"A Newton staple for almost half a century, Rosenfeld’s opened in 1973, when its namesake Mark Rosenfeld decided to give up a career in law to make bagels. Over time, the shop became a destination for families all over Boston, and it now serves more than 20 types of bagels, bialys, several spreads, smoked fish, and more bagel accoutrements. The bagels are nicely crusty on the outside and soft and slightly chewy inside." - Valerie Li Stack, Dana Hatic

"Hidden in a tiny basement in Newton’s Piccadilly Square, Rosenfeld’s is a Jewish bakery paradise. Bagels by the dozen, chocolate and cinnamon babka, challah, and copious amounts of smoked fish and schmear, Rosenfeld’s has been doing it all in the same tradition for 50 years. (So, no, you won’t find jalapeño bagels here.) The bakery was opened in 1973 by Marc Rosenfeld, and is now owned and operated by Mike Lombardo. Rosenfeld’s continues to produce freshly boiled bagels with a perfectly chewy interior in all the classic varieties like marble rye, sesame, and potato. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Rosenfeld’s is known for their famous whole wheat challah, bialys, and specialties such as hamantaschen and round challahs during the high holidays." - Katie Draisen

Yelp
This place rocks. My family's favorite bagel shop. They have a nice shell and chewy on the inside. It's a small interior so very crammed and a bit hectic when busy but the line moves. A bit more than $1 per bagel when ordering a dozen which I think is reasonable. My favorite is the pumpernickel and the bialy.

Jenn V.

Yelp
If you are from nyc, this is a good bet for a bagel. Crusty outside, chewy inside, and still warm if you get there early enough. No tables to eat indoors. I am only giving four stars because of the pricing. I was aghast at what i spent on a bagel with tofu cream cheese. Would go there again, but not often due to prices.

Yelp
Yummy large New York style bagels. Was recommended to go there by a local. It's not the best bagel I've had, but pretty good! Maybe I got the wrong bagel as I went with the pizza bagel. It's a hole in the wall packed with to go bagels and other food you can buy. I felt like it was fairfly decent prices. They had quite a few people in there and because it was small, the service felt very rushed - but this is to be expected of such a small place.

Yelp
Solid bagel place! Employees are friendly and they have a large variety of flavors and spreads. Lox bagel was 14$ which is a lot for a bagel but most bagel places charge the same. Definitely one of the better bagel spots in the area! I really enjoyed. There is no seating so you will have to take your bagels to go. Would recommend trying this place next time you want a bagel!

Marc M.

Yelp
the quality of that place has gone down drastically. the challahs (still decent), flagship of this bakery seem to have been prepared the night prior or the recipe might have changed but it is not longer what it used to be. The lady at the register is nasty, unpleasant, a smile is free but she does not seem to know what customer service is. They won't even give you a receipt if you don't ask for it yet their register suggest a tip when they do absolutely nothing for the customer for what they charge, They should definitely improve what they do It has become a lame place when it was such an institution

Yelp
Great bagel, nice and fresh and good price Highly recommended to all my friends and family

Yelp
For years I have been telling people how wonderful this place is and sending everyone there. The bagels are excellent. Today however, the owner and the counter person could not have been more rude, less professional, bordering on hostile - to the point that I felt the need to write this review. Today I placed an online order and drove from Andover to Newton, expecting my order to be ready. I paid online and received an email confirmation. When I arrived the shop, the counter person told me the store was not accepting orders, there's no way I could have placed an order on the holiday, and to step aside. Just like that. I told her I would show her my confirmation. She said NEXT. Would not even make eye contact. i walked to the back to find someone else to speak with. I saw a man behind another counter at the back of the shop . Turns out the was the owner. I assumed this would be more easily resolved. I explained the situation and he told me no orders were placed or could be placed due to the holiday and that if I had placed one (If!) it would be refunded in a few days. How could it be refunded if it wasn't placed?' I explained that his counter person was extremely rude and he told me "No one me has been rude to you, come on" and walked away. Really? At that point I was digested. I walked out of the store and the counter person was standing outside. i told her that it's very easy to be helpful and kind and it costs absolutely nothing to do so. I looked up and the owner was right there. He looked at me and said "Come on lady, let's go." i have no words for being treated so horribly by a place that I have loved and promoted for years. They should be ashamed of themselves. Not only will I never return or recommend this place, my husband who grew up in Newton, was a customer for over 40 years. He will not return either.

