tables and appears well maintained. This place has been around for a long long time and was very popular even before K Sandwiches came around. They have loyal regulars and the family knows their regulars. Not uncommon to hear them call customers by first name and ask if they want their usual order. I stopped by a few weeks ago and after placing an order, realized I had forgotten to stop at the ATM (they are cash only). I walked to my car and grabbed my emergency stash of cash and came back to pay. The owner was super nice (as always) about the transaction. In recent days, the business has been closed (understandably). The owner lives nearby and apparently there was a home invasion robbery and the owner passed away. Condolences to this wonderful family... very sorry for your loss. I really hope they catch the person or people responsible. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/story/2019-04-09/victim-dies-days-after-apparent-home-invasion-attack-in-clairemont

Yelp
Wonderful ladies in here this morning - kind and attentive. The donuts were fresh and fluffy and my kids enjoyed them! Great little shop!
google avatar

Yelp
Best donuts in town! This is the only place we buy donuts from. The staff is friendly and helpful and the donuts are amazing. Lots of parking and seating inside if you want to enjoy your donuts there. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick donut and coffee run on our way out of town early on a Sunday, staff, service, coffee and Donuts are great.

Yelp
Our son is sick at Radys down the street and mom and I needed to get some coffee and wash our couple of changes of clothes that we had so I was using the laundromat right next door. I saw the donut shop and texted mom to see what kind of donuts she wanted and walked over to break a $20 bill I had. I walked in and was greeted by the owner Mari, I said Goodmorning would you be able to break this for me? And she proceeded with a snarky comment saying are you buying? I'm not just going to break it just because while laughing. As if it costed her anything to give me change . After the very rude reply and completely unprofessional attitude I decided I didn't want any donuts and I was still able to break that 20 inside the laundromat. FIND ANOTHER SHOP! One that appreciates their customers and isn't desperate to sell donuts so they force you to buy if you want to simply get change.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
I've enjoyed Rose Donuts over the years when they have been brought into my work. Now with the pandemic and only individually packaged goodies allowed for sharing in break rooms, donuts are a reminder of the good ol' days. They were open on Thanksgiving morning and we couldn't resist the sweet temptation to go with our Thanksgiving feast cooking fuel (aka coffee) from Starbucks across the street. I'm ashamed to tell you how many goodies we tried before our big Thanksgiving meal, but I will say that the blueberry cake donut was our favorite. The strawberry cronut was also delightful. And the perfectly fluffy glazed donut holes are certainly worth mentioning. Rose Donuts is definitely a local treat!

Yelp
The staff is super friendly, helpful, and patient. The donuts, muffins, and croissants, most especially, were delicious and helped power me through many early mornings that began in the Sharp Mary Birch NICU while don spent nearly 16 weeks there. It became part of my routine that gave my upturned world some stability and a tasty treat for the commute to work and mid-morning snack. I recommend their confections any and every day. Top selections: Butter croissant Maple Bacon donut Cronut (available on Friday) Blueberry muffin Chocolate croissant Lemon-raspberry muffin
google avatar

Eddy L.

Yelp
They never have any Donuts after 11am. This is a common occurrence since pre-COVID going to school at Mesa
google avatar

Yelp
I heard about Rose Donuts several years ago from an enemy LOL I forgot the conversation but somehow a group of people were talking about M & M Donuts in Anaheim and how they have blueberry donuts and this girl said that you can get blueberry donuts locally in San Diego at Rose Donuts. I was never really on the hunt for blueberry donuts but I frequent the plaza often to go to K Sandwiches and I always noticed Rose Donuts near it. I finally went for the first time last week and I hate that I put off my visit for so long! First of all, it's cash only so make sure you have some on you before going. Their blueberry donuts are $1 each and that includes the tax. I also got a Vietnamese Iced Coffee $2.95 which is authentic tasting and better than most boba shops. The blueberry donut was BOMB! it was so delicious! It was soooo sooooo fresh! I love how the cake donut has a slight crunch to it and the glaze was delicious! I loveeed it! I've been back twice already within one week and I'm planning to come back again very very very soon! haha I just need to withdraw cash haha!

Brexton P.