Yelp
SO RUDE!! The bagels are amazing, don't get me wrong. But early in an empty store, the clerk, on the phone, ignored (silent) me, then punched in a $200 order in front of me. When I asked it that was a mistake, she SNAPS my head off! So: get the and hope she is working that day.

Pinkpeony L.

Yelp
The bagels are still excellent! Definitely give this place a try. However, no place is perfect. I tried the potato bagel and didn't care for it at all. I actually didn't finish it. I also tried the bialy. It was good, but I'm going back to my usual, the salt bagel, the next time I stop in. I can't recommend the small sweet roll I tried either. It was just too sweet for me; it might be perfect for you. There's a large rack of different kinds of coffee cake by the door. I'm going to get one of those next. (Update: it was excellent.) There's also a shelf with challah bread by the checkout. My sister made a French toast casserole recently and had trouble finding challah in Quincy. Now I know where she can get a loaf :) I figured out the parking lot. It's one-way, and you enter at the side of the building. If you're on Centre Street, driving northeast, get in the right turn lane as you approach Beacon Street. There's a large T sign at that corner. Take that right. The entrance to the lot is the next right after that. If you don't see an available space, continue on to the back of the building and go around the loop again. People are constantly coming and going.

Yelp
Our go-to place for bagels, delicious scallion cream cheese, plain cream cheese and strawberry cream cheese, also rolls (onion, plain, tea rolls) and challah. We also LOVE their delicious bagel, cream cheese, capers, onions and tomato and/or cucumber, lox sandwiches. ALSO, for International Firefighters Day, they donated bagels and cream cheese to our community's local firefighters. We are so lucky to have Rosenfeld in our community!!

Lauren H.

Yelp
We ordered bagels ahead of time here. It was really easy to do online. We did it first thing in the morning. The bagels were really crunchy and didn't taste fresh which was a bummer. The lox we ordered were good, but i don't think we would get bagels from here again. Very bummed

Iris W.

Yelp
ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel! bagel itself was wonderfully soft and fluffy with a crispy exterior! certainly unlike your classic nyc bagel (not super chewy), but a lovely texture nonetheless. there were also a ton of raisins in here which i LOVED! that being said though, the bagel felt a little plain? it lacked that distinctive molasses-y, subtly sweet flavor that makes a cinnamon raisin bagel a cinnamon raisin bagel. just felt like it was missing a little something! onto the cream cheese -- i tried the honey walnut cream cheese and the strawberry cream cheese! the walnuts in the hwcc tasted a bit questionable? but everything else was good! the strawberry cc also included real chunks of strawberry in it, which i thought was interesting. all in all, a pretty solid joint! not sure if i'd go out of my way for it, but it's definitely worth a try

Lilian C.

Yelp
Easily the worst bagel I've ever had. Super dry and tasted days old. Absolutely not worth the $7 each.

Maureen R.

Yelp
RUDE, RUDE, RUDE!! Hands down the worst customer service I have ever experienced! I tried to order 80 bagels online but I couldn't select the date for some reason, so I called. The MANAGER answered the phone and when I tried to place my order with her, she told me to go to the website. I explained the situation. She then asked, "Do you even know what you want? Do you have a credit card because you have to pay now!" I replied yes to both. She huffed and puffed and banged around. I asked, "Is there a problem?" She hung up the phone. I called back and she picked up the phone and hung up again, I called one more time and she hung up again. When I called from my landline, she picked up. Needless to say I will do my business at Barry's in Waban from now on. Rosenfeld's just isn't that good at bagels or customer service. https://www.barrysvillagedeli.com/

Yelp
Holy bagel prices here Batman.... 1.95 a single bagel. I ordered a chocolate chip bagel toasted with just butter... charged me $3.42...wow. Bagel was lousy too... overcooked, few chocolate chips and didn't even taste like chocolate chips? No melted chocolate? I don't see reason to return... over rated and expensive...

Roger W.

Yelp
How to decide? They have the best bagels I've found in the Boston area, but they aren't five star bagels. Way too big, not enough chew to the interior, but pretty darn tasty. Unless you get there before the rest of the area opens up parking is a nightmare. I needed a bank loan for my lox purchase, but unlike most bagel places they actually had real lox, not just the dreaded nova. It's my go-to bagel source, but I still can't quite manage that fifth star.

Adrian A.

Yelp
I used to go here every week or two for a delicious sandwich. Unfortunately, they have some new employees which are ruining the business. The young woman with glasses, who appears to be the manager, is one of the most unpleasant and rude people I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. The bagels here are amazing, but I will never be returning due to how poorly I was treated by that woman. From the moment I walked in, she treated me as a nuisance.

Steph J.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen bagels for pickup, but the story actually begins the day before. After reading everyone else's reviews about the rudeness of the workers, I think I need to share it because my experience was consistent with everyone else's here it seems. I called the day before, around the 11am hour to see if I could pick up a dozen bagels. I was trying to place an online order for a dozen but one second it was an option, and the next, the website was only showing 2 dozen bagels as an option. So I called, and the woman just yelled "we don't have any bagels" and then hung up on me. I thought, that's weird. Maybe they're having an off day. I noted that they don't close until 1pm....and wondered, what do they do if they're already out of bagels and have another 1-2 hours of being open? Part of me thought, maybe they're really good bagels. Anyway, yesterday morning first thing I placed my order and went in to pick up. I noticed it's quite busy and a small place. Definitely pickup and go. Several other people were going in and leaving with their big bags of bagels. It smelled amazing when I walked in. It's definitely bustling. I was able to walk right up and ask about my order, but the woman took a while to find it. In the middle of looking for my bag, another customer was trying to wrangle her bag of bagels from the shelf next to us, and the worker demanded "tranquila" of the customer. Overall, I got a pretty abrasive vibe from this woman (same as the day before on the phone, not sure if it was the same person). And the bagels? They are good. I tried it fresh, and while crispy on the exterior and very chewy as others describe it, I found it to be TOO chewy, and actually made my jaw tired. I tried another today and found it to be better, toasted. So yeah, they're decent and better than any grocery store bagel, but I'm having a moral dilemma of supporting a business that has horrible customer service. The price is nice at $15 for a dozen. So, if I really want a better bagel I MIGHT return, but I'm certainly not a guaranteed customer.

Nicole v.

Yelp
Bagels great every time I go. I think the service has been better, happier, friendlier as of late. I do not like the online ordering, but it's better than it was previously. It's usually very crowded, and there are consequences of that.

Jeffri E.

Yelp
Highly recommend by a few people. Took home the raisin bread. Enjoyed the mix of raisin varieties. Had coffee and a bagel and cream cheese on the bench outside. Fresh and good taste. A little sticker shock when I checked the receipt later - $4.65 for 1 bagel and cream cheese.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
The best bagels I have found in New England. They are the real deal. An oasis for all native New Yorkers.

Jon A.

Yelp
Great bagels! They were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. They have an olive cream cheese that was wonderful.

Lori Y.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from Uber eats, so this review is just for the bagel. I had an everything bagel with chive cream cheese, nova salmon, tomato, onions and capers. It was delicious! I'm always on the hunt for high quality bagels, and this is definitely up there on my list of favorites in the Boston area. It is a bit pricey. Tomatoes, onion, and capers were an additional $1 each on top of $12 for the nova salmon bagel!

Rick J.

Yelp
Buyer beware! Just a brief addendum to my original review: Rosenfeld's is now automatically, without notice to the customer, adding tips to online orders. They are also starting arguments with customers and making it seem like it is the customers' fault. They have even posted that they won't tolerate their customers' bad behavior. Well, we are living in upside-down times. Maybe this is just another example. A little customer appreciation goes a long way, as does appreciation BY the customer when service is good. Poor business practices prevent reviews like this one.

Annie L.

Yelp
Great bagels. As someone from New Jersey, these are the best bagels I've had in the Boston area, and they're the only ones I'll go back to have again. My only complaint is that they're too small compared to real NJ/NY bagels.