Yelp
Not many local donut shops in San Diego. And many I've been to haven't been very good. Rose Donuts is an exception. Donuts are very good, breakfast croissants are great, service is great. A little pricey but worth it if you want a good donut. I routinely go here weekend mornings.
google avatar

Serena L.

Yelp
I got Strawberry cream cheese, giant glazed, Strawberry Creme Cronut, chocolate Glazed Donut, sugar donut, poppy seed Muffin, regular Glazed Donut, fruity pebbles cereal donut, Ham and Cheese Croissant The donuts here are amazing! So light and fluffy and the glaze is not overly sweet! They have the classics along with some more special donuts. You can even get a bouquet of donuts haha My favorite was the giant glazed donut. Despite the size, it was still light and fluffy throughout. The strawberry and cream cronut had so many flaky layers and so beautiful. Come by and support this small/local business!! Highly highly recommend!
google avatar

Nadia S.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this donut place after seeing the Yelp reviews and the photos. Low and behold it's just like any other donut place. Nothing really stands out about it. The donuts aren't really creative and when we arrived on the weekend the speciality donuts weren't even made or available. The waitress was also a bit distracted. Maybe you'll have a different experience?
google avatar

Joey W.

Yelp
Don't even bother to come to this donut shop. Never have donuts available!! 10 am and a couple of donut holes and a glaze donut or two and some muffins.
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Got here just before 11 am on a Saturday so maybe they were sold out of a number of things as display case was about half full. The apple fritter was delicious and worth coming back for. The donuts with sprinkles seemed a ok to the kiddo. If we're back in the area, I'll try some of the other options.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
The employees are nice but unfortunately the donuts are not fresh . I believe they are made the day before...sad the days of warm soft donut goodness are gone ...
google avatar

L M.

Yelp
Delicious donuts. Since the change in ownership, it's hard to get my favorite ex-large glazed or chocolate donuts, was told they only make a few that sell out quickly and early.

Alyssa R.

Yelp
This is my favorite donut place ever. The staff is so welcoming and the donuts are phenomenal. I would recommend the turkey and cheese croissant or the ham and cheese croissant. It is delicious! This will always be my go to donut spot.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and the donuts are wonderful. Unfortunately this is the 2nd time I've received a croissant that was not fresh. There is a flakiness that comes with fresh made croissants and this is not it. Also, both times the woman behind the counter tried to put it in the microwave without me asking for it to be heated. For a $3 croissant I'm hoping it would be fresh and made the morning of.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I just ordered some turkey egg and cheese croissants from this place through Grubhub this this is what they sent. There's no egg in these things who's was left in the special instructions and there was barely any meat in it. I paid $31 for this?? Never again
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
The best donuts in a ten mile radius, and not bougee prices of other obnoxious unique donut places. A must to satisfy donut cravings. Also has a wide menu with breakfast bagels, bagels, coffee, tea.

Kenneth B.

Yelp
Great breakfast sandwiches! Huge donuts. Friendly staff and quick service. Long lines but worth the wait.
google avatar

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
Rose donuts is one of the few donut shops that serve HUGE freshly made donuts! This shop is located in the same shopping cienter asfmtr K Sandwich in Kearny Mesa. If I'm not mistaken they opened at 6am. Parking is no problem. Beware ge is a CASH ONLY establishment!!! Rose Donuts serve thge by best and largest Apple Fritters for ONLY $2!!
google avatar

Naomi C.

Yelp
Went at 10am and there was a bunch of donuts. We got a Boston cream, maple, some donut holes and a pink fruit loops one. All of them tasted fresh and were very delicious! The employee today was super nice as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh, delicious and a friendly smile. Made my daughter's day after a tough morning at Rady's hospital which is really close by.
google avatar

Chrissy F.

Yelp
Personally, I've never stepped foot into this establishment. However, patients & co workers always bring boxes of donuts to share. I just want to say that these donuts are always delicious and FRESH. Love them
google avatar

Tracie M.

Yelp
This place has been around forever! Small Mom & Pop shop with really good donuts. I love the bear claw and apple fritter. Couple there is always so nice and likes to crack jokes. My coworker loves their Vietnamese Iced Coffee and will go here up to 3 times a week for it. Located in same strip mall as K Sandwiches but in the other end by the laundromat. Parking can be a challenge during peak hours.