Steven K K.

Yelp
The best bagels, bialys & challah in New England. No place compares. The owner Michael is a master baker.

Mark P.

Yelp
Always expect a great bagel. Pumpernickel is my favorite there. Specially when it's still warm fresh out of the oven. The cream cheese is awesome! Only thing is the portion of the cream cheese container is never the same I asked one of the workers and they acknowledged they eye it. No big deal.

Helena H.

Yelp
Pricey but the bagels are delicious! Tried Everything, caramelized onion, pumpernickel and sesame. Lox spread is solid as is the light veggie cream cheese.

Bernhard M.

Yelp
Questionable food quality and shockingly bad customer 'service'. My spouse and I attempted to eat 2 bagels and chive cream cheese moments after we purchased them this morning (10/11/2023). After a couple of bites we both agreed the cream cheese tasted funny, and likely turning bad. I returned to Rosenfelds concerned about them selling possibly unsafe foodstuff. Instead of concern over customer health and safety, and appreciation that a customer would bring such to their attention, I got sour faced indignation, push-back, and all-round ugly attitude from the person who took lead on my inquiries. I was unsettled by such an attitude. When I suggested the two spoilt bagels be replaced, the indignation was turned up a few notches. [N.B. I should have asked for our money back for the cream cheese. The replacement tub too seems to be on edge of turning bad.] Note too there is NO "Safe until...", "Use by..." or "Date Packed ..." information on the containers we had. That would have been very helpful to gauge product freshness and safety. Later, driving home to South Boston, I learned of the apparent mandatory "Tip" that my wife's debit card transaction accrued at check out. What a cheek !! And how sad. We have loved coming here for decades. Here's a 'Tip' for nothing: Beware the Wednesday morning Chive Cream Cheese at Rosenfeld's You may get more than you bargained for.

T G.

Yelp
As a long-time customer of Rosenfelds, it pains me to write this, BUT in the past couple of years, the service and quality have suffered. The challahs are generally still good but not as fresh tasting as they used to be. The biggest problem is the service or lack thereof, provided by the people who work there ... it's like the customers are almost invisible. There are other great options for kosher challahs and bagels, and bubkahs in the area. I am losing my patience with the way I have been treated at Rosenfelds and may have to take my steady business elsewhere.

Matt C.

Yelp
The best bagels in the Boston area, hands down. The bagels are fresh, hot and have the iconic crunchy exterior. They really are NY style bagels. 10/10.

Lia A.

Yelp
They cancelled my order and didnt give me my 20 bucks back?? and then hung up the phone on me when I was trying to explain the issue.

Dean C.

Yelp
Not much to say here other than no frills and incredible bagels and challah. Great place!

Lori T.

Yelp
Great bagels. Service helpful. Neighborhood gem. Perfect for Father's Day pickup of goodies.

Mike B.

Yelp
Too legit. This is the best NY-style bagel place in greater Boston, hands down. Can't say I disagree with the comments about the staff, but come on the place is teeny tiny and wildly popular. You can't take your sweet time here, they want you in and out ASAP and I don't blame them. They sell out of many items every day, so you know what you're getting is fresh. Get there early, know what you want beforehand and your experience will be awesome, I promise. If you're moving slower than the retirees of Newton, you'll justifiably receive some lip.

Virginia M.

Yelp
The most fabulous, fresh, delicious bagels anywhere! They were all warm and they have such a wonderful staff!

Frankie M.

Yelp
The woman/ manager at the desk was extremely rude and abrupt while informing me (last minute) that my online order had been canceled. I received no notification from the business about the cancellation. Not sure if they hired new people or not but the service used to be much better.

Peter O.

Yelp
Best bagels ever had, they toast up so nice and crispy where no other bagels toasts crispy on the outside. Make the ride to Newton for a fresh dozen every few weels!

Masha S.

Yelp
New York style bagels with New York quality. If you are in the Newton area this is a place you must go to. I felt like I was transported to NYC when I entered the place and the bagel display was awesome! To watch a more in-depth review of their everything bagels watch the video below https://youtu.be/IhqgNCLJyM0

Libby S.

Yelp
Pretty meh for a $6 bagel. They have been better in the past- but the bagel I picked most recently was not worth the price they are charging.

James R.

Yelp
Overrated and forgot an item in our order both times we got takeout here. Bagels are average. Will be looking for another bagel spot

Milan W.

Yelp
We bought hamantaschen from several local bakeries including Rosenfeld Bagel and sampled them all. Rosenfeld is the clear winner! The pastry and jam filling have the perfect amount of sweetness (subtle and not too sweet - a tricky balance to achieve), texture and taste. Absolutely scrumptious!

Allegra S.

Yelp
Excellent. The real deal. Got salt bagels and cream cheese. Worth traveling for! It's a little difficult to find, in a basement.

Ari P.

Yelp
This is easily the best bagel in Massachusetts. Rosenfeld's knows what they're doing. It's not even necessary for me to explain why; just go eat one bagel there, it will change your whole life. Love this place, will always be coming back for more!

Robert D.

Yelp
I had a "Cape Cod" bagel yesterday (in Cape Cod). Pardon me for vomiting, but those goyim don't know from a bagel. While we are at it, don't bother with Coolidge Corner bagels any more. They lost their Hebrew a long time ago. Proper bagels are chewy on the inside and crusty on the outside. The half-life is 30 minutes, so the bakery has to make them all day and you have to be able to get there before they go stale. Rosenfeld's gets it right, and it's well worth the long and dangerous drive from Brookline. Get an extra one for the drive home.

Kim D.

Yelp
Hubbie says last night around midnight.... you know what would be delicious a chewy bagel, with fresh cream cheese and capers. Want to guess what I dreamt about... DoorDashed ourselves some bagels in the am. 1-plain with plain and capers (he's still sleeping will update later 1-onion with veg cream cheese (I wrote it a little poem) You are a delicious chewy treat, That my teeth find hard to eat. You cream cheese is smooth, With the perfect amount of ooze, Now I must post on Yelp eats. Ending is kind of rough. All in. Great chewy bagel. They cost both sides with the crunchy onion bits which is my litmus test of a good bagel. I was hungrier than I thought and kind of inhaled it. The bit about hard to eat. You can judge me all you want. But I like my bagel cut in half like they do at Bruegger's. It makes it easier to eat like a sandwich. I had to disassemble mine. I maybe could have asked to have it sliced. Also wore my retainers last night (for the first time in months-2021 resolution). Anyone with braces, you know. With post retainer teeth this was a hard meal to tackle. Four stars is partially my fault. Will update.

Leah R.

Yelp
Horrible staff. Truly horrible. The owner should fire every employee in there. Bought two bagels a self serve coffee, and asked for milk or cream for my coffee. They "didn't have any". Ok, we'll take away the self serve coffee then. Also, the place is dirty. Will never go back.

Lilian L.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday afternoon. There was no wait and 7 types of bagels left. Got a garlic bagel with chive cream cheese and lox, and a sunflower bagel with sundried tomato & dill cream cheese and lox. Bagels were toasted and had a crispy outside and chewy inside. Both sandwiches tasted great, but needed more cream cheese/lox. At $7 each they are reasonably priced, but I would rather pay more for a perfect ratio of cream cheese/lox/bagel. Next time I'll ask for extra and see if they're willing to customize.

Chris S.

Yelp
I have never, in my entire life, seen such rude and lazy employees as I've seen here. I've read the other reviews and thought maybe they were overreacting and a little sensitive but what I witnessed during my visit shocked me. I wouldn't even put up with this if the bagels were good, but they're average at best. I will never return to this place and will be warning friends and family about this customer abuse factory they call a bagel shop.

David K.

Yelp
Their challah and bagels are good, but the staff is just AWFUL! (2 stars instead of 1 is because their their products are good.) Years ago, they had nice and efficient people interacting with customers, but 5 or more years ago the staff changed and the new people have been awful and haven't improved over time. I continued to go there for challahs figuring that my interaction with the staff was minimal. But I just had an incident with them today and I have finally hit my limit. I'm done with them.
